Golden State offers free water-efficiency kits

In honor of Water Awareness Month, Golden State Water Company is offering its customers free outdoor water-efficiency kits throughout the month of May to encourage water conservation. Outdoor watering can account for more than 60 percent of total residential water usage, according to a Golden State Water news release. One of the best ways to protect this resource is through water-efficiency awareness. The free outdoor kit includes drip irrigation and a hose nozzle. Drip irrigation uses water efficiently and loses practically no water to runoff or evaporation. The hose spray nozzle automatically shuts off when not in use so people use water only when it is needed. Customers must visit www.gswater.com to fill out an online form to receive the kit in the mail. It may take 3 to 6 weeks for delivery.

the board should find a superintendent who can offer a sufficient balance between top-down management and a collaborative approach to working with teachers, paying particular attention to the restrictiveness of the No Child Left Behind Act. There is no magic bullet, Mr. Nemer said, and no justification for rejecting teachers collective strengths, experience and judgment. The art of teaching should be valued and not crowded out by standardization and micromanagement. Please choose a superintendent who understands that. Mr. Nemer also noted that the balance between topdown ideas and consideration of teachers classroom perspectives in the district has deteriorated in recent years. Before going into closed session, Board Member Steven Llanusa expressed concern that not enough time was given to review documents relating to the superintendent hire. The unnamed document was a 19-page email attachment that Mr. Llanusa indicated was received at 2 p.m. on Thursday. My comment relates to due diligence, Mr. Llanusa said. I cannot do justice to an item pertaining to something this important without enough time. Board President Jeff Stark remarked that the informa-

CUSD board makes tentative superintendent hire

he Claremont Unified School District board announced the tentative selection of James Elsasser, EdD, as the districts new superintendent in a press release published on the CUSD website yesterday, Friday, May 4.
The board will take action at a future regular meeting pending a successful CUSD site visit and contract negotiation, the press release stated. BOARD Mr. Elsasser received his bachelors degree in music education from Azusa Pacific University (APU), a masters in education from APU and his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Southern California. Hailing from the Anaheim City School District, whose 24 schools serve 19,300 kindergarten through 6th grade students, Mr. Elsasser was assistant superintendent of human resources, overseeing more than 1,700 employees. ACSD has an annual $176 million operating budget. At the Thursday, May 3 board meeting, David Nemer addressed the board in public comment, emphasizing that

tion was forwarded as soon as it was received and that all board members were allotted the same time frame to review the email. There was no further discussion on the matter before the board recessed into closed session. Mr. Elsasser joined ACSD in the 2008-2009 school year, relocating from the Los Alamitos School District where he was director of classified personnel and special projects. He was previously principal of Oak Middle School in the same district. Prior to joining Los Alamitos, Mr. Elsasser was a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Downey Unified School District. Board Vice President Mary Caenepeel stated in the press release that, Jim has had a wide range of professional experiences in human resources, finance and highly effective learning instruction. He has a leadership style that will work well for Claremont. CUSD has roughly 6,900 kindergarten through 12th grade students, with 8 elementary schools one middle school and 2 high schools. CUSD has 669 employees and an annual budget of $55.7 million. More information on the superintendent will be published when it becomes available.

Thorny issues on Claremont council agenda Tuesday

wo ongoing hot-button topics for the city of Claremontpolice unions and the Wilderness Parkare on the agenda for Claremont City Council Tuesday night, May 8. The discussion begins at 6:30 p.m.

After months of back-and-forth debate, impasse and failed contracts, the council will meet to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Claremont Police Officers Association (CPOA). The potential approval comes nearly 6 months after other employee unions were able to make an agreement. The council originally proposed the same contract as other employee groups, which would have the officers paying their full Public Retirement System (PERS) contribution in 3 years time, but police repeatedly rejected the offer because of the low Cost of Living Adjust-

ment (COLA). Because of past pay reductions and the intensity of their jobs, police felt a higher CITY COLA was warranted. COUNCIL Last month, after a long impasse, the city presented the police with an offer including a slightly higher COLA than that given to other employee groups. In an unexpected turn for CPOA President Detective Rick Varney and members of the negotiating team, the CPOAs general membership rejected the contract by one vote, 19 to 18. The city presented another alternative to the CPOA soon after, this time with a work-related equipment reimbursement of up to $400 annually for 40 employees. The cost is estimated at $16,000 over the contract period. CPOA members approved the new offer with only 4 opposing in a vote finalized Wednesday morning, according to Det. Varney. Were ready to move on, he said. The final say rests with the council, who will vote on whether or not to ap-

