Delphos, Ohio addition for its frozen foods. By 1999, the company served 4,000 grocers in six states. Over its lifetime, the company began distributing national brand and proprietary products such as Yoplait, Hellmanns, Stouffers and Nestles. It also had sales offices in locations around the Midwest from Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland to Indianapolis, Detroit and three other cities. In the late 1990s, Chef Solutions, Inc. made I&K a division and at one point, the production and distribution were separated and owned by different companies based far outside of Americas Friendliest City. In 2007, a group of investors led by Ramex, Inc., purchased the company and its sales offices. It announced that year that Countryside Foods, LLC, had taken over but, like Chef Solutions, kept Illig and Klausings presence in the name. By 2008, the company distributed more than 4,500 SKUs and up to 50,000 cases each day with even more during peak season. The company had a product line that included refrigerated dairy, deli, bakery, meat and grocery items sold to some 4,200 customers from an 84,000-square-foot distribution center with two miles of conveyors.

DELPHOS With a large warehousing and distribution operation, handling the various food products of more than 180 brands, I&K Distributors is expected to close over the next several months. The company was recently purchased by Lipari Foods, Inc., and according to anonymous sources at I&K, told employees to expect to lose a major contract in mid-July. This could spur a large round of layoffs and workers are expected to be phased out entirely by the end of summer or early autumn. This means the possible loss of approximately 125 jobs in Delphos. So far, Lipari Foods Representative Laura Liras would only say the company is evaluating but was not more specific. I&K Distributors, named for James Illig and Ronald Klausing, started in 1966 with the purchase of a salad business Ralph Yoder founded in 1945. The company specialized in manufacturing and distributing potato and macaroni salads to 75 Delphos-area customers with just one company truck. By 1972, I&K had moved to Gressel Drive and had expanded to eight delivery trucks. Since its initial days of 4-6 stock-keeping units being delivered, warehouse operations greatly expanded over the following four decades. Over the years, different brands have been added to the local companys branding. Yoders continued to be its most widely-known brand but I&K also produced Renos pizzas, Bernea Farms and Copperwood Kitchens products. Renos was introduced in 1974 and was in 23 states by 1980. In 1979, the company added a 9,000-square-foot refrigerated storage and distribution center. It had also added 14 refrigerated trucks and merged with Delphos Frozen Specialties in 1982. DELPHOS In 2006, Cintas Corporation of Cincinnati purchased Van Dyne Crotty, which maintained a local facility. Not long after the acquisition, the Delphos location was closed. For several years since, the building and the fencing surrounding it have fallen victim to wear and tear. Though part of the heavily-rusted fence is caving in and there is rust on the building, as well as some brick and paint damage, a Cintas representative says the buildings condition is a matter of opinion. Im not the real estate administrator for the company. Im the spokesperson but I know we keep up our vacant properties. We maintain them, said representative Heather Maley. When asked to elaborate on the extent of what it means to maintain such properties, she replied we check on them periodically. We hire vendors and contractors to maintain them to make any necessary repairs. Taliban kill 7 in Afghan capital after Obama visit

By AMIR SHAH and CHRIS BLAKE The Associated Press KABUL, Afghanistan The Taliban struck back less than two hours after President Barack Obama left Afghanistan today, targeting a foreigners housing compound with a suicide car bomb and militants disguised as women in an assault that killed at least seven people. It was the second major assault in Kabul in less than three weeks and highlighted the Talibans continued ability to strike in the heavily guarded capital even when security had been tightened for Obamas visit and todays anniversary of the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in neighboring Pakistan. Obama arrived at Bagram Air Field late Tuesday, then traveled to Kabul by helicopter for a meeting with President Hamid Karzai in which they signed an agreement governing the U.S. presence after combat troops withdraw in 2014. He then gave a speech broadcast to Americans back home, before ending his lightning visit just before 4:30 a.m. The U.S. president, who is in the midst of a re-election campaign, touted the Navy SEAL raid that killed bin Laden a year ago today, noting that the operation was launched from a base in Afghanistan. He also said that the tide has turned over the last three years.

Herman H. Beckman Dorothy L. April 2, 1925-April 30, 2012 Altenburger

Herman H. Beckman, 87, of Delphos, died at 2 p.m. Monday at Van Wert County Hospital. He was born April 2, 1925, in Van Wert County to Joseph and Cecelia (Brockhaus) Beckman, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 11, 1952, he married Alma E. Gasser, who survives in Delphos. Survivors also include daughters Marge (Ken) Wolski of Cincinnati, Jeanette (Al) Baaske of Convoy, Donna (Brian) Blake of Grand Forks, N.D., and Helen (Paul) Dixon of Van Wert; sisters Doris (Leon) Sager of Glandorf and Alice Schroeder of Leipsic; brother Ben (Mary Lou) Beckman of Delphos; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Sister Mary Janet. Mr. Beckman was a farmer who lived and worked on the family farm his entire life. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 1362, Delphos. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Melvin Verhoff officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, where a parish wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

Jan. 26, 1918-April 30, 2012 Dorothy L. Altenburger, 94, of Ottoville died at 8:34 a.m. Monday at Vancrest Healthcare Center of Delphos. She was born Jan. 26, 1918, in Ottoville to Joseph and Theresia (Becker) Schlagbaum. On Feb. 16, 1946, she married Hubert S. Hups Altenburger, who died March 25, 2006. Survivors include three sons, Jack (Barb) Altenburger of Toledo, Randy (Judy) Altenburger of Ottoville and Dennis (Debra) Altenburger of Delphos; eight grandchildren, Brian (Wendy) Altenburger, Julie (Ben) Kolly, Jill (Brian) Wenzlick, Renee (Aaron) Burgei, Beth (Greg) Morscher, Jason Altenburger, Jena (Adam) Rostorfer and Jonathon Altenburger; nine great-grandchildren, Emma and Hannah Wenzlick, Andrew, Marissa and Tyler Kolly, Kara and Courtney Burgei, Evan Altenburger and Joshua Morscher; and two sisters, Phyllis Krouse and Jo Ann Schlagbaum of Lima. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Bernie (Charles) Heathman, Loretta (Kenneth) Roth, Tillie (Ralph) Spieles and Marie (Virgil) Kohlrieser; three brothers, Vince (Coletta) Schlagbaum, Tony (Gertie) Schlagbaum and Ott (Norma) Schlagbaum; and brother-in-law, Bob Krouse. Mrs. Altenburger retired as a waitress from Jims Restaurant in Delphos. She was a member Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and was a member of its Rosary Altar Society. She was a member of the Ottoville VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid golfer and was a member of the Delphos Country Club. She enjoyed playing cards. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed watching it grow to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, the Rev. John Stites officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Hunters bag nearly 8,900 wild turkeys first week

