FOREWORD
Dear friends, I write this foreword to the National Youth Assemblys Performance report with pleasure, humility and a profound sense of satisfaction. This book contains highlights of activities, achievements and progress from August 2010 April 2012. This span was a defining one for us in many ways. For one, we were faced with the challenge of establishing a new organization as well as reaching out to youth with programs that aid their own personal growth as well as Pakistan's development. We started our journey with limited resources and team but, with firm commitment and vision, we have successfully carried out some extraordinary activities and projects. To ensure effective implementation, the organization needed to set measurable targets for the commitments. We are successful to unite youth of the country from different educational backgrounds or systems; elite education system, government education system, etc. Through this approach we aspired to create united Pakistan. One and half year has flown by and highlights from the past months; an unforgettable experience for us, include many of achievements. We could not have come this far without our unyielding commitment, the dedicated work of our members as they continue to demonstrate the impact of youth engagement in communities across the country. We are now operating in more than 115 districts of the country, and we have developed grassroots leaders from these districts. Now, the family of the National Youth Assembly devoted its life to revitalizing and meeting the challenges to make the country prosperous. By bringing leaders together in a creative and sharing spirit to see life through the eyes and experiences of others, we created opportunities to learn about and engage with the significant ideas, challenges and trends shaping the future while exploring and reflecting on their own roles and responsibilities as leaders. The National Youth Assembly has also presented many welfare concepts so far. The National Youth Assemblys Iftar project is one of our substantive projects apropos to feed forty thousand impoverished people of more than twenty districts of the country. We do not claim to have achieved big milestones but, at the same time, they cant be ignored as insignificant with respect to the resources needed to support ambitious projects. In contrary to the prevailing political culture in which youth has always been exploiting for the vested interest, we train our members, provide opportunities to explore, and introduce them, from NYA forum, in a very respectable manner.
This book explores the potential of youth as agents of change. It reflects the findings of a research process which studies youth-led action as a strategy for strengthening young peoples ability to develop themselves, their communities and contribute to society at large. I must take this opportunity to thank all legislators who pushed our concepts in real parliament, and heartfelt gratitude to all those who have encouraged us. Looking forward, in 2013 we hope to reach out to more bright and promising young people and help them find the confidence to lead social change by expanding our programs, launching new initiatives and incorporating the lessons that we have learned in last into future endeavors. I the pages that follow, I invite you to learn about the social issues we are addressing, approaches we are talking, results we are delivering, and ultimately the leaders we are developing. I hope you will be inspired to join us in our journey to change the quality of future leadership in Pakistan. Sincerely,

BACKGROUND
Young people constitute the largest 63% resides between the age 15-35 segment of Pakistani population. However, Youth Literacy Rate conforming to the wider pattern in Pakistan is even lower at 42 %. Poverty excludes many young people from civic participation. They have no access to decision-making forums, nor acknowledged as partners in the decision making process. The youth of the country, as a whole, limited access to state matters; they are used and manipulated by different groups. The fact is that their talent is not properly utilized, channelized and appreciated, that is why the talent is exploited abroad. On the other way the small segment of talented youth prefer to stay here but still they are not that much fruitful because they generally are not utilized and directed. The traditional culture does not encourage young people to take decisions on issues concerning them. At governmental level, first time in the history of Pakistan, on June 12, 1989, Youth Affairs Division was established, which was merged with Ministry of Women Development on October 09, 1993. It was again made a separate Division on August 18, 1996 and was again merged with Ministry of Culture on November 19, 1996 as a Wing. It became full-fledged Ministry on 18-11-2005, but the irony of matter is that on March 31st, 2011, the Ministry of Youth Affairs was dissolved and delegated its powers to the provincial governments. On the top of it, the fund earmarked for youth is one rupee per person, which reflects the interest of decision makers about the future of Pakistan. Now, at federal level the dissolution of Ministry according to international conventions and agreements, the rights of young people in Pakistan has not moved from paper to practice. The period of the life under which the youth fall, is the most productive and energetic. But a failure to fully support our present "asset" as well as next generation of leaders can result grievously. We take utmost care to fortify the foundations while
