Anthony Casack Mequette Sorenson ETHS 2430 4/25/2012 I have decided to do an issue that I feel should be addressed not only in class but by the government also. I choose to do families separated by deportation for many reasons but the main reason is to keep the families together since I know how hard it is to grow up without a parent. I also believe that this is creating more problems than just deportation issues. Because children being separated from their parents can have a negative effect on the child development. It also gives the children less chance to succeed in life. If there is no family member to step in and take care of the child then they get awarded to the state and undocumented family members do not qualify to step in and help with the child. If they are awarded to the state there is a twenty two month time period for parent to get their child/children back or they could get legally adopted out and possibly split apart even more. My solution is to help get undocumented immigrants to get documentation while contributing to society. The immigrants would be able to still work and live normal lives while getting their documentation. This program might even help immigrants with not being so withdrawn from the community and frightened be to deported. The immigrants would be placed on supervised probation during the process. While on probation there would be certain stages that each immigrant would have to go through.

The first stage would consist of a background check so that way we would not be giving criminals documentation. People with violent crimes, fugitives and felons would be disqualified. After the first stage the second stage would consist of informing the client about what would and would not be allowed while on probation. Things like they would have to work so many hours a week in order to pay for their supervision fees and to help pay for the process of documentation. These would very from client to client bases because each case would be different. The third stage would be to get the client started on the classes that would be needed for the documentation process. We would also have different trades that we would teach them to better help them succeed during and after the documentation process is over. probation would be terminated and unsupervised would begin. During the unsupervised probation stage there may be a monthly fee still but would last for five years up to ten years. During this time the client/clients would not be permitted to obtain any felonies but could receive up to seven misdemeanors. If the client received more than seven misdemeanors or any felonies their documentation would be revoked then the deportation process would begin. My solution to this problem would help immigrants to receive documentation and help the economy. I believe that everyone deserves a chance at the American dream because we all have ancestors who were once immigrants unless you are Native American.

I interviewed Shawn Kiracofe who works for the Utah Department of Corrections. In this interview we discussed the costs for supervision. To supervise just one person for one day it would cost $6.91. To supervise one person one person for one month it would cost $207.03. To supervise someone for one year the cost would be $2522.15. If the client/clients needed more amenities like a place to stay, food, washer & dryer, it would cost $69.88 a day per person. For one month it would cost $2096.04. For one year the cost would equal $25506.02. I also contacted the Department of Child and Family Services to find out how much how much is spent on children in foster care do to deportation unfortunately I was unable to contact the person who would know but in the annual report that is done every year on page 25 it shows a table that shows expenditures/ contracted services cost $68,460,900 / personnel $61,330,400 / division operations $21,181,400. This is approximately 1.25 percent of the total children in foster care. If the same rates holds true for new cases, in the next five years, at least 15,000 more children will face these threats to reunification with their detained and deported mothers and fathers. These children face formidable barriers to reunification with their families. Also I found in my research I found that President Obama has got a new bill passed in order to help with the broken immigration laws but it is not enough. There is a report that could increase concerns among some politically important Latino voters over the failure of Obama not delivering on some of his promises. Mark Krikorian is the executive director of the Center for immigration, a Washington D.C, studies and he says that it is just a political ploy in order to gain support for Obama to let more illegals remain into the country and allow them to gain

legal status. He also goes on to say that Obama is just trying to get momentum for his administrative amnesty where parents of U.S kids are trying to stay Krikorian said. There have been record numbers of deportations under President Obama. New directives from the President have instructed ICE to provide some administrative relief, using their prosecutorial discretion to focus on only undocumented criminals, but such numbers will not be reflected until ICEs next report. I also read that there were some law enforcement priorities put into ICE so that their focus is on those with criminal convictions, repeat offenders, fugitives. The U.S spends $2.6 trillion dollars on deportation about every ten years. Also a 2009 report by the Department of Homeland Securitys General estimated that more than 100,000 parents of U.S-born children had been deported between 1998 and 2007. An analysis of ICE statistics shows that the 46,486 parents of U.S.-citizen children deported during the first six months of 2011 represented 22 percent of the overall 211,167 people ICE deported during that time period. The people that would be opposed to my plane would more or less be the people not for progress. The reason I say that is because I believe that it would make our nation stronger because once someone strives for something and succeeds they do not tend to just settle for what they did they keep striving and that could only make us stronger. Other people that would be against this plane would also be tax payers because their belief could be that they should not pay for immigrants to become U.S citizens but to dispute that is it would be money better spent than just deportation. Because deportation is just a want to be quick fix to a growing problem. Racist people would also be against this just because they are ignorant. I mean it is

cool to have pride in you culture and where you come from but to think that you are better than anyone else just because of the color of your skin is just wrong. Politicians could be against this for the simple fact that our national debt is so much that they are looking for programs to cut and we have already lost our triple A credit rating. Plus there is not any real research to say how successful this program would be.

I believe that my critical thinking has improved. I think that i am good at looking at the bigger picture. Now I can look at both sides and distinguish for myself what is right or wrong. I would like to say that my communication is a little bit more affective. Now I could take in some ones culture so I would be able to be more affective in my career. Being more effective in my career means not being offensive. It also means to help people know their options, and resources. I would like to say that with this course I have learned how to do more affective work myself and also in a group setting. With this ability it would help me in my career when I will have to work with an individual and others for the best possible out come