From the ODNR division of Wildlife COLUMBUS Ohio hunters harvested a preliminary total of 8,898 bearded wild turkeys during the first week of the spring turkey-hunting season, which is open statewide through May 20, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. Last year hunters checked 7,744 wild turkeys during the first week of the season. Top counties for wild turkeys killed last week were: Ashtabula-315, Guernsey-276, Tuscarawas-269, C o s h o c t o n - 2 6 6 , Muskingum-265, Belmont-262, Meigs-223, Knox-221, Harrison-220 and Adams-213. The Division of Wildlife estimates that more than 70,000 people will hunt turkeys during the four-week season. Legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until noon from April 23 to May 6. Hunting hours from May 7-20 will be a half hour before sunrise to sunset. Ohios wild turkey population was estimated at 180,000 prior to the start of the spring season. A special youth-only hunt for hunters age 17 and younger was held statewide on April 21-22. Young hunters killed an additional 1,632 birds statewide. Only bearded wild turkeys

The Society and its museum project were initially presented to the City of Oregon in December 2010. The founders represent a group of individuals who have been working on many projects in the Greater Toledo area. The Harbor View Historical Society also receives volunteer aid from the United States Navy located in Toledo. The project, on a three-to-five year plan as submitted to City of Oregon officials, is at the end of the first year. Those interested in helping out should contact Bonifas at 419-236-6924.

Spin Meter: Romney used fees to close budget gap

By ANDREW MIGA Associated Press Michael Widmer, president of the nonpartisan Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, a business-backed fiscal watchdog group. Romneys handling of the fiscal crisis when he took over as governor in 2003 is a guide to how he might act on his promises for lower taxes and reduce the federal deficit if hes elected president. He has sketched a broad, fiscally conservative vision during the primaries but has yet to specify how he would pay for it. Romney says the increased fees during his governorship cant be considered tax increases because they were charges for specific services. He never favored, never advocated for and never signed a tax increase into law, said Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul. In remarks last June, Romney recalled how he tackled the budget gap: The expectation was that wed have to raise taxes. But I refused. I ordered, instead, a complete review of all state spending, made tough choices and balanced the budget without raising taxes.

Baldauf, who represents the Delphos, Ottoville and Kalida area, is one of nearly 2,500 YFU volunteers nationwide. The Jefferson boys track team easily won a triangular meet with Lima Perry and New Knoxville Thursday setting their record at 6-1. Jefferson took first place in shot put (Tony Closson), long jump (Andy Mox), high jump (Damon Ulm), 3200-meter relay (Mark Hulihan, Kevin Grothaus, Scott Bonifas and Tony Teman), 100-meter dash (Closson), and 200-meter dash (Closson). Delphos post office superintendent of postal operations Earl Lause, retired today after 33 1/2 years with the postal service. Lause began working with the postal service Dec. 1, 1953. He worked four years as a letter carrier, 16 1/2 as a clerk and 13 as a supervisor. 50 Years Ago 1962 Hail, wind and rain ripped through Delphos and nearly all of Ohio on Monday afternoon causing personal injuries and heavy property damage. Trees in many sections of Delphos were uprooted and windows in several business establishments, including the Marathon Service Station and the E. E. Sheeter garage, were broken. Signs were blown down at NuMaudes Restaurant and Bobs Grocery. The Delphos Lions Club elected officers for the coming year at the meeting of the organization at NuMaudes Tuesday night. Rod Tiernan was elected to head the organization. A proclamation from Gov. Michael V. DiSalle was read which names Friday as Ohio Lions Candy Day. The candy sale is a statewide fund raising program to continue the work being done in the field of sight conservation, assistance to the blind, rehabilitation, local blind assistance and community civic projects. Fort Amanda Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, met recently at the home of Mrs. Paul Strayer. Thomas Mosier, son of Mrs. Arthur Mosier, gave the history of the famous Logan Elm, located near Circleville. Logan was the English name of the Mingo Chief, whose family was massacred by the whites in 1774. The treaty was signed under the Logan Elm. 75 Years Ago 1937 The Delphos Jefferson baseball team dropped another Western High School League game when they lost to Lima South last Friday afternoon. Jefferson was on the short end of a 9 to 2 count when the game ended at the Delphos athletic field. Adams started on the mound for Jefferson. He lasted for almost three innings and was replaced by Erickson who finished the game. Word has been received here that a former Delphos resident will broadcast on the National Band Dance program from the Eighth Street Theatre in Chicago on May 8. Mrs. Herbert Hummer, now of Kokomo, Indiana, formerly a Delphos resident, is a member of the Kokomo Kitchen band which will be the guest feature on the program. Approximately 150 members of the Order of Eastern Star were present at the annual inspection of the Delphos chapter conducted Friday evening. A program of special music was offered during the reception held at the Presbyterian Church by Elizabeth Horine, Mary Copus and Eloise Bell.

WASHINGTON (AP) U.S. manufacturing grew last month at the fastest pace in 10 months, suggesting that the economy is healthier than recent data had indicated. New orders, production and a measure of hiring all rose. The April survey from the Institute for Supply Management was a hopeful sign ahead of Fridays monthly jobs report and helped the Dow Jones industrial average end the day at its highest level in more than four years. The trade group of purchasing managers said Tuesday that its index of manufacturing activity reached 54.8 in April, the highest since June. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. The sharp increase surprised analysts, who had predicted a decline after several regional reports showed manufacturing growth weakened last month. The gain led investors to shift money out of bonds and into stocks. The Dow Jones industrial added 66 points to 13,279, its best close since Dec. 28, 2007. Broader indexes also surged. The ISM manufacturing index is closely watched in part because its the first major economic report for each month. Aprils big gain followed a series of weaker reports in recent weeks that showed hiring slowed, applications for unemployment benefits rose and factory output dropped. Eichers help Jacob and Emma butcher beef

