Assume cranking times of 10 seconds. Recommend use of jacket water and lube oil heaters below 50F ambient to hold a minimum of 70F in engines. When used, increase starter consumption 5% for each 10F air intake temperature below 50F. Natural gas consumption is 130% of air. Assume natural gas torque is 110% of air. Maximum pressure of the standard TDI 112V starters is 150 psig. Maximum pressure of the optional TDI T121V is 90 psig.Standard is 1 starter per engine. Using optional twin starters doubles the torque output and consumption per start.

INSTRUCTIONS / EXAMPLE:

Starting Systems

To find the minimum required air pressure at the starter (PSIG), add the engine cranking torque from Table 1 and the calculated (or use Curve 1) accelerating torque for the driven equipment to the friction torque of the driven equipment. From Table 2 select the minimum needed air pressure. Do not interpolate between pressures. Use the next higher pressure. To find the air consumption per start (SCF), use the minimum air pressure at the starter (PSIG) from above and refer to Column 3 of Table 2.

3 Minimum Size of Air Receiver, FT

(Req' d number of starts) x (SCF of air per start) x (Atmos. press., PSIA) (Max. air receiver press., PSIG) (Min. usable air receiver press., PSIG)

EXAMPLE:
GIVEN INFORMATION 12V-AT27GL engine 60F ambient SAE 40 lube oil Driven equipment is a generator Generator WR2 = 1,000,000 LB-IN2 Generator friction torque = Negligible Maximum air receiver pressure = 150 PSIG Piping pressure loss = 10 PSIG Number of starts required = 3 Length of crank cycle = 10 seconds Atmospheric pressure = 14.7 PSIA SOLUTION Engine cranking torque, LB-FT = 2400 (Table 1) Generator accelerating torque, LB-FT = 650 (Curve 1) Generator friction torque, LB-FT = 0 (Given) Total cranking torque, LB-FT = 2400 + 650 + 0 = 3050 Minimum air pressure to provide 3050 LB-FT torque = 150 PSIG (Table 2) Typical air consumption per start, SCF = 245 (Table 2) Minimum air receiver pressure equals minimum air pressure at starter plus piping pressure loss, PSIG = 150 + 10 = 160 PSIG. Use optional 2nd starter. Torque per starter LB-FT = 3050/2 = 1525 Minimum pressure to provide 1525 LB-FT torque = 100 psig (Table 2) Air consumption per start with 2 starters, SCF = 170 x 2 = 340 Minimum air receiver pressure PSIG = 100 + 10 = 110 PSIG
THEN: Minimum air receiver size with two T-112V starters is:

FT 3

3 x 340 x 14.7

150 110

375

This receiver may be too large to be practical. The customer may choose to use two of the optional T-121V starters in Table 3. In that case the minimum air pressure at the starter is 70 PSIG and air/start is 218 SCF x 2 starters = 436 SCF. Using a 150 psig receiver regulated to 90 PSIG would result in the following receiver size: FT 3
3 x 436 x 14.7

150 80

275

NOTE: If adverse starting conditions will be commonly encountered, increase the size of the receiver by 25%. Recharge of the air receiver between starts is neglected.
