ETIQUETTE AND SELF ESTEEM

INTRODUCTION Etiquette is basically rules of acceptable behaviour. When considering etiquette we also look at what society considers as right and wrong. Values accepted by society which include cultural values, religious values, personal principles that govern an individual or a society. Today, these strong values have lost its stand because of modernization. Some of these values include standing up for an elderly person to sit, prostrating to greet an elderly person, living an honest life full of honour. People trying to move from tradition to modernization with disregard for their culture in order to belong to society. The modern media, fashion, movies, songs, family beliefs and education has caused more harm to the society. Self Esteem is simply self respect. How an individual carries him or herself in society. Dignity is key to self esteem. Placing a value on ones self or self worth. Self esteem is also a defence mechanism on you knowing who you are and not allowing negative influences telling you what you are not. Many youths today dont know who they are and therefore have changed themselves into what they are not. In accepting new beliefs they have forgotten what they stand for. It is ones values that gives self worth or esteem. So the question is who are you and what meaning or identity have you attached to yourself. Your name is a brand because of the kind of identity you have created for yourself. Some individuals reputation has been regarded as great impactful reputations while some have been a disgrace to society. According to the bible, a good name is better than great riches and favour is better than gold and silver proverbs 22 verse 1. To boost ones esteem one needs to adopt strong etiquette. In society today you discover young girls messing up themselves because of a few thousands of naira forgetting that the valve of a human life is as precious as another. Even go to the extent of aborting their pregnancies, dropping out of school, engage in prostitution, selling their children

for money or wealth have successful destroyed their worth. No man would ever marry a woman that he has either violated, abused or defiled and neither would his friends. Men involving themselves into the use of hard drugs, visiting prostitute, alcohol consumption amongst others. No purpose- driven woman would ever get associated with an irresponsible man. It is just the plain truth anyone going somewhere must know who he or she is. Yes, bad etiquette would give attention but for a short while then you are on your own. The bottom line is do the right thing and dont allow anyone to tell you who you are not. You are what the world has never seen before.