BY LOVINA EICHER Today is the last day of April. It is difficult to believe that 2012 is now onethird over with. It is a rainy Monday here so laundry will be put off until tomorrow. We will be taking care of my friend Amys children, Matthew, 1 1/2, and Emily, 6 months, tomorrow afternoon. Verena and Loretta both have time off from school as a reward for doing well on their state tests. They chose to take tomorrow off as they enjoy when Matthew and Emily are here. We used to have Matthew here a lot when he was a baby. It is hard to believe how he has grown. We made rhubarb juice from 16 pounds of rhubarb last week. It made 27 quarts of juice. We are enjoying it but it is going fast. I hope my rhubarb keeps doing well so I can make a lot more. I put in three 3 ounce boxes of strawberry gelatin instead of one and it makes a lot nicer color and flavor. We like to drink it just like it is without adding anything. I also made several rhubarbcustard pies. Saturday we spent the day helping Jacob and Emma butcher a beef. The beef had already been dressed by a local processor so it wasnt quite as messy of a job as usual. It just had to be cut up. Steaks were cut up and the hamburger was ground. Beef chunks and some hamburger were processed in the pressure cookers. Steaks and hamburger were packaged for the freezer. They were really glad for the meat since they didnt get any beef butchered this past winter. The saying many hands make lighter work proved to be true. It was a cool day so it worked out well to cut up the meat since it is hard work. Emma told us all to come for breakfast so we could get an earlier start. On her menu were biscuits, sausage gravy, eggs, fried potatoes, sliced cheese, sliced tomatoes, hot peppers, homemade bread, butter, rhubarb jam, rhubarb juice, chocolate milk, coffee and rhubarb-custard pie. Daughter Elizabeth baked 5 loaves of bread on Friday which came in handy over the weekend. Yesterday we had Jacob and Emmas families here for dinner. Joe fired the grill up and made barbecued steaks, pork chops and hot wings. Along with the meat we had mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, mixed vegetables, corn, macaroni salad, sliced cheese, hot peppers, carrot and celery sticks, and vegetable dip, homemade bread, butter, grape jam, cake and chocolate chip pudding, rhubarb pie and ice cream. Jacob and Emmas good horse, Big Rose, died over the weekend which was a real loss for them. She was a big, strong horse and very traffic safe. Emma and Jacob already had a horse named Rose when they bought Big Rose at auction several years ago. They asked the person selling the horse what its name was and he said Rose. So they renamed their existing horse Little Rose and the new one Big Rose. But theyd both come when calling for Rose. A traffic-safe horse is worth a lot especially when you go to town with the buggy. When I go into town I like a horse that does not get impatient waiting at stop lights. We have brakes on our buggies which helps stop the horse when they want to back up. Sometimes a line of cars is waiting behind you so the brakes are nice. Our horse, Diamond, will be 18 next month and is a little slow but safe and sound. I trust him when I am in town and also when I am passing big farm equipment.

This is one of Joes favorites. He likes it in his lunch. I made some extra so he has it in his lunch this week. Macaroni Salad 3 cups cooked macaroni 1/2 cup carrots 1 /2 cup celery 1 /2 cup onion 2 tablespoons mustard 1 cup Miracle Whip 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 /2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons milk salt and pepper to suit taste Mix the macaroni, carrots, celery and onions in a big bowl until evenly combined. In a separate bowl, mix mustard, Miracle Whip vinegar, salt, sugar, milk, and seasonings. Combine with macaroni mixture and toss until thoroughly mixed. Chill and serve.

Beckham helps White Sox beat Indians 7-2

The Associated Press CHICAGO Gordon Beckham has been waiting for his breakout offensive game. The White Sox second baseman went 3-for-4 and also hit his first homer of the season and had two RBIs to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 7-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday. Beckhams breakthrough came on a murky night that began with a lengthy rain delay and played under occasional light fog at U.S. Cellular Field. (Beckham) swung well; its part of believing in yourself and keep working at it, Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. He hasnt gone down that path of not believing in himself. Hes just looked better the last few times hes gone to the plate. ... Now you build off that. Left-handed starter Chris Sale (3-1) also had a solid night. He worked six innings, gave up one earned run, walked one and struck out three before left-handed reliever Will Ohman entered in the seventh. Sale was pleased with the offensive support. The way they swung the bats tonight was fun to watch, he said. The funnest part of tonight was watching him (Beckham) completely go off. Now hitting .190, Beckham was mired in 0-for-10 slide and was batting just .153 before he belted a solo homer in the third to give Chicago a 2-1 lead. He also singled in a run in the fifth. A.J. Pierzynski also had a solo homer for Chicago. Shelley Duncan connected for Cleveland, snapping the teams 11-game homerless streak. Steady rain postponed the start 56 minutes but storms had passed through by early evening and the game started under cloudy but dry conditions. Beckham sparked a 4-run third inning with his leadoff drive on a 3-1 pitch from Ubaldo Jimenez. Paul Konerko made it 3-1 with a bases-loaded walk, Alex Rios drove in a run with a fielders choice and Dayan Viciedo had an RBI infield single We just didnt play good defense, period, Indians manager Manny Acta said. Outfielder Johnny Damon joined the Indians in Chicago on Tuesday and is likely to be in todays lineup. The plan was for him to spend a day with his teammates here, take batting practice and then start the game tomorrow, Acta explained. The Indians announced they had purchased Damons contract on Tuesday and made roster room by designating infielder Jose Lopez for assignment. Now in his 18th majorleague season, Damon has 2,723 hits and a .286 career batting average. He is ranked third among active players in runs scored (1,643). The 38-year-old Damon, who signed with the Indians last month, has spent the past few weeks at the clubs facility in Goodyear, Ariz.

