wearing overpriced ripped clothing and
spouting pseudo-intellectual rubbish. Or so
I thought until I read our spectacular cover
story guide to the hippest quarter of the UK
capital (see page 51).
In fact, with all the aention the area is
geing these days what with the Olympics
happening in Stratford 27 July12 August,
its more of a surprise the east is retaining its creative edge as
a destination lled with amazing restaurants, bars, shops and
boutique hotels. If youre heading over this summer keep this
magazine in your pocket and use it you wont regret visiting any
of our recommendations. And if there are any spots weve been
unable to squeeze in, send us a tweet @helloletsgo and let us know
about them. We may even publish your choices online at letsgo-
mag.com or in a forthcoming issue of the magazine.
Lets Go with Ryanair is a print and online travel forum
and there are lots of places on the network youve been to and
plenty of amazing experiences you know about that we want to
know about so get in touch by email hello@letsgo-mag.com, on

Mahew Lees piece on Portugals European Capital of Culture

WHEN WINSTON CHURCHILL stood up
before a crowd to deliver one of his rousing
speeches, the bow tie-wearing cigar lover
had usually been up all night sweating
over what he was going to say. Just like
the rest of us, the PM knew that his words
would be rubbish if he didnt put the work
in. Legend has it that he insisted on 60
minutes of toil for every minute of talking.
If your last speech ended with people
using you for target practice, take a leaf
out of Churchills book and prepare. And
the same applies even if you think youre
Gods gi to talking. People who have the
gi of the gab are oen only good in the
pub, warns Ayd Instone, an acclaimed
British motivational speaker (aydinstone.
com). Just because you talk well amongst
friends, it doesnt make you a good public
speaker. It gives people false condence.
Sticking to a subject you know well
will save you headaches and make you
less likely to collapse in a sni ing heap if
someone comes in late or a y suddenly has
designs on your nostril. Ayd also suggests
viewing the audience not as 100 people, but
as a single pair of eyes, 100 times.
Another way to feel less intimidated
by a crowd is to keep a sense of perspective.
This isnt the lions den, says Ayd. Its not
a maer of life or death.
Once properly prepared on a subject
and with a newfound mindset that sees the
audience as on-side and as a single person
you should see an instant dierence under
the spotlight. Practise it now on the plane if
you like (probably best to do it in your head),
or get yourself down to Speakers Corner in
Londons Hyde Park. All you need is a box
to stand on, a red-hot topic, and a pair of fast
running shoes for when a more established
orator stomps over to reclaim his pitch.

DRINK BEER
IS BREWING BEER vitally essential to
human life? Earlier this year a court in
Lithuania reportedly ruled that beer
should be in the same category as
medical supplies and drinking water,
denying brewers the opportunity to

probably the most ridiculous decision
in the world. At press time, an appeal

What do spicy sausages, ping-pong

very interesting locals
Do a tour of Hansa studios, where David
Bowie and Iggy Pop recorded.
@bobollie via Twitter
So he was actually naked? In here? I ask.
Oh yes, nudity in studios can really help
artists. Im gobsmacked. Thilo Schmied, my
impressively goatee-bearded guide, has just
informed me that Martin Gore from Depeche
Mode, a band I love, liked to record here in the
legendary Hansa studios totally nude.
More records than you would think are
sung naked, he says. A good comparison would
be when you stand at home alone in the shower.
You feel you can sing anything. Crikey. Ill never
listen to my Depeche Modes Greatest Hits in the
same way again. But back to Bobs tip. Hansa is
still very much a working studio Snow Patrol
and U2 were here recently but go on one of
Thilos brilliant tours and youre allowed to sneak
a peek. A former recording engineer, Thilo is a
treasure trove of anecdotes on all the bands whove
worked here, both clothed and unclothed. Before
Unication, Hansa was so close to the Wall that the
border guards could listen in to Bowie and Iggy, or
just watch Martin Gore sing with his bits out.

