THERMAL ANALYSIS OF 2D CHIMNEY

Problem Description Consider a small chimney constructed from two different materials. The inner layer is constructed from concrete with a thermal conductivity k=0.01w/mk. The outer layer of the chimney is constructed from bricks with thermal conductivity value=0.06w/mk. The temperature of the hot gases on the inside surface of the chimney is assumed to be 325K with a convective heat transfer coefficient 0.2w/m2k. The outside surface is exposed to the surrounding air which is at 250K with a convective heat transfer coefficient 0.068w/m2k Objective : Determine the temperature distribution within the concrete and within the brick layer under steady state conditions.

Convert inches to metre.(26in=0.7m,12in=0.3m,1in=.0254m) Procedure: 1. Preferences Click-thermal 2. Define the Type of Element From the Preprocessor Menu, select: Element Type > Add/Edit/Delete. solid-Quad 4 node 55 &Click on 'Close' in the 'Element Types' dialog box and close the 'Element Type' menu. 3. MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Preprocessor>Material Props>Material Models. Click In the window that comes up choose Thermal>Conductivity>Isotropic Enter 1 for the Material Property Number and click OK Fill in .01 for Thermal conductivity. Click OK. This represents the material properties for concrete. Repeat the above steps to create material properties for bricks (k=0.06, Material number 2), Do this by selecting Material>New Model in the Define Material Model Behavior window. Once finished, exit the material model window. 4. Modeling the structure To create Brick cross section a) In the main menu, Preprocessor-modeling-create-areas-rectangles by 2 corners, specify the coordinates as (0, 0) & (0.7,0 .7) b) Using the similar options, create another rectangle using (0.15, 0.15) & (0.355,0 .355) coordinates c) Using operate- Booleans-subtract, subtract the two areas To create Concrete cross section a) In the main menu, Preprocessor-modeling-create-areas-rectangles by 2 corners, specify the coordinates as (0.15, 0.15) & (0.355, 0.355). b) Using the similar options, create another rectangle using the coordinates (0.18, 0.18) & (0.304, 0.304). c) Using operate- Booleans-subtract, subtract the two areas d) Glue the two areas, using PreProcessor- operate>Booleans>Glue>Areas and click pickall. 5 MESHING Preprocessor>Meshing>Size Controls>Global Size> In the menu that comes up type 0.01 in the field for 'Element Edge length'. Click on OK First we will mesh the brick. Preprocessor>Meshing>Mesh Attributes>Default Attributes. Make sure the window indicates "Material Ref.#1". Preprocessor>Meshing>Mesh>areas>Free. Pick the brick area and click OK. To reveal the other area, use Utility - menu>Plot>Areas. Repeat the same process for the concrete area. However, change one thing: For the concrete area, change the mess size to .005 6. BOUNDARY CONDITIONS AND CONSTRAINTS Apply the convective boundary conditions Preprocessor>Loads>Define Loads>Apply>Thermal>Convection>On Lines Pick the four inner lines (convective lines of concreter) and enter 0.2 for "Film Coefficient" and 325for "Bulk Temperature" and click OK. Also Pick the four exterior lines of Brick layer and enter 0.068 for "Film Coefficient" and 250 for "Bulk Temperature" and click OK. SOLUTION Go to ANSYS Main Menu>Solution>Analysis Type>New Analysis. Select Steady State and click on OK. Go to Solution>Solve>Current LS. POST-PROCESSING General Postprocessing>Plot Results>Contour Plot>Nodal Solution. Select DOF solution and Temperature to be plotted and click OK. Result

For the Thermal Analysis of 2Dimensional Chimney. the maximum temperature was found to be 320K