Devils erupt in 4-1 win over Flyers, tie series

By DAN GELSTON The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA No Ilya Kovalchuk, no problem for New Jersey. With the injured Devils forward out for Game 2, Adam Larsson traded his seat in the rafters for an up-close look at postseason play. He might get to stick around. Larsson scored the first playoff goal of his career off a wrist shot in the third, igniting a 4-goal outburst in the period that rallied the Devils to a 4-1 win over Philadelphia on Tuesday night and tied the best-of-7 series at 1-1. Im not a goal scorer, so I was happy for that, he said. I was happy for that and I think you can see that we get everybody going after that. We score two, three, four there, so it was very important. Oh yeah, it was important. Larsson and Clarkson scored consecutive goals in the third period to rally the Devils past the Flyers and make up for the absence of Kovalchuk. The Devils played without their leading scorer from the regular season because of a lower body injury. Travis Zajac added a late goal to make it 3-1 and Bryce Salvador scored a late emptynetter for the Devils. Game 3 is Thursday in New Jersey. Matt Read scored 2:53 into the game to give the Flyers hope they could jump to a commanding series lead. Instead, the offense went into a funk and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov couldnt protect the advantage. Even without Kovalchuk, the Devils did what they wanted against Bryzgalov, taking close shots and dominating the play in the Flyers zone. They just couldnt score until the third. Bryzgalov, who signed a $51 million, 9-year deal last summer, was especially stout in the second when he bailed out the Flyers offense with a 12-save period. The Flyers went more than 18 minutes in the period before taking a shot on Martin Brodeur. I didnt sense frustration. We were comfortable with how we played the first two periods, Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. And it was just a matter of keeping it going in the third. And the goals came. Bryzgalov had a brutal first five games of the postseason and allowed 20 goals against Pittsburgh. But he shut down the Penguins in the Game 6 clincher a 5-1 win and allowed three goals in the Game 1 victory against the Devils. He appeared to have turned the corner. Then came the final period. Kovalchuks injury opened a roster spot for Larsson, a rookie defenseman, to be activated. Larsson was a firstround pick last year and is just 19 years old. He had two goals and 18 points in his first NHL season but had not played a playoff game. Larssons shot from the circle beat Bryzgalov on his glove side early in the third for the tying goal. Clarkson then crashed the net to knock in the puck and fly gut-first into the crossbar. He lay on top of the net briefly as his teammates mobbed him. Bryzgalov slammed his stick in frustration after the goal. Zajacs fifth goal of the postseason on a backhander made it 3-1 and gave the Devils the insurance goal they needed. Bryzgalov shook his head and remained motionless on his knees for at least a minute after Zajacs goal. He was still down on one knee for the faceoff before he finally stood up and got his head back into the game. He clearly wasnt happy about the goals. Lilly efficient in Dodgers 7-6 win over Rockies

By ARNIE STAPLETON The Associated Press DENVER As usual, the Los Angeles Dodgers got power and production up the middle. For once, centerfielder Matt Kemp wasnt the one doing the heavy lifting. Catcher A.J. Ellis homered and drove in three runs, shortstop Dee Gordon hit his first major-league home run and second baseman Mark Ellis had four singles and made the game-saving play in the ninth inning to preserve a 7-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Their contributions helped Ted Lilly (3-0) pick up the win despite a shaky performance by the Dodgers bullpen. Lilly pitched six solid innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, but he left after throwing just 79 pitches because of a stiff lat muscle. We just didnt want to push it too far, said manager Don Mattingly, who watched his bullpen fritter away almost all of the 7-2 lead Lilly left his relievers. Javy Guerra struck out Carlos Gonzalez with the potential tying run 90 feet away to end it. The Dodgers pounded out 11 hits off Rockies righthander Jhoulys Chacin and then held on. The win capped a big day for the storied franchise, marking the end to the tumultuous Frank McCourt era. The $2 billion sale of the team to Guggenheim Baseball Management, a group that includes former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson, was finalized Tuesday, just hours before the Dodgers improved to an NL-best 17-7. I think the fans of L.A. are pretty excited about the new ownership and what its bringing. As long as L.A. is happy, Im happy, Kemp said. The Dodgers were even happier after this latest display of pinpoint pitching from Lilly and power at the plate that has propelled them to their best start since 1983. Even with a 7-0 lead after five innings, they werent exactly comfortable at Coors Field, however. Every inning wed come in and say we need more runs, we need more runs, Ellis said. Nothing against our pitchers. Thats just the way this is. And then that wind starts blowing a little bit and you know we need to score some more runs. And we held on. Thanks in large part to the second basemans play that robbed Marco Scutaro of a tying single up the middle with one out in the ninth and Wilin Rosario on second base. Ellis was shading toward the bag while jockeying with Rosario before the pitch and then the thick grass slowed the ball down enough for him to make the play to throw out Scutaro and keep Rosario at third. After falling behind Gonzalez 2-0, Guerra threw a backdoor slider and two cutters to strike him out. The dramatic ending was a fitting bookend for the Dodgers. Ovechkin playing less and less but Capitals win ARLINGTON, Va. Alex Ovechkins ice time keeps shrinking in the playoffs, all the way down to a career-low 13 1/2 minutes in Game 2 of the Washington Capitals Eastern Conference semifinal against the New York Rangers. Seems to be working so far. With the teams tied at a game apiece and shifting to Washington for Game 3 today, followed by Game 4 on Saturday, a major topic of conversation is how little 2-time NHL MVP Ovechkin is playing. Despite the reduced action, Washingtons captain and leading scorer did manage to net the winning goal on a power play in Game 2. No one on the Capitals has scored more goals this postseason than Ovechkins three. And he leads the team with six points, too. But coach Dale Hunter is hiding Ovechkin on the bench for long stretches at a time, especially when the Capitals are trying to protect a lead. During the regular season, the player known as Alex the Great topped Washingtons forwards by averaging 19 minutes, 48 seconds of total ice time, 16:08 of evenstrength ice time. In the playoffs, Ovechkin ranks only third and his numbers are down to 19:08 and 15:23. In Monday nights 3-2 victory at New York, Ovechkins 10:36 of even-strength time ranked only eighth among Washingtons 12 forwards and was nearly 6 full minutes less than Jay Beagle, for example. Whether Ovechkins diminished role is a result of an inability or unwillingness to play the sort of safe, possession-focused, defensive-minded hockey that Hunter seeks or a result of something else its tough to argue with the results. Now, they either have something to rally around with forwards Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn suspended for Game 3 TOnight or wind up with yet another excuse in this series. The Predators announced the suspensions Tuesday morning and GM David Poile and coach Barry Trotz said the decision to punish the forwards for violating unspecified team rules was easy. The general manager is leaving the decision on whether the men return for Game 4 on Friday night up to Trotz. Jeff Carter realizes how smooth the Los Angeles Kings 6-1 run through the postseason must look from the outside. The power forward knows most people dont realize how the Western Conferences eighth seeds had to grind, scratch and scrape just to get a chance to look so good. The Wests lowest seeds are in a commanding position after winning twice in St. Louis with gritty road efforts that left the hard-nosed Blues criticizing their own work ethic and defense. For a franchise with no Stanley Cup championships and just one playoff series victory in the previous 18 years, the Kings are adapting splendidly to the high stakes and physical style of the NHL postseason. After blowing out top-seeded Vancouver in the opening round, theyve largely dominated the Wests top two teams.