building houses but, as a nation we are bizarre, who did not pay any heed to the foundation stones of the leadership stature of the country. When the flag of democracy was hoisted in elections, the youth was thwarted by saying; the blinds cannot lead the blinds, etc. If ever the youth has taken part in the politics, their interest has been circumscribed to the affixing of posters, raising slogans, torching vehicles/public property, and other pertinent arrangements during political rallies. The young segment feel this to be disrespectful for them, at that extend, to go to the polling stations and cast votes but, when it comes to any unrest situation in the country, the rebellions of the system take to the streets with clubs and baton in their hands. Like a blind elephant who trample his own army. Today, the spectacular of countys worsening situation - who are the real architect of future has this question in their mind, have we dreamt for this liberty? Have we created a new country for building structural infrastructure, then destroying with our own hands, and rebuilding them? It is unfortunate that a segment of youth, despite their contributions to national developments, find themselves trapped in a culture marked by guns, violence and drugs. All this has resulted in an unstable economy, a shattered confidence of foreign investors, lawlessness, and a break-up of the social fabric. This is the best time for Pakistan to invest in youth and reactivate and relocate their disfranchised energies if there is any need for economic growth and social development in Pakistan. If we glance through the history of the world, it stands clear that the countries with the fastest economic growth over the past 50 years are those which heavily invested in their youth. In this connection, National Youth Assembly is playing its role to engage youth of the country in productive activities. The NYA promotes the role of youth in areas such as: human rights, social welfare, community development, leadership training, environmental protection, cultural and religious tolerance. It provides opportunities for youth representatives from different part and parcel of the country to exchange ideas and experiences, to coordinate program plans, and to reach a better understanding of each others problems. Since its formation, the NYA has increased its membership to the present 500 full members, from different districts of the country. The youth of Pakistan, despite a multitude of problems like unemployment, unbalanced education system, poverty, remorselessness, social taboos, drugs, guns and politics, have always been in the forefront of movements and political changes. The youth is like running water. It makes its own ways. The frustration as a result of multitude of problems is increasing day by day. This is the right time to look into the problems of youth and give them viable solutions otherwise it will be too late in the day. We need to bear in mind that the destiny of nations is in the hands of youth. Unemployment is another problem being faced by our youths. Almost 12 percent (Labor Force Survey, Government of Pakistan, 1997) of our youth is unemployed. Unemployment is a multi-dimensional and complex issue which starts a vicious cycle of associated problems like involvement of youth in politics, bank-household burglaries, social insecurity, lawlessness, use of drugs, etc. Though every government has done something for the youth with regards to eradication of unemployment but the problem is sustainability of these programmes. One government launches a couple of youth promotion and youth investment schemes, the next one slates all the previous programmes and starts anew. The ultimate sufferers in this exercise are the youth.
As to radio, electronic and print media dont target youth as one of their potential audiences. With the start of public-private partnership, the government should pay extra attention to using them in education, welfare and development of the youth. No doubt the youth of Pakistan is dedicated, enthusiastic with their country and humanity but emotions are not enough they need a direction to create a positive Pakistan, youth can attain this direction through constant thinking, discussions, innovations and reasoning. For the real destiny of Pakistan and to bring positive approach, the youth must learn the neglected lessons of truth, justice, bravery and governance. In this ambitious dream to be realized, the National Youth Assembly will play its gigantic and responsible role.

