1. (a) What are the common types of road patterns? With sketches indicate the
important features of each.
(b) What considerations play a vital role in a new highway route location? Ex-
plain. [8+8]
2. (a) What are the general controls to be kept in view in determining the horizontal
alignment of road.
(b) A highway of width 7.5 m radius 150 m with a speed of 120 kmph and the
length of the wheel base 7.0 m. Find the extra widening required. [8+8]
3. (a) Explain how the speed and delay studies are carried out. What are the various
uses of speed and delay studies.
(b) What are the applications of location file, spot maps, collision diagrams and
condition diagrams? [8+8]
4. (a) What are road junction or intersection? What are the factors to be considered
in their design and operation.
(b) With neat sketches show various types of traffic signs, classifying them in
proper groups. [8+8]
5. What are the various factors to be considered in the pavement design? Discuss the
significance of each. [16]
6. (a) Categorise types of rail wear and enumerate the methods by which wear in
rails can be measured.
(b) What are the functions of ballast in a railway track? Explain. [8+8]
7. (a) Define Interlocking and explain the principle of interlocking. Describe the
various mechanical devices used for Interlocking.
(b) What do you understand by 'Negative superelevation' ? When from layout
of a B.G. yard, a 80 curve branches off from a 40 main curve in an opposite
direction. If speed is restricted to 28.95 kmph and permissible value of cant
deficiency is 7.61 cm, determine the speed restriction on the main line. [8+8]
