As an Iranian I was so happy when Sandra Bullock announced A separation an Iranian movie as the winner of academy award in the

best foreign language film section. Although this was not the first international award for Asghar Farhadi the director of A Separation but it was the biggest for him as well as for Iranian cinema . Farhadis A Separation as well as his previous movies About Elly and Chaharshanbeh Soori also won many international awards. His movies give a realist view on the relationships amongst middle class families, their social problems and other difficulties. His view makes you feel the story and characters. However Farhadi is not the only director who deals with social issues. But there are many other films which are made by different directors such as Jaafar Panahi , Majid Majidi, Mohsen Makhmalbaf and etc., who are trying to showcase the different classes of the Iranian society and their daily problems, in an artistic and realistic view . So we can say that the modern Iranians cinema is mostly concerned about the current social problems such as drug addiction, unemployment, divorce etc . Although these social movies are good for the society, the government does not support them as these movies put the government in a dark light. They indicate that the government was not able to bring the welfare and friendship to the society. These movies also analyze peoples relationships with others and its effects on others life. Due to this, for the past 6 - 7 years the Iranian cinema halls were full of cheap and mostly comic movies which were not even worth to watch for free. If we go back in time we can clearly see the changes in Iranian society as well as Iranian cinema. In the 80s the cinema in Iran was mostly about the Iran-Iraq war, stories concerning youth, patriots who

sacrificed their lives for the country. In 90s most of the movies were about the peoples life after the war, the consequences and the problems which came into existence because of the war. During the Iranian war, the film genre has often been portrayed as glorious and "holy". Some of the prominent movies of the Iranian war were: Ajans Shisheye by Hatamikia, In The Alleys of Love by Khosrow Sinai, Tears of Cold by Azizollah Hamidnejad and Duel by Ahmad Reza Darvish . Khosrow Sinai in his movie In the Alleys of Love, shows the most poetic view on the Iran Iraq war. Even after all these years, it is one of the leading films about this historical event from a humanistic aspect. Unlike other Iranian war cinemas that are fully supported by the Iranian government this film was made with numerous difficulties. Duel is the most expensive movie ever made in Iranian cinema history. It was directed by Ahmad Reza Darvish, who was mostly known for films about the Iran-Iraq war. Duel was shot in roughly 11 months in various cities of Iran. Also, it is the first Iranian movie to use Dolby Digital sound. After the Revolution of 1979, amidst the normal disorganization created by such a big change and the non-existence of clear-cut rules and regulation, Irans cinema was in disarray. After 1983, when finally filmmaking rules were outlined according to the post-revolution values and norms, expressing opposite political views, violence and sex were forced out of Irans cinema. Because of this situation some of the prominent actors, actresses and directors left the country after the revolution. Behrooz vosoughi is one of the most famous Iranian actors who played in many popular movies such as the Hamsafar and the Deer, left the country a few years after the revolution.

Now its the time to talk about the pre revolution cinema in Iran. The Iranian cinema before the revolution was full of simple but very popular movies such as Ganje Gharoon in 1965 by Siamak Yasemi. This was extremely simple with a very ordinary story but it was the most popular movie of its time. During the same time, there were some experienced and talented directors such as Ali Hatami who had made very good movies such as Soote Delan and mother. Dialogues and spending a lot of time for presenting his work made Hatami different from other directors. In 1956 Shahla Riahi made her first film Marjan and entered her name in the history of Iranian cinema as the first Iranian female director. During the genesis of the Iranian cinema in 1929 The Abi and Rabi, was directed by Avans Ooganians and filmed by Khan Baba Motazedi, this film is considered as the first Iranian feature movie. In the following years, in 1932, Abdolhossein Sepanta in Bombay made the first Iranian no-silent named The Lor girl. The film was welcomed to in Iran which in turn encouraged the production of several other films. During the last 80 years of cinema in Iran, it faced a lot of good and bad days. The previous generations of cinema family passed their experience to the new generations. Now Iranian cinema is a world renowned. In the past few years, different Iranian movies won a lot of international awards. The current cinema in Iran owes its success to the excellent work of directors such as Farhadi , Kiarostami ,Makhmalbaf , Majid Majidi , Bahman Ghobadi and Jafar Panahi who got their knowledge of film making from the old generations of Iranian film makers .
