28th National Youth Games

Young athletes from all across Thailand will be in Phuket to compete in
the National Youth Games. 40 sports are to be contested in this event,
which has been dubbed 'Phuket Games 2012'. The games' mascot is a sea
dragon, the image of which people believe looks like Phuket rising out
of the sea and symbolizes the power and strenght of Thailand's youths.
Dubbed the Phuket Games 2012, the event comprises 40 diferent sports

The Douce France is one of the worlds largest sailing catamarans. She has
total fore and aft sail area of 5,692 square feet and has the ability to sail at a
constant 22 knots in a 28 knot breeze and regularly achieves 15 knots in 20
knots of wind. Her twin diesel engines also allow her to silently cruise at up
to 12 knots with a very economical cruise speed of around 10 knots. 'Douce
France' accommodates up to 12 guests in 6 brightly lit and air-conditioned
staterooms. Guests have easy access to the water and tenders with a fold away
stairway. Guests also have a choice of three dining areas and the spacious
cockpit is nicely shaded with the deckhouse overhang. There is also a more
intimate interior lounge and the aft teak deck for dinning and relaxing. Ms
Jill Zwaans, Charter Department of EXMAR Shipmanagement NV based in
Antwerp commissioned Helicam to obtain cutting edge material for their
promotional video as well High Defnition low altitude aerial photography of
the Douce France. Using the remote piloted helicopter equipped with HDV
video and 18 mega pixel stills, Helicam Co Ltd are able to obtain material for a
dynamic promotional video along with fantastic lifestyle imagery.

Rory Byrne
Acclaimed Formula One car designer Rory Byrne
describes how his plans to retire and dive in Thailand
were postponed by a call from Ferrari, which led him to
join one of the most successful teams in the history of
Formula One.
People Profle
Where are you from?
I was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and left for the UK in 1973 where I
spent the next 23 years. Then I was in Maranello, Italy, for seven years,
which is home to the Ferrari F1 racing team. For the past eight years Ive
been spending half my time in Italy and half in Phuket.
When did you frst come to Phuket?
I frst came to Phuket about 1988 with my friend Alex Hawkridge, who
had kindled my interest in scuba diving years before. We joined a two-
week liveaboard trip that took us up the coast and all the way out to
the Andaman Islands. I really enjoyed the trip as well as the hospitality
in Phuket, so I returned several times on holiday. I nearly moved here in
1996 when my contract with the Benetton Formula One team expired.
Having won the championship in the 1994-95 season Id planned
to retire, so I went to Koh Lanta intending to set up a scuba diving
business. But then I got a call and 10 days later I was in Maranello
working with Ferrari.
What were the highlights of your long career as a race-car
designer?
In 1980 I was with Toleman, which was later bought by Benetton,
and we competed in the European F2 championship. Our drivers
fnished frst and second that year. Then 1994 was the frst time that
Michael Schumacher won the Driver's Championship with a car that
I had designed. The great period of Ferrari was from 1999 to 2004,
and what stands out is 2002 when we made a big step forward in car
development; that year we won 15 out of 17 races. In 2004 we again
won 15 races. This was the last car I designed for Ferrari, and one of them
is now here at my home in Phuket.
What kind of car do you drive here?
Up until recently I drove a Honda City. Now I have a Mitsubishi Pajero.
No Ferraris?
No, theres no Ferrari dealership here and the road conditions dont allow
for it. I need the Pajero because I often have several people to transport.
Thats whats important here.
I do own a Ferrari F430 which I use in Italy. When I frst joined Ferrari in
1997 our President said that he would give me a Ferrari if I designed
the car that won the World Championship, so I've had a couple of 360
Modena and I now have the F430.
Do you have family here?
Yes, and this is partly why I ended up living in Phuket. While in the UK in
1996 I was interested in learning Thai so I went around the colleges in
Oxford trying to fnd a Thai teacher. I ended up at a Thai restaurant and a
student working as a waitress there agreed to teach me Thai. Shes now
my wife, Pornthip, better known as Or. My Thai, however, is worse than
it was when we met! We have two sons, aged 4 and 11.
Youve recently built a villa in Phuket can you tell us more about it?
We moved in about 18 months ago. My wife has overseen the design
and construction, and its in contemporary Chinese style with many
antique and classic features including foors in recycled Burmese teak
(Khun Or interjects: People say that since I have an antique husband,
I need an antique house!). We're surrounded by trees and right in the
middle of the canopy in Nai Harn and with design elements including
a double-height roof and water features on both sides, we have no air
conditioning and dont need it at all.
What do you like most about living in Phuket?
Its a great place to live. I enjoy the outdoor lifestyle, being able to walk
to the beach and go surfng. Years ago I had problems with my knee and
was advised to give up running, so I took up golf. I now play about 300
days a year, and six days a week when Im in Phuket, usually at Phunaka.
Theres also a great expat community here.
What do you think the future holds for you?
Im as busy now as when I worked full time. Im still with Ferrari as
a consultant, working about 100 days a year. I also have ongoing
involvement with Discovery Insure in South Africa. It has developed a
novel scheme for motor insurance where if you drive well you get 40%
of your fuel bill. Theres a black box installed in the car that monitors
driving habits. My job is to help develop a way to turn the boxs signals
into a meaningful measure of driving behaviour.
My wife and I are also working on a business plan to start a rejuvenation
centre. After I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 18 months ago I did
a lot of research. I looked at both conventional and alternative therapies,
and for me the alternative methods looked less intrusive. I did a pre-
detox diet followed by 10 days of fasting and detox, and ever since Ive
stayed on a daily diet of 50% raw vegetables and fruit. I believe that
detoxing and adjusting to a healthier diet frees up your body's immune
system to deal with the cancer. Not only has the cancer stabilised,
but some chronic problems I had including a bad knee and an elbow
problem have disappeared. For 20 years I couldnt throw a cricket ball,
but now I can. With the centre, were interested in sharing what weve
learned about diet and health to help other people.
How do you evaluate success?
Thats simple. You just need to ask yourself, Have I achieved my goals in
life? My goal was always to design a car that won a championship. After
the tremendous run at Ferrari I felt Id achieved my goals. Since then my
goals have shifted. Its much more about time with friends and family,
having a healthy lifestyle. With golf, for example, its no longer about
winning but more about enjoying the game.

