Huang Fu Mi The Maturation of Chinese Medicine The medicine of Systematic correspondence continued to develop, as seen by the publication of Huang Fu Mis (215-286 C.E.) Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Zhen Jiu Jia Yi Jing) and Wang Shu Hes (210-285 C.E.) Pulse Classic (Mai Jing). Several important steps in the development of Medicine occurred during the Tang Dynasty (608-907 C.E.), especially in the realm of education. In the seventh Century an imperial School Of Medicine was founded and Medical Institutions developed. Another important development of the Tang Dynasty was the field of Medical Ethics, Sun Si Miao (581-682 C.E.), was a famous Physician and literary scholar of the period who was well versed in Daoism and Buddhism. One of his texts, the thousand ducat prescriptions (Qian Jin Yao Fang) contains a section entitled On the absolute sincerity of physicians, which establish him as Chinas first medical Ethicist. His essay sparked discussion of appropriate behavior for physicians in relation to who they treated and the fees that they could accept. Unfortunately, while the profession of Medicine was considered a benevolent practice, practitioners were relegated to a lower social position, being placed in the category of Artisans, along with Fortune tellers and Astrologers.

During the Song Dynasty Medicine became very specialized. Texts on specific diseases and their treatment were published, and the first practical handbook on Acupuncture and Moxibustion was compiled. Whenever a great Physician treats diseases, he has to be mentally calm and his disposition firm. He should not give way to wishes and desires, but hat to develop first of all a marked attitude of compassion. He should commit himself firmly to the willingness to take the effort to save every living creature. He should meet everyone on equal ground (Sun Si Miao)

One of the most important Medical movements on the Song Dynasty was the incorporation of herbal therapeutics into the Medicine of Systematic Correspondence (previously generally practiced by Taoists). As a result, The Medicine of Systematic Correspondence was extended to the herbal Pharmacopeia. This is when tastes and temperatures were assigned to herbs according to their Yin or Yang nature and specific functions were assigned to individual herbs. As a part of the revision of Herbal Medicine, the Theories of Zhang Zhong Jing, the author of treatise On cold damage and miscellaneous disease, were revived. This revival had a huge influence on the theory of herbal medicine, and several hundred years later was to precipitate the formation of a new Theoretical School, the school of Warm Diseases (Wen Bing Xue). During the Song Dynasty, the imperially trained medical practitioner began to use both Acupuncture and Herbal therapies to treat the sick. A large number of schools of Medicine opened during this dynasty. Who would be permitted to attend these schools and whether attendance at these schools was mandatory in order to practice medicine was at issue. 493 : Examination for qualification to practice and teach Medicine first appear; 510 : First Charitable government hospital establish; 620 : Hospital and Clinic established inside the Imperial compound; and Imperial Medical College Founded; 653 : Daoists and Buddhists monks and nuns forbidden to practice Medicine. Much of the conflict over education stemmed from the differing views of imperially trained physicians and independent physicians on the practice of Medicine as a livelihood or as a natural outgrowth of scholarly pursuits. By the 12th century, given the emphasis on neo-Confucian though and order and growing importance of the examination system for entrance into the official class, the imperially trained physicians won the argument. ATTENDANCE AT MEDICAL SCHOOLS WAS LIMITED TO THE CLASSICALLY TRAINED CONFUCIAN SCHOLAR AND THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE WAS LIMITED TO THOSE TRAINED IN THE MEDICAL ACADEMIES. The Medicine of Systematic Correspondence Continued to and continues to recognize the influence of the emotions on the health of body, but the influence of nominally spiritual aspects of the Medicine such as the role of the spirits in health and disease was diminished
