On May 8th, elections will be held in the Christina School District, the biggest one in Delaware. In these elections, a member of the board that governs the districts destiny will be chosen. This is a 5-year-term position with no salary whatsoever. This time the member representing District G will be elected, but all the constituents that live within the district limits have the right to vote, and many Hispanics have no idea about it. One could say that it is an historic fact the absence of Hispanic voters in these types of elections where the only requirements are to be an American citizen and resident of Delaware, of legal age and to live in the Christina school district. The candidates are not required to be members of a political party as part of this process, and differently from other electoral processes, the constituents are not required to be registered to vote in order to participate. The District Board is the institution that decides over matters concerning our childrens education, and at the same time allows parents to express their concerns directly during meetings, as in every meeting there is a specific moment for the public to address its members, having previously requested it. It is important to take active part in this process that at the end will allow or not- to make positive changes in our states the public education system. The fact of the matter is that in these past weeks a controversy has risen about the participation of a group called Voices 4 Delaware Education Action Fund backing up a candidate, and it has even been said that they have spent a disproportionate amount of money for a position that, as we said before, does not generate any income. This has led politicians to get involved in a non-political process and to request an investigation from the department of elections about what they consider to be an excessive expense over the allowed contribution limit of $600. It is widely conversed about the possibility of obscure interests involved in leading the district with the states biggest educational budget and which has not been exempt of crisis in the past, towards a mediocre destination. Without knowing the reasons a specific group might have in the election of a member of the board, we consider more than appropriate to express the need to get informed to vote for the candidate that, according to our judgment, represents the best option to achieve a better education for our children and the children of our neighbors, so having said that, the only valid word is: participate.

The DREAM in Limbo

Thursday April 25th, the Delaware Senate Education Committee held a public hearing to discuss the states version of the Dream Act.
The proposal would allow children of undocumented immigrants that fulfill certain requirements to attend Community Colleges and Universities in Delaware paying residents in-state tuition rates. As mentioned previously, the Bill 169 (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act) was presented by Senator Robert I. Marshall with the support of Joe Miro and the hope that it would at least be approved by one vote during the present legislative session. Arguments in favor and against were presented during the hearing, like the case of Sue Payne, spokesperson for Citizens Above Party who said Someone who is from Baltimore or Philadelphia cannot get this benefit from Delaware, but someone who is here illegally can, adding that to hear the University of Delaware and Delaware Tech are already extending these benefits ... Im very surprised the citizens of this state have not taken them to court. Those who support the Bill state that undocumented students brought here as children and graduate from a Delaware high school deserve the same in-state tuition as other state residents. Opponents say giving those benefits to people here illegally is unfair to out-of-state students, who are American citizens and in some cases pay more than twice as much to attend one of Delawares three public institutions of higher education. Delawares version of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, popularly known as the Dream Act, is modeled after laws passed in other states around the country. The bills sponsor, Sen. Robert I. Marshall, said he hopes it will be passed by a vote in the full Senate, despite some vocal outcries against it. Im very well aware this is not a popular bill, said Marshall, D-Wilmington West. My office has gotten a lot of calls. The committee did not take a public vote on the measure, but Marshall said he will try to get the necessary signatures from four of its seven members to move the bill forward. Maria Matos, executive director of the Latin American Community Center in Wilmington, said she feels most undocumented college students essentially are Americans already. They came to this country as children and attended school here most of their lives, she said. These are children that grew up pledging allegiance to the flag in the schools, she said. UD officials have said passing the law might be unnecessary since illegal immigrants already have access to in-state benefits. Often, the best way to deal with something isnt legislation, UD President Patrick T. Harker said during a visit to Legislative Hall earlier this month. The chairman of the committee, Sen. David Sokola, said he would support moving the bill out of committee. This deserves to get to the [Senate] floor, and the public should get the chance to hear what everyone thinks of it, said Sokola, D-Newark. Brian Selander, Gov. Jack Markells spokesman, said the governor supports the idea of in-state benefits for undocumented students, but he has not yet decided if the bill is the best way to accomplish it. The governor believes that people who were brought through no choice of their own who have worked hard, finished high school and stayed out of trouble deserve an opportunity for higher education, Selander said. Similar laws in other states have been challenged in federal court, and some have suggested that passing a law in Delaware might not be worth risking a lawsuit. The committee did not vote on the bill and reported attempts to petition the committees members to release the measure to the full Senate for debate failed. When the bill was circulated to the seven committee members Thursday, it did not get the minimum four signatures needed to release it for a vote before the full Senate.

