Professionalism - An occupation that regulates itself through systematic, required training and collegal discipline that has a base

in technical specialized knowledge and that has a service rather than a profit orientation - An occupation whose core element is work based upon the mastery . - Members are governed upon code and profess commitment to competence, integrity, morality, altruism, and promotion of public good within their domain. This commitments form the basis of a social contract between a profession and a society - Which in return grants the profession a monopoly over use of its knowledge base, the right to considerable autonomy, in practice and privilege of selfregulation. Professions and their members are accountable to those served, to the profession, and to the society Core elements - Vocation (based on complex body of knowledge) - Autonomy - Service orientation Medicine as a social contract with society - Rights and duty of state and its citizens are reciprocal, and the recognition of this reciprocity constitute a relationship - bargain reciprocal nature Negotiation Not a legal document Oath of hippocrates: - I will maintain utmost respect for every human life - Whatever I may see or hear in the lives of my patients which ought not be spoken abroad. I will not divulge reckoning that all such should be kept secret - I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine - I consider for the benefit of my patient and abstain from whatever is harmful or mischievous - To reckon all who have taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of the art of medicine to others Principles & Values (Pillars in professionalism) 1.
