Chinchilla which are really booming at the moment, carting all sorts of odd shapes and sizes. The trailer is used to cart a wide variety of machinery, from graders, compactors and rollers, to excavators and dump trucks you name it, weve carried it on the Titan trailer. The 11m Titan low loader with dolly was received and put to work around five months ago and is capable of carrying up to 48 tonne. While we hadnt dealt with Titan before, we found their prices to be very competitive and their product to be great quality. Titan gave us the flexibility to order to suit our requirements so that the finished product was exactly what we were after. There were changes to the floor, extra tie down points added and we were able to specify the axle configuration we were after, says Noel.

Queensland company, Budden Contractors, purchased a quad axle spread deck low loader and dolly from Titan Manufacturing earlier this year, its first trailer from the manufacturer. Based in Chinchilla, the company now operates three low loaders and a range of tippers. Swedish truck manufacturer, Scania, has already made some euro 6 trucks available on the european market well ahead of its introduction in 2013. tim Giles speaks to the engineer responsible for the new models engine at the companys HQ.

he series of exhaust emission regulation changes of the past 20 years have come thick and fast. the latest emission reduction to affect europe will be introduced in 2013. euro 6 sees a reduction in nitrogen oxides allowed and a sizeable tightening on the amount of particulate matter in exhaust gases. Scanias development team in Sodertalje, just outside Stockholm in Sweden, explained to Prime Mover what has had to be done to the engine systems over the line to meet the latest regulations. euro 6 comes into effect as of 1 January 2013 for new models and extends to all truck models in europe on 1 January 2014. Scania has already released some of the new models onto the european truck market in anticipation of some october 2011
governments offering incentives to trucking operators who moved to the cleaner trucks earlier than they are mandated. Low emission incentives were effective in bringing forward the adoption of euro 5 technology in many countries in europe. however, no major european country has yet announced any measure, either reduced road tax or reduced road tolls. the european Union only recently finalised the euro 6 emission level figures first suggested in July 2009, giving truck manufacturers a tight deadline. Apart from the usual limits of allowable pollutants in exhaust gases, a new kind of limit was introduced. this restricts the number of individual particles permitted to be emitted. nitrogen oxides are reduced by 80% when compared to euro 5 levels, down to 0.4g per kilowatt hour. Particulate matter is halved to 0.01g per kilowatt
hour with carbon monoxide unchanged at 1.5 and hydrocarbons reduced by 75% to 0.13. euro 6 has been, and is, a challenge to us, says Bjorn Westman, Scanias engineering Director, head of engine Development. in practice, the mass limit for particulates has made the amount of particulate matter the engines can emit much smaller than the regulators imagined, i think. When we started looking at euro 6, particulate counting was not on the table. Different scenarios with nitrogen oxide levels and particulate matter mass were discussed along with their effects on fuel economy. the politicians set the limits knowing it would drive a 2% fuel economy penalty when compared to continuing with euro 5. it was clear to us it would be possible to achieve half the particular mass emissions without
Tailored FreighT was born Five and a halF years ago when Two besT maTes made The decision To sTarT Their own TransporT business To service The needs oF melbournes Fresh produce markeTs. and according To iTs Founders, The business has been based on qualiTy raTher Than quanTiTy From The very beginning.
As the son of highly regarded horse trainer John Hawkes of Hawkes Racing, Wayne Hawkes was surrounded by trucks from quite a young age and is now a well-known horse trainer himself. Since I was about 10 years of age, I travelled around the country with Goldners Horse Transport from Adelaide and thats how the trucks started for me, says Wayne. I always said I was going to own the biggest and best float company around but that went by the wayside and I became a horse trainer instead, before establishing Tailored Freight, so it all just marries together really well. The opportunity to start Tailored Freight arose when Waynes long time friend, Todd Moraitis, was working for his uncle Nick at the Melbourne fruit market. At the time Todd knew everything there is to know about fruit and vegetables so thats basically how it started, says Wayne, who began Tailored Freight with Todd in mid 2006. The business almost started overnight. Tailored Freight began with four employees and now employs 11. Based near the Argosy both of which still have their place in the fleet today. Before long, the demand placed on the two vehicles had increased and there was a need to implement a third vehicle within the first six months of the companys operations. This year another two vehicles were added to the a new supermarket depot was being built on the Albury and Wodonga border and Todds uncle needed to have some freight transported. Footscray market in Melbourne, Tailored Freight began its life with two B-doubles, towed by a second hand 2005 Mack Vision prime mover and a brand new Freightliner
fleet, bringing the total number of prime movers to five and the total number of trailers up to 11. Tailored Freight now operates nine insulated tautliners and two refrigerated pantech trailers which all operate as B-doubles, servicing the Melbourne, Wodonga and Shepparton districts as well as all the distribution centres in between. Fruit and vegetable cartage accounts for approximately 90 per cent of operations, while general cartage takes up the remaining 10 per cent. And while there has been several opportunities for the company to travel interstate, Wayne says that the companys fleet is geared to service the needs of Victoria. We dont want to be the biggest but we are trying to be the best, he says. It is easy to get too big and lose sight of the big picture. We are quite happy to stay around this sort of number of trucks. Every trailer in the fleet has been manufactured by Freighter, with all but one trailer purchased brand new. The most recent trailer purchased is a second hand Freighter trailer that has been completely refurbished. All vehicles in the fleet operate seven days a week and the business is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and Good Friday. Horse training is no different to the fruit and vegetable market, it also runs seven days a week so the two work hand in hand, Wayne says.