If you like museums and sausages, youll love
the Currywurst Museum
@benkersley via Twitter
In 1949, when sausage vendor Herta Heuwer
experimented by pouring ketchup, Worcester sauce
and curry powder over a bratwurst, she created not
just a spicy meat snack but a national obsession.
Veronika Sch, whos worked at the Deutsches
Currywurst Museum since it opened its doors in
2009, shows me around, and soon her passion for
sausage is rubbing o on me. I learn that the Cold
War wasnt just about rival political ideologies,
for some there was also a currywurst divide. The
question, she says, was to eat it with or without
skin. Veronika condes that she is a no skin eater
but encourages me to try for myself in a currywurst
degustation. She makes me cleanse my palate with
a swig of water between mouthfuls.
This place is genuinely fascinating, mapping
a very German passion in brilliant detail.
Theres even a cinema showing the nest
currywurst moments from TV and lm.
And trust me, theyre ne. Oh, and its
with skin for me.

STAY AT CAMERON HOUSE
LOCH LOMOND, SCOTLAND
Chill out on the bonnie banks
THE THING ABOUT LOCH LOMOND and Cameron
House is that its absolutely stunning at any time of
year. Theres incredible golf, a vast collection of aged
single malts, and a Michelin-starred restaurant by
Martin Wishart. Its family friendly too, featuring a
huge spa with childrens areas, and activities nearby
from cruising on the loch to trying your hand at
archery, shing and clay pigeon shooting.
Awesome scenic views, very hospitable sta in all
common guest areas. Food state of the art. Malt
collection requires about a month of tasting.
Vishal Singh, customer, via Facebook
Head chef Stewart Boyles worked with Martin at
Restaurant Martin Wishart, so its no surprise that
the food here is similarly awless.
Toptable.com
The jaw-dropping Loch Lomond and the snow-
capped mountain of Ben Lomond dominate almost
every view from this ve-star baronial pile owned by
the De Vere chain, which sits at the southern tip of the
famous Scoish loch. Even the waterslide plunging
you into its indoor pool gets in on the act it wins our
award for best view from any waterslide, ever.
Metro.co.uk
Authentic, from the rst whi of wood smoke.
Somehow they manage to cover the place with
Scoishness without ever being less than
sophisticated and relaxing. Tartan, replaces,
beams, all elegance and harmony rather than bric-
a-brac. Everybody I met was local, helpful, pleasant.
Impossible not to like this.

Spotlight on East London
FLY RYANAIR TO LONDON (GATWICK, LUTON AND STANSTED) FROM OVER 100 DESTINATIONS, INCLUDING BILLUND | CRETE |
WHAT DO BRITNEY SPEARS, Rihanna
and Jake Gyllenhaal have in common?
Theyve all starred in music videos lmed in
Hackney in the last two years (Gyllenhaal
hasnt taken up singing, he starred in a clip
for French band The Shoes). And when stars
arent lming here, theyre performing or
hanging out at Lovebox in Victoria Park
(1517 June), one of the UKs best city music
festivals. Accommodation isnt a problem,
given the handsome boutique hotels you
can now nd in Shoreditch and Clerkenwell.
It wasnt always thus. Rich in character
if not in cash, the east used to be functional
and utilitarian in feel, associated with
its lively fruit, veg, ower, sh and meat
markets (and theyre all still here). That was
the era before Vogue referred to Dalston as
the home of cool (see p62) and before east
Londoners hipster dress code became an
internet parody genre.
A few years back, Kanye West and
Jay-Z certainly wouldnt have thought to
head to this part of town to premiere a
new video by projecting it onto the side of
Shoreditch High Street railway station.
Well, they couldnt have done, as it didnt
exist the new station opened in 2010. East
London has been undergoing an extended
period of regeneration, and the only thing
that doesnt seem to change about this side
of town is that people are always talking
about it.
A young, creative feel and excellent
nightlife scene are just part of the easts
aention-grabbing qualities. Its also home
to the City, the UKs key nancial district,
doed with iconic London architecture.
Speaking of iconic architecture, the
Olympic Park in Stratford is almost ready
to full its destiny the Games begin on 27
July. More than ever before, the east of the
capital feels like the place to be this summer.
We hope that youll enjoy and get some
use out of the lile guide that follows, but
we dont claim to have comprehensively
detailed the best of the east. Because in a
place this fun and fast-paced, how could we?