76ers pull away in 3rd, beat Bulls 109-92

Holiday didnt hit all his shots. It just seemed like it. Holiday scored 26 points, Lou Williams added 20 and the Philadelphia 76ers beat Chicago 109-92 on Tuesday night to even their first-round series at 1-1 in the Bulls first game since Derrick Roses season-ending knee injury. The superstar point guard received a standing ovation and waved to the crowd as he limped onto the court to present the game ball, then watched from a suite as the 76ers blitzed the Bulls in the third quarter. I cant tell you how exciting it is to come into Chicago and get a playoff win here on the road for our team, coach Doug Collins said. It was a great, great night. The Sixers outscored Chicago 36-14 in the period, turning an 8-point deficit into an 83-69 lead against the leagues top-seeded team. Game 3 is Friday in Philadelphia. This game we caught fire and it was pretty hard to put it out, Holiday said. All the Bulls could do was shake their heads and vow to do better. Disappointed, Chicagos Joakim Noah said. Disappointing effort overall. We didnt play well defensively. We didnt play well offensively. Holiday was 11-of-15 from the field and the Sixers shot 59 percent overall. Williams came up big, going 8-of-13 after hitting just 1-of-6 shots in the opener, and Chicago product Evan Turner chipped in with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Noah led the Bulls with 21 points and eight rebounds. John Lucas III scored 15 points but Carlos Boozer scored just nine and Luol Deng finished with eight. More alarming, the Bulls simply couldnt stop the Sixers, particularly in the third quarter. The Sixers were leading 68-61 midway through the quarter after a 12-0 run that Elton Brand started with a foul-line jumper. Then, after a basket by C.J. Watson, Andre Iguodala threw down a thunderous 1-handed dunk over Deng for a 3-point play that drew plenty of oohs, aahs and groans from a crowd that could feel the game slipping away. Things didnt get much better for Chicago after that. The 76ers continued to pour it on, with Iguodala delivering another vicious dunk late in the quarter and then hitting Williams with an alley-oop pass that made it 83-69 heading into the fourth. It added up to a rough night for the Bulls, who were in a familiar spot with Rose sidelined again this time after tearing the ACL in his left knee late in Game 1. He missed 27 games during the regular season because of a variety of ailments and the Bulls did just fine, going 18-9. Reactions to his self-inflicted wound ranged from disbelief to criticism. The Knicks played well without Stoudemire down the stretch by moving Carmelo Anthony to power forward, where he could take advantage of slower opponents. But asking him to carry so much of the offensive load on his own is probably too much to ask against the Heat, who are 5-0 against the Knicks this season. Stoudemire was an instant favorite when he decided to sign in New York in July 2010. Though the Knicks had been hoping to get some combination of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who all signed in Miami, Stoudemire confidently proclaimed that the Knicks were back. He backed up his boast, leading them to their first playoff appearance since 2004. But he pulled a muscle in his back before Game 2 against Boston and wasnt the same the rest of the series as the Knicks were swept. He was never right this season. In part because he wanted to strengthen the back and partly because he wasnt able to get on the court during the lockout, Stoudemire started the season 15 pounds above his usual playing weight of 245. It was clear his explosiveness was gone and he wasnt picked for the All-Star game in his hometown of Orlando. But the Knicks needed whatever they could get from him in this series, especially with their previous injuries, plus Chandler battling the flu and Baron Davis a balky back. By the time the news about Stoudemire broke after the game, many Heat players were already dressed and gone apparently unaware of both the injury and its severity. The Heat had a day off on Tuesday, with no players or coaches available for comment. Stoudemire questioned why he ranked below Bosh on most free agent lists in 2010, noting that he had been on winning teams in Phoenix and Bosh rarely had in Toronto. Yet part of the Knicks problems against the Heat has been the power forward matchup. Bosh has averaged 18.5 points on 50 percent shooting while helping Miami go 7-1 against New York, counting playoffs, according to STATS, LLC. AP source: Knicks Chandler wins defensive award NEW YORK Chandler has been voted the NBAs Defensive Player of the Year for his impact on the Knicks, a person with knowledge of the award revealed Tuesday. The Knicks went from tied for 27th in the NBA in opponent points per game last season to 11th in their first season with Chandler at center. They trimmed 11 points off the 105.7 they yielded in 2010-11. Chandlers victory was first reported by Yahoo Sports. The person told The Associated Press of the honor on condition of anonymity because the official announcement was to come from the NBA. The award will be announced today. Chandler helped Dallas win its first NBA title last season but the Mavericks made no attempt to re-sign him so they could retain salary flexibility for this summer. So Chandler quickly became the top big man on the market and the Knicks, long one of the leagues worst defensive clubs, emerged as a surprising suitor. They even waived point guard Chauncey Billups using the amnesty clause so they could fit Chandler under the salary cap. He was worth it, particularly after the Knicks became a more defensiveminded team following coach Mike DAntonis resignation in March. The Knicks went on to finish seventh in the Eastern Conference and trail Miami 2-0 in their first-round playoff series. Chandler averaged 9.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots. He also had one of his best offensive seasons, averaging 11.3 points and shooting an NBA-high 67.9 percent from the field. Chandler becomes the first Knicks player to win the award and ends the 3-year winning streak of Orlandos Dwight Howard. Spurs Popovich is the NBA Coach of the Year SAN ANTONIO Gregg Popovich cant win like the old days. No longer can the San Antonio Spurs simply feed Tim Duncan the ball, let their defense do the rest and ride that game plan to NBA championships. But the new way Popovich has them winning isnt bad, either. That acknowledgment came Tuesday when Popovich was honored as the NBAs Coach of the Year after leading San Antonio to 50 wins and the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. The Spurs defied naysayers who have written them off as too old since their last title in 2007 and did so in a lockout-shortened season that tested every coach when it came to managing minutes and finding practice time. If you can draft David Robinson and follow that up with Tim Duncan, thats a couple of decades of very, very possible success unless you just screw it up, Popovich said. So its hard to take credit when circumstances have gone your way so consistently. Popovich also won the award in 2003 when San Antonio won its second of four championships and he might be headed for a fifth ring if the Spurs keep this up. Stoudemire had a small muscle in his left hand repaired Tuesday and will not play for the New York Knicks in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series against the Miami Heat on Thursday. Stoudemire met with a hand specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, a day after he was badly cut when he punched the case surrounding a fire extinguisher after the Knicks 104-94 loss in Miami. The Knicks are listing Stoudemire as doubtful for Game 4 on Sunday. Stoudemire apologized on his Twitter account for the act, which leaves the Knicks without another key player as they try to rally from a 2-0 deficit. Theyve had a great season, Thibodeau said. The way he runs an organization, you cant say enough about him. The thing I really admire about him is I had an opportunity to meet him 20 years ago and hes the same guy today that he was then. All the success, the championships, he has not changed one bit. The Spurs practiced Tuesday before the NBA made the afternoon announcement. All-Star Tony Parker, who might be having the most complete season of his career, later tweeted congratulations to the only NBA coach hes ever known. Not that Popovich, one of the NBAs most famously mercurial and colorful coaches for 16 seasons, is likely to be found on social media. The season loomed as one of Popovichs toughest projects yet. Besides Duncan, 36, and Manu Ginobili, 34, growing another year older, the Spurs started the year with much of the same roster that fell in the first round to the up-and-coming Grizzlies last spring. But Popovich, who is also team president, looked in unlikely places to keep San Antonios championship window from shutting. Although he typically keeps rookies on a short leash, Popovich put forward Kawhi Leonard in the starting lineup by midseason and has kept him there for the playoffs. Swingman Danny Green, who the Spurs have previously cut multiple times, found his way into the starting lineup and emerged as a surprise offensive spark. Popovich also steered the Spurs through what has typically been a death knell for them in recent years: injuries to their Big Three. Ginobili missed nearly half the season after breaking his hand, yet San Antonio still kept winning without their playmaking guard. Popovich was aggressive as ever in keeping his stars healthy. He willingly surrendered 11-game winning streaks twice by playing without Duncan, Parker and Ginobili to avoid wear and tear. When he didnt play them in Portland, a disgruntled fan chided Popovich in a letter for denying his family the chance to see three of the NBAs biggest stars in person. Popovich wrote the fan back. He understood but I have a different priority, a different responsibility. That rules for me. Duncan has said that kind of decision-making has made this Popovichs best coaching season yet. Popovich has a record of 847-399 since 1996, making him the leagues longest tenured coach with the same team. He is one of five coaches with four or more NBA championships, joining Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, John Kundla and Red Auerbach, whom the Coach of the Year award is named after. A case also couldve been made for Thibodeau to repeat as winner. The Bulls tied the Spurs with an NBA-best 50 wins even with reigning MVP Rose hampered by injuries all season. Jazz ready to give Parker a hard foul or two SAN ANTONIO The NBA playoffs are not even a week old and already there have been last-second thrillers in Oklahoma City, an AllStar suspended for bumping a ref, a stunning comeback in Memphis and Stoudemire smashing a glass case with his fist. Then theres the Spurs and Utah Jazz. Down 0-1, the Jazz dont want playoff craziness or drama. They just need a win. The Jazz are mapping a more physical game plan for Parker after the Spurs point guard shredded them for 28 points in Game 1. Jazz point guard Devin Harris said his counterpart will likely be in for a hard foul or two after Parker slashed into Utahs big and bruising frontcourt without hesitation. It wasnt tough talk from Harris, who had complimented Parker in the same breath. Jazz center Al Jefferson said the goal was not to hurt him or nothing like that but rather to dissuade Parker from barreling into the paint and punishing Utah with either an acrobatic layup or kicking out to a 3-point shooter. The playoffs is physical. We just cant let him feel like he can come down in that paint any time hes ready, Jefferson added. Parker brushed off the warning Tuesday. Hes heard worse. Its not the first time someone has said that, Parker said. My answer is always going to be the same: Im going to keep coming. Coach Tyrone Corbin said Josh Howard will remain in the starting lineup despite going scoreless in 16 minutes in Game 1. Howard returned from knee surgery last week and despite his bumpy return, Corbin is counting on the 9-year veterans playoff experience from his years in Dallas. The Spurs expect to be shorthanded. Backup center Tiago Splitter is doubtful after spraining his left wrist in the series opener, leaving San Antonio even more undersized. Center DeJuan Blair, who had started nearly every game before Boris Diaw took his job last month, will take over Splitters minutes. Protecting a 1-0 lead is a position the Spurs havent been in since 2008. Thats the last time San Antonio took a 2-0 lead, in a first-round series with Phoenix that the Spurs won in five games. Jefferson got two runners on in the bottom of the first against Knight starter Jared Hallfeldt (5 IPs, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 3 BBs, 6 Ks; 96 pitches, 61 strikes): 1-out hits to left by Austin Jettinghoff and Ross Thompson; but to no avail. The Knights scored three runs in the top of the second against senior Curtis Miller (2 innings, 1 hit, 3 runs, 0 earned, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts; 46 pitches, 25 strikes), making his first start of 2012 after a wrestling injury to his shoulder. That is when the weather made its mark, first with lightning and then heavy rain, causing the umps to eventually postpone the game. RPMs hiring of Ford marks start of silly season