New MD and CEO for IAL
Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) has announced the appointment of Koichi Yoda as Managing Director and CEO, replacing Masayuki (Yuki) Murata who held the position for eight years. Mr Yoda, who officially took over the role on 1 April, has an extensive background with Isuzu Motors Limited, including several senior positions. He began his career at Isuzu in 1980 after completing a law degree. After nine years at Isuzu Motors, Japan, he transferred to American Isuzu Motors Inc. Mr Yoda worked in North America for seven years and held positions that included CFO of American Isuzu Motors Inc. When he returned to Japan, he took on several senior roles including General Manager for the GM Project Department, and later worked at the North American Operations Department. He was appointed CEO of GM Isuzu Camiones Andinos (Colombia and Ecuador) before once again returning to Japan in 2011 to take on the responsibility of Associate Division Executive for Export Sales regard by Isuzu Motors, Japan. According to Mr Yoda, the Australian market is unique and although IAL enjoys a strong position here, there are future challenges to overcome. Australia is a sophisticated and mature market, he said. Regulatory requirements are strict and many manufacturers compete here. A few years ago the bulk of Isuzus direct competition came from Japanese manufactures, but more recently Korean companies have entered the market along with some Chinese competitors. With the increasing competitive pressure its important that Isuzu continues to provide customers with a total offering its not just about the product itself but the support services we can provide our customers. Outgoing Managing Director and CEO, Yuki Murata, has been assigned to Europe to take on the role of Chairman, Isuzu Motors Europe Ltd. Ive been fortunate to have worked with IAL for eight years and will have many fond memories of my time here, he said. I have no doubt that IALs success will continue under Yoda.
Division No. 1. Mr Yoda said he is looking forward to the opportunities and challenges the Australian role will bring. The Australian market is an extremely important one for Isuzu Motors, he said. With 23 years of consecutive truck market leadership here, the Isuzu brand has a tremendous presence and history in this country. Our strong performance in Australia over many years is certainly held in the highest

Hino Dealer of the Year Awards
t the Hino Dealer of the Year Awards, Hino Motor Sales Australia named Brisbane-based Sci-Fleet as the Hino metropolitan dealer of the year and Bendigo Truck Centre as the regional dealer of the year for 2011. The awards were announced at an official gala awards dinner in Sydney on Friday, 20 April 2012. The awards were presented by President and Chief Operating Officer of Hino Australia, Steve Lotter. Sci-Fleet Dealer Principal, Craig Andersson, accepted the metropolitan award; and Dealer Principal of Bendigo Truck Centre, Steve Elliott, accepted the regional award. Mr Lotter said the 2011 awards were particularly important considering the number of challenges faced throughout the year. These awards recognise the dedication of the Hino dealer network, especially in the wake of a number of significant natural disasters in 2011 both at home
and in Japan, he said. Our dealers were all impacted by stock shortages following the devastating Japanese earthquake and tsunami, but their strong resolve and commitment to customers saw sales recover strongly. Craig and the team at Sci-Fleet are to be congratulated on their achievements - especially given the dealership was severely damaged in
the January 2011 Brisbane floods. It was also pleasing to see Steve Elliott and his team at Bendigo win the regional dealer of the year award their dealership continues to go from strength to strength and we congratulate them on their success. Both Mr Andersson and Mr Elliott recognised the hard work and dedication of their staff in winning their awards.
TC Chief Officer Projects, Meena Naidu will take on a temporary role as Acting Project Director in a secondment to the COAG Road Reform Plan (CRRP) team. Ms Naidu will utilise her knowledge and experience in heavy vehicle pricing in her new role, and is excited to be joining the team. Im looking forward to continuing to engage with all levels of government and industry stakeholders to build on the work carried out to date and develop implementable options to
progress COAGs road reform agenda, says Meena. The CRRP project aims to promote a more efficient provision and use of heavy freight infrastructure in the face of a rapidly increasing amount of freight on Australian roads. A feasibility study investigating alternative arrangements for heavy vehicle road pricing and funding takes centre stage in the project. The study was completed in December 2011 and will now be considered for endorsement by the Council of
Australian Governments (COAG). A range of alternative charging models were considered in the study, aimed at better aligning the road prices charged with the actual costs imposed by a vehicle on the roads (based on the mass carried, distance travelled and types of roads used). Were pleased to have Meena join the CRRP project team and look forward to working with her as we prepare for COAGs direction on the feasibility study, says Gary Liddle, CRRP Project Board Chairman.