COLUMBIA ROAD FLOWER MARKET
On Sundays, this street is particularly fragrant (and not in the way
that some parts of the capital are fragrant). Its at its best when
filled with splendid blooms, but worth a visit any day of the week
for its independent stores and quirky pubs.
04

THE SQUARE MILE
Londons world-famous financial district even has its own police

05

A NIGHT OUT
Choosing just a handful of bars
to mention fleetingly in our
nightlife section (p62) was a
tough call, because so many of
Londons coolest spots are in

of the appeal of course. Were

A TASTE-MAKING LIVE MUSIC scene
(see p62) is just part of what gives the east
its current reputation as the capitals most
artistic quarter. Theres always a diverse
programme of theatre, art and music at the
Barbican centre, the iconic London venue
that turns 30 this year; and all manner of
fashion and media folk have a presence in
the east. Gigs at The Old Blue Last pub on
Great Eastern Street are programmed by
sta from hipster mag Vice, for instance.
Given that London is a capital of the

contemporary galleries. Established

scene shied east over recent years,
so came increased demand for quality,
characterful accommodation. Its a sign of
the times that Dalston is now home to a
boutique hotel: the six-room 11

replete with Egyptian coon linens and
Elemis toiletries.
In 2010, private members club
Shoreditch House unveiled Shoreditch

pub. Staying here aords non-members

The Hoxton Hotel (doubles from 49/59),
named Best UK Hotel 2011 by The Guardian
for its mix of the good-value and on-trend.
Rooms have fridges but no pricey mini-
bar, for instance. Downstairs is a smart
brasserie and Milanese-style courtyard
aperitivo spot.
In neighbouring Clerkenwell, The
Rookery has sumptuous antique furniture,
including beds fashioned from 17th-century
oak; or for very contemporary digs in the
same area, 13

The Zeer has a vibrant brand
of chic (doubles from 183/220). Some of
Londons best brunch spots are nearby, so
head out to The Modern Pantry or St Ali in
the morning.
Among the major east London hotel
developments of recent years is 14

in Bethnal Green is reborn as a high-style

HAMSTER HOTEL
Next, you exercise in the wheel. Just as youre
geing into your stride, you remember that you
forgot to close the shuers last night. You turn
around to do so and nd two middle-aged Frenc h
ladies peering in, bemused expressions scrawled
across their faces. Sacre bleu! Have I really turned
into a hamster?
Such is the existentialist crisis awaiting guests
at La Villa Hamster a rodent-themed gte in Nantes,
western France. You can stay at the eccentric
bolthole (2 Rue Malherbe, tel. +33 (0)6 6420 3109)
for 109 a night, and its even equipped with some
hamster headwear to help you get into character
(I went further, with a costume from kigurama.com).
During my time in the city I come to understand
that Villa Hamster is actually prey normal for
Nantes a playful metropolis on the Loire where
people revel in barmy projects like this.
I arrive late at night at the 18th-century building
in the citys medieval quarter where Villa Hamster
is located, and turn the key to discover a bijou
Its morning. You
awake, scurry down
the ladder, pace the
woodchip-strewn

some grain.

space dominated by a huge metal wheel.
Theres a plastic container of oats dangling
over a mini-kitchenee and a water tube
should I fancy a drink. The bathroom
complete with farmyard-style trough and
grain all over the oor lies behind some
blackboard sliding doors, on which somebody has
chalked the word Erotique. Interesting. As for the
bed, its garreted away in a cage-like lo, accessible
via a ladder and a scramble on all fours.
Villa Hamster has human comforts too. Theres
an iPod deck, rain shower and Nespresso machine.
However, theres no TV or mini-bar, and the only
other entertainment is a large wind-up rodent and a
novel about a man trapped inside a hamster cage.
This place is the brainchild of Yann Falquerho,
an architect with uoro-pink glasses who lets the
property through his urban gte company, Un Coin
Chez Soi (uncoinchezsoi.net).
I wanted to create something unique, says Yann
enthusiastically. When I said, Im going to create
Villa Hamster, people said, You are mad!.
The villa opened in 2009. Since then,
its hosted roomers from as far aeld
as South Korea and the US. One visitor
brought his own hamster along, and
another proposed to his girlfriend wearing
the in-house hamster hat. Many guests come
because somebody has given them the experience as
a present. Sometimes customers say to me Its good.
Weve made love there!, says a pleased Yann.
Un Coin Chez Sois other lodgings in Nantes
include Captain Nemos Cabin, a Jules Verne-themed
at (the author hailed from this city), replete with
pilchard tins, a nautical shower tank and a steel
bridge. Yann is particularly excited about La Folie,
opening in July at Saint-Jean-De-Monts, on the coast
near Nantes. Essentially, itll be a wooden box on the
beach with a waterbed, and a trampoline to bounce
up and down on in order to glimpse the sea outside.
Wandering around Nantes, it starts to make
sense that something as bonkers as Villa Hamster

