Ryan Adams and David Rawlings (longtime musical partner of Gillian and other worldly conWelch) co-vwotethis homage to youth, sadness, cems. The two artists have both recorded versionsof the tune; Adams's recording (on which this presentation is based) appears on his 2000 while Rawlings's versionappearson his 2009 album releaseHeartbreaker, A Friend of a Friend.Although Rawlings'srendition is mostly similar in a form, it is transposedto the key of A and showcases somewhat more acousticinstrumentation (including fiddle, upright bass,and banjo). In Adams's recording, an electric guitar hits a Bbnote on the and of beat rwo during the third and seventh measuresof each verse,

which we've arranged for one guitar, below. Immediately afterward, the progressionanticipates a return to the G chord on the and of beat fgur. The final line of the chorus features a D chord that lasts for four measureswhile a bass line descends from D to C, B, and A. In the first chorus, this happens one time before repeating the song's intro (as Adams kicks off with an emphatic "Oh man!"). In the secondchorus, the D-chord line repeats for four addi tional bars and then movesto Gmaj7, marking the beginning of the song's bridge section. Although not transcribed,the move reappears for eight measuresin the last two lines of the _DAN APCZYNSKI bridge.