Welcome to the Phuket Hot List, our bi-monthly series
that brings the islands latest and greatest into sharper
focus. This month, were venturing east to check out
the serene scene on Koh Siray.
Found across a causeway just beyond Phukets fshing port
and main tourist ferry pier in the Rassada municipality, Koh
Siray frst appears a more rough and rugged place than the
soft-sand west-coast beach resort areas, but those who take
the time to explore the small island will fnd picturesque
roads to cruise, fantastic views to enjoy from its hilltops and
beaches, and some truly tasty dining spots.
Hot Eat s
On Pleumsuk Beach is a restaurant of the same name thats well
of the tourist track but where locals in the know go to spend a lazy
afternoon with their family. From the restaurants simple kitchen comes
an incredible parade of fsh dishes, almost anything your heart desires
from the sea. Among our favourites is the fery goong pad kreung gang
(prawn curry). The menu has no prices and is in Thai only, so if you get
carried away (with whole fsh especially) you might be in for a surprise
come check-bin time. No matter, the Phang Nga Bay views and the
chance to chill in this peaceful seaside spot are well worth it.
Those seeking a meal beyond Sirays more rustic oferings will want
to head to the luxurious Westin Siray Bay, a rather incongruous but
exquisite addition to the Siray scene that opened in 2010, where the
resorts 259 rooms and pool villas spill lavishly over a promontory. There
are six restaurants to choose from, but we went for some Indian cuisine
in the air-conditioned cool of MIX Lounge for lunch, and indulged in the
excellent choco rush treat cake and kahlua and vanilla mousse pyramid
desserts. For those seeking a dietary boost, the varied menu highlights
dishes that include nutrient-rich superfood ingredients such as salmon,
blueberries, spinach and papaya. More formal dining with a pan-Asian
menu is available at Eest restaurant, while the casual open-air Prego by
the Beach restaurant-bar next to one of the swimming pools ofers an
inviting spot for families to relax and cool down, plus a moon deck to
drink in the lovely evening bay views along with your cocktails.

