BASF to launch 7 products in crop protection segment

BASF India will launch seven products in the crop protection segment over the next three years. Mr Prasad Chandran, Chairman and Managing Director, said the focus was to invest in new product development to complement and sustain a strong position in soyabean, fruit and vegetable markets through new herbicides and fungicides. We will gain entry into cereal and corn markets through herbicides, he said. The products being launched are a result of the experience gained over the years and working closely with farmers through the recently launched Samruddhi project targeted at educating them on the right and timely use of chemicals, Mr Chandran added.

Implemented in the soyabean growing belts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, the Samruddhi projects educate farmers on preparing the field, seed treatment, spacing between crops and application of chemicals. BASF has spent Rs 20 crore in the one-year soyabean crop season which started last October and covering 103,000 farmers. The company plans to increase this number to 300,000 covering 20 lakh hectares in 2011. Products for other crops We are impressed with the response to Samruddhi from farmers cultivating soyabean and want to cover other crops such as groundnut, guar, apple, potato and chilli. BASF has also received a good feedback from Sri Lanka for Samruddhi which was launched last year, Mr Chandran said. Due to low efficiency in spraying herbicides caused by wrong use of nozzles, the BASF crop protection team launched herbicide spray nozzles in 2010. Besides developing a business model for sale of spray equipment through BASF channels, Samruddhi aims to enhance farmer benefits through efficient use of spray equipment and crop protection products. India is the world's ninth-largest crop protection market which, between 2003 and 08, grew to Rs 4,140 crore from Rs 2,104 crore. The crop protection business of BASF India includes plant growth regulators including chlormequat chloride. In the last six years, it has grown to Rs 512 crore from Rs 174 crore and, last year, contributed to around 35 per cent of the company's revenue. Calendar 2009 was challenging for Indian agriculture when delayed and scarce rains caused food grain production to fall by 7.2 per cent to 217 million tonnes. Despite this difficult environment, the BASF crop protection division continued to grow thanks to new products and marketing initiatives, said Mr Chandran. Productivity up Soyabean, one of the main edible oils in India, is cultivated over 9.6 million hectares. By adopting BASF farming techniques, farmers growing soyabean have managed to reduce input costs and increased productivity by 40 per cent, he said. The research and development sites in Mumbai and Mangalore have special competencies in organic synthesis chemistry, focusing on material and life-science molecules and intermediates for industrial applications. They are part of BASF's Verbund philosophy. BASF's integrated approach to manufacturing, research and management, along with the integration of infrastructure, processes, energy and waste management, is known as Verbund, a German term meaning linked' or integrated'. In early 2008, the company established a research lab in Thane near Mumbai which specialises in organic compound synthesis research.