We Are the 99%

When growing up in Venezuela, I can vividly remember the elaborate parades that took place on celebrations for the el da del trabajador or workers day, which was always on May the 1st, but here in the U.S., it is known as May Day. This was always a national holiday, where no one worked, but celebrated the fact of working. It was a time where unions came together to show their pride of what they stood for and for defending workers rights. Today, there were many marches, protests and violent demonstrations all over the world for May Day. Back in September of last year, a protest group called Occupy Wall Street, begun in New York Citys Wall Street financial district. In doing some reading, I came to find out that the Canadian activist group Adbusters has then led to Occupy protests and movements around the world. These groups bring to light issues like social and economic inequality, greed, corruption and the influence of corporations on government, especially from the financial services sector. It is curious that these issues have been around for many years, but now, it seems obvious the inequality between the growing income disparities of the 1% wealthiest Americans and the rest of the population, hence the slogan of the Occupy Wall Street group We are the 99%. Its been argued that this slogan is as successful as the one Hell no, we wont go, from the Vietnam war era. Were you aware that one in every seven Americans lives below the poverty line? That is about 46.2 million people, but it might be even higher. Sad to report that this causes that one in six Americans have no health insurance, which translates into about 50 million people. It is difficult to comprehend the concept that out of every 17 Americans, at least one earns wages below the minimum wage which is $7.25 an hour. How is this happening to the people of the country of plenty? That is why May Day saw many marches of protests around different states of our country. Some marches were peaceful and others turned violent. Unfortunately, these issues can bring the best or the worst in all of us. I truly know that I am not part of that elite 1%, so, does that translate the fact that I fall into the 99% bracket...Are you part of the 99%? I am about fairness and equality...How about you?