prove the memorandum of understanding. According to the report, the proposed CPOA contract will cost the city $435,352 with a total savings projected at $746,914. Savings were calculated based on employees taking over the responsibility of paying the PERS contribution, previously paid for by the city. If the CPOA contract is approved, the Claremont Police Management Association (CPMA) will be the only Claremont employee group without an agreed-upon contract. In addition to the CPOA contract, the council will once again revisit the issue of expanding parking at the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park. In late March, the Claremont City Council approved the construction of a new lot near the Wilderness Park entrance on North Mills Avenue. The council is now being asked to vote on expanded parking to be constructed on the west side of Mills Avenue, north of the fire station and south of Mt. Baldy Road. The lot would hold an estimated 46 addi-

tional parking spaces and be subject to the same paid-parking policy implemented with the previous lot: $3 a day for both Claremont residents and nonresidents, with the option of a $50 annual pass. Other items being reviewed by the council include whether or not to maintain the Community and Human Services Departments decision to leave the name of Cahuilla Park as it is written, as well as the relinquishing agreement with Caltrans for ownership of Claremonts portion of Foothill Boulevard. Labor negotiations with the CPOA and CPMA will take place in closed session prior to the general meeting, which is open to the public. Closed session begins at 5:15 p.m., with a brief period for public comment beforehand. The council will reconvene for the regular open session at 6:30 p.m. The full meeting agenda can be accessed on the citys website at www.ci.claremont.ca.us.

Funds needed to complete Gold Line project to Claremont

he Gold Line Construction Authority is calling on California state legislators to help bridge a $764 million funding gap that, if filled, will bring the estimated 24-mile light rail from Azusa to Claremont and beyond.
Resources needed to fund the Pasadena-to-Azusa segmentan estimated $810 million of the total $1.574 billion of the projecthave already been allocated through Measure R funds, approved in 2008. Through Measure R, $40 billion was designated to fund critical highway and transportation projects throughout the county over the following 30 years. While Measure R funds sufficiently cover the first portion of the Gold Line extension, not enough remains for the second Azusa-to-Claremont portion of the project.

The additional funds needed to complete the rail through Montclair will be a separate deal, according to a Construction Authority news release. Board members anticipate the additional funding would be needed starting in 2016, on completion of the Pasadena-to-Azusa segment currently set for 2015. The Construction Authority met last week to create an updated expenditure plan needed to help identify a solution. The State Legislature required the construction authorities receiving Measure R funds to prepare an expenditure plan to complete their capital projects, said Construction Authority Board Chairman and Glendora Councilman Doug Tessitor. It is important to recognize that the voters approved the project to Claremont, but Measure R allocates enough funding to complete the project only to Azusa. The expenditure plan allows a complete estimate of what funding is needed to complete the project.

After approval from the board last week, the expenditure plan, which includes a timeline and projected budget, will now be sent to Metro for its use in preparing a county-wide expenditure plan for Measure R. The board remains optimistic that additional funds will be sent to the Construction Authority for project completion. Authority board members, including Construction Authority Chairman and Claremont City Councilmember Sam Pedroza, met with the San Gabriel Valley Caucus in Sacramento last week to provide an update on the progress of the 23-mile light rail and ask for support. We were there to push awareness, and it was very well received, Mr. Pedroza said. Its important to remind Metro that, although the Gold Line is listed in Measure R all the way to Claremont, the funding doesnt match.

