1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson was designed for 4th grade students to learn about how maps can show both physical and human features. This lesson uses lesson 10 from Washoe County School Districts social studies unit. http://scottforesman.com/state/nv/washoe/pdfs/g4_less10.pdf

2. Target Population: 4th grade All skill levels whole group discussions and independent work

3. Objectives: G5.4.3 Construct a map of Nevada displaying human and physical features.

4. Procedure: 1. Begin: Show students a map of Nevada and ask them to name some things that are shown on maps. Have them point out that example on the map if it can be found on the map. 2. Write the students answers on the board. Next point to each example and ask students to tell you whether it is a natural feature or one made by humans. 3. Introduce lesson by saying, In this lesson we will learn about how maps can show both physical features and human features. 4. Have the students silently read the passage on the worksheet. Next review example of physical and human features (show pictures if necessary). Then ask: a) How are physical features and human features different? (Physical features show natural objects such as mountains and rivers. Human features are things that are built by humans such as bridges and roads.) b) How might someone use a map that just shows human features? (Possible answer: A tourist might use a map of state landmarks or monuments to visit.) 5. Explain to students that map keys are useful for people who make and also read maps. Explain that the symbols in the map key tell what pictures or objects stand for in the map and that they usually look like the things they represent on the map. 6. Have students come up with symbols that they can use on their maps they will construct (question #2 on worksheet) and write the list on the board. Ask students whether each symbol represents a physical or human feature. 7. Continue with assessment.

5. Assessment: Question #2 on worksheet. Point students to resources that will help them gather information about physical and human features to include on their outline maps of Nevada. Ask them to make a list of the physical features and a list of the human features. Have students compare their maps (done during lesson) and lists with a partner.

6. Reflection:

In order to be successful with this lesson, students must be able to: identify physical and human features. This lesson will be followed up with a lesson about the counties in Nevada. This lesson could also be extended by the following activity; Have students make a list of the human and physical features in their community and then draw a map to show where they are located. Suggest that they take photographs or draw pictures of the features to include on their maps. I will work one on one with students who dont grasp the concepts. I anticipate that some students might have trouble coming up with ideas for features to include in their drawing. I will give them plenty of examples beforehand and work with them throughout the lesson.

7. Materials: Nevadas physical and Human features worksheet (http://scottforesman.com/state/nv/washoe/pdfs/g4_less10.pdf) Paper and pencils Drawing utensils Resources (books, magazines, internet access, pictures, etc. that has information on Nevada features.) Map of Nevada