thrives here. Thanks to canny urban regeneration
and an artsy-leaning administration, the formerly
industrial city now feels like one big Situationist art
prank. Locals are fond of reminding you that Nantes
is full of secrets and its true. You may stumble into
a recording studio in a bus, or spot Tetrarc, a high-
rise that appears to shrouded in a sort of aluminium
nest. Then theres De Temps En Temps, the building
whose faade reveals tomorrows weather by
ashing red for sunny or blue for rain.
The citys main creative hub is le de Nantes,
an island in the Loire. Here, in a breezy hangar,
resides the most powerful symbol of Nantes
rejuvenation: Le Grand Elephant. A cousin of The
Sultans Elephant, a mechanical piece of theatre
that lumbered through London in 2006, Le Grand
Elephant is a four-storey-high, 50-tonne pachyderm
that transports people for rides on its back,
trumpeting and spraying water as it goes. You enter

When I visit, women in overalls are busy working on
the Jules Verne-inspired Marine Worlds Carousel, an
inconceivably huge merry-go-round, on which you
can ride ying squids and crabs.
It will open this summer, as part of a cultural
initiative for Nantes to aunt its sense of fun
and innovation to the world. Armchairs will pop
up on pavements. Therell be a supermarket art
project that means you could spot a masterpiece
in the frozen food aisle. A cultural trail, Le Voyage
Nantes, will link aractions, while the Estuaire
festival will see art installations extending 50km up
the Loire to the seaside town of Saint-Nazaire.
And to make up for Paris not geing the 2012
Olympics, Nantes will be hosting its own version of
the Games. You can expect sports such as Banaball,
which is basketball played with bananas.
Not only is Nantes quirky, but its also eminently
habitable in 2004 Time magazine described it
as Europes most liveable city. Its large student
population, with 45,200 studying at Universit de
Nantes, makes it lively too. Thursday evenings are
known as Night of the Student, and I nd many
of them slumped over beers and Nietzsche at Le Lieu
Unique, a cultural centre housed in a former biscuit
factory, now comprising a bar, art exhibition space
and hammam, and frequented by breakdancers.
Later, over at LArt Scne bar, students with
rockabilly quis and muon chops appear, ghost-
like, eager to tell me all about their taxidermy thesis
or blues band. Such is the bonhomie, soon
the locals are buying me beers and trying to drag me
to random house parties.
At 2.30am, I retreat to my hamster-hideout.
There, devoid of television, I spend the night

start empathising with our furry chums, mentally

Yes, Villa Hamster may be strange, but for a

Yann agrees it has been a success but that doesnt
mean he is going to rest on his laurels. Hes busy

Rafaela Salvador is
preparing for the dance
of her life. On Saturday night, the dancer
(pictured, below) will perform in front of a sold-out
crowd in her home town, the highlight of a
contemporary dance festival marking the start of a
year of festivities in Guimares, the new European
Capital of Culture. But right now, on this particular
Wednesday aernoon, her leaping and twirling is
conned to the oor of a basement room in an old
textile factory.
Performing in front of my family and friends is so
special for me, she says, still trying to catch her
breath aer an exhausting rehearsal. The
show shes devised, Identity, is an
exploration of the lile things that
make this small town tick. Its not so
much about the blend of nature,
industry and history visitors
discover here, but more about the
people the old friends gathering in
cafs to gossip over custard tarts and
coee, the bars packed with locals munching
francesinhas (steak sandwiches soaked in melted
cheese and beer) and drinking Vinho Verde by the
bole. The famous regional tipple is named green for
its freshness as its meant to be consumed young.
Theres a relaxed pace of life here, and a strong sense of
identity Guimares was the rst capital of the
edgling Portuguese nation and birthplace of the
countrys rst king.
The town, which shares its new title with Maribor,
Slovenia, is the smallest European Capital of Culture
since the scheme was introduced in the mid-1980s. Its
almost certainly one of the hardest to pronounce
correctly (gee-mar-ay-eesh). In a larger city, a
seen-it-all-already populace might not care as much
about such an accolade, but here its a huge
source of pride. A lap of Toural, the towns
epic main square, reveals dierent versions
of the Guimares 2012 logo in every shop
window; heart-shaped scarves,
owers, shoes, even custard tarts.
Theres a real belief that being a
Capital of Culture will give the city
a nancial social and nancial li.

