Unit Plan Reflection: Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities

Description of the Unit: This unit introduces systems of linear equations and systems of inequalities. Students will solve a system of two linear equations by using graphing, substitution, and elimination/linear combinations. The choice of method for solving a particular linear system is considered and linear systems that have one solution, no solution, and infinitely many solutions are identified. We also look at systems of linear inequalities and graphically solving them. Throughout the chapter we focus on applicable problems. Assessment Task: Attached. Concept Map: Attached. Unit Objectives: Students will be able to solve systems of linear equations by graphing, substitution, and elimination. Students will be able to determine whether a system of equations is inconsistent or consistent. Students will be able to decide which method, graphing, substitution, or elimination, is the best to solve a system of linear equations and applicable problems. Students will be able to solve systems of linear inequalities by graphing.

Schedule of Lessons: Lesson Topic Solving Systems by Graphing Lesson Learning Objectives
Students will be able to solve a system of linear equations by the graphing method.

Description of how the lesson contributes to the unit-level objectives

Solving systems by graphing is the first introduction to solving systems. It introduces the idea of an intersection point and what it means to be a solution to a linear system. Using the different characteristics of graphs, parallel, intersecting, or coincident, the number of solutions a system has is identified. Substitution is the second method introduced to solve linear systems. It introduces a procedural method to solving systems.

Tasks and/or activities for the lesson

Students will be asked to graph different systems and make observations about them. They will then be asked to make conjectures about what they believe the solutions are. We will have a discussion on the different types of linear systems and their solutions.

Special Types of Linear Systems

Solving Systems by Substitution

Students will be able to identify whether a system is inconsistent, consistent and independent, or coincident, being consistent and dependent. Students will learn the method of using substitution to solve linear systems.

Solving Systems by Elimination

Students will be able to solve systems of linear equations using the method of elimination.

Elimination is the final method introduced to solving linear systems. It gives another procedural method to solving linear systems. Students will use what they have learned in the previous lessons to solve application problems of linear systems. This lesson allows the students to see the individuality of each method, and when using one is better than another. Students will use what they learned about graphing to solve systems of linear inequalities. The will use this to solve application problems and an introduction to linear programming.

Applications of Linear Systems

Students will be able to choose the best method to solve a system of linear equations, whether it be graphing, elimination, or substitution. The will be able to use systems to model problems. Students will be able to solve a system of linear inequalities by graphing. They will be able to determine where a system is bounded or unbounded. They will identify the corner points of an inequality.

Because this is a procedural concept, students will be given a serious of problems. They will also focus on application problems in which substitution is the best method. Because this is a procedural concept, students will be given a serious of problems. They will also focus on application problems in which elimination is the best method. Students will work in groups to identify which method they will use and how to use a system to solve application problems.

Solving Systems of Linear Inequalities

Students will be introduced to linear programming. They will be asked to work on a task in which they will have to maximize or minimize an objective function.

*Special note, two assessment quizzes will be given.