WhOS reAlly BeNefitiNg frOM PUBliC eNergy SUBSiDieS? President Obama recently re-launched his crusade to wipe out the tax breaks afforded to American oil companies. This time, unleashing some of his most divisive and aggressive rhetoric on the subject yet, telling Congress it can stand with big oil companies, or... the American people. I think its time [oil companies] got by without more help from taxpayers, the President added. His words followed a measure introduced by Senate Democrats to dramatically raise the tax burden on oil companies while creating new credits for so-called renewables. Ultimately, the legislation narrowly missed the 60 votes needed to advance. But its now crystal clear that the Democratic Party, from the top down, is committed to turning anti-oil rhetoric into policy reality. The problem is their sales pitch to the American people rests on a lie. Yes, a lie. Over and over, Democrats talk about huge subsidies -- as if taxpayers are signing billion dollar checks to oil and gas companies. But oil companies dont get subsidies. Rather, like every other business, they are allowed to take tax deductions for the expenses they incur. A tax deduction and a government subsidy arent the same thing. When politicians use the terms interchangeably, many Americans are deeply misled. Oil company tax deductions arent the product of special favors. They are the kind of standard relief afforded manufacturers, mining companies, and other businesses to help defray the basic costs of operations. Oil companies can deduct their expenses for things like equipment purchases and rig-technicians salaries. The point of these deductions -- as for any other industry or individual -- is to ensure taxes are only levied on income after expenses. Oil companies can also deduct expenses related to exploration or development. The idea is to provide an incentive to take on the often substantial risk of trying to find new energy sources. When these efforts are successful, the energy market expands, prices go down, and America moves that much closer to true energy independence. But even these kinds of deductions arent unique to energy companies. There are many provisions in the tax code meant to encourage certain kinds of behavior. Mortgage deductions reward home ownership. There are special tax benefits for the money deposited into an individual retirement account or 401(k). Overall, the oil and natural gas industry benefits from about $2.8 billion in tax deductions. And thats actually a tiny price to pay for the massive benefits the sector generates for the rest of the economy. Over the past five years, through the thick of the recession, the oil and natural gas industry has added 160,000 new jobs. These firms now employ over 9 million people. And 2011 saw higher domestic oil production for the third year in a row. Now, there are players in the energy sector that do get federal subsidies, and they are massive. Theyre the alternative energy companies the White House is so fond of. The wind and solar sectors alone take in $12.5 billion annually in direct subsidies. Initially, this massive government support was justified on the grounds that clean tech was an infant industry that needed some help to start competing with traditional energy sources. But were now years and years into shelling out tens of billions in taxpayer dollars - in return for very little in the way of innovation or self-sustaining jobs. Today, each megawatt of solar energy is produced with a stunning $776 in investment and production tax credits. For wind power, its $56 per megawatt. Thats a huge public expenditure for not much energy production. Worse, despite the public largess, some of these clean tech companies have been based on business models so flawed they have already gone under. Solyndra, the solar panel manufacturer that went belly up last year, left American taxpayers on the hook for half a billion dollars in unpaid loans. Among other costly bankruptcies was Beacon Power, an electricity grid utility company that folded in October. Oil and natural gas companies arent getting subsidized -- theyre benefiting from the same, reasonable cost-of-operation deductions afforded to all kinds of industries. The real subsidies -- and the real scandal -- are to be found in renewable energy, which has taken in tens of billions in direct government payments over the past few years but still has little to show for it. Bernard L. Weinstein is associate director of the Maguire Energy Institute at Southern Methodist Universitys Cox School of Business and a Fellow with the George W. Bush Institute. NAtiONAl CANCer SUrViVOrS DAy National Cancer Survivors Day is Sunday, June 3, 2012. On this day, Seaford, Delaware will honor our citizens who are living with and beyond cancer. We will join hundreds of communities worldwide in celebrating life as part of the 25th annual NCSD. Celebrations will be held throughout the United States, Canada, and other participating countries, including the luncheon organized by the Nanticoke Cancer Care Center here in Seaford, Delaware. The luncheon will be held at the Seaford Moose Lodge on Sunday, June 3, starting at 1pm. Carol Kinsley will be our guest speaker and Jerry Jones will provide our entertainment. Ms Kinsley and Mr. Jones are cancer survivors and belong to our community. A survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer- from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life, according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation. In the United States, there are nearly 12 million people living with a history of cancer. Major advances in cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment have resulted in longer survival. However, a cancer diagnosis can leave a host of problems in its wake. Physical, financial, and emotional hardships often persist after diagnosis and treatment. Survivors may face many challenges such as hindered access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, financial problems, and psychological struggles. Despite these difficulties, cancer survivors can live active, productive lives. To improve the quality of life of cancer survivors, more resources and research are needed. The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, along with national sponsor, Coping magazine, encourages a greater commitment to resolving the issues of cancer survivorship. As the organizers of this local event, we are encouraging local survivors and their families to join us at this wonderful celebration. For more information, call 302-629-6611, ext. Latinos Bearing the Brunt of the Foreclosure Crisis

