Installation
WellCat is on the CD labeled Volume 9. Two basic types of installations are available. Local installations are recommended for stand-alone computers and for customers who have not licensed a network version of the application. Client/Server installations are recommended for network environments where a multiuser floating license scheme is used. The Server installation places the appropriate application files on a network-accessible disk. Server installation should be performed from the server console where the application files are to be installed. After a server installation is performed, all client workstations accessing the application must perform a client installation.

After you determine the appropriate installation type, refer to the procedures below for further instructions.

Local Installation

Licensing
WellCat Release2003.0.4 supports use of FLEXlm licensing, which is the only licensing mechanism supported by Landmark. FLEXlm licensing has been supported with past releases, so many clients will already be using this licensing mechanism. FLEXlm licensing is available for networked application and standalone application use. FLEXlm standalone licensing may be used in conjunction with a network card or through a FLEXlm dongle (bitlock) where no PC network identification is possible. Previous versions of WellCat supported use of a proprietary Landmark licensing mechanism called Netsecure for networks. Additionally, Sentinel bitlocks attached to a PCs parallel port could be used for licensing of standalone installs, Crypkey licensing was also supported for standalone installs. Use of Netsecure, Sentinel bitlocks and Crypkey has been discontinued by Landmark and is not supported for use with Release2003.0.3. Customers who have previously installed and run WellCat 2003.0.3 are already using the correct FLEXlm licensing and LAM server, and dont need to upgrade their licensing. However, clients who are upgrading from versions older than 2003.0.3 must re-license WellCat by contacting their local Landmark representative. Refer to the LAM 2003.0Windows Release Notes (LAMReleaseNotes.pdf), located in the \Products\EDT\Install\LAM folder on CD 5, for details.

IMPORTANT! If you have a version of LAM server older than 7.2e (Release 2003.0 and later), you must uninstall it before installing the LAM 2003 server. Failure to uninstall all previous versions of LAM Server before installing LAM Server 2003 will result in a duplicate FLEXlm service that replicates itself until it crashes Windows. The procedures for uninstalling LAM server are detailed in the section LAM Server - Uninstallation Notes in the LAM 2003.0Windows Release Notes (LAMReleaseNotes.pdf), located in the Products\EDT\Install\LAM folder on CD 6. Products that were licensed under the older server will still work with the new LAM server.

IMPORTANT! If you are using a FLEXlm dongle (bitlock), you must install FLEXlm 7.2i on the standalone or client machine. To install FLEXlm 7.2i for bitlocks (either parallel or USB): 1. Go to your installed \LAM\bin folder, and run flexid.exe to install the bitlock drivers. 2. To request a bitlock license, run \LAM\bin\lmtools.exe. Select System Settings tab; provide the value you see in the FLEXID9 field.

Enhancements and New Functionality

Packers
Schematics New schematics for different packer types were added to the Tube Module. The Packer Schematics provide a visual display of the forces, pressures, and temperatures acting on the packer, as well as packer and tubing crosssectional areas. Packer Schematics are not available for dual completions. Display options for the Packer Schematics include: ASV Options A new option was added to the Packers Details tab to indicate whether the ASV valve is open or closed. Packer + Expansion Joint A new packer type combination, Packer + Expansion Joint, was added to the Packers dialog in the Tube Module. When this type is selected, additional information relative to the packer and the associated expansion joint must be input. Packer Load Summary The Packer Load Summary has been enhanced to display the axial load above and below the packer, the annulus pressure above and below the packer, and the temperature, in addition to the tubing-to-packer, latching force, and packerto-casing force previously included in the summary. Expansion Joint Load/Movement Summary A new load/movement summary table has been added to report shear pin force and shear pin status for non-sheared expansion joints as well as movement and movement status for sheared expansion joints. Tubing to Packer Forces Latching Force Packer to Casing Force Cross-sectional Areas

Multiple Packer Load Table For a selected packer, this table displays results for multiple loads on the packer. Results include axial loads, pressures, temperatures, tubing-to-packer forces, packer-to-casing forces, and latching forces.

WellSteam
New steam injection functionality was added to model steam injection down the tubing, annulus, or both tubing and annulus. For injection operations, it is possible to define single-phase, or two-phase steam injection depending on the steam phase (wet saturated, or dry superheated). WellCat uses the rigorous PVT model for steam and water developed by NIST (National Government Research Lab).

Multiphase Correlations
Three new mechanistic models, including Zhang, Kaya, and Ansari, were added to the list of available multi-phase correlations.

ISO Connections
ISO Connection functionality is strictly for the purposes of storing, reporting, saving, displaying, and visual comparison of connection data. No engineering analysis is performed. ISO Library An ISO Connection Library and Inventory was added to WellCat. The library can be used to add connections and associated ratings to WellCat. Connections and ratings can also be copied from Excel, or input using the ISO Connection dialog. The ISO Inventory is a read-only display of ISO Connection and rating data contained in the library. Enhanced ISO Connection Dialog The ISO Connection dialog can be used to input ISO connections and associated ratings. These connections and ratings can then be exported to an ISO Library. You can also use the ISO Connection dialog to import ISO connections and ratings from one or more ISO Libraries. The ISO Connection dialog also controls what ISO connection data is displayed on the Design Limits plot for analysis purposes.

