Hymn of Praise & Unison Scripture

THE LORD IS BLESSING ME
Verse 1
The Lord is blessing me, right now, oh right now, I said the Lord is blessing me, right now, oh right now, He woke me up this morning, and started me on my way, the Lord is blessing me right now, Oh right now.

7:30 A.M., 11:00 A.M., 6:00 P .M.

MALACHI 3:6-10 (NRSV)

Verse 2
He woke me up this morning, I was clothed in my right mind, He didnt let me sleep too late, he woke me, woke me, woke me right on me, He woke me up this morning and started me on my way, the Lord is blessing me, right now, oh right now.

For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, have not perished. 7Ever since the days of your ancestors you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, How shall we return? Will anyone rob God? Yet you are robbing me! But you say, How are we robbing you? In your thes and oerings! 9You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing methe whole na on of you! 10 Bring the full the into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overowing blessing.

HYMN OF PRAISE

Confession of Sins
Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your name the praise forevermore. ****** To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comfor ng ... To all who are friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need libera on; and lmighty and Most Merciful Father, we to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its come before You, acknowledging our doors. Thank you for coming, and may God sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of bless you. our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, le undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You. Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injus ces, the racism, and the evil which pervade our everyday lives. We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for libera on which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed even our own Black brothers and sisters!

CONFESSION OF SINS

Stewardship Tithing Litany

Minister: Congrega on: Minister: Congrega on: Minister: Congrega on: Minister: Congrega on: Tithing is the biblical principle of returning 10% to God rst. The earth is the Lords, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. (Psalm 24:1) Debt is a spiritual issue. We are robbing Gods people when we live beyond our means, refuse to budget, invest, save, and the; we are seduced by debt. The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers. (Levi cus 25:23) Tithing, budge ng, and stewardship are the solu ons to the spiritual problem of debt. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. (I Corinthians 4:2) Debt is fed by the desire for immediate gra ca on, poor planning, and the need to keep up appearances. His master replied, Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your masters happiness! (Ma hew 25:21) Tithing, saving, budge ng, and good stewardship of resources is the calling of all Chris ans. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. (Luke 6:38) Debt slavery has been used since 1863 to prevent people of African descent from gaining power and independence. Share with the Lords people who are in need. Prac ce hospitality. (Romans 12:13) Our ancestors were forced into slavery. Today, we volunteer to be enslaved by debt and we mortgage our childrens future. O God, we have been called to be a debt-free congrega on. We are called to teach our community, children, and grandchildren the discipline of thing, the power of budge ng, the blessing of saving, and the benet of inves ng. We desire to live debt-free because it honors God and our ancestors, who died not for debt, but that we may live free with our God. Amen.

SERMON NOTES

To Do Justice
Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Hebrews 13:3

Family,
Look at the person to your le , and then to the right: Chances are that one of you three has a loved one currently under control of the criminal jus ce system na onal, state or local either in jail/prison, on proba on or parole. There is an epidemic that is crushing our communi es and destroying any semblance of social fabric, rampaging right before our eyes, ripping through our families, leaving children with one and o en no parent to raise them. It is sweeping young black and brown men of color o our streets, aec ng the poor and disadvantaged dispropor onately, and increasingly aec ng young ladies and women. What is so insidious and so heart wrenching about this epidemic is that it is imminently curable . . . if only enough people cared! In fact, if this epidemic was occurring anywhere else but the black and brown and poor neighborhoods of our country, all of our greatest scien sts, researchers, and, yes, even poli cians, would be in a mad rush to nd a cure. Im not talking about a new u strain, or STD, or some an bio c resistant microbe; the epidemic I am talking about is mass incarcera on. As the Samuel DeWi Proctor Conference has declared today, May 6th An -Incarcera on/Jus ce Sunday, below are a few alarming facts: In the 1970s, prison ac vists were horried that there were over 250,000 people in U.S. prisons; yet today, there are more than 2.3 million people incarcerated . . . the vast majority of them black, brown or poor America leads the world in incarcera ng our people, at a rate of 743 per 100,000, more than Russia and China Racial dispari es are astounding and indefensible! Black men are incarcerated at 5 mes that of white men, and La no men twice that of white men. For black men between the ages of 25 and 29 . . . the number is 15 mes that of white men

As tragic as these gures are, it doesnt end there. Even a er our brothers and sisters complete their sentences, parole, and proba on obliga ons, there is a blazing red F a ached to them for the rest of their lives. Depending on where you live, an ex-felon can be legally discriminated against in various ways: vo ng restric ons, disqualied for public benets, such as food stamps, federal housing, or student loans, and, even disqualied for jury duty. The hard work dismantling our broken jus ce system has begun. One way you can join the ght is by contac ng the Trinity UCC Prison Ministry and The Next Movement commi ee at prison@trinitychicago.org.

Anti-Incarceration Litany
MINISTER: ALL: MINISTER: ALL: MINISTER: Sisters and Brothers, we gather on this An -Incarcera on/Jus ce Sunday remembering that God bringeth out those which are bound with chains. Beloved, what chains are broken this day? The chains of domina on and decep on that support and legi mate rising incarcera on rates. Beloved, what chains are broken this day?
ANTI INCARCERATION LITANY

The chains of prejudice and fear that inltrate the hearts of our sisters and brothers who believe in criminalizing stereotypes and who value prot over people. Beloved, what chains are broken this day? The chains of lying and hatred, chains of distrust and greed, chains of racism and classism. For it is wri en And, behold, the angel of the Lord came, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell o from his hands. Is this not what The Creator has chosen for us? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to free us from oppression and that we break every yoke? Through educa on, prayer, and mobiliza on we celebrate the breaking of the chains of injus ce! Today we celebrate that jus ce will prevail!

2012 Trinity UCC Theme Walking, Talking and Living Our Faith, Ephesians 4 (NLT)
January Ephesians 4:1 Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. February Ephesians 4:2 Always be humble and gentle. Be pa ent with each other, making allowance for each others faults because of your love. March Ephesians 4:3 Make every eort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. April Ephesians 4:4 For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. May Ephesians 4:5-6 There is one Lord, one faith, one bap sm, and one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all. June Ephesians 4:7 However, he has given each one of us a special gi through the generosity of Christ. July Ephesians 4:11 Now these are the gi s Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. August Ephesians 4:12 Their responsibility is to equip Gods people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. September Ephesians 4:13 This will con nue un l we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of Gods Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. October Ephesians 4:14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We wont be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be inuenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. November Ephesians 4:15-16 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body t together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. December Ephesians 31-32 Get rid of all bi erness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
