Criteria of choosing Hansel and Gretel

Simple and meaningful storyline Stories are an important aspect of the drama. Many works of art and most works of literature tell stories; indeed, most of the humanities involve stories. Hansel and Gretel had been chosen as the story line was simple and very meaningful. It was referred to particular elements and techniques of writing to centre the story in the action or experience of characters. Basically, storyline is a way of organizing and understanding a life using the elements of story. The purpose of this storyline is to get better understanding to know the story well and then live with greater efficiency and impact. As referred to Hansel and Gretel storyline, the flow of the story or situation itself was very simple since every member of the group had the idea about the characters to be role-playing. Not only this, the storyline was also very effective tool for our building teams. In a short period of time, each team member can share the storyline so that, the others know a back story, the aspirations and dreams. This role-playing allows us to put the life of that storyline on a map so our friends know where we were headed. The flow of the story can be very easy to divide into the characters to be role played and to arrange as well. The role player will have an idea of what they want, how much scenes will be involved or how role playing that will be allocated. With the help of the technical and experts, the group members will understand each scenario and make judgement to balance up against the other requirements. For example; is it better to cover more cases in this story or to move on to another story? By the way, there were no hard and fast rules about how to do this, as long as we break it down into demonstrable chunks. In general, if there are more than about five or six scenarios, a story can probably be broken down by grouping similar scenarios together. Essentially we have many scenarios in this story, but according the brief given we had to alter and modify the flow of the original story. Although this may seem artificial, it allows us to demonstrate progress in certain areas and gives us more situations to track with. The important thing is always to break the story out along

storylines by difference scenarios to be role played. As conclusion, a good drama in Hansel and Gretel was to have at least a good storyline that captures the person watching it and keeps their interest. If the storyline is too farfetched, extremely slow, or just not there at all then people begin to check out and eventually stop watching it. Great stories, played out on the screen can be the most captivating part of a great drama and role play as well. Second reason why we choose to this story because of the characters 1) The characters in the role-play suit the group members In the Hansel and Gretels story there are 5 character to be play, Hansel, Gretel, a wicked stepmother, an evil witch and father of Hansel and Gretel. Since there are 5 members in the group, everyone can involve and take part in the role play.

2) The characters of Hansel and Gretel are easy to play. We didnt have difficulties in role playing the character of Hansel and Gretel because the characteristic of the story are easy to understand and played. The story is about a plight of a young man and sister abandoned in the forest by their wicked stepmother. Then they are led to a little house in the forest, made of cake and candy. The house belongs to an evil witch who wishes to eat the children and they have a father. But we have change the story line where the evil witch actually have been curse and only can reveal the curse by crying tearfully. From the story line we can see that: Hansel and Gretel are poor. The stepmother hate Hansel and Gretel. The stepmother want to expel them from the house.

The stepmother was a selfish person The scene was in the jungle. The witch was not an evil but a beauty. Their father love Hansel and Gretel but have been control by their stepmother.

3) Easy to make props Since the story was about a poor family live in a jungle, we just need to find jungle backdrops to feel the scene. We either did not have trouble in choosing for the clothes in each character. For example as a witch, she must look ugly, a stoop old woman, untidy ang had a horror voice. The third reason is because of the moral value in this story. Hansel and Gretel are brother and sister. Their father is a woodcutter; they live on the edge of a forest. The stepmother of these children doesnt like them. She has asked her husband to abandon Hansel and Gretel in the deep of the forest. Woodcutter is being influenced by her wife and attempt to send the children into the deep forest. Hansel uses pebbles that shine in the moonlight and they come to their home but they did not manage to return home because being caught by the witch because Hansel and Gretel ate her candy house. The story end with the marriage of the witch and the father. We choose this story because of its moral values. First, use your intelligence whenever you are in trouble. In this story, we have highlight Hansels intelligence when he drops the pebbles along the way to forest. He thought he will use the pebbles as a guidance to return home. Not only that, the father also deal the problem wisely when he ask second chance from the witch rather than use harsh way to get his children back. We need to use our intelligence to solve every