Her performance will take place at Vila Flor
Cultural Centre, which includes the eponymous
18th-century baroque palace and a state-of-the-art
auditorium. At the centres buzzy caf, Guimares
2012s chief executive o cer Carlos Martins explains
how a year-long injection of culture will spark
innovation in the city.
Half the population here is under 30, he says.
So this is really for the younger generation. This is so
they can feel that they are part of something big and
become part of Guimares cultural life themselves.
He talks excitedly about some of the hundreds
of events happening this year, including concerts by
jazz legend Pat Metheny and Sonic Youths Thurston
Moore, lm-making events with veteran directors
Jean-Luc Godard and Peter Greenaway, and epic
theatrical performances that will turn Toural
square into a vast stage.
In January, the entire city became the venue for
Mi Casa Es Tu Casa (My House Is Your House), in
which dozens of people opened their living rooms
to strangers and hosted concerts by local and
Whats in a francesinha?
Northern Portugals contribution to the culinary world is the francesinha, a madly calorific take on
the French croque-monsieur (its name, little Frenchie, can only be regarded as ironic). Its a toasted
sandwich made with two steaks, a pile of ham, melted cheese, fried eggs and a sauce of beer, wine,
port, brandy and whatever else is in the drinks cabinet. Its typically served with a vast pile of French
fries. Get some at Confeitaria Cunha in Porto (Rua Sa da Bandeira, tel. +351 223 393 070).

international musicians. I went out to the

100 people lining up outside my front door, says
Martins, who hosted one of the gigs.
Vimaranenses (the people of Guimares) dont
have to travel far to see how being the Capital of
Culture can transform a place. Porto, a 40-minute
drive to the south-west, was 2001s appointed city.
The space-age Casa da Msica, which cost about
100 million and was conceived to mark the
occasion, might have opened late and over-budget,
but it rapidly established itself as one of the most
beautiful and bold concert halls in Europe.
And Portos cultural renaissance is by no means
limited to a plush music venue. In the 1990s there
were less than half a dozen independent art galleries
in the city. Now there are three times that number on
a single street. On Rua de Miguel Bombarda, the
back-to-back galleries coordinate exhibition openings
so that every couple of months, the entire area once
a ghost town of empty shops and warehouses
becomes the scene of a massive street party.
Ultimately, Portos main draw for tourists
will always be the Ribeira district, its beautiful

medieval centre, as well as the port wine cellars on
the opposite side of the Douro river. But while the
winding alleyways, crumbling facades and Gothic
churches are almost enough to convince visitors
theyve accidentally stumbled into another century,
this is one of Europes most youthful and vibrant
cities. Just pay a visit to former mall Stop. People
stopped shopping at Stop many years ago when the
centre went out of business, but then something
unexpected happened: young musicians lled the
empty retail units to use them as practice rooms.
There are hundreds of bands based in Stops 85
rehearsal rooms, says Hugo Almeida,in-between
sessions with his metal band, Scaricare. These
include Stopestra, an orchestra of over 100
musicians, which is scheduled to appear at
music festival Primavera Sound in Porto on 710
June (primaverasound.com). Its a cultural coup
for the city, being the rst time the famous
alternative music festival has taken place
outside Barcelona.
Artists such as Bjrk and The Flaming
Lips will be gracing the stages of venues like
Parque da Cidade and Casa da Msica. The
Barcelona festival is still taking place too on 30
May3 June.
Paulo Fernandes (pictured), known to rock fans
as Slimmy, is a regular on MTV Portugal,a keen
supporter of the local scene, and owner of the norths
most distinctive haircut. We once had an inferiority
complex in Porto but now we believe in ourselves, he
says, strumming his guitar in his apartment just o
Praa da Liberdade, the citys enormous main square.
Bands used to move to Lisbon because thats where
the business was located, but thats changed. Being
the European Capital of Culture had a long-term
positive eect on this city.
In Guimares the people are anticipating a
similar outcome. Tourist numbers are already
through the roof and hotels cant keep up
with demand. This year is so important for
the city, says Rafaela Salvador, who will
overcome her nerves to perform for her
home crowd. Being the European
Capital of Culture is making us feel
proud, ambitious, and hungry to
achieve more.