In the preceding day, the launching ceremony of Pak China Friendship magazine; YOULIN-GOOD NEIGBORS, the president NYA presented his book to the head of Chinese delegation. Children Peace Award said, Im really impressed by the whole idea and existence of the National Youth Assembly. Its bringing a lot of different groups of people together. At first, before joining the National Youth Assembly, I had quite a vague idea what NYA was and what young people could do in an organization then at that period it was more about exploring. Motivational speeches by Change in Education CEO & Founder Faisal Mushtaq and international bronze medalist in snooker Shiram Chingezi gave insight into their success by urging people to do something instead of talking about change. Dont just complain, Mushtaq urged. The organizer of this conference and Federal Secretary of National Youth Assembly, Ammar Shahzad, while addressing the audience, said that the training session would help you transform, or change some area of your life. Concluding the event, an interactive session on leadership qualities and motivation was held by Nazia Ramzan, a well-known trainer from Karachi. In this session, Rauf Khalid said that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving common goals efficiently and effectively. He put it in simpler terms; that the leader is one who builds inspiration among his/her followers, and he/she acts as a director of the action. He or she is the person in the group that possesses the combination of personality and skills that makes others want to follow his or her direction. Mr. Akbar Jan Marwat discussed leadership and speaking skills as: a good leader is one who makes a lasting impression on people and motivates scattered people at one point. A leader is someone who has followers. He noted out that great fear that many people have, is speaking before a group or audience. The primary reason is that they are afraid of looking foolish in front of other people. The way to overcome this fear is through preparation, a safety net, and a positive attitude toward the audience. He said, Public speaking is the process of speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners. It is closely allied to presenting, although the latter has more of a commercial connotation. The Table Topics portion of a meeting took place before or after the formal prepared speeches segment and usually lasts 2 or 2.50 minutes. The Trainers announced a topic and called on several members, one at a time, who gives impromptu one- to-twominute responses to that topic. They talked about table talk all the participants went one by one and discussed one question that would be asking at this context seven people become qualified and District member YSP, Bushra Nazir, won this session and District member Naveed Ahmad was a runner up. During this segment an interesting situation created by Mr. Rauf Khalid and Akbar Jan Marwat gave comment one by one to all the participants and tells them about their Skills for battement in public speaking. /The lecture embraces the following guideposts:
Step to over come that fear Be well-prepared before addressing to a group Practice your speech Have a backup, in case you forget what you want to say Reduce the fear of your audience Relax yourself just before you speak. Rauf Khalid says Dont wait for an opportunity to start what your mind has already started. Just make it happen!

CAMPAIGNS
Fourteen Points of NYA on National Issues
The National Youth Assembly has identified some socio-political problems faced by us with viable solutions to address these problems. After having thorough research and brainstorming, we draw a fourteen-point as remedies to overcome these issues. These fourteen points are the reflection of the founder of Pakistan; Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
PROBLEMS POOR POLITICAL DISPENSATION Our country is a victim of plethora of maladies, like poor political dispensation, feeble institutions, and historically, the system of governance democracy has been unable to take root in the country.
SOLUTIONS
We need to take drastic initiative to remove mess created by current political dispensation through awakening the youth, and creating awareness about real democratic values. A well-defined strategy should be devised after discussing every avenue for strong and harmonized institutionalization. Like China, there should be a leadership institute for the preparing the nurseries for future decision makers.
EDUCATION There is a double standard education in the country divided between rural and urban, and poor and rich. The syllabus is also said to be unsuccessful in attaining the real spirit of humanity and patriotism There should be a uniform education for all students of the country at every level, and at least 5% of the annual budget should be earmarked for education. In order to achieve Universal Primary Education (UPE), the government should take steps on emergency basis. The syllabus should be designed in job oriented manner, and technical education should be included in syllabus. Like National Internship Program, there should be a National Outreach Program aim at providing jobs to 0.1 Million graduates near to their residence.
BALOCHISTAN ISSUE Balochistan has an unfortunate history of denial of rights and repression against those who demand them. It is doubly unfortunate because it has been largely ignored by the political forces as well as the media, barring untoward incidents such as the murder of Nawab Akbar Bugti. The recent Balochistan package has failed to address the real issues of Balochistan. All the Baloch political parties must be taken into confidence, military operation must be ceased, create new jobs for the youth of Balochistan, foreign intervention should be stopped, and remove the sense of deprivation of the people of that province.
TERRORISM Today, the country is facing numerous forms of law and order issues. Terrorist attacks, thefts, killings, harassment, etc. are the order of the day, and people feel insecure because of this dilapidating situation of the country. All these ills are the by-products of delayed justice system and lack of unity among exploiters. We should be aware of our rights, and forcefully demand from the government to ensure law and order situation in the country. The government should devise its foreign policy in line with national security, and it should be in accordance with public referendum or opinion. Besides, the law enforcing agency should be depoliticized.
