Course Description: This course is primarily targeted to military officers who have 4 -12 years of military experience and who are planning to enroll in a leading MBA program. Business schools are excellent places for junior and mid-career officers to transition back to civilian life, but they are not typically set up to provide the basic foundational knowledge that military officers need. Leading business schools are built to train analysts in leadership whereas most military officers have held numerous leadership posts, but dont have the analytical expertise necessary to succeed in an MBA program and beyond. The Pre-MBA Bootcamp curriculum helps to fill the analytical gap that many military officers need by providing a rich overview of key analytical concepts that will include the following learning modules: 1) Financial Modeling using Excel Basics and Applications 2) Business Statistics 3) Accounting Fundamentals 4) Concepts in Finance

Goals & Objectives: This course will be presented in a fully online format within the Blackboard platform and will run over six weeks. The course is configured primarily in a self-study format where students progress through the course materials and complete all readings, exercises, and assessments within the sixweek timeframe. By the end of the course, the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Use Excel to build basic statistical, financial and spreadsheet models. Use analytical tools which can be used to understand the concept and application of statistics. Understand roles of business and the application of statistics. Understand accounting as the language of business. Use basic accounting methods to analyze and create financial spreadsheets such as income statements and balance sheets. Explain the basic principles of finance and the role of the financial manager. Apply the concept of time value of money as it applies to bond and stock valuation. Apply cost of capital, dividend policy and capital budgeting concepts. Identify and explain the meaning of key ratios: acid test, cash-asset, debt to capital, debt to equity, and expense as a percent of revenue.

Continuing Education Units (CEU) will be granted on the completion of assessments throughout the course. Students are to use a self-study format and progress through the course by completing all readings, exercises, and assessments within the six-week timeframe.

How this class will be taught on-line: What you need to know
Mode of Instruction: This course will be 100% online (lecture readings and assessments). In the course website, I will provide students with my lecture notes and PowerPoint slides for all of the chapters that will be covered. These are a very valuable tool to use to help understand the material. It is your responsibility to keep up with the readings and assignments. Online Quizzes/Exams: There will be a series of quizzes/exams throughout this course to assess your understanding of the material. Students will be able to take each quiz multiple times until theyve mastered the material. Each quiz will consist of 10 multiple choice questions. There will be no set time for the student to log on to complete the quizzes. Quizzes can be found by clicking on the Assignments tab. Click on the quiz to begin. Follow the on-screen instructions. Exercises: There will be a series of exercises problems throughout this course. You are to complete these exercises to master the subject. Model answers will be posted at the end of the topic period. These assignments can be found on the course website under the heading Assignments. You will then see the assignment for the corresponding topic. Communication: A chat room/discussion area will be set up for student-to-student contact. There, students will be able to share ideas and work together in an effort to complete their assignments. I will also visit those areas on a regular basis to field questions. However, for quicker feedback, the best way to contact me is via email, Blackboard messaging, or telephone. My contact information can be found on the first page of the syllabus. Feel free to contact me 24/7. I make myself very available to students, as communication between student and teacher serves to promote a very rich learning environment.