Euro 2012 will be Republic of Irelands rst appearance at a
major football nals for 10 years, and the last chance for the old
guard of Shay Given, Robbie Keane and Richard Dunne to shine
on the world stage. Although drawn in the Group of Death with
Spain, Italy and Croatia, Ireland expecting around 20,000 fans
in Gdansk and Poznan may just spring a surprise.

Rising like a mirage on the horizon
out towards the airport, the
spanking new Stadion Miejski is
a venue like no other in the area.
Here, fans from Russia, Greece,
Czech Republic and Poland will
arrive and marvel at its facade
of semi-transparent breglass.
It also has a lighting system that
allows it to change colours.
HIT THE TOWN
Just three tram stops away from
the stadium is SportPUB (17A
Gwarecka, sportpub.wroclaw.pl),
its interior done out like a football
terrace in the colours of local club
lsk Wrocaw. Back in the city
centre, 30,000 fans are expected
on Rynek, the main market
square, and surrounding streets,
transforming them into a huge
party. Try Spi (9 Ul. Rynek, spiz.
pl), a landmark pub/restaurant
that serves a great house beer.
MUST-DO
Perhaps the most famous work
of art in Poland, the Racawice
Panorama is a vast canvas
depicting a Polish victory over
the Russians in 1794 (11 Ul.
Purkyniego, tel. +48 (0)71 344 2344,
panoramaraclawicka.pl).
WROCAW YOU SAY Wrocaw is a
magical place. You can feel
the intersection of Prague,
Berlin and Krakw, and a
culture unique to the city.
This place is post-Soviet
Cinderella. In just a few
short years it has really
blossomed.
L.U.C, rapper and music producer,
Wrocaw
A brand new breglass-
fronted venue lights up
the landscape

WITH SPRING IN THE AIR and
winter a distant memory, its time
to plan your summer break. And
this year, why not kick o those
ip-ops and put on your deck
shoes? Take to the water and
travel across the magnicent
Baltic Sea by modern passenger
ferry. Chill out and admire the
sea views before stopping o to
explore the ports in countries
as diverse and interesting as
Finland, Germany, Poland,
Sweden, Latvia and Russia.
Enjoy your voyage in
complete comfort with leading
cargo and passenger ferry
operator Finnlines. Let the ferry
take the strain so the only driving
youll need to do is when you
disembark at your destination,
ready to explore by foot, car,
mobile home, motorbike or
bicycle. For those who dont want
to drive, the advantage of joining
a cruise is that you can travel
without a motor vehicle by ying
with Ryanair to one destination
country, cruise around the Baltic,
then y back from another.
Being on board is as much fun
as being on dry land: the cabins are
comfortable, the food in the buffet
restaurant is second to none and,
depending on the vessel, theres
free use of the gym, sauna and hot
tub. Alternatively, indulge in some
shopping or enjoy a relaxing drink
at the bar at very reasonable prices.
When its sunny, grab a deck chair
and soak up the rays while gazing at
the stunning scenery. Meanwhile,
there are games and playrooms to
keep younger travellers amused.
Finnlines oers a variety of
routes across the entire Baltic Sea.

Coming to the city from the plain, the glance is attracted by the
skyline of Citt Alta (Upper Town), high on a hill and enclosed
by its sixteenth-century Venetian walls, erected in order to defend
the extreme western bulwark of the Serenissima (1428/1797).
The architecture of Citt Alta (365mt above sea level) is
characterized by narrow streets. The most important monuments
are in Piazza Vecchia and Piazza del Duomo: Palazzo del Podest
housing the recently opened interactive sixteenth century
museum, Palazzo della Ragione, Biblioteca Mai (civic library),
Duomo (Cathedral), the church of Santa Maria Maggiore,
Cappella Colleoni (Chapel), Contarini fountain.
Going down from Citt Alta, after Porta SantAgostino,
cobbled Via della Noca heads towards the neoclassical palace of
the Accademia Carrara art gallery (actually under renovation
will reopen by end 2013). Founded in 1796, it was an idea of
Count Giacomo Carrara to establish the Gallery and the Academy
of Fine Arts. Accademia Carrara contains nearly two thousand
paintings from Italian and European schools from fourteenth to
nineteenth century.
In front of the Academy is to be found GAMeC - Galleria dArte
Moderna e Contemporanea (Modern and Contemporary Art
Gallery), opened in 1991. Besides its permanent collection of 300
artworks dedicated to contemporary art in all its form, it holds
temporary exhibitions.
From Porta SantAgostino, in Via Pignolo, stand the Museo
Diocesano Bernareggi (Diocesan Museum), the seventieth-
century church of SantAlessandro della Croce, the church of San
Bernardino, which contains a particularly beautiful altarpiece by
Lorenzo Lotto and the church of Santo Spirito with paintings by
Bergognone, Andrea Previtali and Lorenzo Lotto.
Citt Bassa (Lower Town) is characterized by modern residential
quarters and commercial areas up to its suburbs.
The main urban transformations in Citt Bassa were
the construction of the Ferdinandea street by the Austrian
Government in 1837 (now viale Vittorio Emanuele II) extended
to the railway station in 1857 (now viale Papa Giovanni XXIII)
and the Centro Piacentiniano laid out by the architect Marcello
Piacentini and realized from 1914 to 1930. In the city centre there
is the Donizetti Theatre named after the great composer Gaetano
Donizetti born in Bergamo to whom is dedicated the Museo
Donizettiano in via Arena, 9 (Citt Alta).