Exquisite Buddhist scroll wont see light of day again

gold leaf and deer musk scroll created by an artist designated as a Korean National Treasure was recently sealed inside a statue of the Buddha during a special private ceremony at Claremont Lincoln University (CLU), a new, inter-religious graduate school.
While the scroll will never again see the light of day, the public is invited to see the statue, which was donated to CLU by the publisher of US Modern Buddhism Magazine, Hyung Keun Kim, to honor the universitys new model for the desegregation of religious higher education. The community is especially encouraged to visit CLU and the Buddha statue tomorrow, Sunday, May 6, during the universitys Buddha Jayanti 2012 celebration, an event honoring the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha. The Buddha Jayanti event will include numerous festivities, all free-of-charge, including a short film about Buddha, a presentation about his life and birthplace in Nepal, special Bhajans (devotional songs), cultural dances and other performances, prayers, an exhibit of Buddhist artifacts, ritual objects and books and a vegetarian dinner (also no cost). It was in November 2011 that the Buddhist statue was donated to CLU by Mr. Hyung Keun Kim, an occasion that included a special ceremony hosted by the Korea Project of the Center for Process Studies. Following its donation, Mr. Kim then commissioned Kyeong Ho Kim of Seoul to create an intricate Buddhist scroll to be placedand sealedin the statue. POLICE BLOTTER
Wednesday, April 25 The Mt. Baldy Road car burglary toll keeps mounting, this time with more than $4000 taken from a single vehicle. The incident took place near Evey Canyon between 4:15 and 6 p.m. The burglar entered the Dodge Ram pickup truck by shattering the rear passenger window. A pair of $2000 binoculars, tools and stereo system including speakers were stolen. There are no suspects at this time. Thursday, April 26 A couple of crooks chose the wrong time to attempt auto burglary in the rear alley of a complex in the 500 block of Towne Avenue. A Claremont D.A.R.E. officer happened to be on the Foothill Country Day campus for a D.A.R.E. class, adjacent to where the men were breaking into the car. When they saw the officer they attempted to flee, but the Claremont police were able to set up a perimeter around the area and located them. Francisco Villa, 37, of Pomona, and David Ramos, 19, of Diamond Bar, were arrested for attempting to steal a car and an additional count of obstructing an officer bu running. Friday, April 27 Bragging got an El Roble student in trouble with police Tuesday afternoon. The 14-year-old male was called in by administration after word that he was boasting about his plan to smoke marijuana after school. A search of the boy revealed a bag of marijuana in his jeans. He was given a citation for possession of the drug on school grounds. ***** A morning burglary scheme in the 2200 block of La Paz Drive ended with 3 men in jail. Witnesses say the men were going door-to-door in what is suspected to be an attempt to identify if the occupants were home. One witness claimed he answered his front door and one of the men asked to check out his backyard for a dog that had gotten loose. The witness suspected the lie and refused, instead calling police. Other witnesses saw the men jump into one of the backyards. Investigation later revealed the men had attempted to enter the home through the back door, but were unsuccessful, according to Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen. Claremont police located the men in a Dodge Stratus on Base Line Road, west of Indian Hill Boulevard. Jerome McWilliams, 20, of Victorville, Lester Powe, 18, of Rialto, and Darnell Batts, 24, of Colton, were arrested for attempted burglary and conspiracy. A subsequent search of one of their homes revealed a stolen firearm from a residential burglary in Rialto. Upon further investigation a count of gang en-

hancement was also added. Saturday, April 28 A homeowner in the 1400 block of Marjorie Avenue received a shock when he awoke Saturday morning to find a stranger peering through his back door. The stranger claimed he was looking for his friend Tracy, but the homeowner believed the man was attempting to break into his house. Claremont police arrived, and arrested Nathan Riddle, 27, of Montclair for trespassing. ***** A man attempting to get into his car parked in the 400 block of Georgia Court was beaten to the punch. When he arrived at the car, there was already someone sitting in the drivers seat. The car owner slapped his hand against the windshield in an attempt to startle the man, who had entered the unlocked vehicle without permission. The stranger got out of the car and began to run. Police have been unable to locate the man, last seen going west on Vista Avenue. He is described as a male Hispanic with short-cropped dark hair in his early 20s, standing about 5 foot 7 inches tall and weighing 155 pounds . Sunday, April 29 Arson is suspected in 2 Claremont field fires that arose Sunday afternoon. Police and firefighters arrived at a field north of Oak Park Cemetery around 1:30 p.m. after being notified of the flames, in both the northwest corner and middle of the field. Both were extinguished without

damage to nearby property. Police found an empty lighter fluid bottle near the scene. A Los Angeles County arson investigator was called and investigation continues. There are no suspects at this time. Tuesday, May 1 A frightened man was arrested Tuesday morning after fleeing from police, who attempted to contact him near Foothill Boulevard and Sumner Avenue. Police caught the man, who says that he ran because police had scared him. He claims he had been hiding all day from a group of men threatening to kill him. The 27-yearold Claremont resident was arrested for obstructing an officer. ***** A man dining at a local eatery was left disheveled, and behind bars, after attempting to flee the location Sunday night. An employee of Heroes Restaurant, 131 Yale Avenue, contacted police around 6 p.m. about a man found vandalizing the business. The man took off, with another Heroes employee in pursuit. In the middle of the chase, the perpetrator ripped his pants when attempting to jump over a fence. Police stopped Timothy Crawley, 29, of San Francisco, near Indian Hill Boulevard. Though the Heroes employees did not wish to press charges, Mr. Crawley was arrested for being drunk in public.