JUDICIARY
The report of THE NEWS is, no doubt, a showcase of his long-drawn-out struggled:
[The News Monday, January 09, 2012 Report: Farzana Ali Khan] Peshawar: Hanan Ali Abbasi, the president of NYA announced a new campus of the University of the Punjab for Murree after the government of the Punjab approved a model concept of the youth leader. This announcement was made after two years of rigorous effort of youth-led movement under the leadership of Hanan Ali Abbasi. Interestingly, having a background of village, Abbasi was nominated the best youth parliamentarian of session 2009-10 and in October 2009 he introduced the concept of Kohsar University and launched an effective public awareness campaign for the establishment of this university. In an interview with The News he said, Through this campaign, he captivated the attention of the legislators through TV talk shows, public gatherings etc. and affirmed that On the border of district Abbottabad, district Bagh and Tehsil Murree KOHSAR UNIVERSITY can be the symbol of educational friendship and harmony among Kashmir, Punjab & KP province, adding it will be the message of bright future for those students who could not complete their higher education, just because of poverty and unavailability of university. Hanan said that for this purpose, he had designed a feasibility including from land to construction, technicalities, statistical information, composed all the details in the shape of a book and presented this book to concerned authorities including Chairman, Higher Education Commission; chief minister Punjab and others. Finally, the chief minister approved the concept of the university and announced immediate establishment of the University of Punjab campus for the deprived people of Khittae-Kohsar.
suggestion of YSP, like; Plantation of 152 trees in the surrounding of monument in the memories of 152 martyrs. The CDA highly appreciated the whole plan of YSP, and included maximum of its proposal points to its final construction plan. Finally, on 28th July, the CDA constructed 75% of monument and opened it for the public. It is also worth-mentioning that instead of, government assurance, when the monument was not built, the President National Youth Assembly, Hanan Ali Abbasi, raised a strong voice at different effective forums, and in connection with this, he wrote an open letter to the Interior Minister published in daily The News. In an open letter written to Interior Ministry, the Youth Senate Pakistan (YSP) has urged the government to fulfill its promise of building monument at the Margalla Hills in the memory of unfortunate Airblue plane crash. The letter says that as July 28 approaches with its harsh memories, the visitors of Margalla Hills still keep beckoning different site of the accident, as they dont know the exact spot. The letter contained that its the best way to remember the services of 152 martyrs of plane crash. Addressing the interior minister, the letter says that Airblue Plane crash was an unprecedented accident in the history of Pakistan as it had claimed six future, devoted leaders of Youth Parliament and 146 other valuable lives. In our opinion, if the memories and services of all the victims of the Margalla Hills could be gathered, a monument higher than all the pyramids would rise, it points out.
trees, and highly acclaimed the eco-conscious gesture of the members of the National Youth Assembly. They hoped these types of activities would bring green revolution in the city yet stimulate the youth to conserve the earth from calamity of recent climatic changes Thirty-seven position-holder students of Divisional Public School, at this ceremony, planted trees with their names. The students were motivated and vowed to take constant part in these types of activities. The members of NYA, Ayesha Chaudhary, Faisal Dost Ali and Shahid Mahmood took keen interest to organize this ceremony. The members of NYA said today, they were sending a message to the students of DPS that they would spare no effort to make Faisalabad green and pollution-free. They would also try to involve the whole society to beautify the city.
Ministry in November 2005, but the irony of matter is that in March 2011, the Ministry of Youth Affairs was dissolved and delegated its powers to the provincial governments. Hanan lamented that though the devolution of power was appreciable but, at federal level, dissolution of ministry has created a yawning gap between Pakistani youth and the rest of the world. With the closure of this ministry, all key agreements with international governmental and non-governmental bodies have also been abolished. Programs run under the ministry at federal level, like National Internship Program (NIP), National Outreach Program, et al direly affected, and the continuation of these programs can only be maintained by National Youth Commission at federal level. Hanan Ali Abbasi informed that unfortunately, in the name of saving money, the ministry of youth affairs had been dissolved whereas, the fund earmarked for youth is one rupee per person which was 5 times less than its annual budget driven in by international accords. Now, at federal level the dissolution of Ministry according to international conventions and agreements, the rights of young people in Pakistan has not moved from paper to practice. Young people constitute the largest 63% resides between the age 15-35 segment of Pakistani population. The fact is that their talent is not properly utilized, channelized and appreciated, that is why the talent is exploited abroad. It is the need of the hour that federal government should re-establish ministry of youth affairs in the shape of National Youth Commission.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL
How to become a great leader? Strong Beliefs
One thing that all great leaders have in common is strong beliefs. Once you understand your beliefs, you can next look at your group to determine if those beliefs are being promoted. To be a great leader, you don't want to waste time worrying about things that are not directly connected to your beliefs.