Policies to Alleviate the Pressure for Responsible Homeowners Needed
The effects of the housing markets collapse can be felt far and wide, though perhaps no more so than by Latinos and other communities of color. While the overall number of foreclosure filings has recently decreased, foreclosure remains a disproportionately significant problem for these communities. The continued instability that Latinos and other communities of color face in the housing market is particularly troubling because housing and homeownership is the best way for these communities to build their wealth and assets. Prior to the housing markets collapse in the final years of the Bush administration, Latinos were disproportionately targeted for risky subprime loans and were victims of predatory lending practices from major banks. In some cases, people of color were pushed into subprime loans by these lenders, even when their income and credit scores qualified them for a less-expensive mortgage. One study of 14 major banks found that this kind of discrimination was systematic: 30.9 percent of Hispanics and 41.5 percent of African Americans were offered these risky, expensive loans, while only 17.8 percent of whites were offered a similar mortgage. Considering that subprime mortgages can add over $100,000 in interest payments over the course of the loan repayment, these figures are especially troubling. The current foreclosure rate among Latinos is staggering. They face a foreclosure rate of 11.9 percent, significantly higher than the foreclosure rate among African Americans (9.8 percent), and appallingly higher than among whites (5 percent), according to the State of Communities of Color report. Latinos are also twice as likely as whites to be at risk of foreclosure today. Approximately 25 percent of Latinos and African Americans have been foreclosed upon or are struggling with serious delinquency, in comparison to just 12 percent of whites. Disconcertingly, these discrepancies remain when differences in income and credit rating are accounted for. The systematic inequality extends far beyond the initial foreclosure. A new study from the National Fair Houing Alliance finds that lenders and investors in home mortgages are statistically far less likely to maintain and market properties in Latino and African American neighborhoods than in neighborhoods that are predominantly white. Foreclosed-upon homes owned by these lenders and investors tend to fall into disrepair in mixed-ethnic neighborhoods at a much higher rate than in white communities. The upshot: Foreclosed homes owned by lenders or investors in Latino and African American neighborhoods are also less likely to have for sale signs in front of them to attract new home-owners and spur a recovery in local housing markets. The effects of this kind of neglect on the part of lenders and investors are enormous. Dilapidated properties drive down property values in the surrounding homes, increase the probability of crime and vagrancy, and can become potential health hazards as the buildings become decrepit and dangerous. The health and strength of Latino and African American communities in our nation is absolutely critical for a strong housing market and an equitable and long-lasting economic recovery. New homeownership will be one of the most important components in achieving stability and shared prosperity, and as Latinos are one of the fastest growing populations in the United States it is absolutely imperative that particular attention be paid to their housing struggles. Our economic recovery cannot ignore these most vulnerable communities, and a housing market and foreclosure system that fails to serve them is one that is destined for instability and possible failure. A recent report from the Center for American Progress outlines one of the most promising strategies to confront the ongoing foreclosure crisis: lowering the amount that the borrower actually owes on the loan, a process called principal reduction. Principal reduction is increasingly being recognized as one of the most effective and fiscally responsible ways to prevent unnecessary foreclosures on vulnerable populations that are at a high risk for default and foreclosure, problems that plague the Latino community. In fact, about one in four modifications on loans held by private banks include some principal reduction, according to recent data from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Principal reduction is so effective because it is the only way to restore an underwater homeowners equity while permanently lowering monthly mortgage payments. Of course, principal reduction should not be available to everyone as a general policy, but it could very well be a viable way of aiding these communities in their recovery. Currently, as a condition of their government conservatorship, the Federal Housing Finance Agency prohibits the two largest mortgage finance companies in the nation, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, from utilizing principal reductionin spite of a growing consensus that it could be extremely effective in helping communities of color, arguably the hardest hit by the housing and foreclosure crisis. Indeed, even the Federal Housing Finance Agencys own analysis points to this conclusion. Whats more, Latinos seem to be hungry for this very kind of policy from the federal government. The same Latino Decisions poll found that Latinos are generally very supportive of the government actively pursuing and implementing solutions to the housing crisis. As our nation continues to recover from the Great Recession, greater attention must be paid to the unique challenges that Latinos and other communities of color face in the housing market and action must be taken to support these communities. Policies such as principal reduction can help to strengthen and expand the middle class, which is critical to our economic stability and shared prosperity.

>Jennifer Rokosa- American Progress.
The State of Communities of Color.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is the new food and nutrition assistance federal program.