NTC sponsors luncheon to attract more young women to the transport industry
he National Transport Commission (NTC) recently sponsored the Strongest Link luncheon aimed at educating young women about career opportunities in the supply chain and logistics industry. NTC Chief Officer Policy, Meena Naidu and Senior Policy Analyst, Jane Cureton represented the NTC at the event, which was attended by female high school students from several schools in the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne. The NTC are proud to have been
able to sponsor this event and support an initiative to attract more women to consider a career in supply chain or logistics field, said Ms Naidu. This sector continues to thrive and expand and it is important that young people are aware of the exciting careers available so we can ensure the future prosperity of the industry. The luncheon was hosted by Victoria Universitys Institute for Supply and Logistics and also attended by those already working in the
field in various industries and the government sector. These attendees were able to share their experiences with the students and highlight the career opportunities available. The speakers at the event illustrated the diversity of positions available in the supply chain and logistics field in areas such as defense and fashion, said Ms Cureton. Women are under-represented in this industry and the luncheon was a great way to demonstrate the exciting opportunities available.
Earlier this month, the NT Minister for Lands and Planning, Gerry McCarthy, wrote to the Northern Territory Road Transport Association, an Australian Trucking Association (ATA) member, saying the territory government would not implement the national registration charge increase. Instead, the NT will increase registration charges by a flat 3.7
per cent, and reduce charges on A-trailers to match semi-trailers. It will defer the increases until 1 January 2013. The NT Government has no control over the fuel tax rate. ATA Chairman, David Simon, said the NT Government had shown the way forward on truck charges, because many operators will struggle to deal with the 10.4 per cent increase decided nationally.
Australia reports are produced monthly, and compare road death data from the last five years to the current month. The March report shows that in the 12 month period from March 2011 to March 2012, the national road toll was 1301, compared to 1328 fatalities in the year March 2010 to
March 2011. Males made up over two-thirds of the toll. Per head of population, the Northern Territory had the most fatalities, with 20.76 deaths per 100,000 people for March 2011 to March 2012. In comparison, NSW had 5.21 deaths per 100,000 people in the same period.

QLD Premier presents Bruce Highway Crisis Management Group
he Newman LNP Government has underlined its commitment to fix the Bruce Highway. Queensland Premier Campbell Newman announced the membership of the Bruce Highway Crisis Management Group, bringing together state and federal representatives, motoring groups and local authorities to act as one for a concerted and relentless campaign to upgrade the Bruce Highway. The LNP team committed to making safety and flood immunity the fundamental priorities of our 10 year Crisis Action Plan for the Bruce Highway, Mr Newman said. We have already committed $1 billion of state
funds for the Bruce Highway on the condition the Federal Government urgently brings forward expenditure to fix this link within 10 years, so now they need to step up to the plate. The Premier said that three Local Government representatives would be added to complement the group, once the outcome of the April 28 Council elections was known. The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) recently found around 60 per cent of deaths on Queenslands National Highways occurred on the Bruce Highway. Peak motoring body RACQ estimates without urgent action 350 people
will die on the Bruce Highway in the next 10 years and more than 5000 will be injured. The LNP is leading the campaign to call for an all-out effort to get Federal Government funds for the upgrading of the states main National Highway. As a priority the Government will task the Department of Main Roads to compile a proper engineering-based 10-year Crisis Action Plan to address the Bruce Highway crisis. According to the Queensland Premier, the Crisis Action Plan will be completed within the first six months of the LNP Government.
he heavy haulage industry will soon be able to benefit from a new one stop shop for heavy vehicle permit matters and a $250,000 State Government initiative to underground power lines over the Great Northern Highway. Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the creation of the one stop shop at Main Roads WA would end the need for transport operators to deal with three or four separate agencies to obtain permits for a single shift. Feedback from the industry was that red tape was causing significant delays when planning the movement of over-sized loads across the States road network, Mr Buswell
said. Given the significance of the resources industry to the Western Australian economy, we need to make sure Government does what it can to allow the heavy haulage industry to operate as efficiently as possible. According to Mr Buswell, the creation of the one stop shop for permits will mean that a transport operator will only have to make one application to Main Roads WA in order to obtain an Oversize Load Permit, a Police Escort and get a referral to Western Power for power line clearance. The Minister said the industry had complained to the Government for several years about the cost of the
temporary lifting of the lines to allow oversized loads to pass through. To assist the industry the State Government, through Main Roads WA, has provided funding to Western Power to underground eight lines which cross Great Northern Highway between Perth and Newman, Mr Buswell said. The heavy haulage industry agrees that these eight lines, which have a height clearance of less than 6.5m, are problematic for efficient operations. Mr Buswell said work to underground the lines was expected to be completed by the end of May 2012 and could potentially save operators up to $15,000 per trip.