Confession: we dont like monkeys. Theyre greedy
and grabby, and they remind us of that unwanted
cousin who always turns up to spoil the party with
his disruptive neediness. But many people do like
monkeys, and for them the Monkey Viewing Platform is the place to go.
On the Siray side of the connecting bridge to Phuket is a mangrove forest
teeming with Macaque monkeys, who seem to live pretty posh lives
gorging on the bananas thrown at them by visitors throughout the day.

Ok, Koh Sirays not exactly a shopping hot spot but our stroll around
the sea gypsy village yielded some great fnds on cultured pearl
jewellery from the handful of vendor stalls along the beachfront road.
We picked up some pearl bracelets for only 100 baht each with a half-
hearted bargaining efort, and there were rings, earrings and necklaces
in a rainbow of pearly shades on display as well. There are also seashells
of all shapes and sizes on sale but the ethics of buying these are ify.
Had the previous owners, the molluscs, departed from their safe
homes willingly before the shells were taken away to market? Theres
no way to know for sure.
For as long as we can remember, Koh Sirays been one of those areas
on Phuket touted as being just on the verge of a property gold rush
but never quite getting there. On our latest visit, however, we found
the coastal road along Haad Pleumsuk (Happiness Beach) buzzing
with building activity. The Moon Terrace villa estate, with a number
of sea-view homes already built and occupied on the hillside, is
expanding, building 15 more villas up the hill and another seven the
waterfront side of the road, says Esa Huovila, Managing Director of
St James Properties, sole agent for the villas. The villas each have four
bedrooms and an of ce plus private pools. Some are still available for
sale, starting at 42 million baht.

of 42 two-storey, two-bedroom
condos with private pools and
rooftop terraces is being built
by Taa & Associates, a local developer and architect that has already
launched a number of Nchantra-branded villa estates in the Chalong
and Nai Harn areas and worked on some of the regions best-known
resorts including the JW Marriott Khao Lak. The Nchantra condos are
being sold exclusively through the Jones Lang LaSalle agency in the 15-
20 million baht price range.
Our preferred Siray attraction is Wat Koh Siray, a hilltop temple with a
golden reclining Buddha, from which there are spectacular views that
rival the famed Phromthep Cape in Rawai without the tour buses or
crowds. Aside from the gruf old caretaker who implored us to make
a fower, incense and candle ofering, we had the place completely to
ourselves. Another stunning sight is the new Sea Gypsy Culture Centre
on Laem Tukkae (Gecko Cape) at the edge of the sea gypsy village.
Construction on the award-winning design was nearly complete but the
opening date had not been confrmed at the time of writing. Yet even as
they still sit empty, the sparkling, eco-friendly rounded structures inspired
by the shape of these seafaring peoples fsh traps are certainly worth a
look. Then you can go see the actual hand-crafted fsh traps in the village,
where nearly every home has at least a couple of traps set out in front.