problem in our daily life. We cannot gave up easily. This is what we are trying to deliver through the fairy tales. Then loves, love is an emotion of a strong affection and personal attachment. Love is also a virtue representing al of human kindness human kindness, compassion, and affection; and "the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another". Love may also be described as actions towards others or oneself based on compassion, or as actions towards others based on affection. Through this fairy tales, we want to show and to make audience realize that loves is an important element in our life. Loves is not limited to our parent only but we need to show love to other people. Such as the spell bind from the witch because of the love show by the father to his children. The witch are touch and transform to a beautiful lady. It means, loves can change people. Finally, do not judge the book by its cover or beauty is only skin-deep. This give meaning that the outward appearances are not as important as the inner qualities of a person. This moral are one of the reason we choose this fairy tale. It is natural for a human to judge a people through the appearance without knowing the person. Best example is the witch. We have mindset that the witch must be ugly, bad person, live alone; have power, evil and all the negative side only. While modifying this fairy tales, we want it to be different. So we change the character of witch to be a good person. It reflects to our daily life. Not all glitter is gold. We need to treat all people equally. We really hope weve touch the audience feeling and make them realize.

Props and Script

'Props' is short for 'properties', which are the physical things used on stage in drama productions, from telephones to chairs. They are thus the 'property of the drama .Story props can be anything from handy items such as balls and books to pictures and pieces of clothing. Real or symbolic Props can be actual things being t old of in the story, or can by symbols, physical metaphors used to indicate something else Manage the timing Props, when well-used, can have a powerful impact on what you are saying. However, they are 'silver bullets' in that you can only use them once, so you should think carefully and use them at the right moment. The 'hook' Pop music uses a technique called the 'hook', which is a particularly memorable sequence and which drags listeners into the music. Props can do the same for storytelling. Used well, the prop acts to ignite the imagination of the listener, bringing a sense of concrete reality into the fantasy. In this drama the props that we used are candy house made of polystyrene and PowerPoint slides. The candy house made of polystyrene was paste with the pictures of

chocolate, sweets and biscuits that we printed out. This candy house represents the witch house that Hansel and Gretel have been eaten in this story. The reason we used this kind of material it is cost effective whereby it is cheaper rather that built it using real candy and hard solid plank. Other than that it had related to the scene in this play where the children have to eat the house so the rational of using it it will be easier for them to ruin and scattered the house. Using polystyrene also give us advantage in term of carrying this props along the way. Besides candy house we also used polystyrene to create an axe and wood that belongs to the wood cutter and the cage that belong to the witch. For wood chunk we used small round chair and covered it up with the wood pattern. This prop is used when Hansel and Gretel have been asked to wait in the wood while their stepmom and father go for a work. Other than designing the actual props we also used slide from power point presentation to give a view of the scene in this play. The scene including scene of the shack that belong to woodcutter, the forest where Hansel and Gretel were asked to wait and they get lost in it. The snow-white bird that singing beautifully in this play. The house they made by the woodcutter for the witch and the wedding scene. The rational of using this slide it is cost effective and most important thing it can save a lot of time compare of doing the background manually. Both of the technique does have it own strength but in our case using slide is more effective and efficient. The play cannot be completed without the sound effect for each scene. In this play we been used the sound of bird chirping, the sound of the creepy wood, the countdown sound when the witch want to turn into the beautiful princess and the song during the marriage ceremony. But due to the technical problem we didnt able to make the audience to listen to all those beautiful sound and effect that we have been made. The example picture of the scene can be refer at appendix while the design for the props and material used can be seen in the video that had been recorded.

Scripts HANSEL AND GRETEL Next to a great forest there lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and his two children. They boy was name Hansel and the girls name was Gretel. Scene: at the house Father : What us to become of us? How can we feed our children when we have nothing for ?

