Marathon glory for HCF runners

Despite the threat of April showers, the weather stayed mercifully dry for the most part on Sunday 22nd April, for the Virgin London Marathon. This inspiring annual event sees 37,000 runners from elite to beginners take part, often to raise money for charity. Running to raise funds for HCFs marathon partner The Outward Bound Trust were Giovanni Cozzi, Director of C&E Operations and Ehud (Udi) Keisary, Assistant Operations Manager at Hilton London Metropole, Justin Saunders, Cluster Training Manager for Central & East London, Bronwyn Hartney, Area Sales Manager at Hilton Cobham and Marc Fery, Sous Chef at The Waldorf Hilton. Running to raise funds for HCF and CLIC Sargent was Chris Jefferson, Head Chef at Hilton London Heathrow Airport. Commiserations to Andrew Adan of Hilton Newcastle Gateshead and Stephane Weit of Hilton Cobham who due to training injury were unable to take part as planned. Huge congratulations to our runners for their 26.2 miles achievement. For more pics and video interviews with Udi, Marc and Justin please click here.

Service with a smile at Bath ball

Hilton Bath City has shared more photos from their first Charity Ball held on 24th March. This event was held in aid of HCFs partner Keynsham Mencap to raise money for their Super Saturday Club, which offers vital weekend social opportunities for children with a range of disabilities. Sophia Cree, Foundation Champion, said: It was with great excitement that we welcomed 130 guests into the hotel, where they were given a welcome drink in either Mencaps maroon colour or the Foundations green colour; this was a brilliant talking point for guests to start with. Before

the sumptuous four course dinner guests got the chance to buy raffle tickets and peruse and bid on the silent auction. Prizes included stays in Cardiff, Brighton and London as well as tickets to see Birds of a Feather at the Theatre Royal. Toast master Richard Luscombe got the speeches started whilst guests tucked in to a delicious starter. After dinner the raffle prizes where drawn then the winning bids for the silent auction were announced before the final live auction took place. Everyone got into the spirit of bidding, wanting the chance to win tickets to Aviva

Premiership in London; or a weekend stay plus flights for two in the Hilton Arc de Triomphe; who wouldnt want to snap up the chance to have a hot air balloon flight for two over historic Bath? Sophia added: Once all bids were in everyone had to get up and dance the rest of the evening away, everyone had a brilliant time and noone wanted it to end. Well done and congratulations to all the organisers. The event has raised 6,826 - a brilliant result.

Pragues Wild Geese charity auction

On 29th March Hilton Prague Old Town organised a charity auction Hus kusy (Goose Auction), accompanied by a concert of wellknown actors and singers. During the evening, items donated by famous Czech celebrities were auctioned off. A total of 60,400 CZK (2,000) was raised for the organisation Letni Dum, which helps young people move to independent living when they leave institutional care. The Nadace Divok Husy (Wild Geese Foundation) took a big role in arranging the event and securing the star performers. The evening was inaugurated by Valerie Zawadsk and Ji Zboil. Petr Vacek, famous actor, enjoyed his role as an auctioneer and created a relaxed atmosphere. All the performers kindly donated their services free of charge, and those were Marcela Bezinov, Marcela Holanov, Simona Postlerov, Martin Maxa, Zbynk Drda, Michaela Dolinov and Heidi Jank. A video from the evening can be seen here. Luca Crocco, General Manager of the hotel, said: www.hilton-foundation.org.uk

I am glad that the hotel is supporting more and more charity activities. The auction was the second big beneficial event organized in the Hilton Prague Old Town hotel. Thanks to the success of the evening, we have decided to continue in the cooperation with Divoke Husy Foundation and repeat the event again.

Spin of Hope for cancer children

Feel the burn... Team members at Hilton Copenhagen Airport show their support for children with cancer.

