Challenge
Grain collection is a seasonal business and storage has to be accomplished within minimum possible time to avoid damage to the produce. Thus, the operations demanded high efficiency and productivity levels to handle heavy movement loads during peak season within a specific stipulated turnaround time.
Our Solution
Passive UHF Gen2 RFID based automatic vehicle identification (AVI). Adani was evaluating proprietary active RFID for tracking vehicles, when BCIL demonstrated open and standards based passive UHF Gen2 RFID technology to meet their requirements. BCIL was entrusted to execute end to end RFID enabled Traffic Aid solution to automate data flow and enhance visibility. Our solution components included Motorola XR-480 readers & AN400 antennae with suitable weather poof enclosures, RFID tags and in-house developed middleware application. BCIL jointly worked with Omnia Technologies to custom design a reusable vehicle tag to suit operational requirements using EPC Gen2 technology. Tag design highlights were - easy application & removal, withstand harsh environmental pressures and optimum reading in vicinity to metal.
Objectives
efficiency levels for handling of 700+ truck loads per day l Ensure grade quality l Maintain silo consistency l Accurate weight based payment system l Aid and Management Traffic
l Faster l Increase
Customer Expectations
design of use l cost tag Low l Seamless integration to Terminal Operations & Management System (TOMS) l Withstand harsh environmental conditions l Central monitoring & management
l Ease l Simple
After completion, the vehicle enters the outbound weighing station, RFID reader system captures the tag to trigger the tare weight. RFID System at this point completes the transaction cycle and triggers the payment process. The tag is released for reuse and is returned at the exit gate.
Result
Our AVI solution using passive UHF Gen2 technology has helped Adani visualize operations real time, increase throughput, maintain high quality standards and reduce processing timelines.
Solution Highlights
l time information flow Real l Minimal human intervention l Single user interface l TCO Low
Process
Vehicle carrying food grain reports at the entry gate and details are entered in TOMS. Hereby, an associated RFID tag is issued which is attached to the side view mirror of the vehicle. As the vehicle enters the inbound weighing and quality sample collection station, the precisely mounted RFID antenna reads the tag and triggers the weighing process. Gross weight is measured and sample is taken via a robotic arm for quality evaluation. Based on the grain type brought in, the vehicle is directed to an unloading lane through a LED display.

As the vehicle approaches the RFID reader system at the dispensing lane, the tag is read to verify the assigned lane and trigger a query in the Oracle system for updated results. Based on the results, a visual indicator is flashed to guide vehicle further. Only quality verified vehicles are allowed to proceed for final dispensing.