Stepmom: Man! Do you know? Tomorrow morning we will take the two children into the thickest wood! Make fire for them give each of them a little piece of bread. Then left them there! Father: No woman!! I will not do that. How could I abandon my own children alone in the woods? Stepmom: Oh you fool! Then all of us will starve. Let me tell you the calculation if there are four of us then there will be more stomach to be fill in, but if there only two of us thing will be much easier! She gave him no peace until he agreed. Father: but I do feel sorry for the poor children

Scene in next room Gretel: (Crying).ishhhhhkkk..ishkkkkHansel Im so scared. Hansel: Dont worry Gretel I know what to do

Early in the morning the women came and get children out from their bed they let the children play for little while. Stepmom : Come on kids hurry up! We are going to the woods to help your father. Father : Hansel why are you always stopping and look around? Hansel: I can see my pigeon sitting on the roof and I think he want to say goodbye to me Stepmom: Fool, that isnt your pigeon. Thats the morning shining on the chimney Little by little Hansel drop the pebbles along the way

Scene: in the forest Stepmom: sit here children!. We will come and get you in the evening when we are finished Hansel and Gretel was so tired and they fall asleep. Hansel & Gretel: Twinkle twinkle little star, How I wonder wheres my family are, All around the wood so dark, We are hungry n we are stuck.( singing with sad tune) When they woke up its already night, and then they continue sleeping until dawn. Tomorrow morning Gretel: Hansel would we ever find a way back home? Im so scared and I m hungry. Hansel: dont worry sure we will find away lets go there maybe there something we can eat. Suddenly Gretel saw a little snow-white bird sitting on the branch. It song beautifully that they stopped to listen. They bird flew away and they followed. The bird sat on the roof and when they come closer they saw a house built entirely with candy. Gretel: lets help ourselves to a good meal; I will eat a piece of wall Hansel: I will eat from the window! That will be sweet

Nibble nibble little mouse, Who is nibbling at my house? (Witch) The wind, the wind The heavenly child (Hansel & Gretel)

Witch: oh no! Children! How dare u ruin my precious house! There is a price that you have to pay for all this come both of you!!

Hansel and Gretel was so scared.

Scene: at home The father regret because abandon their children. Father : How could I as a father left my kids alone in the wood. What kind of father Im Ya Allah please forgive me Stepmom : You fool!! Stop worry about them! Father : You shut up! Im going to look for them. The father went out and searched for the children along the way he saw the pebbles. Father: Owh these pebbles! My children must be dropping this along the way. Then the father saw a little candy home but it was been broken and scattered. Father: Im sure my children in that house The father entered the house and he saw. Father: Hansel and Gretel I miss you so much. Please forgive me my dear. Hansel and Gretel: father please helps us. Witch: Your children have ruin my house I cannot forgive them!. How come u as a

father didnt teach your children a manner! Father: Please forgive them they are only little children. I promised I would fixed your house and if you are not satisfied then you can punished me. Witch : okay I give one more last change!

So the woodcutter begin to fixed the house.little by little even though he is very tired but the help and the love for the children keep him going. The witch saw the strong bonding and love between this family members and she felt touched and cried her heart out. Hansel & Gretel: why the witch is crying? They all wonder what is happening. Suddenly.(countdown sound) All of them was surprised when the ugly witch suddenly turn into the beautiful princess. The woodcutter had touched the witch heart and unbinds the spell that had been cursed to that witch such a long time ago. It turn out that the beast is the beauty. Then the woodcutter married the beauty and they all live happily ever after.. What happen to the stepmom? Shes now living alone and become haywire. -THE END-