Team members from Hilton Copenhagen Airport in the Danish capital joined forces with Hilton Malm City in Sweden for the charity event "Spin of Hope" on Saturday 31st March. The cities are just 28 kms apart, separated by the sea, joined by a bridge. The idea of the annual event, organised by charity partner Barncancerfonden is to keep as many spinning cycles as possible in

action for 12 hours between 7.00am -7.00pm across Sweden. Jenny Lune, Foundation Champion at Hilton Copenhagen Airport reported: It was a great success, 61 different gyms around Sweden had spinning cycles running for the cause. Team members from Hilton Copenhagen Airport and Hilton Malm could buy time on the bikes and all raised money went directly to aid children with cancer. Hilton

Copenhagen Airport and Hilton Malm had two bikes running and together we contributed DKK 4400 (484). Thanks to so many participants taking part, a total of KR 1,3 million (140K) was raised on this Spin of Hope day for Barncancerfonden. Foundation Champion Elizabeth Major has led by example, becoming a formally trained officiator at Panathlon competitions.

Flying high: Stansted and Panathlon

Panathlon Challenge, a charity creating sporting opportunities and providing equipment and competitions like mini-paralympics for young disabled people around the country, approached Hilton London Stansted Airport in 2009 seeking funds to support its new work in Essex. The hotel chose Panathlon as its charity partner for the first time the following year for the annual HCF Around the World in a Day fundraising event. Led by Elizabeth Major, the Foundation Champion, the hotel raised a staggering 8,229 one of the highest amounts raised by any Hilton hotel in the UK that year which helped the charity to buy sporting equipment for competitions which in turn many Hilton team members came to see. Since the early collaboration the hotel has continued to support Panathlon through traditional fundraising as well as creative activities, including supporting Panathlons 9,900 grant application to HCF and providing the charitys first proper office space now housed in a former meeting room of the hotel. Team members of the Hilton London Stansted continued to go beyond the call of duty, says Ashley Iceton of Panathlon, by for example learning how to and officiating sports competitions for 100 disabled youngster in November 2011 and hosting the annual Panathlon Outstanding Achiever Award event for Christmas lunch with 25 local disabled school children, carols around the Christmas tree and Father Christmas handing out presents in December 2011. Liz Major says Its fantastic to support Panathlons work as we see it making such a huge impact on local disabled children. On May 12th Hilton London Stansted will host The Panathlon Ball with triple Paralympic Champion Giles Long. And Hilton London Stansted and Panathlon will be working together again for this years Around the World in a Day event on May 20th to be held at the airport terminal. Ashley said:

Panthalon has worked with over 50 different funding partners in the last 10 years, but the Hilton team are by far the greatest supporters, by the efforts they all put in at all levels. They provide the role model for other partnerships to follow and we cant thank them enough.

Guiding the way: Southampton

Colleauges from Hilton Southampton were pleased to support Guide Dogs for the Blind with their funds from Around the World in a Day 2011. Representatives from the charity visited the hotel together with some four-legged friends to receive the cheque for 2,105 and thank team members for their support. The charity, which provides trained assistance dogs for young people with visual impairments, will also benefit from the hotels forthcoming Around the World in a Day event. Hilton Southampton has also donated 1,000 to the Brains Trust, for its work supporting children and young people with brain tumours. Additionally they donated 2,000 towards a grant of 4,385 approved by the Foundation for No Limits Southampton, to help pay for washing facilities, clothes washing facilities and food parcels for homeless young people.

Climbing to confidence
On March 26th, with a grant received from Hilton Edinburgh Airport (reported in the April issue of highlights), primary school pupils from Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary School in Blackburn, enjoyed an amazing day and fabulous trip to the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena followed by a free lunch at the hotel. The hotel had supported the climbing activity with a grant of 587, supplementing the money pupils had been raising during the year. Whilst climbing pupils enjoyed team building and a chance to build their confidence in a non-academic activity outside of the classroom. Pupils noted that whilst climbing seemed scary at first they had fun and enjoyed themselves tremendously learning a new skill and helping each other through difficult situations. Class teacher Lisa Conaghan thanked HCF for its support to the local community, saying:

afford an experience like this. We hope you continue your work in the community as its provides memories that will last in childrens hearts forever.

