Miss Rumphius

By Barbara Cooney Grade Level: 2nd Grade Summary As a young girl Miss Rumphius looked up to her grandfather who was an artist. He worked in a shop at the bottom of his house, and Miss Rumphius would help when he was very busy. Miss Rumphius would listen to her grandfather tell stories about all the faraway places he went to. She wanted to be just like her grandfather and travel

faraway places too, and live by the sea when she gets old. Her grandfather emphasized the most important thing to do in ones life, and that was to do something to make the world more beautiful. Miss Rumphius traveled to a few faraway places, lived by the sea, and did something to make the world beautiful. As she grew old she shared all her stories to her niece and her nieces friends. Her niece wants to go to faraway places, live by the sea, and someday do something to make the world more beautiful. Comprehensive Reflection
Creating this integrated unit was very time consuming, but extremely helpful. I have gained so much experience and knowledge on how to create a lesson plan integrating multiple subjects. I now understand how to connect the standards to the themes of my lesson plan. It was very hard to create the seven day calendar as I had to move a lot of my days around in order for the unit to be affective. It was difficult at first to integrate multiple subjects to a social studies lesson plan, but with more experience and practice it became easier and almost natural to incorporate another subject within my lesson. I had fun coming up with activities for my students to complete. It was also difficult to surround my lesson on one main theme at first, but as I continued my calendar activities it seemed to all work out and come together perfectly. My service learning project is a great idea for my lesson plan theme and I would like to use this actual idea in the future in my own classroom. It was very easy to tie in a childrens literature book into my unit. The book is what actually helped me complete my unit and give me a theme! I never realized how much a book could be used to help teach about social studies or any other subject for that matter. The three part integrated social studies unit

Catherine Bethell Dr. Kolar EDEL 453 March 26, 2012

was very well organized and a great way to help a future teacher prepare to create lesson plans that incorporate multiple subjects. I really liked the lesson plan template given for this assignment, and I will most likely use it again! Coming up with activities for seven days was actually kind of hard and I had to keep in mind that this unit is for the second grade level. I am glad that I was given this opportunity to gain experiences, skills, and knowledge on how to create an effective unit plan using the Childrens book I chose!