Theatre project, student progress dominate board discussion

USD has awarded the contract to renovate the Claremont High School Theatre to Paul C. Miller Construction, with work expected to begin soon after classes end this June. The news, 3 years in the making, was greeted with applause at the Thursday, May 3 meeting of the Claremont Unified School District Board of Education. The $3 million project will include CUSD bare-bones renovations as well as much-needed roof repair. Should BOARD
more money become available for the project in the future, CUSD has priced out other needs like improved seating and electrical upgrades. Paul C. Miller Construction comes with high recommendations for its work on schools in nearby districts like Etiwanda, Fontana and Chino. The go-ahead comes in the nick of time. The $1.5 million matching fund grant was awarded to CHS for the Theatre Renovation Project 3 years ago, and would have expired on June 30 if the amount remained unmatched. In the past few years, theatre boosters have rallied to get matching funds together, ultimately raising $300,000. Despite their best efforts, the renovation faced a gap of $1.2 million when the school board recently stepped in with a $1.5 million bridge loan. Honorable efforts, deplorable funding After a brief closed session, the board reconvened, commencing a period of recognition for outstanding students and programs. In the outstanding student category, CHS soccer goalie Sam Newton was honored for winning Sierra League Player of the Year, Division 2. Coach Fred Bruce-Oliver, head boys varsity soccer coach, lauded Sam, who had 14 shutouts this season,
GOLDLINE continued from the previous page

for his team leadership. Your goalkeeper is your second coach on the field. When you have a keeper like [Sam], you always have a chance, he said. Sam, who announced that hes heading to the University of California, Davis next year, brought his grandmother and father to the board meeting. He gave most of the credit for his on-the-field achievements to coach Bruce-Oliver. Hes the best coach in all of Californiaand in the country, if Id have my say, said Sam, who called the Player of the Year title humbling. Recognition also went to the students and staff of the AVID (Advancement Through Individual Determination) program at Claremont High School, which seeks to help students at mid-levels of academic achievement prepare for college success. Also included was San Antonio High School, which has been selected as a Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education. San Antonio High School student TeVin Woods took a moment to attest to the strengths of the school. Its small, I get interaction with my teachers and Ive learned a lot, Tevin said. I bloomed at San Antonio. I decided what I wanted to do, what college I want to go to. Another public comment period saw Elizabeth Harris-Gifford, the parent of a Sumner Elementary School first grader, invite the board and community to a celebration held yesterday to mark the fact that the school has been designated a California Distinguished School. Its an amazing place, and we all add to it, she said of Sumner. Then it was onto presentations by Principal Brett OConnor of CHS and Principal Stacey Stewart of Oakmont Elementary School. Principal OConnor gave a report on how the school is looking to raise student achievement. Students with Ds and Fs have been improving since the introduction of a mandatory Office Hours intervention, he noted.

These at-risk students are matched with teachers for 20 minutes 4 days a week in order to address problem subjects. Other moves aimed at student success include a change in which standardized testing takes place in classrooms as opposed to in the gym. Data has shown that students test better in a smaller setting and with a known teacher present, said Principal OConnor. If benchmark testing is any indication, Oakmont students are looking good as they approach next weeks STAR testing. Benchmark testing is used to predict how students will do on standardized tests. Ms. Stewart was pleased to announce her school has exceeded district benchmark indicators for math by 10 percent and those for English language arts by 20 percent. Were pumped, Ms. Stewart said of the impending tests. Nervous, but pumped. Board members congratulated Ms. Stewart, who is in her first year as principal of Oakmont, for her infectious enthusiasm and organization. The fact that [Oakmont] concentrates on the whole child is very Claremont, said Jeff Stark, president of the CUSD board. Next up, Lisa Shoemaker, assistant superintendent of business services, presented a compelling case for the board to be allowed to borrow money from various district accounts to supplement the general fund. Not a month goes by in which the state does not defer the payment of allotted general funds by a month or even a year, Ms. Shoemaker said. This leaves the district unable to perform basic functions like paying staffers. In what all agreed is a sad turn of affairs, such interfund shuffling has become routine. This is like working for a month but getting paid next month, or [being told], Well pay you next year, Mr. Stark said. Its stupid. Were appalled. I hope you are as well and will let your elected officials know.