About Chef Sathaporn Boodmeechai
Thai national Sathaporn Boodmeechai embarked on his culinary journey as a child, thanks
to his keen interest in his familys restaurant. Inspired by the innovative dishes he saw
there, he entered the hotel industry at 17 years old, on the bottom rung of the career
ladder, giving him an excellent grounding in how each part of a kitchen is run.
In 2007 he was asked by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to represent the prestigious
"Thai Food Promotion" project in the Czech Republic, bringing the tastes of Thailand to
central Europe.
Promoting Thai food internationally continued to be a passion of his; in 2009, while
working at Banyan Tree Phuket, he took the favours of Thailand to The Promotion of Thai
Food at Taipeis Sherwood Hotel.
He is delighted to now be Director of Kitchen Operations for the prestigious Thanyapura
Group, which includes DiVine Restaurant at Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club, and
Thanyamundra resort in Khao Sok, Surat Thani. Im so enthusiastic about their passion for
using the freshest, organic ingredients throughout their kitchen operations, he said.
Ingredients (makes 2 portions)
For salad
2 beetroot (medium size) cooked
100 gm feta cheese, diced small
100 gm rocket salad
50 ml olive oil
30 ml balsamic reduction
Green pistachio vinaigrette
50 gm pistachio nuts, chopped
30 gm shallots, chopped
10 gm parsley, chopped
10 ml red wine vinegar
50 ml olive oil
Salt and black pepper to taste
Method
Green pistachio vinaigrette
Mix the pistachios, shallots, parsley and pepper together.
Add red wine vinegar, salt and olive oil to taste.
Salad
Boil the beetroot until cooked and starting to peel, then slice
into six half-centimetre pieces and six very thin pieces. Dice the
remaining beetroot and mix with the green pistachio vinaigrette.
Dice the feta cheese into small pieces and marinate with olive
oil and black pepper.

ravioli, rocket salad, green
pistachio vinaigrette
Create the beetroot ravioli by placing the thicker beetroot at
the bottom, add the feta cheese and top with the thinly sliced
beetroot.
Arrange the ravioli on the dish and garnish with rocket lettuce.
Top with the pistachio vinaigrette and balsamic reduction.

Sukko culture) of the Flower Floating Ritual similar to Loy Kratong, where

A variety of 40 spa treatments prepared by
Sukko's certifed Thai Herbalist and based on
ancient Thai medical theory is ofered at
Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4

recipes and procedures have been handed

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy a healing art that promotes
massage, when combined with specifc herb and spice oils, as a method
to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments at the
American Aromatherapy Association.
Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in
Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties

Real estate agents are an integral component of the property industry in
Thailand. As in all countries, such professionals facilitate sales and purchases
of property. Indeed, for foreigners who may live outside Thailand for part of
the year, selling a villa or condo is nearly impossible without the assistance of
an agent. In order to use any professional service, it is worth understanding
the extent of regulation touching that profession, to understand the level
of service; integrity and ethical standards which ought to be present in a
commercial relationship with an agent.
Thai law regulates agents conduct via the Civil and Commercial Code (the
CCC). The CCCs relevant provisions apply to all agents, and not just those
involved in the real estate business. The CCC also contains rules governing
brokers (note the diference between agents and brokers an agent acts on
behalf of a principal, such as a seller or buyer, while a broker introduces an
opportunity for a contract to be concluded; although often, an agent and
broker may perform the same tasks). This article will provide an overview on
the laws governing agents, with a particular focus on how the laws apply in a
real estate context.
It should be noted that there are Thai real estate agent organizations in Thailand,
some of which are reputable and carry weight due to their membership and
organization. However, there is no single umbrella organization to point to as
the only of cial organization. This is not specifc to Thailand, as in many other
jurisdictions there appear to be multitudes of real estate agency organizations.
Appointing an Agent
Appointment of an agent in connection with the sale and purchase of property
must be in writing. According to the CCC, if an underlying transaction is
required by law to be in writing, then the appointment of an agent pertaining
to such transaction must also be written. Since sales of immoveable property
(i.e. land or buildings) are required by law to be in writing, the appointment of a
real estate agent in furtherance of the transaction must also be in writing. This,
of course, emphasizes the need to avoid reliance upon verbal assurances.
Authority
Under the CCC, agents have two types of authority to act on behalf of the
principal general authority and special authority. General authority allows
the agent to do acts of management on behalf of the principal, except for,
among other things, selling or mortgaging immoveable property; and leasing
of immoveable property for more than three years. Special authority allows an
agent to do whatever is necessary to execute the matters entrusted to him or
her by the principal. Thus, if someone requires an agent to sell property on his
or her behalf, or lease property for a term greater than three years, such special
authority is required.
Duties
An agents legal duties are also set forth by the CCC. Under the law, an agent
has a statutory obligation to act according to the express or implied directions
of the principal. It is thus important for a principal to clearly provide instructions
for an agent pertaining to a transaction. Furthermore, the agent is required to
provide the principal with all relevant information pertaining to the conditions
of the transaction. As such, the principal has the right to be updated by an
agent at all times. After the agency has come to an end, the agent is required
by law to render an account to the principal concerning the matter.
Liability
Importantly, an agent is liable for injury resulting from negligence or the non-
execution of the agency. As a result, in a real estate transaction, if an agent
commits a negligent act that causes harm to any of the relevant parties, the
agent can be held liable. Furthermore, a principal is bound to third parties
by the acts of an agent performed in the course of the agents duties. Thus,
if an agent provides, say, a purchase price to a prospective buyer, the seller/
principal is bound by that price if relied upon by the buyer. There are many
ways for discussions on price or terms to be unclear or undecided. A common
international method is to state that terms are subject to contract, which, in
actual fact, can mean terms are agreed in principle and could be changed
on either side without liability. This is a dif cult area to assess when emails
are exchanged quickly, combined with telephone calls and other actions. It is
recommended to maintain a standard of communication which clearly states
and repeats the principle terms in each exchange of correspondence.
If an agent acts outside the scope of his or her authority, the principal is
generally not bound by the agents actions. The principal, however, can be
bound if he or she ratifes the agents unauthorized action. If such ratifcation
by the principal doesnt exist, the agent is personally liable to the third party.
Brokerage
The CCC also provides rules governing brokerage arrangements. While
agents may act on behalf of a principal, brokers facilitate a deal and introduce
the parties to a contract. Under the CCC, brokers are entitled to receive
remuneration (usually in the form of a commission) only if their introduction/
procurement of the parties was responsible for the conclusion of the contract.
Importantly, a broker is generally entitled to remuneration even if no written
contract exists between a party and the broker. Further, a broker can be
reimbursed for expenses only if agreed upon by the parties. Expenses can be
reimbursed even if the contract is not concluded.
Foreign Participation
Pursuant to the Foreign Business Act (1999), real estate agency and brokerage are
restricted industries. They are categorized as being felds in which Thais are not
yet ready to compete with foreigners. As such, foreign ownership in these felds
is greatly limited. Any foreign participation in such business must be carefully
structured in strict accordance the law. There are real estate agencies in Thailand
which do have foreigners working for those companies and any such companies
must be mindful of compliance with the relevant rules regarding their own
structures, payments to staf, ratio of foreign and Thai staf and allocation of duties.
Conclusion
Agency and brokerage are regulated by laws in Thailand. When your property
transaction touches upon an issue relating to agency or brokerage, or if you are
operating a brokerage, be mindful of these rules, and if all parties act in good
faith, legal assistance should only be necessary in relation to the due diligence,
contract and other procedural mechanisms to complete a transaction.