Home exchange - the you
stay in my house, while I stay
in yours concept means that
except for geing there, a holiday
nearly anywhere in the world
doesnt have to cost any more
than staying at home. With no
hotel bills, the benet of free
accommodation and the ability
to exchange everything from
cars and bicycles to boats and
skis, home exchange is the next
generation of travelling.
I would say to someone
considering a home exchange
for the rst time to just go for it!
People oen think no one wants
to stay in their home but there
is always someone who would
want to stay in your location,
says Daniel, aer two successful
home exchange experiences
to Barcelona, Spain, and more
recently Dinard, France.
The ight booking was really
easy. Our exchange partners got a
ight in the evening into our local
airport and stayed with us for one
night and we got a ight out the
next day to Dinard. Ryanair oen
use the same planes and turn
them around so they go back to
where they have just own from.
What do Caroline and Daniel have in common? One is a happy mother of
four daughters from Glasgow, the other, a civil servant living in London.

This kind of ight schedule
gives you a chance to possibly
meet your exchange partners at
the airport, before you start your
exchange.
Saving about 300 on car
hire and around 120 a night on
accommodation, so about 900
was just one of the benets of
exchanging. We like to go to the
local bakers, get fresh bread and
have breakfast at our own pace,
says Daniel. The local markets
are great too as France has really
fresh produce and superb sh
which is wonderful as we love
cooking. Our exchange partners
also le us recipes to try and
suggested typical Breton food we
could sample!
In their exchange home
Daniel and his partner were
also able to enjoy videos, music
collections and books which
had been le out. We leave our
books and music out too for our
exchange partners to enjoy as
guests in our home, says Daniel.
We have been fortunate in that
people we have exchanged with
have had a similar outlook and
interests and I would almost
never travel any other way now.
For Caroline, Ian and their
four daughters, travelling to their
exchange home last summer was
no hassle either as their exchange
partners had le their car for
them at Malaga airport, meaning
they could easily get around and
enjoy sightseeing.
We visited the Alhambra
Palace and went to Seville for
the weekend which was only
two hours away, says Caroline.
We also took a trip to some local
beaches at Nerja and Almunecar
and there was also a small water
park we visited in Granada.
Caroline and her family
expected a holiday apartment
but it was large, had a great
outdoor patio and three double
bedrooms. We were absolutely
delighted with the standard of
accommodation. In the evenings
we walked into the main area of
the city where there were many
tapas bars but we also cooked a lot
at home as we had a lovely large
kitchen at the apartment and
there were lots of supermarkets
and amenities nearby. We were
in the communal swimming
pool everyday and it was nicely
I would say to

landscaped. There were lots
of children among the wider
neighbourhood and the families
were really positive and made us
feel very welcome too.
Caroline says that if they had
stayed in a hotel they wouldnt
have had any contact with local
people, not mentioning the cost
with four children. With no car
hire they saved about 300 -
400 for two weeks and with no
accommodation costs either, she
says they must have saved over
2,500 by home exchanging.
Weve kept in touch with our
exchange partners and made new
friends too. Home exchanging is
also such a great way to see places
as it gives you a new perspective
about places youve not been to
before so you enjoy them in a
dierent way.