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. Nobody thought Mike Ford would be out of work very long when Joe Gibbs Racing dismissed the crew chief in December after a disappointing 2011 season with Denny Hamlin. Because JGR still owed him for the final year on his contract, Ford was in no rush to climb back atop a pit box. And if he had to spend the entire season sitting at home, it wouldnt be the worst thing in the world. But crew chiefs dont sit idle for very long in NASCAR and that was proven once again Monday when Richard Petty Motorsports pulled Ford back into the Sprint Cup garage. After just nine races, the team decided the pairing of Aric Almirola and crew chief Greg Erwin wasnt a fit,and Ford was hired to take over the iconic No. 43 team. Mike Ford is an elite crew chief who knows what it takes to be a winner at this level, team owner Richard Petty said. Were fortunate that he was available and that we could reach a deal to bring him over to our place. Weve taken a lot of big steps at Richard Petty Motorsports in the past year and I think this might be that one piece of the puzzle we were missing. Its only a quarter of the way through the grueling NASCAR schedule and maybe in a different era, slumping teams could still hope for a mid-season turnaround. Nobody has that luxury anymore, so when it becomes evident that something has to change in an effort to save the season, the crew chief is usually the first guy to go. So it was Erwin to get the first hook of the 2012 season and he didnt even make it a year with the Petty organization. He had been let go as Greg Biffles crew chief last July and was snapped up rather quickly at RPM, which paired him with AJ Allmendinger. Everybody seemed happy and then Allmendinger got an big picture and maybe arent taking the chances they once did out of fear of it hurting too much in the standings. Racing has changed because right now, there is so much emphasis put on the almighty point, that we live and die by that one point, Nationwide Series points leader Elliott Sadler said last weekend. Racing is segregated right now between making the Chase and not making the Chase. You cant take as many chances now as you could seven or eight years ago because if you finish 30th or worse, its going to take you three or four races to get back in that Chase contention. It remains to be seen if Ford, who guided Hamlin to 17 victories and a spot in the Chase all six seasons they were paired together, can get Almirola into one of those coveted 12 spots. But RPM felt the team had to go for it and the longer they waited, the harder it would be to make up ground. Its highly doubtful that RPM will be the only organization to make a change over the next few weeks. Every team sitting outside the top 15 right now save for maybe the Hendrick Motorsports crews of Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne have to be taking a good long look at personnel and wondering if new blood is needed. Jamie McMurray, winner of three races in 2010, hasnt done anything since and is 18th in the standings; Jeff Burton, who has publicly said his Richard Childress Racing team needs to get better, is sitting 20th in points behind Mark Martin, who has run only seven of the nine races this year. Regan Smith, who won Darlington last season, cant be pleased hes currently 25th in the standings as he closes

