The Zhou Dinasty And Warring States Period For much of the Zhou dynasty, the consultation of oracle bones continued as it had in the Shang Dynasty. The Wu (Shamans) of the Shang dynasty period are also found during Zhou dynasty, but, toward the end of the Dynasty, the Wu, who had been principally members of royal family, lost much of their political power. As a result, they established themselves as HEALERS (a person skilled in a particular type of therapy) and diviners among the ordinary people. THEIR ROLE AMONGST THE NOBILITY WAS, IN PART, TAKEN OVER BY PRIESTS WHO WERE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE HEAVENS TO UNDERSTAND THE FUTURE (VERY DIFFERENT FUNCTION FROM COMMUNICATING WITH ANCESTORS TO DETERMINE IF THEY WERE ANGRY). Grew the notion that uncared for ancestors of people who failed to observe the correct rites could come to roam the land as demons, visiting illness and disaster upon others. Unlike ancestors, demons were not connected to populations by posthumous family ties and obligation, but struck where they wished. From these concerns the practice of demonic medicine was born. Because it was no longer clear if the king had direct contact with the beings of the other world, the Wu took on the role of interpreting the demons desires for the people and of exorcising the demons
and evil winds from the sick, a position with less rank, but ultimately longer lasting.

What is today called the medicine of systematic correspondence emerged, along with the Confucian Moral Code, out of the CAOS of the Warring States. This system of medicine was not designed to appease ancestors or demons, but rather was a rationally based system that managed observed somatic and environmental relationship to bring order to CAOS Today, Chinese medicine includes Warring states ideas, such as: A belief in the Unity of Humankind and Nature; Yin Yang and Five elements theory; and The concept of Qi as the basis of Life.
