COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH May 6, 2012 Fifth Sunday of Easter

SAN DIEGO

Pastors Corner ~
THE GOD OF FRUITFULNESS
Relationships and connections are very important in life. They are sources of power, strength and inspirations that enable us to achieve our goals and accomplish our dreams. Knowing that we are loved and we love someone keeps us going in our everyday life despite the difficulties we encounter. Relationships energize us to produce fruits in our labors and help us overcome hardships. The gospel speaks about this kind of relationship and spiritual connection. God is the vine grower, Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. We need to be connected to God through Jesus Christ, for without Him we can do nothing. With Him who strengthens us, we can do everything. Fruitfulness is not just about accomplishing something quantifiable, but includes the quality of fulfillment of our interiority. It is not just the increase of good things but also the decrease of evil. Jesus illustrated in the gospel that before one can be fruitful, pruning is necessary. He prunes whatever is not necessary in life. Discipline is like pruning where God the vine grower removes in us what would harm our salvation. Sometimes it hurts us and sometimes we dont understand but Gods pruning and discipline surely develops in us virtues that will make us better persons.