SNAP

This is the new version of the old Food Stamp Program. The state of Delaware has a different name for this program, calling it Food Supplement Program. The Program is designed so that low-income families can supplement their food budget. Although this program is of great help to low-income people along the entire country, only 77% of eligible Delaware residents receive these benefits. There is a SNAP promotion movement due to the fact that this program not only benefits low income people but also helps the economy in general. Every $5 SNAP benefit produces an increment in economic activity equivalent to $9. Besides its name, there are other things that have changed regarding this program. - There are no more Food Stamps. Now SNAPs beneficiaries receive an EBT card (Electronic Benefits Transfer) which works like a debit card in almost all point-of-purchase machines in food stores. - The minimum a person can receive per month is $16 instead of $10, previous minimum. - SNAP benefits can be used to buy unprepared food in any store that accepts it. For stores accepting SNAP benefits visit: http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/retailers/merchants.htm - efforts are being made to provide means of using SNAP benefits in Farmers Markets. -It is expected that with SNAP, low-income people will be able to buy more nutritious and healthy food without having to worry about not being able to pay other services and special expenses. There is a lot of nutritional information that can be provided along with their SNAP benefits. Qualification for SNAP benefits is based on income, family relations at home and expenses. If your income is not higher that the below limits, you are probably eligible to receive benefits. The maximum benefits you can receive are mentioned below. On average, each household receives approximately $130 in SNAP benefits per month. Visit Delawares ASSIST at https://assits.dhss.delaware.gov to apply via internet, or visit your local social services office. For the nearest office to you, call Delawares hotline 2-1-1. Celebrando a Chile
Viv all en 1983-84. Ella dijo, ests completamente loco, aqu no va a crecer nada. Celebrating Chile
Hundreds Celebrate Chiles Stellar Business Partnership with the United States and the Key that Opens All the Doors - the Ports of the Delaware River
There was a glow emanating from the Du Pont Country Club as stars in the international shipping business and political galaxies gathered for the Seventh Annual Taste of Chile Award Dinner, sponsored by the Chilean & American Chamber of Commerce. Designed to celebrate the exceptional economic and trade partnership between Chile and the Greater Philadelphia region, the dinner was an elegant, stellar tribute. Delawares United States Senator Tom Carper and Governor Jack Markell, joined Chiles new Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency, Felipe Bulnes in delivering gleaming reports on Chiles skyrocketing progress. The Chilean economic story is certainly one of the most positive success stories going on in the world today. With a tremendous growth trajectory over the last three decades, Chile is now number 17 in the world for food exports. They are rising so swiftly, theyre expected to be among the top ten exporters by 2014. Chilean produce broke the grip of Winter, making fruit available to the United States all year-round, while creating thousands of jobs from the Delaware Valley all the way to Santiago. The president of the Chilean & American Chamber of Commerce, Robert Palaima, was the evenings master of ceremonies and noted the Chamber has been a key factor in bolstering this astounding bilateral trade. In fact since 1989, the total value of Chilean imports coming through the Delaware River ports rose from $192, 020, 000 million to $966,330,000 million dollars. A stunning success. Delaware Governor Jack Markell, actually lived in Chile and spoke of the extraordinary growth and charm of the country, Chile is truly one of the greatest countries in the world. I have a particular affection for Chile. I lived there in 1983-84. I was working for an American bank that had an office there. I lived and worked in Santiago but got to travel mainly in the south which is absolutely spectac-

event was one of his first official stops. He talked about why the bonds between Chile and the U-S are so strong and complimented the Chilean & American Chamber, I want to thank the Chamber, it is the largest Chilean-American Chamber we have and is the most active and a key player in promoting the relationship between our two countries. The trade balance between the Delaware Valley region is approximately one billion dollars and thats a huge amount for Chilean standards. We are happy to supply fruits during your winter season and take advantage of the reverse growing season and happy to sustain two thousand direct jobs and ten thousand in-direct jobs in your region. And thanks to your efficiency, capabilities and commitment to Chilean exports, you are sustaining one hundred thousand jobs in Chile. Fresh off the train from the nations capitol, Delawares United States Senator Tom Carper said, Our relationship with Chile has born great fruit, for Chile and not just for those of us in Delaware Valley Region. Were happy that Chile is our valued customer and were happy to be your servant. And so glad to see all of you here tonight. As a recovering governor, I love economic development and job creation. Its one of my most favorite things in the world. The Chambers 2012 Visionary Award went to Rene Merino, the managing director and owner of the Casa Tamaya Winery. Together, The Wines of Chile and Casa Tamaya decanted an impressive array of Chiles finest wines throughout the evening. While accepting the award, Merino noted, We have people thinking premium now, when they think of Chilean wines. We believe we have the best geography, the best climate, conditions, the best of everything to produce the finest wines in the world. We have also proven it many times in blind taste-tests and competitions. Weve been able to beat some of the most expensive wines in the world many, many times. And we always over-deliver. Thats what Chiles all about. Governor Markell and I were talking about Tamaya Winery and Ive asked him to visit us in the north. We are right at the entrance of the desert and the first time my wife and I went there was nothing there. It was just barren land. She said, youre absolutely crazy, nothings going to grow here. And today we have an amazing winery making wines that rival the worlds finest in competitions all over the world. The outstanding imported wines were part of an exquisite dinner made of foods imported from Chile. In addition to the remarkable Tamaya Cabernet Sauvignon and others, there was also delicious AquaChile Verlasso salmon, farm raised in Chile. It was absolutely delightful and is the result of a joint research and development effort between the Du Pont Company of the United States and the Republic of Chile. Ricardo Maldonado, the Executive Director of the Chilean & American Chamber of Commerce said, It is fitting that the evenings award is called Visionary because in fact, everyone at the dinner has that characteristic in common. All of the national and international companies represented, the workers and staff of the Ports of the Delaware River, the Chilean and American Chamber of Commerce and the government officials of Chile and the United States are all participating in a real-life dream-come-true. A remarkable story of vision, dedication, partnership and amazing progress.

