Welcome to the Unabridged Collins-Robert Electronic French Dictionary! Congratulations on your purchase of the Unabridged Collins-Robert Electronic French Dictionary, the first unabridged CD-Rom edition of the famous two-volume Collins-Robert Comprehensive French Dictionary. Please take a few minutes to read this document, which gives you a few tips on how to make the best use of the program facilities under Windows. Remember to use online help to learn more about how to use the program and to find out more about the dictionary and its supplements. How to get the best out of the software under Windows Use a 800 x 600 screen resolution, or preferably higher (1024 x 768). 640 x 480 resolution is insufficient for this interface. To change the screen resolution, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel in the Windows task bar, open the Display file and then click on the last tab - Settings. You can also open the Display window by right-clicking on the Windows Desktop and choose Properties. Then go to the bottom right hand section of the screen and change the resolution to 800 x 600 or more. Set the display to thousands of colours. A 256 colour display mode is insufficient for the interface of the Collins-Robert dictionary. To change this setting, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel in the Windows task bar, open the Display file and then click on the last tab - Settings. You can also open the Display window by rightclicking on the Windows Desktop and choose Properties. Then go to the bottom left hand section of the screen and change the Colours setting to a higher value than 256 colours. Check the speaker volume. To listen to word pronunciations, check that the sound output of your computer is working properly and turn the volume up or down using the button in the task bar. Check that the hyperlink program appears in the task bar. This function makes it possible to open the dictionary from any Windows application by selecting a

word on screen and clicking on the button displayed in the task bar. To use it, the program called Hyperlink or Hyperappel must be activated when you start your computer. You should not have to worry about this because the setup program automatically adds it to Windows, so that you should have a button in the task bar, as follows:

. If this doesnt happen, or if the button disappears for any reason, restart the hyperlink program located in the set of programs created during the setup process: go to Start > Programs > Robert & Collins. NB: the program is called RCWINHYPER.EXE and you can find it in the installation file directory, which is, by default, C:\Program Files\Le Robert\Le Robert & Collins. Check that the fonts Verdana and Georgia are accessible in your system. These fonts are frequently used in the dictionary and make the text easier to read. Both fonts are usually pre-installed under Windows. To make sure, start any word processing program and check the list of available fonts. You can also check if these fonts are in the Windows > Fonts folder (their filenames are VERDANA.TTF and GEORGIA.TTF). If by any chance one of these fonts is not on your computer, you can download it from a website: just key download georgia.ttf in your favourite search engine. The Collins-Robert dictionary contains a supplement called Language in Use, which offers a large number of ready-made sentences you can use in various contexts. It also offers examples of letters and other documents presented as images. To visualize them, you must set up Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader on your hard disk. If you dont have one of these programs, you can download it free from the Adobe website (<http://www.adobe.com/> - click on the Get Adobe Reader logo).

Tips for the user on the Collins-Robert electronic French dictionary If you make frequent use of the hyperlink function, we advise you not to exit the program each time you look up a word Instead, put the program in the task bar or leave it open in the background, so that the dictionary does not have to restart each time you use hyperlink. You can right-click the hyperlink button to specify the language of the word you are looking for. By default - i.e. with a single click - the program will look the word up in both the French and English headword lists. If you wish to reinstall the program - for instance to install the full version on the hard disk -, you must exit the hyperlink application before restarting the setup program (SETUP.EXE on the CD-Rom). To do so, right-click the hyperlink button in the task bar and choose Close (or Fermer).