The days when hotels defned luxury as every bedroom having its own
en suite bathroom are long gone and it would be unthinkable now to
imagine otherwise. Even a guest at Her Majesty (The Queen of Englands)
pleasure would expect the same these days, though I'm unsure whether
Phuket Provincial ofers the same courtesy. Actually, I think they've dropped
being detained at Her Majestys Pleasure in favour of something less
salubrious sounding, but never having enjoyed that pleasure, I'll refrain
from speculating further. For those non UK citizens who wonder what on
earth I'm talking about, we Brits for centuries used this quaint expression
for those who were quite frankly 'banged up', 'in the nick, 'doing time' or, to
put it bluntly, in prison. I'm digressing, so to return to where we began, its
all about 'redefnition' and in this instance, luxury redefned. And with that
in mind, I can state categorically that there has never been a better time to
rent a luxury villa in Phuket. OK its a corny link, but it'll have to do.
With the downturn in sales since the start of the recession, and a greater
number of owners wishing to capitalise on their unsold properties,
there are some beautiful villas which, until now, would never have been
available for rent. Likewise there are a number of professional real estate
agencies who have created rental divisions aimed entirely at providing the
discerning traveler with the best properties at very afordable prices.
I should know, because like the Remington shaver adverts of old, I realised
this had such great potential I created the company! To be fair I cant take
all the credit or my wonderful staf might keelhaul me. It was actually as a
result of repeated requests from our clients for this service that we made
the decision to set up a division specifcally to manage these villas and
pamper this new breed of client. We difer from old style property rental
agencies because we're not looking to proft from rentals; we're providing
a service to our villa owners by renting out their beautiful properties to
discerning clients and providing a
stunning villa to guests who may
eventually become prospective
buyers. In short, we cut out the
middle man so everyone wins and so
far it has proved successful. Of course
we need to cover our costs but they
are kept to a minimum because our
business comes from sales.
The client who previously would
only have looked at glossy websites
and tourist magazines promoting
5-Star resort-managed villas now
has an option and, in most cases,
it's a superior product at a vastly
lower price. What these properties
previously lacked was bespoke
services which, to be fair, were only available at 5-star resorts; private chefs,
masseuses, chaufeurs, limousine services, airport pick- ups, yacht charters,
car hire... the list is endless. Now agencies like ours have the dedicated
manpower, or should I saw womanpower, to cater exclusively for these
discerning clients and utilise the very best luxury properties from our
inventory only. We do not rent out inferior properties and we do not take
on any villas which do not meet our own exacting standards .
It all began with the demise of the tour operator in favour of the internet
booking, which gave tourists the ability to book their own fights, select
their own hotels, arrange airport taxis and so on, all from the comfort of
their armchair at home.
Now they can go one step further, they can book a couples or family
holiday in a luxury villa with two to eight bedrooms, fabulous infnity
edged swimming pools with stunning sea views in a private environment.
Its your own multi-million dollar home for a few days or a few months for,
in some instances, little more than the cost of a hotel room in a 4/5 star
hotel. And you get privacy and seclusion, if that's what you desire.
Unlike a resort, which has staf and guests running around day and night, a
luxury private villa has staf only when you require them and no nosy and
annoying guests to spoil the experience. These villas have been lovingly
furnished for the pleasure of their owners and often feature facilities not
found in resort-managed villas. This places a great burden of trust in the
agent to ensure the villa is cared for during the rental, while allowing the
guest complete freedom to do as he or she pleases.
If you've never tried this type of holiday I'd highly recommend it. There has
never been a better time to enjoy pampered luxury at a price that might
surprise you. England's own dear Queen would never choose to stay in
a resort; she prefers to stay in a private villa every time and who would
argue with her!

Kanom Jin Phuket: This is a
vermicelli-based dish served with a
variety of curry sauces. Often eaten as
breakfast, it comes with a range of fresh
vegetables, boiled eggs, and curried fsh
mousse (Hor Mok).
Oh Tao: (Also known as Hoi Tod Hokgian). This is a fried oyster
dish prepared with eggs, four, bean sprouts and taro root. Its
a favourite Phuket snack. Look for it at the Oh Tao Wongwian
Restaurant, located near the Clock Tower Circle, Phuket Road, or
at the Oh Tao Restaurant next to Bang Neaw Municipality School,
Phuket Road.

Mee Sue: Phukets breakfast noodles with a
salty taste and white colour when uncooked
are boiled and favoured with oriental spices.
They can be served with sliced pork or chicken
accompanied by boiled rice or rice soup. Kuo
Kwan Restaurant, located on Phuket Road near
Robinsons department store, is rightly famous
for this simple but tasty dish.
Mee Hok Kian: This is made with large yellow noodles similar
to Japanese Soba. Mee Hok Kian can be served with pork-bone
soup and/or dried noodles. A delightful variety known as Mee
Hok Kian Pak includes fried noodles, soup, egg, fried onions, pork
crackling and a choice of pork, fsh or squid. Recommended Mee
Hok Kian restaurants are Mee Ao Gay, located on Poonpol Road,
and Mee Sapam at Sapam Village, Thepkasattri Road. Clock Tower
Circle, Phuket Road, or at the Oh Tao Restaurant next to Bang
Neaw Municipality School, Phuket Road.