ne proposal up for discussion, through Assembly Bill 1446, is to continue Measure Rs half-cent sales tax indefinitely. Currently, Measure R will sunset in 2039. We are supportive as long as it does include the funding for phase 2b [Azusa to Claremont], Mr. Pedroza said. While concerned with the continued half-cent sales tax, and calling for more clarification on what projects will be funded, members of the caucus urged Metro to include the Azusa-to-Claremont portion in Measure R funding, as stated in a letter of support from Senators Ed Hernandez and Bob Huff of the San Gabriel Valley Caucus last week. There is no ambiguity in the state legislation that put Measure R to the voters. For this reason, we respectfully request that Metro incorporate the Construction Authoritys approved expenditure plan into Metros expenditure plan, along with the correct project definition (Pasadena to Claremont), the letter states. If goals are met according to the current timeline, an estimated completion date for the Gold Line Foothill Extension is set for 2021. The date is subject to change depending on the ease of locating the remaining funds, according to Mr. Pedroza. It definitely ties our hands in terms of finding the funding to construct, Mr. Pedroza said. There is enough funding available to finish the environmental [review] document and even to do some of the plans, but we definitely need to go after funding for the additional construction. With continued support from legislators and others throughout the Foothills, the Construction Authority re-

Who is our neighbor?

by John PIxley

ur neighborhood is our family. We take care of our own. All of those things are about being a good neighbor. Its important not just locally but globally. Very nice, but what I want to know is who, exactly, is our own?

observer
with living in Claremont. The first quote was in an article about, yes, an elderly woman. The womans house in Claremont had burned down, and the article was about how the people, yes, next door and down the street, had rescued her and were helping her begin to put her life back together. In the second story, which was actually one of a series of COURIER features on good neighbors and focused on a Claremont couple, the woman quoted is known for her volunteer work as the local and state president of the League of Women Voters and with many other organizations. The article pointed out that she has sought to extend goodwill far beyond the boundaries of Claremont. Her husband is also quoted in the article, remembering that his mother always had someone from the poor house having a sandwich or a cup of coffee on the back steps. Again, who is our own? Is it the strangeror the person always there acting strangelyon the street who asks us for food? It doesnt sound like the people who showed up on the back steps were distant cousins or friends down on their luck. It doesnt sound like the woman seeks out people she knows in reaching far beyond the boundaries of Claremont. Or what if the people in the burning house were known for having loud parties or for domestic disputes?

Is our own the elderly woman who has lived next door for years? What about the young man, maybe of another color or with another first language, who lives on the other side of town? Is he one of our own? Or what about someone who lives in another town? Just how local is our own? Or can it be, at least to some extent, more global?? I have been thinking about these questions since reading these quotes a few weeks ago. The interesting thing about these quoteswhy I keep thinking about themis that they werent in the Los Angeles Times or on some television program talking about living someplace. They were both in these pagesin the same edition of the COURIER, in factand they both had to do

Would the people next door and down the street be so eager to help out in the aftermath of the fire? Of course, we want to take care of our own. We should take care of our own. It is, of course, something to be cheered, if not expected, that the people next door and down the street assisted the elderly woman who they saw as our own. But we need to ask the question about who our own is. We need to ask this question, because our own implies that there is someone who is not our own. It implies that there is an other. And it is all too easy to see this other as someone dangerous, someone who needs to be guarded against, someone who has to be fought off, suppressed, even destroyed. It is so easy for people to be seen as not our own and feared, whether they are women who want access to abortions and contraception, or a young blackor whiteman walking down the street wearing a hooded sweatshirt, or same-sex couples wanting to marry, or illegal immigrants. We are challenged to look at this and to ask the question about who our own is by the Occupy Claremont activists. Although, at least for the time being, they are not camping out, they are asking us in Claremont to think about not only those foreclosed upon and with other financial hardships but also the homeless and how we deal with them. This was also a challenge put forth by Chief Oren Lyons, a spiritual leader of the native peoples of North America, when he spoke a couple weeks ago at Scripps College. Several times, he stated, Freedom is responsibility. Yes, we are free to live as we want and be who we are, but this privilege requires that we let others live as they want and be who they are. The privilege of freedom means that we are not subject to any power, but it also means that we are responsible for one another as well as ourselves. This is because, with freedom, we are the power. But this only works when we are open and accountable to each other, seeing everyone as our own, and not closed off in fear.

