Title of Unit: An Age of Exploration Title of Lesson: New Ideas in Europe

Lesson Plan # 2 out of 5

Summary of the Lesson Plan:

This lesson talks about changes in technology during the Renaissance, and the Portuguese discovery of a sea route around Africa to Asia. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin social studies book Teachers Edition (TE) for fifth grade, entitled, United States History, and it consists of pages 90-95.

Target Population:

Grade level: fifth Skill level: at grade level Grouping: whole group, with a partner, and independent work for the study guide worksheet.

Objectives:

H2.5.4 Explain why slavery was introduced into colonial America. H1.5.4 Identify the contributions of Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans to North American beliefs and traditions.
Procedure: 1. The teacher will start by engaging the students she will ask the students: Are there any recent inventions that are important in your life? How do you use them? The students will share their answers with their shoulder partners. 2. She will then introduce the new vocabulary words to the students by writing them on the board, repeating them to the students, and having the students write the words and definitions in their vocabulary journals. The new vocabulary words for the day are: technology the use of scientific knowledge and tools to solve problems; navigation the science of planning and controlling the direction of a ship; astrolabe an instrument once used by sailors for navigation; profit money left over after all expenses have been paid; slavery a system in which people could be bought and sold and were forced to work with no pay. 3. The teacher will then read aloud pages 90 and 91. When she finishes the reading she will ask the students, What was the Renaissance? The students will share their answers with their shoulder partner (the student sitting next to them). Once the partners have agreed on the answer they will write the answer in their journals. 4. The teacher will then call on students to read pages 92 and 93 aloud to the class. After these pages have been read the teacher will ask the students, Why did European countries want to find a sea route to Asia? The students will discuss their answer with their shoulder partner and then write their answer in their journals.

5. Next, the teacher will review this lesson by doing a short minilesson. The students will complete a cause and effect chart what effect new inventions had on trading. The teacher will display a chart that the students will copy into their journals. The chart will be three boxes on top of one another. In the top box students will write the cause, which is new inventions created. In the bottom to boxes they will work as a whole class to determine what effects this had on trading. 6. Lastly, the students will work individually to complete the Vocabulary and Study Guide worksheet.

Assessment:
I will know whether the students understand the concepts from the lesson or not based on the Vocabulary and Study Guide worksheet they complete at the end of the lesson. This activity does address the standard because the students must be familiar with their new vocabulary words and know about the sailors and sea routes discussed in this chapter.

Reflection: What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? The students will need to know how to read, work with a partner, write, and have adequate comprehension skills in order to be successful with this lesson. The teacher will be going around offering help to students who struggle in any of these areas. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? The lesson can be extended by having the students think of their own invention. Students can either work independently or with a partner to come up with an invention they think would be helpful in their classroom. The students will have to describe their invention and write a paragraph about why they think this would be helpful to have in the classroom. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concept, I will work with them in a small group to go into more detail about the Renaissance and why voyagers were searching for new sea routes. We will look at the globe to see where they sailors were going. Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? I dont anticipate having any major problems with this lesson. I will be doing the reading aloud to the whole class to ensure ELL students will have an adequate understanding of the reading. While the students are reading aloud for two pages I will help guide them through the text if they are having any difficulty reading the text.
