Homework: Chapter 22 Alcohol

1. Explain the depressant effects of alcohol. Ethanol is the substance that is a central nervous system depressant. Depressants slow the function of the central nervous system. A person also can experience blurry vision, balance problems, and slurred speech. Alcohol is a depressant in which it quickly affects a persons motor skills by slowing reaction time, impairing vision, and shuts down involuntary actions such as breathing and gag reflex that prevents chocking. Alcohol diminishes clear thinking and good judgment which, basically, affects healthful decisions that you could make. 2. How might alcohol affect your ability to make healthful decision? It slows down your reaction time, impairing vision and so you will be able to make stupid decision not able to think correctly. You will be able to not think straight because of the lack of oxygen you get and the ethanol that changes your brain state. Therefore, your brain will work less and wont be able to think as usual in normal life. 3. Explain why refusing alcohol will help you avoid unsafe situations such as sexual assault or violence. The refusal of alcohol will help you to avoid many things such as unsafe situations like sexual assault and violence for several reasons. As known, teens that drink alcohol are more likely to be victims or perpetrators of violent crimes such as rape, aggravated assaults, and robbery. They are also more likely to take parts in a fight which would result in school or police action. Alcohol use impairs a persons judgment, lowers his or her inhibitions, and compromises his or her moral standards. As a result, when you are drunk you have a higher chance to engage in sexual activity at an earlier age, engage in sexual activity more often, and to engage in an unprotected sexual activity than a person who does not use alcohol. Therefore, it is good to refuse taking alcohol, or drinking, because it will help you avoid unsafe situations such as sexual assault and violence. 4. Explain ways families can have positive influence on teens decisions about alcohol use. Families can explain the dangers of alcohol and teach them about how to control the use of alcohol. They should also be good examples of not drinking alcohol and abusing the normal usage. Teens cite parental disapproval as a number one reason for not using alcohol. Therefore, teens are more likely to not drink due to the families positive influence on them, avoiding alcohol usage.

Buying alcohol is very expensive if a lot of alcohol is needed for excess drinking. The persons finance would be cut down hugely by alcohol and it could lead them to bankruptcy or even in debt. Because they are dependent on the alcohol, they want to buy more and it becomes a cycle just like drugs such as heroin. 9. Explain how excess drinking can affect the family? (Being bad examples) It would bring a divorce among the married couple. 10. Explain what diseases may result or an increase risk as a result of excess drinking? You can have liver disease, breast cancer, liver cancer, head and neck cancer, pancreatic cancer, damage to brain 11. What do you consider the most serious danger of teen alcohol consumption? Why? I believe the serious danger is not the person just getting cancer or long term diseases but it is the harm it could give such as homicides. I dont care if the teen is affected by the alcohol but I do care the teen bringing violence and murder in society and that is the most serious danger of teen alcohol consumption.
