Like a Local
By Peter Greenberg
When you come to the BEA in June, I hope youll join my
panel discussion on The Evolution & Revolution of Travel
Guides: An Insiders Look at Experiential, Immersive Travel
and Pushing the Publishing Envelope. As a contrarian traveler, I hope you also take
time to get out of the convention center and explore some of the best that New York
has to offer. Here are a few spots not far from the Javits Center.
Art & Culture
Just off the High Line [see p. 38} youll discover the thriving Chelsea gallery scene.
The Gagosian Gallery (555 W. 24th St., between 10th and 11th Aves.) always draws
big names and offers the traditional New York art-lover experience. During June, a
survey of the great Italian painter and sculptor Lucio Fontana will be on display. For a
somewhat more cutting-edge exhibition, check out Jonathan Levine Gallery (529 W.
20th St., between 10th and 11th Aves.), which showcases the works of underground
and emerging artists. Just a little farther south but still in Chelsea, youll find the
Rubin Museum of Art (150 W. 17th St., between Sixth and Seventh Aves.). Brush up
on your Buddhism and learn about Tibetan and Himalayan art at this small collection.
Want to see where nonfiction books are born? Take a night off and head to an event
hosted by the Moth (www.themoth.org), where you can listen to storytelling events
throughout the city each week. Some of the biggest talent get their start in New York,
and the 99-seat Ars Nova theater (511 W. 54th St., between 10th and 11th Aves.)
is one of the best places to see emerging and alternative performers, playwrights, and
comedians in an unpretentious, black-box setting. You also never know what A-lister
might be there that night, as the Moth has attracted performances from everyone from
Liza Minnelli to Daily Show writers.
Most people will point you to Greenwich Village institutions like the Blue Note
or the Village Vanguard for jazz, but there are plenty of alternate venues that are well
worth a visit. Birdland (315 W. 44th St., between Eighth and Ninth Aves.) is an obvi-
ous choice, but theres also the classic Bar on Fifth at the Setai Fifth Avenue Hotel
(400 Fifth Ave., at 36th St.), and a little farther south, Jazz Standard (116 E. 27th St.,
between Park and Lexington Aves.), located in the basement of Danny Meyers Blue
Smoke barbecue joint, and often offers an early (8 p.m.) first set.
Local Refreshment
You may need a little sustenance during these tours. Get a slice of real New York pizza
at Artichoke Basille (114 10th Ave., between 17th and 18th Sts.), one of the most
interesting new pizza joints in the city. Or head to Tia Pol (205 10th Ave., between
22nd and 23rd Sts.) for a quick tapas lunch or even an afternoon breaknothing will