On April 6, 2012, another ceremony was held, this time a small, private gathering for the scrolls insertion into the statue, an act performed by the artist himself, who came from Seoul for the momentous occasion. The scroll text, which begins Most Merciful Bodhisattva, was written on a narrow, 4.5-meter rice-paper scroll with a hand-made metal pen holding an ink mixture of gold leaf and deer musk. The work must be performed in a very hot room95 degrees Fahrenheitto prevent the ink from drying too rapidly. It took the master scribe 3 months to complete the scroll. After carefully showing guests the scroll, the artist then re-rolled it, placed it

in the base of the statue and sealed it inside with plaster. It is in the spirit of the Buddhist teaching of non-attachment that such an intricate, masterful piece of art that took months of detailed work to create will never again be seen. Claremont Lincoln Universitys affiliation with Buddhism travels down other paths as well, including their recent collaborative agreement with University of the West (UWest), which was founded at Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights in 1991 as Hsi Lai University. UWests campus is now in Rosemead, and its collaboration with CLU means that, beginning this fall, each institutions graduate students will take courses at either university for academic credit. At the heart of Claremont Lincolns mission lies the idea of building bridges of understanding for the purposes of improving and repairing our shared society, environment and the world, said CLU President Jerry Campbell. Close-up of the Buddhist statue that
holds the scroll by Korean artist Kyeong Ho Kim on display at Claremont Lincoln University.

"The University of the West is equally excited about the agreement," said UWest President C.S. Wu. "Our mission is to provide a whole-person education in a context informed by Buddhist values such as compassion, interdependence and liberation from suffering, and to facilitate cultural understanding and appreciation between East and West. We see our relationship with Claremont Lincoln as a unique opportunity to enhance and extend that global and inclusive mission." For more information about this partnership, visit www.uwest.edu. Joann M. Lamb
Advocate for peace, justice and woman leadership
Pilgrim Place resident Joann Marie Vermeersch Lamb died on April 26, 2012. Mrs. Lambs activist-oriented life came to an end after weeks of declining health from pneumonia and further complications. With the passing of this loving and multisplendored lady, Pilgrim Place has lost another one of its much-cherished and admired women, said Jim Lamb, her husband of 51 years. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. Lamb graduated from the Jesuit University in her hometown after rejecting a modeling career. She then completed Detroits Police Academy training. As a plainclothes policewoman, she served in one of the only 2 police divisions in the country headed by women at that time. Mrs. Lambs responsibilities, while attending law school in the evenings, included involvement with the realities of women and children who often lived in violent circumstances, and preparing cases for district attorneys. Several years after combining work and school in this manner, Mrs. Lamb joined a Christian womens international movement called the Grail and served in several American cities. Her work included offering courses in underprivileged areas that promoted womens self-esteem and leadership skills. Later, in the New York area, she staffed Grail educational programs with international university students. Mrs. Lamb met her future husband, Jim Lamb, at the Grails New York City center. After marriage she joined him in preparing professional people who were willing to volunteer for service in developing countries without compensation. The Lambs 3 childrenChristopher, Paul and Nicolewere all born in the US during the 1960s. With Mr. Lamb having already volunteered in Latin America, they eventually settled in Cuernavaca, Mexico as program directors for a Christian ecumenical center. There, they introduced visiting

She also organized, with a present Pilgrim Place friend, Pat Hynds, a citywide coalition that succeeded in getting the city to ban sweatshop merchandise. During her 10 years at Pilgrim Place, Mrs. Lamb was deeply involved in the senior communitys spiritual development and liturgical initiatives as well as numerous local peace and justice programs and the Occupy Movement. She had also been a mentor in the Napier programs at Pilgrim Place and participated in the pioneer intergenerational course on social responsibility careers at the Claremont Colleges. After a tough season, CHS teams advance to CIF playoffs