View Antique Buildings.
A hundred years ago, Phuket City had a prosperous economy based
on tin mining, and even back then was an international centre with
a large expatriate community of Chinese and Europeans. They built
beautiful homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese terraced
townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations which stretch back
from the road. The interiors often include walled gardens and fountains, and
are beautifully furnished with antiques and Chinese inspired decorations.
Rommanee Road is a fne example which has been fully restored. Visit Talang
Road, Yaowarat Road and Dibuk Road. Nowadays, these streets in the Chinese
quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring
antique shops, speciality restaurants and more.
The Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse and the town branch of the Siam City
Bank are further examples of architecture from the past. All well worth a visit.

Rabies is a viral disease which afects the central nervous system,
essentially the brain and spinal cord and is transmitted from infected
mammals to humans. Once symptoms appear in humans who have
not been vaccinated, the disease is invariably fatal. The good news
for my friend, and others, is there have been no human deaths from
rabies in Phuket for over 20 years.
All mammals, including humans are susceptible to rabies. In Phuket,
cats, dogs and monkeys are the most likely mammal to contract and
pass on the disease to humans, and its important to understand that
humans can only contract rabies through exposure to a rabid animal.
Exposure is nearly always through a bite, but rabies can also be
transmitted if a rabid animal scratches a person or if its saliva comes
into contact with broken skin.
Rabies
Recently a friend, whilst riding his bike, was
bitten rather severely by a dog here in Phuket.
Apart from the trauma of the dog bite, which
was bad enough, he was quite concerned
about rabies.
To decrease the likelihood of getting rabies, it's best to minimise any
exposure to animals that may have the disease and this certainly
includes any wild animal, including stray dogs and cats which are
acting abnormally. The Thai authorities are also reducing the risk by
vaccinating dogs and cats, and if you have a pet, you should ensure
that it has been vaccinated. Keeping exotic or wild animals as pets
should be discouraged, as is having your photo taken with wild
animals on Bangla Road and at other tourist areas.
If you are bitten, or believe you've been exposed, immediately
clean the area with lots of soap and water and see a doctor as soon
as possible. It's likely that the doctor will recommend a course of
rabies injections, possibly including a vaccine and Rabies Immune
Globulin, depending on whether you've been vaccinated before.

These injections are not as painful as common myth has led some
people to believe, but they are expensive. You'll also need to attend
a hospital or clinic on fve occasions, as the course requires fve
injections over a 28 day period.
It's very rare in Phuket for the observation or testing of an animal to
rule out the possibility of rabies. In some other countries, authorities
may catch the animal and keep it under observation to see if it
develops rabies and only then do the bite victims get their rabies
shots. Another option is to kill the animal and examine the brain
tissue to eliminate or confrm rabies. Again this is rarely done here in
Phuket and you're more likely to just get the rabies shots.
If you get rabies, the early symptoms include irritability, headache,
fever and sometimes itching or pain at the site of exposure. The
disease eventually progresses to spasms of the throat and the
muscles used for breathing, convulsions, delirium, paralysis and
eventually death. Remember, by the time any symptoms appear,
rabies cannot be successfully treated. Usually the time between
exposure and the onset of symptoms is two to ten weeks, although
much longer time periods have been reported.
There's also a vaccine that's given to people
who are at risk of getting rabies, for example
veterinarians and those who work with wild
animals. In some countries being vaccinated
for rabies before coming to Thailand is
recommended by health of cials, although
this is not really necessary, unless you intend
to work with wild animals.
Its good to know that rabies is not a serious disease in Phuket, but
the possibilities of contracting the disease still exist. Its also nice
to know that exposure to a rabid animal does not always result in
rabies. If preventive treatment is obtained promptly following a rabies
exposure, nearly all cases of rabies will be prevented. However, if
preventive treatment is not administered and signs of rabies develop,
the disease is invariably fatal. Most doctors here in Phuket therefore
recommend that all bites from animals where you're unsure if they've
been vaccinated should be evaluated by a qualifed expert or doctor.