Many of our children come from disadvantaged backgrounds and would never have been able to

Meningitis Trust receives boost from Maidstone

Inspired by a member of the local community, Darren Simmons, who suffered from meningitis at the age of ten and which left him partially paralysed for a time, Hilton Maidstone nominated the Meningitis Trust to receive 835 from its fundraising in 2011. To mark the Olympic year in London, Darren is set to row 2012 miles on a rowing machine and on the water throughout the year. This equates to 3,238,000 metres, which in turn equates to nearly 9,000 metres a day. Darrens aim is to row 10,000 metres a day and also undertake a rowing marathon a month, which is a distance of 42,195 metres. As well as being paralysed from the waist downward for about ten weeks, meningitis left Darren with a weak left side of his body, hearing loss, memory problems and balance and back problems. The Meningitis Trust provides support to children and young people as well as adults who have had the condition and experience its aftermath. Pictured above left to right, Melissa Brown, Hotel Manager Leonardo Gagliano, Darren Simmons and Katie Horton. Melissa and Katie are Foundation Champions at the hotel. A further 1,091 was donated to the Maidstone United Raiders, a local disability football club.

Cologne scents charity success

Team members from Hilton Cologne visited their nominated charity partner Frderverein fr Krebskranke Kinder eV Kln, to handover a cheque with donations totalling 5,203.30 from hotel fundraising in 2011. The charity provides activities and support for children with cancer. The money was raised through staff fundraising, from participation in Ducks for Change (where 1 per box purchased from HCF goes to local causes), and from a generous donation from Mrs Zumbansen, a regular guest at the hotel. The hotel is again set to raise a great deal for HCF in 2012, and they have kicked off with Chef Michael Borgers participation in a cycle race in early April. Pictured above left to right are: Michele Dhring (Guest Relations Manager and part of the Blue Energy Foundation Team), Frau Merhar (Frderverein fr Krebskranke Kinder eV Kln), Jrg Potreck (Cluster General Manager for Hilton Cologne and Hilton Bonn), Sandra Steinbach (Front Office Manager and Foundation Champion).

Generous gifts to local deaf school

Conrad Istanbul made a magnificent donation of 30 desktop PCs to the Rotary Foundation Elementary School of Deaf and Mute Children in Tuzla, Istanbul. This was achieved in partnership with software company Anix Computer who cleaned up the PC software, and completed the installation at the school. In total 30 computers (which are three years old and replace much older machines at the school) were installed in the PC room and classrooms. This was highly appreciated by the school as they depend on technology during their courses due to the special condition of their students. Foundation Champion Derya Tikansak reports: During our visit to the school our team members and the owner of Anix Computer Mr Ufuk Sayver, delivered pieces of apple-candy and a bag of cookies to each student (total 100) made by our kitchen team, to celebrate the 23rd April Children and Independence Festival in Turkey, which is the only festival in the world dedicated to children by the government. The students were very happy and the school management appreciated the donations and we already received their thank you message on the same day. This amount was achieved through participation in Around the World in a Day 2011 and through fundraising efforts ongoing during the year. The next AWD event on 20th May will raise further welcome funds for this charity partner. Jenson, who is totally blind, benefits from the tailored activities and support offered by Social Eyes and offers a chance for social interaction with children who are also visually impaired. Before we received the Just Cant Wait bed from Newlife, Evie-Anne was sleeping in her pushchair and cried throughout the night. We did not know what sleep was but now she sleeps the whole night. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
The above feedback was received from Michelle, the mother of Evie-Anne, pictured left, one of the 36 terminally ill children to have benefited from the Just Cant Wait project to date.

Just cant wait provides vital care

HCFs central two-year grant of 17,550 to Newlife, a national charity that provides care and support to any of the estimated 770,000 children with disabilities or life-limiting conditions in the UK, has already seen great results. Research shows that 1 in 3 children are not provided with the equipment they need to help them cope with their disability, which often leaves families to struggle financially when buying equipment themselves. Newlife buys, delivers and recycles palliative equipment that is desperately needed by terminally ill children nearing the end of their lives. Since the launch of the Just Cant Wait pilot project in March 2011 Newlife, with the support of HCF, was able to establish a bank of 10 specialist beds, 14 buggies and 5 mobile hoists that can be issued immediately. The project aims to provide equipment on loan to families in any part of the UK within 72 hours of receiving their application. By March of this year, 36 items of equipment had been loaned to children aged between 6 months and 16 years old and by the middle of the funding of the two-year grant, Newlife is expecting to have issued equipment with an equivalent value of 250,000. Filling a much needed gap in the care for terminally ill children, Newlife was able to provide a buggy for sixyear old Alexander from West Yorkshire, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2010. In late 2011 it was decided that no further active treatment would be given and Alexander and his family focussed on making the most of the time they had left together as a family. Newlife provided a suitable reclined, all terrain buggy for the familys trip to Lapland visiting Santa in December. Rachel Greenwood, Alexanders physiotherapist, writes: My colleagues and I were so pleased to have your service available, at this time when we were able to offer no other solutions. I cant thank you enough for your efficient, sensitive and amazingly responsive service. Thank you to team members who have helped with HCF fundraising, enabling us to support Newlife in their mission.