say a leader must be tall or speak well. In reality, these factors are insignificant when it comes to being a strong leader. The most important aspect of being a great leader is having strong principles.
Patience
Any organization that you are with should support your principles. If it does not, you will fail as a leader. You should provide all the necessary assistance to those under you to make sure they can succeed. They should be given all the tools they need. This is information you will want to go over on a daily basis. Doing it, will allow you to see, how you are performing as a leader. You will want to make changes to any areas that need improvements. When you make changes, you will want to make sure they are done gradually, as your group needs to become familiar with them. This will require you to be patient, and patience is an important trait for a good leader.
Communication
Spend time talking with your followers to find out what they need. Communication is important, and a good leader will also want to be a good listener. Your followers may have great ideas that you may not have considered. At the same time, you will want to give your followers just enough to make them happy, but not so much that they become completely independent. While charisma is something that you may or may not have, being a great leader is something that can be learned, but it will take effort on your part.
management. Many people make the mistake of confusing the two. There are some key differences between the two concepts. When someone talks about management, they are referring to those that are responsible for giving directions to employees or workers. A manager may be responsible for designing a number of systems which allow employees to work efficiently. They are also responsible for handling any problems that may arise among those they manage. The goal of a manager is to get employees to work in a manner that is highly proficient. While a manager may have some of the traits seen in leaders, they are not the true definition of one. A great leader is rare. They tend to have a specific combination of abilities that are difficult to learn. Many of the things that compose a great leader appear to be natural. Many people have personalities that allow them to easily move into leadership positions, while other people may not display leadership abilities until they are placed in a difficult situation. In this situation, people that appear to be normal could demonstrate a brilliant capability to lead. Other people choose to lead. They understand what it takes to be a good leader, and choose to take on this role.

decision. It was the correct thing to do at the time. At present concentrate on what is correct at the present time. Mentally practice the execution of your option and reproduce in your mind's eye what upshot will result. Discussing different solutions with your employees or others will add new thoughts and commitment. Stop protracted thoughts about your decision. Make it and take it through. Believe your skill to make a thriving decision and your capability to pursue it. Never make more decision all at once, take time and make decision perfectly.
Crafting a Lede
A lede, which is a journalism slang term for the first sentence or two of a story is an incredibly important part of the process. You need to hook readers with your lede and, in some cases (as discussed above), relay the important parts of your story. You need to draw a reader in while telling him why the story matters. Like all forms of writing, theres no hard and fast rule about what makes a great lede. A good lede changes depending on the story youre writing. One of the best ways to get familiar with what a good lede is, is to read. Read lots of different stories. Read breaking news stories. Read features. Read reviews. Ledes vary wildly but, youll start to notice patterns and, more importantly, what kinds of ledes you like and feel are effective.
Nutgrafs can also be harder to identify than ledes so a good exercise to read lots of different stories and try to find the nutgraf. (If you do this outside of a classroom setting, it might be a good idea to find someone who can go over your findings with you.)
