FROM THE PASTORS DESK Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! This weekends Gospel message from John 10 addresses the subject of leadership. Jesus tells us quite clearly and unequivocally that He is the Good Shepherd. For us as Christians, all leadership, then, must measure up against the platinum standard that Jesus sets for us: wisdom, fairness, compassion, commitment, and genuine accountability. And guess what? All human leadershipall human leadership inevitably falls short of the mark. People invariably let us down. Rather than become discouraged, disillusioned, and cynical, though, we are called to return ever and always to Christ as our model and inspiration. In surrendering to that fundamental truth, we are able to keep a sense of perspective about what and who is really important in our lives. This weekend, I will be leaving to assume responsibilities as pastor at Old Mission Santa Barbara, starting August 1. In the meantime, I will be taking a few months for sabbatical time, including a study pilgrimage to Assisi this summer. While I am looking forward to my new assignment, I am also quite sad to leave Mission San Luis Rey. The French have a great saying: A partir cest a morir un peu, which means To leave is to die a little. But as one parishioner put things rather frankly : Father Chuck, youre leaving already? We were just beginning to like you! Seriously, though, leaving is a kind of little death for me. I will miss you all and cannot thank you enough for your tremendous goodness and generosity to me and to all of us Franciscan friars who come streaming in and out of your lives. I believe that the Parish and Mission will be left in the hands of tremendously capable leaders. In a formal way, the friars will be responsible for the spiritual care of the parish and Mission. In this light, I believe we are really blessed. We have the administrative skill and savvy of Father David. Father Adrian, as you know, is a gifted homilist and liturgist, as well as a deep listener. Father Luis, in addition to his gifts of preaching and administration, has worked successfully to draw people into

new and revitalized expressions of popular devotion: the Via Crucis, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the celebration of our patron saint, King Louis of France, and so on. Fr. Andres offers his gentle and compassionate earthinessalways with a great twist of humor. Frs. Michael and Larry continue to feed and inspire through their scholarship and deep reflection. And our newest friar, Brother Chris is blossoming as retreat center director with his gifts of teaching and hospitality. But the friars, of course, represent only one aspect of leadership in the Parish and Mission. Our parish family is bursting with gifted leaders in terms of our dedicated and capable Parish Staff, our wonderful parish schoolOld Mission Montessori, and through the abundance of riches in our more than 60 parish ministries. And we are a community of communities as well, benefitting from the richness of so many groups who contribute both to the diversity and unity of our parish/ Mission family, including the English-speaking communities, Hispanics, Filipinos, Samoans, Guamanians, military families, youth, retirees, snow birds. well, just everyone. It will be the job of the friars to continue to identify, encourage, and animate lay leadership led by the Spirit. In the coming years, it will be the challenge and task of all parish leaders to continue to pray for and dedicate themselves to being and becoming more authentically the welcoming Presence of Jesus Christ in the North County. We are called to this one mission at the Mission. For my part, I am so happy and proud to have been able to play my part in this process. Thank you for your welcome, your friendship, your support, and your forgiving patience with my shortcomings and limitations. You are in my heart and prayers. Always. God bless, Fr. Chuck PS: Finally, in a separate matter, I am pleased to announce that the Parish has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Diocese to purchase a parcel of three acres of land immediately adjacent to us. This purchase will secure present uses and provide us with an invaluable buffer zone with any future neighbors. Kudos to Allen Hartman, our former Business Manager for his great work!

We invite you to serve We are the Hands of Christ!

The freshness of Spring and the new life of Easter aid us in renewing our commitment to a Christ-centered way of life. As we reflect on how we have used our God-given gifts of time and talents, as well as our gifts of material possessions during this past year, we become aware of how we have shared those gifts. As we reflect, we may ask ourselves: Have I shared my gift of time wisely among my family, friends, work, prayer and weekly Eucharist? Am I willing to take-a-step, reprioritize and plan to share a little more time in those areas which I consider important? Do I acknowledge and give thanks that all around me is gift from our most generous God? Am I able to take-astep and acknowledge that I, too, am a gift from God? Have I begun the journey of discerning what special gifts and talents God has given me? Am I willing to take-astep in this most vital process toward our parish Welcome Sunday when Ill be asked to share my gifts? Before we can begin using and sharing our God-given gifts and talents, we must first discover what we have been given! Then, when we live a stewardship way of life, out of gratitude to God for all that we have been given, our work becomes holy. By accepting Jesus mission as our own at Baptism and depending on the Eucharist to nourish and sustain us for this challenge we become ever more aware that at home, at work, at the parish, in the community and in the world We are the Hands of Christ! Sunday, May 20th is Welcome Sunday in our parish. On May 20th, we'll be welcoming all new Parishioners and inviting everyone -- both new parishioners and old -- to join any of our incredible ministries at the Parish and Old Mission. Please join us in the Serra Gardens after any Mass on Sunday, May 20th to talk with Ministry representatives to learn more. We look forward to seeing all of you and talking more with you on May 20th. See you all there!

Querida Familia Parroquial,

All nos vemos! 1 Juan 3:1