NASCAR penalizes 6 Nationwide Series teams CHARLOTTE, N.C. NASCAR has fined six Nationwide Series teams for failing inspection at Richmond International Raceway. The penalties were levied against the 3-car teams for Richard Childress Racing and Turner Motorsports. NASCAR ruled the front upper bumper covers for all six cars had been illegally modified. Crew chiefs Luke Lambert, Danny Stockman, Trent Owens, Jimmy Elledge, Ernie Cope and Mike Shiplett were all fined $10,000 and placed on probation through Dec. 31. Car chiefs Phil Gould, Robert Strmiska, Shannon Rursch, Ronald Hornaday III, Paul Balmer and Christopher Meyers also were placed on probation through Dec. 31. NASCAR did not dock points from the teams, which included Sadler, third-place Austin Dillon and seventh-place Justin Allgaier. NC bank buys Mayfields home in courthouse sale NEWTON, N.C. The bank that held the mortgage on property owned by former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield has bought the North Carolina home at a courthouse auction. Carolina Farm Credit bid more than $1.7 million for the home and land owned by Mayfield, who was suspended from NASCAR after testing positive for methamphetamine in 2009. The auction was conducted on the Catawba County Courthouse steps Monday. The bank was the only bidder. Mayfield and his wife, Shana, had taken out two mortgages from Carolina Farm Credit in 2006 on the property for more than $3 million. They last made a payment in April 2011. The Mayfields must be out of their home in 10 days. Mayfield was in Caldwell County on Monday on pending drug charges, which were delayed until September.

He injured his left knee when he slipped off a paddle board in the Pacific Ocean the weekend before the season opener in Kapalua, and it wound up keeping him out of golf until the middle of March. Then, he suffered a rib injury at the Masters but played through it the next week at Hilton Head, the only PGA Tour event in his native South Carolina. He is the defending champion at the Wells Fargo Championship. It will be only his sixth tournament this year. I think any time you come somewhere youve had success, it gives you that little bit of confidence even if its been a strange year for you, he said. Strange, indeed. The paddle board incident was a fluke fall and Glover didnt grasp how serious it was. He went to the practice range the next week in Honolulu thinking he might be able to play and walk on a flat golf course. He didnt realize he would be out two months. More peculiar was the rib injury. He said he pulled an intercostal muscle on his left side. If it had been any other week but Augusta, I dont think I would have played, he said. JACK AND THE TREE: One of the famous stories from Pebble Beach is a tree that got in the way of Arnold Palmer trying to win in 1967. One shot behind in the final round, his approach to the par-5 14th hit the tree and went out-of-bounds. Palmer reloaded and the same thing happened. He wound up making a 9. The next day, a fierce storm uprooted the tree. Turns out Jack Nicklaus has his own tree story. Nicklaus was a 21-year-old amateur in the 1961 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills and he was one shot behind playing the par-5 12th as he made a run at Gene Littler. Thats when he ran into an elm tree that wasnt even in the way. Nicklaus said he nailed a 3-wood and it was headed for the green when a gust of wind blew the elm toward the fairway, in the path of the ball, and knocked it down. The Treasury Department in 2006 said KindHearts was connected with the Hamas-affiliated Holy Land Foundation and the al-Qaida-affiliated Global Relief Foundation. You can, of course, reinvest the money under the like-kind exchange rule and thereby postpone paying the taxes. The operative term here is postpone. Munchs The Scream may fetch $80M at NYC auction

NEW YORK (AP) One of the art worlds most recognizable images Edvard Munchs The Scream could sell for $80 million or more when it is auctioned at Sothebys on Wednesday. The 1895 painting of a man holding his head and screaming under a streaked, blood-red sky has become a modern symbol for human anxiety, popularized in movies and plastered on everything from mugs to Halloween masks to T-shirts. It is one of four versions created by the Norwegian expressionist painter. Three are in Norwegian museums; the one at Sothebys is the only one left in private hands. It is being sold by Norwegian businessman Petter Olsen, whose father was a friend and patron of the artist. A price tag of $80 million would be among the highestever for an artwork. The record is $106.5 million for Picassos Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust, sold in 2010 by Christies in New York. Sothebys said its pastelon-board version of The Scream is the most colorful and vibrant of the four and the only version whose frame was hand-painted by the artist to include his poem, detailing the works inspiration. In the poem, Munch described himself shivering with anxiety and said he felt the great scream in nature. Proceeds from the sale will go for the establishment of a new museum, art center and hotel in Hvitsten, Norway, where Olsens father and Munch were neighbors. I have lived with this work all my life, and its power and energy have only increased with time, Olsen said in February. NBC to keep Golden Globes for years, judge rules

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY The Associated Press LOS ANGELES A federal judge ruled Monday that producers of the Golden Globe Awards acted properly when they negotiated a deal keeping the glitzy gala on NBC through 2018. U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matzs 89-page ruling states that the production company, dick clark productions, has a right to negotiate the deal and work on the show as long as it airs on NBC. That right was a key part of a long-running dispute between the company, known as dcp, and the Globes organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The association sued over the broadcast deal in November 2010, but the two sides have worked together on the past two awards shows. The production company has claimed it has a perpetual right to work on the show as long as it airs on NBC, but the association argued that it never agreed to those terms and it was facing the loss of its creation. The Globes have become big business, with Hollywood A-listers appearing each year. The journalists group and producer split the multimilliondollar annual profits evenly. There was no immediate comment from the HFPA. Matz has said he doesnt expect his ruling will end the dispute, but that it will likely lead to an appeal. Matzs ruling states the dcp only has a right to work with NBC, but that it does not need to receive approval for its broadcast deal directly from the HFPA anymore because of a 1993 amendment to their working relationship. We are pleased the court affirmed our contract and look forward to working with the HFPA and NBC to nurture and expand the Golden Globes franchise for years to come, dcp wrote in a statement. The companys CEO, Mark Shapiro, said he wished Dick Clark, who died April 18, had lived to see the ruling. My only sadness is that Dick wasnt here to see the win, Shapiro said. This was the brainchild of Dick Clark. It was his idea to do a long-term deal. The judge stated the unusual agreement came about largely because of HFPAs own leadership problems. HFPA suffered from the absence of sound, business-like practices, Matz wrote. He noted the groups complicated internal politics and frequent elections, some of which triggered bitter feelings. HFPA members have always been dedicated to the success of the Golden Globes Award Show, Matz wrote. But often they succumbed to bouts of pronounced turmoil and personal feuds. The judges ruling came after he heard nine days of testimony earlier this year over the deal negotiated by dcp. Clark sold the last of his interest in the company in 2007, but the dispute focused heavily on events that took place while he still owned it in 1993. The judge had to determine whether a 1993 agreement between the HFPA and dcp gave the production company the right to work