Loving the Lindenhofje children

The team at Hilton Amsterdam Schiphol Airport have got behind local cause and HCF charity partner Stichting Vriended van het Lindenhofje, donating 2,273.94 from their Small Change Big Difference fundraising. Generous guests opted to give 1 on their bills during the campaign, which ran from October until the end of December 2011. The money will be used to enable children and their families to have short respite breaks in Arnhem and elsewhere, a chance to recharge batteries, have a change of scene from the day to day reality of living with a life-limiting and frequently painful illness. Due to support from trained carers and medical professionals, the holidays give families a chance to simply be themselves, and meet with other families in similar situations, thus reducing isolation. The hotel is looking forward to supporting the hospice in 2012.

Future chefs visit hotel

On Monday 16th April Hilton Warsaw Hotel and Convention Centre hosted some very special guests children from the local friendly orphanage. Sven Thomsen the Executive Chef and his team prepared cooking classes for 16 children (aged 5 to 17 years old). The aim of the event was to show children how the kitchen and F&B outlets operate. Monika Mikulska the Foundation Champion reports:

Park Lane promise

With funds raised during 2011, team members from London Hilton on Park Lane visted Fortismere School to donate 2,668 to help towards their alternative curriculum work. This enables children with learning difficulties to work towards a GCSE equivalent accreditation. Pictured below left Sam Rothwell, Deputy Inclusion Leader and below right, Amir Butt, Foundation Champion at the hotel with students and a helper from the school.

They were very happy to be here and enjoyed it very much especially cooking and eating of course :-) They also asked Sven and Remco Norden the GM millions of questions about the hotel. Some of them got a job offer from Remco, effective in 15 years!!

Freefall for AWD

Good luck to Katie Webster of Hilton Warwick / Stratford-uponAvon who is due to throw herself out of a plane for HCF and The Ingleby Foundation on 2nd May, particularly to raise funds for the Watermill Cafe, a working cafe for young people with disabilities and mental health conditions.

ADESCA visit
On April 19th six young students from the Parisian suburbs of Vieux St-Ouen, Arago and Debain-Michelet visited the Hilton Arc de Triomphe in Paris to learn about the hospitality industry. Supporting the aim to provide educational projects for young people, the hotel collaborated with ADESCA, a local association reaching out to students who grow up in underprivileged and disadvantaged areas. ADESCA involves students in socio-cultural activities as well as assists students in doing their homework. The students visit to Hilton Arc de Triomphe included a tour of the hotel and free snacks served in the Executive Lounge. Reservation Manager and Champion Alice Romano said it was important for students to see that hospitality is an accessible field for their future and that students were very impressed and left the hotel with a positive feeling.

Beautiful thinking
In March, Hilton Arc de Triomphe in Paris donated 305.50 to Junior Solidarit, a local association supporting children and young people affected by cancer. The organisation provides laptop and webcams that help children stay in touch with families, friends and the outside world in general whilst they are undergoing treatment. Children are supported by students volunteering to train them on how to use the technology. The money was raised in a sale for team members with beauty products provided free of charge by suppliers including Declor and Carita. The Conference & Events, Human Resources, Executive and Finance departments were integral members in organising this successful fundraising event. Foundation Champion Alice Romano said:

The team at Conrad Brussels have nominated ASBL La Clairire (The Glade), which supports young people affected by physical and learning disabilities. The grant of 2,859.10 will be used to buy iPads, perfect for interactive communication. Hi-res photos will be shared when available but meantime Business Development Coordinator Caroline Ancel reported that it was a great visit.

Everyone got involved and contributed to help children being happier whilst undergoing difficult medical treatment.
The HCF team welcomes Theresa Mutter who joined Simon, Louise, Pauliina, Angela and Patricia on 30th April. Theresa will be responsible for coordinating HCFs communications/PR and will be the first point of contact for European hotels as they undertake Foundation activites.