ular. I hear the north is also and look forward to visiting there. Chile is a beautiful country, the people are incredible, the progress that the economy has made over the last 30 years is phenomenal. And to visit as Alan Levin, Delawares Economic Development Director, Gene Bailey and Tom Keefer, from the Port and Ben Leavenworth, the Honorary Consul, we went back in August. We went to sign an extension of an agreement between the Port of Wilmington and many of the fruit exporters and growers in Chile. In her introduction of Ambassador Bulnes, Anne Bookout, Vice President and General Counsel of Royal Fumigation told the gathering of His Excellencys time spent in the United States. He has an LL.M from Harvard Law School, was a Fulbright Scholar, and also served Chile as both Minister of Justice and again, as Minister of Education. Ambassador Bulnes only just arrived in the States in the last couple of weeks, but made sure the

$1 Million Award
$1 Million Award Access to Affordable, Quality Health Care
Two years after the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, Sens. Tom Carper, Chris Coons and Rep. John Carney (all D-Del.) announced over $1 million in federal funding for Westside Family Health Center as part of the Affordable Care Acts investment in federally-qualified community health centers to expand access to health care services while reducing costs. This particular award will help Westside Family Healthcare expand its buildings and improve services to provide more primary and preventive health services to Delawareans. Overall, this funding from the Affordable Care Act will expand health care services to an additional 860,000 patients. The federal funding will enable Westside Family Healthcare Center to add dental services to its Dover facility, as well as providing for additional space for pharmacy, clinician and support staff offices. The expansion will allow create about 10 new positions at Westsides Dover location. Westside estimates that the new dental office will eventually provide care to over 2,000 patients in Dover. It is expected that the dental practice will grow rapidly due to current lack of access to dental services in Kent County. In order to strengthen our health care system, we must keep people as healthy as possible and prevent them from becoming sick in the first place, said Sen. Carper. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, this investment in Westside Family Healthcare and other community health centers throughout the nation will greatly reduce the number of Delawareans and other Americans from suffering from common, costly - and often preventable - diseases which, in turn, will reduce our countrys health care costs. Everyone should have access to quality, affordable health care and this much-deserved and much-needed award will aid Westside in its commitment to the health and wellbeing of Delawareans, regardless of their income levels. I commend the Department of Health and Human Services

for its work toward providing affordable, quality care to more patients in Delaware and throughout the nation. A major factor for the quality of life in a community is how accessible and affordable healthcare is to the residents, said Sen. Coons. The medical field is constantly making groundbreaking discoveries and developing new technologies to save lives and it is imperative that our local community health centers continue to implement these best practices and improve existing services. This award by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will allow Westside Family Healthcare to provide high-quality care to even more Delawareans of all economic levels. Access to quality, affordable healthcare is essential to communities across Delaware, said Congressman Carney. Westside Family Healthcare provides critical services for the uninsured and underserved in our state. During my years in public service, Ive seen firsthand how Westsides dedicated team delivers essential healthcare to those who need it most. Im pleased that Westside has received this grant, enabling it to expand its services to even more Delawareans. Moving forward, I will continue supporting the great work of all our community health centers. The greater Kent County community has long been underserved in the area of oral health access, especially for those who are uninsured or underinsured, said Lolita A. Lopez, FACHE, President & Chief Executive Officer of Westside Family Healthcare. We are excited at the opportunity to bring much needed oral health care services to this community as we continue to expand access to primary and preventative care in an effort to improve the health and well being of those in need.