Reflection

Name : Afidah Binti Mahmad Sani I/C Number: 861021-43-5156 On 23rd April 2012, DPLI Englishs unit, Disember 2011 intake had successfully dramatizing fairy tale at Dewan Tun Fatimah. A bunch of thanks to Dr. Anissa Nor Jetty for guiding us, give a lot of knowledge and always inspiring us to be a good English Teacher. Also a big thank you to all my dear friends. It was my first experienced to role playing a character in fairy tale story. For this dramatization our group chosen Hansel and Gretels story. As role-playing a Gretels character, am not facing many difficulties because the characteristic of the role was easy to understand. Besides that the dialogue are not too long and easy to memorize. For this play I felt a bit worried instead of excited, because Im not a good actress and not really exposed to dramatization. But all this feeling have been cover a bit when our group do rehearsal and clearly point out the story line. At first, when we get the task to dramatize a fairy tale, we do discussion among our group. After we have select fairy tale story which is Hansel and Gretel, we discussing the plot and characters involved in the story line. The character selection was based on suitability of the members characteristic. Such as, for role-playing the father, we need a height and tough person. And same goes to the other characters. We didnt have problem to decide the characters because everyone in the group agreed with the selection and give a good co-operation.

After we select the role play for each character of the story, we setting up the props. We found out, there will be three scenes in the story line, which is Hansel and Gretel house, in the jungle and the candy house. We used pictures backdrop to make sure the audience can understand the story lines. Besides that, we used the suitable cloth to represent the character. For example, as a witch, she must wear a black cloth with unpleasant appearance. We also, make some props from polystyrene, such as, an axe, the cage and the house of candy. Those works we divided with the group members and some of the work we do it together. Before the dramatization we do rehearsal for the last time. Throughout the story line, there are changes in the last plot to make the drama interesting and surprising. I can feel my heart beat moves faster than normal and my body start shaking when it comes our groups turn to present the drama. When we start dramatizing, I do forgot some scripts due to the nervousness on the stage. Overall for our dramatizing fairy tale, I think am not enough practice and not prepared well. Like our lecturer also mention that, in a role play, you are the one who will make the role-play successful or not. For my opinion, to make sure the dramatization successful, we should speak clearly, express the words with face expression, use the correct tune and express the message using body language. After I experienced the dramatization of fairy tale, I agreed that role play can build our confident in learning the language.

We have been assigning by Dr. Annisa to worked on a special assessment which is to modify the existing fairy tales. There are 5 person in our group. We have discuss and agree to dramatize Hansel and Gretel. Every person have their own role. My role as a Hansel. My personal target was to speak using tones that suit the character and also to use some body language. So, I did study about the character. I found this task are very challenging at first but once we get started, it was great experience because all of us enjoy and did the best on stage. Through this task, I had challenge myself to speak in a correct intonation. During the process also, I learn many new thing. I am expose to nursery rhymes, riddles and jazz chant which I never care before. I can used all the material once I become the teacher soon. This task gave me idea on how to conduct a good drama in school soon. The important that I have learn is cooperation not only among the group members. We are helping each other in order to ensure this special assignment succeed. I enjoyed making the performance. I think that in this performance my costume worked well, it was easy to find something to wear at hostel to play role as Hansel. I also felt that the audience of our performance was supportive and encouraging because they clapped after every performances. They paid attention to our performance while we were performing and that really helped us. I think they enjoyed our performance overall. Despite all that, there is always a room for improvement. After analyzing, we need to be more prepared. This is because our sound effect and audio did not come out

and sound well. We cannot hear any sound that make our play a bit distracted. We should rehearse at the real place before the real performance. Besides that, I should learnt my lines better and study the whole performance. This is because whenever forgot my lines, I can always make other line that related at that time. Then, I would improve my physical movements and show more gestures. There is some bridle that we need to face. First, in terms of time. Even though Dr. Annisa have assign this task earlier but still we cannot prepared well with this fairy tale because we have to attend many activities and completing assignment. There is something that we need to improve which is our time management. As a student we should expect this kind of problem. It is our responsibility as a student to completing and do the best in every task. In addition, our props especially candy house also time consuming to prepared but we do enjoy prepared the props because we never done it before. As the role play is over, many aspect I need to be improve especially my pronunciation. I learn a lot through this fairy tales. I really hope that I can do it again this kind of activity. It gave lesson and challenge also. This activity encourage me to speak and built up self confident. Not only that, I also watch other group performance. Through their performance, I will keep the ideas to be done in school soon.