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Former 1960s teen pop idol Bobby Vee says hes been diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. The 69-year-old, born Robert Velline in Fargo, N.D., says on his website that he was diagnosed last year. Vee was catapulted to stardom after the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Big Bopper Richardson in a 1959 plane crash en route to Moorhead, Minn. Vee and his friends filled in for the trio at the Moorhead performance and soon after that he recorded his first single, Suzie Baby, for Soma Records in Minneapolis. The St. Paul Pioneer Press says Vees wife of 48 years, Karen Velline, is also dealing with health issues. Shes on a waiting list for a lung transplant.

Nasal irrigation is effective treatment for sinusitis

DEAR DOCTOR K: Every winter I come down with sinusitis. Is there anything I can do to prevent it? DEAR READER: A lot of people suffer from periodic sinus infections (sinusitis). Im one of them. The symptoms are aggravating: headache, pain or pressure in the face and head, where the sinuses are, and thick mucus clogging the nose. The good news is there are many things you can do to reduce your risk of sinusitis. One of the simplest, cheapest and most effective ways to prevent and treat sinus problems is nasal irrigation. This helps clear excess mucus and keeps your nose moist. Nasal irrigation is done with just tap water and table salt. At least twice a day, follow these steps: (1) Stir 1 teaspoon of salt into 2 cups of lukewarm water. (2) Fill a small bulb syringe with the saltwater solution. (3) Lean over your bathroom sink, insert the tip of the syringe just inside one nostril, and gently squeeze the bulb. Use at least one full bulb of solution. The water will run back out the nostril and into the sink. (4) Repeat the procedure in the other nostril. During the day, use nasal saline spray (available over-the-counter at drugstores) to moisten nasal passages. Here are additional suggestions: -- Drink lots of water. This helps keep mucus thin and loose. -- Inhale steam. Linger in a hot shower. -- Avoid dry environments. A humidifier in your home (in particular, by your bed) and where you work can help prevent nasal passages from drying out. Keep humidifiers clean and free of bacteria and mold.

-- Sleep with your head elevated. Mucus pools in your sinuses at night when your head is down. Prop up your head with pillows or a wedge during sleep. -- Be nice to your nose. Blow your nose gently, one nostril at a time. Forceful blowing can irritate the nasal passages and propel mucus back up into your sinuses. This can make the sinusitis worse. -- Avoid antihistamines unless prescribed. Antihistamines can be effective for nasal allergies that cause lots of sneezing. But they also make mucus thick and hard to drain. Even if your sinusitis is triggered by allergies, avoid antihistamines. Once you have sinusitis, the antihistamines can make it harder to get rid of it. -- Be careful with decongestants. Using decongestant nasal sprays for more than three to four days can cause increased swelling after the medication wears off. That swelling of the nasal passages can make sinusitis worse. With sinusitis, like with most illnesses, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. While on a sailing trip, the boat sank and they were stranded on a deserted island. In time, the butler took over the leadership role because he had the survival skills to keep everyone alive. A: The name of the movie is The Admirable Crichton. Lewis Gilbert directed the 1957 film, based on J.M. Barries 1902 eponymous stage comedy. William Crichton is the butler in the London household of the Earl of Loam and his family in the late-19th century. May Day protests show weak immigration movement

By KATE BRUMBACK and PETER PRENGAMAN Associated Press ATLANTA While a black preacher told 100 immigration protesters that incarcerated blacks and detained immigrants faced similar challenges, Jesse Morgan stood to one side of the May Day demonstrators, holding a large sign that read Radical Queers Resist. Although the rally was geared toward illegal immigrants, the 24-year-old Georgia State sociology major said gays can relate, too, because they often face discrimination. And besides, he said, there are queers who are undocumented. Over the last several years, May Day rallies in the United States have been dominated by activists pushing for a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people in the country illegally. But since 2006, when hundreds of thousands took to the streets in cities across America, the rallies have gotten smaller, less focused and increasingly splintered by any number of groups with a cause. In New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland, Calif., May Day protests were dominated by Occupy Wall Street activists, a sign of how far the immigration has fallen off the radar, unable to compete with the economy. Immigration activists say they are not worried about decreasing numbers at rallies because their focus the last few years has been more on getting eligible immigrants to become U.S. citizens and vote. And yet activists acknowledge the threat to illegal immigrants may be stronger than ever with the U.S. Supreme Court considering Arizonas tough, controversial crackdown. In 2010, Arizona passed a law that, among other things, required police to ask for immigration papers from anyone they stop or arrest and suspect is in the country illegally. Gustavo Madrigal, a 20-year-old illegal immigrant who attended the Atlanta May Day rally, said he keeps attending the rallies because he has always been taught that an American doesnt give up. Proposition 187, passed by California voters in 1994, prohibited illegal immigrants from using social services, including health care and education. The law was eventually thrown out, but it angered many Latinos and helped make California a solidly Democratic state. In 2005, a bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives that would have criminalized anyone who helped illegal immigrants also had a galvanizing effect. For several months in 2006, hundreds of thousands rallied across the country. The U.S. Senate responded, passing a reform bill that would have given a path to citizenship for millions here illegally. As is often the norm with immigration, however, the result was paralysis. As years have turned to decades, immigration activists have had to accept the reality that it could be years or even decades before the issue is dealt with by Congress. President Barack Obamas election win in 2008 represented arguably the best hope in a generation for so-called comprehensive reform: combining better border security and a crackdown on undocumented workers with a way for millions here illegally to come out of the shadows and stay.