The Dream Machine

PepsiCos Dream Machine celebrates two years of environmental achievements
K-12 schools and students help make green dreams come true The Dream Machine recycling initiative launched by PepsiCo on Earth Day in 2010 focuses on introducing recycling kiosks and bins at hightraffic, public locations around the country to help increase the U.S. beverage container recycling rate by giving Americans convenient access to recycling receptacles. In two years, over 4,000 Dream Machine bins and kiosks, computerized receptacles that allow consumers to earn points for each container recycled and redeem them with rewards partner Greenopolis, have been placed across the country. PepsiCo has diverted nearly 94 million plastic bottles & aluminum cans from landfills as a result of the Dream Machine Program thats more than the combined populations of California, Texas, New York, Georgia, Delaware, North Dakota and South Dakota. Schools participating in the Dream Machine Recycle Rally earn points for every non-alcoholic aluminum can or plastic bottle collected through the program year-round, and schools can redeem those points with local businesses and major retailers for rewards such as sporting goods, electronics, gift cards, educational events, and music, books and videos. Schools with the highest number of bottles and cans collected are eligible to win a $50,000 Dream Green School Makeover. Currently, more than 400,000 students from 900 schools in 32 states are participating in the Dream Machine Recycle Rally program. In the two years since its introduction, Dream Machine Recycle Rally has awarded $335,000 to schools for green improvements and $135,995 in additional rewards. The Dream Machine recycling initiative not only positively impacts the environment by diverting bottles and cans from entering landfills, it benefits veterans through PepsiCos partnership with the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV), a national program offering career training, education and job creation for post-9/11 U.S. veterans with disabilities resulting from their military service. Through the Dream Machine recycling initiative, PepsiCo has contributed $500,000 per year to the EBV. For every 10 million pounds of recycled material collected, PepsiCo will contribute an additional $250,000 to EBV. To find a dream machine near you, visit http://dreammachinelocator.com. Social Security Questions and Answers

Question: How many Social Security numbers have been issued since the program started? Answer: Since 1935, we have assigned more than 465 million Social Security numbers and each year we assign about 5.5 million new numbers. With approximately 1 billion combinations of the 9-digit Social Security number, the current system will provide us with enough new numbers for several generations into the future. To learn more about Social Security numbers and cards, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10002.html. Question: How do I change my citizenship status on my Social Security record? Answer: TTo change the citizenship shown on our records you need to: Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5), available at www.socialsecurity. gov/ssnumber/ss5.htm; and Show us documents proving your: Age; Identity; and New or revised citizenship status (We only accept certain documents as proof of citizenship. These include your U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a Certificate of Citizenship. If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security will ask to see your current immigration documents.) Take (or mail) your completed application and documents to your local Social Security office. All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. For more information, visit www.socialsecurity.gov. Question: Why doesnt my estimate using the Retirement Estimator take into account my work as a teacher? Ive worked for 20 years for the state and thought it would count. Answer: If you work for a state or local government agency including a school system, college, or university your earnings may not be covered by Social Security. If you are covered only by your state or local pension plan and you dont pay Social Security taxes, your earnings wont be shown on your Social Security record. (Your record will show your Medicare wages if you pay into that program.) For information on how your pension from noncovered state or local employment may affect the amount of your Social Security benefit, you can visit www.socialsecurity.gov/retire2/wep-chart.htm Question: I have never worked but my spouse has. What will my benefits be? Answer: As a spouse, you may be entitled to one-half of a retired workers benefit amount when you reach full retirement age. If you want to get a Social Security retirement benefit as early as age 62, the amount of your benefit is reduced. The amount of reduction depends on when you will reach full retirement age.
