YOUME SHUHADA AND ANZAC DAY

As you receive this newsletter, Yaum-eShuhada is being observed in Pakistan with solemnity. This Day is being observed to remember the thirty-five thousand innocent civilians martyred during terrorist attacks including women children and over three thousand military and security personnel fighting valiantly against the terrorists. The day began with special prayers in mosques after Fajr prayers for the eternal peace of the departed souls and a resolve to defeat the terrorism and uproot it permanently. Wreath laying ceremonies are held at Yadgar-e-Shuhada across the country to commemorate the sacrifices of Pakistan Army. The people will pay tributes to Armed Forces and its agencies for sacrificing their lives in fighting the terrorism with main ceremony being held at GHQ Rawalpindi tonight where Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is the host. Pakistanis in Australia took the lead yesterday by remembering the sacrifices and combining this event with ANZAC day. Two movies were screened namely The Sounds of Silence and Life of a Siachen Soldier with tributes to both Australian and Pakistani troops. Amina Syed in her speech Living a vision spoke at length about the vision of Quaide Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah referring to his speeches. VOLUNTEER MIGRANTS REQUIRED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY

A unique study into accidents and injuries among migrant workers in Perth is looking for volunteers to help them investigate why people who were not born in Australia face more hazards at work than their colleagues. WAIMR Researcher, Cema Santos, who is running the study, says volunteers will be asked to fill in a questionnaire and will also be asked questions in focus groups about their perceptions of risk in the workplace."I'd like to speak to men and women born in Africa, Asia, Middle East and Latin America," she said. "Volunteers need to be aged between 18 and 70 and be employed, even if it's on a casual basis. They must also speak English." "We realise that recruits to the study will need to go to work, so we are flexible about meeting times and we can even travel to visit different communities for meetings in the evening. Our focus groups last for an hour and a half and we will serve refreshments." If you would like to join the study, or have questions, please phone Cema on 9346 1514 or email cema.santos@waimr.uwa.edu.au.
