Sermon Notes

Speaker John Bonacorsi Title: True Worship Date: May 6, 2012 Worship (Webster): To regard with great, even extravagant respect, honor, or devotion 1. OLD TESTAMENT WORSHIP P P P
II Chron. 7:3-4 (NLT) When all the people of Israel saw the fire coming down and the glorious presence of the LORD filling the Temple, they fell face down on the ground and worshiped and praised the LORD, saying, "He is so good! His faithful love endures forever!" 4 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices to the LORD.

2. NEW TESTAMENT WORSHIP Rarely mentioned after Jesus ascended Jesus announced a transition coming
Jn. 4:21-24. (NLT) Jesus replied, "Believe me, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father here or in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans know so little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. 23 But the time is coming and is already here when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for anyone who will worship him that way. 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth."

3. TRUE WORSHIP (WORSHIPER)

Rm. 12:1 (NIV) Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.

You are the sacrificer and the sacrifice OTputting something on the altar and leaving NTclimbing up on the altar and staying there

it there

Worship (NT Def.): Day by day, moment by moment recognition of and response to the greatness and grace of God for what He has done for you.
Phil 3:3 (NLT) For we who worship God in the Spirit are the only ones who are truly circumcised. We put no confidence in human effort. Instead, we boast about what Christ Jesus has done for us.

Life Group Questions 1. Before you became a Christian, how would you have defined the word worship? What did that mean to you? 2. Can you share times or methods in the past when your worship follow more of the Old Testament model rather than the New Testament model? 3. As we grow in our Christian walk, our revelation of Gods Word (theology) sometimes changes. With this change in understanding often entails a change in our actions. Can you give some examples where this has happened to you personally in your Christian walk? 4. Share some of the things you are doing or becoming that enhances your New Testament worship.