Saving ISO Connections and Ratings in WellCat wcd Files You will have the option of saving ISO connections and ratings to a wcd file when you save your data. This is optional. You do not have to save the ISO connection data to the wcd file.

AFE Custom Loads

The AFE Custom Loads dialog has been completely revised to simplify the creation of the custom loads. You can edit the internal and external fluids for both AFE, max burst, and max collapse loads except for those that were defined for Prod operations. When applicable, AFE, burst, and collapse loads account for the presence of internal cement columns. Multiple AFE zones are considered when building load case pressure profiles.

Capstan Effect
As part of the Capstan Forces implementation, buckling and torsional formulation were updated based on recent publications. For more information, refer to: Zdvizhkov, Andrey Alexander, Miska, Stefan, and Mitchell, Robert F., Measurement and Analysis of Induced Torsion in Helically Buckled Pipe, SPE 92274. Mitchell, R. F., "The Twist and Shear of Helically Buckled Pipe," SPE Drilling & Completion, March 2004.

Well Schematics
Well Schematics were enhanced to display expansion joints, and closed or open annular safety valves.

Improved Brine Density Correlations

The brine model in WellCat has been upgraded. This has led to small but noticeable changes in the results of the temperature calculations, when compared with the previous release. This change is most noticeable in subsea wells at the mudline. This change dissipates rapidly as the distance from the mudline increases. Note that this change is found even if there are no brines used in the Wellbore construction or in the operations. The reason is, the seawater that is above the mudline is modeled as an NaCl brine. So the properties of the seawater changed slightly. Since the boundary condition of the heat problem at the mudline involves seawater properties, the results change noticeably in the topmost grid (i.e. at the mudline).

Known Problems
The following known problems are scheduled to be resolved in a later release. Detailed descriptions for these critical defects are available on the LGC website at http://www.lgc.com/customersupport/searchsupport/solutionsdefectsenhancements/ default.asp. Login password and user id can be obtained from LGC Support. 149353 Need validation to warn user about effects of changing Well Depth from General dialog from an existing file without reviewing/updating other pertinent input data. 150177 Multiple Loads/Length Change Bar Charteach load case appears multiple times. 150342 Inventory columns appear distorted if you click on locked cells while adding a new pipe record to the inventory. 151461 Need Lower minimum limit on the molecular weight input of VLE heavy components. 152158 Enhance VLE model to track fronts when a single phase injection operation is linked to another one with multiphase fluid. Discussion: In the treatment of well killing operation (injection of a liquid after production) when the produced fluid is VLE hydrocarbon vs. Black-Oil, in the former, the well contents are immediately replaced by the injected liquids; in the latter, a piston-like displacement occurs. 153230 UI not in tune with engine tracking tubing movement while setting the packers. 154066 Temperature results for two adjacent liners with same hanger depth. 157732 Default point of fixity when outer-most string selected for WHM analysis is not the same as the outer-most string defined in casing and tubing configuration. 157738 Internal shut-in not modeled while injection is done in the annulus. 159151 Dual Tubing - Tubing-to-Packer Force incorrectly calculated for the long string. 159154 Dual Tubing - A special scenario can yield wrong answers. 166738 Gas lift allowed in sub-sea wells with only one pipe going to the surface. 167788 Unit system conversion - 2 equal parameters in meters get different feet values. 168318 Opening files directly from CDs won't return AFE results. 172852 Inventory window breaks into several headers when scrolling down and back up with mouse wheel. 619895 Casing Load Summary fails to report data at Plug Depth from Press Test case.

Printing from Acrobat Reader

These Release Notes are in pdf format and can be accessed online using Help > Release Notes. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, which is a free download available via the Adobe webpage. It may be simpler for you to print these Release Notes than to use them online while you are trying to install. When printing ranges of pages in Acrobat Reader, you must use the status bar at the bottom of Acrobat Reader to get the most accurate indicator of which page you are looking at. The page numbers at the bottom of an online page or other page number references in the online document are not the page numbers that Acrobat uses when you select a range of pages in its Print dialog. This situation is especially true in online books, where the table of contents uses one page numbering scheme and the body of the book uses another. For example, to print a section from the Release Notes, follow a procedure similar to the following: 1. In the bookmark pane of Acrobat, select the name of the section that you want to print. 2. Note the page number in the status bar. 3. Display the last page in the section. 4. Note the page number of the last page in the status bar. 5. Select File > Print to display the Print dialog. 6. Enter the page numbers that you noted in the From and To text boxes in the Print dialog. 7. Click OK. Acrobat will then print the pages of the section.