t was heartbreak time for 3 members of the Claremont High School boys varsity tennis team, who fell to Ayala after advancing to the finals in Sierra League competition on Wednesday, May 2 at The Claremont Club.
The Wolfpacks loss in singles competition came after a nearly 3-hour grudge match between CHS junior Alan Leahy and Ayalas Tomas Aranguiz. Tomas also knocked out CHS sophomore Brandon Yeoh during semi-finals earlier in the day. The contest (7-5, 5-7, 2-6) turned in Ayalas favor in the third set, when cramping muscles cramped Alans cross-court style and Tomas capitalized on an end-game burst of energy. It was actually a bit emotional. [Alans] heart was really invested in it, head coach Louise Miclat said. It was hard to see him lose, but he gave it his all. He played like a champion out there. Alan (3-0 in league) should find consolation in his recent selection as Sierra League MVP. He also remains very much in the game. As the leagues second-place singles player, he will go on to compete for a CIF Individual title on Friday, May 18. After taking third place in a consolation round, Brandon Yeoh will be Alans alternate. Joining Alan at CIF-Southern Section Individual playoffs will be the CHS doubles team of Carter Hafif and

Joshua Yu. After winning a semifinals match against South Hills and then losing in the finals to Erik Martinez and Lyle Regalado of Ayala (6-0, 6-2), the boys are the leagues second-place doubles team. If they want to get CIF wins, the Wolfpack will have to tap into all of their re-

sources, coach Miclat said. Its about upping your mental game. Players focus too often on the things theyre doing wrong, she noted. Her advice? Instead of focusing on what you should be doing, focus on what youre doing right, coach Miclat suggested. Youve got to say, Im doing this well. Im going to keep at it. The team as a whole heads as Sierra

League champs to CIF Team playoffs on Wednesday, May 9. Coach Miclats goal is for the teamwhich stalled last year in the second roundto advance at least one more round this time. She believes in fostering incremental improvements, and celebrates the little steps. Its really tough to change a game in one season. Tennis is a big development gamethats why people start playing when theyre 6, she said. You can play for 12 years and still not be as good as you want to be. The players give much of the credit for their league championship to coach Miclat, who is in her first year helming the boys varsity tennis team. Though she feels shes too soft on the team, her student athletes say she is a stickler for rig-

orous conditioning, which has paid off in spades. Her motivation helped me get through some tough matches this year. It was good for me, Alan said. This is my best season Ive had in high school tennis. Boys varsity volleyball team overcomes adversity With a win against John Burroughs High School on Tuesday, May 1, the Claremont High School boys varsity volleyball team clinched a Pacific League cochampionship. The game was a dramatic one, starting with a mishap in game 1 that left setter Eran Bechor with 3 broken front teeth. His head got knocked into the floor when

he and an opponent, who were both diving for the ball, collided. Head boys volleyball coach Bernie Wendling juggled his lineup and the team rallied to take the game 25-23. The Wofpacks other setter, Lane Giammalva, took over for the rest of the match, providing 42 assists. It was kind of an amazing moment. The guys stepped up to the adversity, coach Wendling said. I was proud of them. CHS lost their second game, 21-25, and then went onto win the last 2 games 25-22 and 25-21. The victory, which took place at Burroughs in Burbank, was especially sweet

because the Indians beat Claremont at home earlier in the season. Tuesdays win was led by Stephen Zetterberg who, with 25 kills, was a beast, followed by Hunter McIntire, who had 10 kills. Coach Wendling notes that Eran, whose teeth had to be reset, is recovering nicely. The dentist did a great job. Its not the first time the CHS boys varsity volleyball team has shared a championship with Burroughs, who last year went undefeated to become solo Pacific League champs. The Pack and the Indians were also co-champions in 2010. The Wolfpack is rightfully celebrating its 6th league championship in 7 years, even taking a field trip on Thursday, May 3 to USCs brand-new Galen Center indoor arena to watch a Claremont alum play Division III volleyball. ell, class of 2010, was playing for the No. 3 seed Lewis University Flyers against the No. 2 seed USC. Lewis fell to USC. Now its back to work for the Wolfpack. The draw for CIF will be announced Saturday, May 5. The team will compete in the first round of CIF on Tuesday, May 8, with tournament play continuing on May 10, 12 and 15 and concluding on Saturday, May 19 with CIF finals to be

held at Cypress College. The farthest Claremont has advanced in CIF play is the semifinals, which they reached 2 years ago. The Wolfpack is looking to change that. Weve got to win 4 to make it to the finals. Thats our mantra, said coach Wendling. Weve got to win them one at a time. Sarah Torribio