Headlines are written in bold and are typically larger than the press release text. Conventional press release headlines are present-tense and exclude "a" and "the" as well as forms of the verb "to be" in certain contexts. The first word in the press release headline should be capitalized, as should all proper nouns. Most headline words appear in lower-case letters, although adding a stylized "small caps" style can create a more graphically news-attractive look and feel. Do not capitalize every word. The simplest method to arrive at the press release headline is to extract the most important keywords from your press release. Now from these keywords, try to frame a logical and attention-getting statement. Using keywords will give you better visibility in search engines, and it will be simpler for journalists and readers to get the idea of the press release content. 2. Write the press release body copy. The press release should be written as you want it to appear in a news story. Start with the date and city in which the press release is originated. The city may be omitted if it will be confusing. The lead, or first sentence, should grab the reader and say concisely what is happening. The next 1-2 sentences then expand upon the lead. The press release body copy should be compact. Avoid using very long sentences and paragraphs. Avoid repetition and over use of fancy language and jargon. A first paragraph (two to three sentences) must actually sum up the press release and the further content must elaborate it. In a fast-paced world, neither journalists nor other readers would read the entire press release if the start of the article didn't generate interest. Deal with actual facts - events, products, services, people, targets, goals, plans, projects. Try to provide maximum use of concrete facts. A simple method for writing an effective press release is to make a list of following things: 3. Communicate the 5 Ws and the H. Who, what, when, where, why, and how. Then consider the points below if pertinent.
What is the actual news? Why this is news. ? The people, products, items, dates and other things related with the news The purpose behind the news Your company - the source of this news
Now from the points gathered, try to construct paragraphs and assemble them sequentially: The headline > the summary or introduction of the news > event or achievements > product > people > again the concluding summary > the company. The length of a press release should be no more than three pages. If you are sending a hard copy, text should be double-spaced.
The more newsworthy you make the press release copy, the better the chances of it being selected by a journalist for reporting. Find out what "newsworthy" means to a given market and use it to hook the editor or reporter. 4. Include information about the Organization. When a journalist picks up your press release for a story, he/she would logically have to mention the organization in the news article. Journalists can then get the company information from this section.
The title for this section should be - About XYZ_ORGANIZATION After the title, use a paragraph or two to describe your company with 5/6 lines each. The text must describe your company, its core business and the business policy. Many businesses already have professionally written brochures, presentations, business plans, etc. - that introductory text can be put here. At the end of this section, point to your website. The link should be the exact and complete URL without any embedding so that, even if this page is printed, the link will be printed as it is.
5. Tie it together. Provide some extra information links that support your press release. 6. Add contact information. If your press release is really newsworthy, journalists would surely like more information or would like to interview key people associated with it. If you are comfortable with the idea of letting your key people be contacted directly by media, you can provide their contact details on the press release page itself. For example, in case of some innovation, you can provide the contact information of your engineering or research team for the media. Otherwise, you must provide the details of your media/PR department in the "Contact" section. If you do not have dedicated team for this function, you must appoint somebody who will act as a link between the media and your people. The contact details must be limited and specific only to the current press release. The contact details must include:
The Organization's Official Name Media Department's official Name and Contact Person Office Address Telephone and fax Numbers with proper country/city codes and extension numbers Mobile Phone Number (optional) Timings of availability E-mail Addresses Web site Address
7. Signal the end of the press release with three # symbols, centered directly underneath the last line of the release. This is a journalistic standard.
Memo Format Company and/or department name (without address) Heading To (who gets it) From (who sent it) Subject (what its about) Date (when it was sent)
Memo Style
Concise: Make your sentences, paragraph, and overall memo as brief and as focused as possible. Clear: Get your purpose straight before you start, then plan what you want to say and in what order. Use your memo layout to help your reader (headings, bulleted lists, white space, as appropriate). Direct: Speak directly to your reader, as you would in person or on the phone. Do not pad your ideas with unnecessary details. Think of what questions your reader wants answered, and then answer them. Clean: Reread, revise, copyedit, and proofread.
Memo Structure Subject Line: Summarizes the main idea; think of it as being preceded by the words "This memo is about." Introductory paragraph: Quickly orients the reader to what the memo is about.
Give your purpose for writing. Supply any relevant background information. Identify any task the memo is related to.
Body: Conveys the information and supporting details relevant to the memo's purpose Keep paragraphs short and focused; one main idea per paragraph. Keep sentences tight and informative Use bullets to list information
Close: End courteously (think of a phone call or face-to-face meeting), stating any expected outcome, action, or other information appropriate to your purpose. For example,