It can be said as a part of an integrated module, as a one-off activity on speaking fluently and it is also as a guided speaking activity for elementary and intermediate students and part of grammar lesson. When I and my groups members have been assigned to do the assignment regarding the role play I was very excited but at the same time I do afraid about it because as far as I know when comes to role play in drama it will required lot of task because it consist of many component that have to be analyze. Despite of everything I accept everything that had been assigned to me because I know that in the end of the day I would learn something from it. No matter how small it is as least I gain something. I do take this assignment seriously because it was my first experience of doing it. I know this would be challenging because we have to brainstorm the idea to modify the existing stories. While doing research for choosing the fairy tales I do find out that there are so many fairy tales that I never heard before. Other than that while doing this assignment I do read about the fairy tales and folktales and get an idea what it is really all about. Before this I never know what is the ending of Rumpelstiltzkin and Tom Thumb but after the research i know and I found out there are so many fairy tales that I havent read yet. I promised to myself after I have been posted in the school I want to teach my pupils about fairy tales and role play because I find out there are many benefit of having this activity. In this play I was given to take a role as a stepmom. I was very excited because I have slightly idea on how to play this role. I do a research on how to be a stepmom about the intonation of speaking and how they project their voice. I found it quite easy to

do it because normally while I conduct the class I always play the role as a stepmom when I first come in to class. This is to show the class that I was serious to teach them and to earn their respect but after getting to know them I would change my approach and make sure that if the student able respect the teacher then I can do the same. While doing this research it also exposed me on how to overcome fear in the stage. I do a lot of reading on it but I found it still need a lot of hard work in order to improve myself and the result would never come overnight. It takes lot of practice and courage. While doing the play I found that I was very nervous. The feeling when all eyes were staring was terrified my heart thumping so fast and there are so many butterfly that I could feel in my stomach.All sort of feeling was there. I was so nervous that I stumble with my lines. There are few lines that I forgot and have to make up on my own lines. Other than that I also disappointed because of the technical problem where the sound and music cannot be used. In order to overcome this problem I didnt realize that suddenly I make my own sound effect and it turn out that all of the audience followed. I was very embarrassed at that time but I try did try my best to save my group performance. After the play it was the best feeling ever. The stress and nervous all gone and I were very relieved. The best thing that I learn from this assignment that I have to be confident with myself there is nothing to be afraid of. It just the character and we just have to play it as we are supposed to be. We are in character so it is okay to be like the characters while we are perform. Other than that I also find out that rehearsal is the most important and crucial part for role play or stage performance. We must have a full rehearsal before the day of performance at the real stage. In that sense that we can avoid any technical problems that may occur. The projection of voice for every character also important especially in this situation where there is no microphone accepts for the narrator. I find out that it is quite difficult for me as the narrator to move into the next scene when I cannot hear what the line saying by the characters is.

As a conclusion this is one of the best assignment that I had received and this will be the lesson learn experience that I would remember for the rest of my life. Especially when my lecturer does credit me on playing the role exactly like a stepmom. There were a lot of thing that I had learned from this play. Beginning of editing the script, modified the story line, choosing of characters and designing the props all of that had given me so much knowledge that are useful to be apply later. Im thankful for having a lecturer that is very helpful in term of making us understanding of the role play I believed that if we had been practice and rehearsed the play well we can perform better than what we have done but all and all I was so proud of myself and to my group members that have been helpful and cooperate very well despite of the hectic life that we have to deal with.

Acting in drama is quite a new thing for me. Since it was a part of the course, it must be done successfully in order to achieve the objective of the subject taken. Before doing this task, we were discussed altogether with the group members in order to know the characters and how to role playing. There were many things I concentrated, in terms of the plan, activities involved, time management and time control as well. All these things were focused strictly since the task involved many people. Co-operation with group members was much appreciated whereas they gave a full commitments and supports. The dialogue, script had been prepared and distributed earlier. So, I got the ideas in my mind to get along the character in role-playing. Ive been experienced in role-playing just once during my secondary school. However, this task was still challenging to me and struggling very hard to adapt with that particular character. As a witch in role-playing, the script was quite simple and I did it successfully even though I had lost my mind to remember the script at the earlier scene. As I tried to remember, it became hard and I couldnt remember at all. Then, it was stacked for a little bit but I was still maintaining the character nicely. By using a high voice, I could cover my nervous feeling that time. Weaknesses Since this role-playing was my second time, the feeling of nervous couldnt be avoided. I was also quite stacked, blurred and made me lost the ideas to communicate and got along with the role-playing. This affected to the judge and audiences whereas they were

keep on waiting on what I was trying to say. In my context with the audiences, it is important for me to improve the communication skill in role-playing. I need to make pronunciation clearly as well as the intonation so that the audiences will understand and clear on it. Strengths In this paragraph, I would discuss on my feelings or thinking that took place in the roleplaying happened. Along the role-playing, I could find my strengths were my voice. I could speak with a high volume of voice and clearly understandable by the judge and audiences. Besides, I could feel the characters very well and did the role-play successfully. Co-operation with group members was also highly appreciated when I just went through the role-playing that didnt account in the script. It happened when I was really nervous that time, but I just did the role play and created my own dialogue. Suggestions The plan and preparations had been done at the earlier stage but still couldnt avoid the weaknesses of mine. If I get another chance, Ill do many things to improve myself and make this role-playing successfully presented. I need to learn to be calm in whatever situations or conditions so that, everything will be fine. Besides, time management is also very important. I expected to have the best role playing if I have more time to practice and concentrate on. However, I was really enjoyed doing this kind of activities, since many things I learned and experienced. I also seemed to think if the judge had a higher level of expectation of her students that it may have lead to higher levels of commitment. Actually, the excitement was initially there it just needed to be maintained. This way the members would work productively and efficiently to have something to show and share as well as receiving consistent and positive reinforcement to keep us on task.

I am so glad that all members of my group has succeed to present on our fairy tale drama in the last 23rd April 2012. We choose Hansel and Gretel as our fairy tale story and we had to change the way of story to become more excitement and funny ending. As we know that the story of Hansel and Gretel tells the story of two brothers who abused by their stepmother of action that casts them into the forest. For the hunger that they suffered, they met a candy and sweet house which is belongs to the witch and they eat the house greedily. The ending of the story could be that the children and the father happily ever after with the wealth of the witch after the witch is dead. We change it to make it more excitement which is, the witch suddenly exchange to a beautiful women and both of them (father and witch) will getting married and they live happily ever after. From this activity given by our lecture, we had learnt on how to create and modified a new situation based on the fairy tale chosen. Besides we can build up a spirit of cooperation and helps among the group members. I was glad that my group members give a 100% commitment in this coursework. I hope that this attitude will be sustainable especially for our unit as well. Every discussion conducted a good results of work. Each members gave their opinion and suggestion as well. Although not a good actress, they have managed to bring the character very well. Role play is the basis of all dramatic activity. The ability to suspend disbelief by stepping into another character's shoes comes quite naturally to most children. Through the structure of the drama lesson this can be used to great effect, challenging children to develop a more sensitive understanding of a variety of viewpoints whilst sharpening their language and movement skills. By adopting a role, children can step into the past

or future and travel to any location, dealing with issues on moral and intellectual levels. Thus role play can be easily utilised to illuminate themes across the curriculum. As my opinion, One important function of drama in the primary grades is to enhance the students' vocabulary proficiency, which is crucial to literacy development.
