Praveen Ram, 30, who was convicted of the murder of his father Paras Ram and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2008, walked out of the Supreme Court in Suva, a free man. The Supreme Court delivered the judgment allowing the appeal, quashing the conviction and sentence imposed by the High Court of Fiji and acquitting him. Suva lawyer Ritesh Naidu represented him in the appeal, and had sought special leave to appeal from a judgment of the Court of Appeal on March 31, 2011, which affirmed the conviction and sentence imposed by the High Court The court heard that Ram (senior) died on July 25, 2000 after being allegedly struck on the head with an iron rod by his son (Praveen) on July 22, 2000. Praveen Ram, who was 18 years old at the time of his fathers death and 26 when convicted, had consistently denied hitting his father and alleged that the deceased came by his injuries which ultimately caused his death when he fell on a concrete bridge on the driveway of his house. The presiding judges were president of the Supreme Court Chief Justice Anthony Gates, Justice Saleem Marsoof and Justice Suresh Chandra. Chief Justice Gates in delivering the judgment said the foundation for the conviction was found to be insecure and insufficient. The question is whether in the instant case, the Court of Appeal performed its duty to make an independent assessment of the evidence as required by law, said Justice Marsoof. It is manifest that the Court of Appeal did not do so, as it was content that the learned judge had adequately directed the assessors on the inconsistent statements of Timoci and Mesake. The Court of Appeal did not proceed to examine the inconsistencies and make an independent assessment of the evidence. Mesake Ravui and Timoci Delai were prosecution witnesses who told the High Court during the trial they saw Ram hit his father on the head with an iron rod. None of the other prosecution witnesses
claimed they saw the deceased being hit by Ram (Junior). Justice Marsoof said he was not satisfied that there was in this case sufficient legal evidence to satisfy reasonable men to the exclusion of any reasonable doubt of the petitioners (Praveen Ram) guilt. On the contrary it is my considered opinion that upon the whole evidence in this case it was not open for a judge sitting with assessors to be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt. Chief Justice Gates said the conviction was unsafe and the testimony of the two main witnesses who did come forward was significantly inconsistent. The initial investigation had lapsed and then later was brought to life again and the witnesses therefore to recollect events going back over a long period. The paucity of the evidence may have had its origin in the reluctance amongst friends of the family and neighbours to rake over old coals. That the deceased death was caused by the certain head injuries sustained due to a fall causing blood clotting on the right side of the brain which were aggravated by the condition of cirrhosis of the liver from which the deceased was already suffering. The doubts could not be resolved however no criticism should be made of the judges handling of the trial. Justice Marsoof speaking for the panel of judges delivered the judgement in favour of Praveen Ram. Accordingly hold that the Court of Appeal erred in law by failing to make an independent assessment of the evidence before affirming the verdict of the High Court. The evidence was unsafe, unsatisfactory and unsupported by evidence giving rise to a grave miscarriage of justice and in conclusion for the aforesaid reasons would allow the appeal and quash the conviction and sentence imposed by the High Court and affirmed on appeal by the Court of Appeal. I do not think the interests of justice will be furthered by ordering a fresh trial accordingly I direct that a verdict of acquittal be entered.

A 35-year-old man charged with sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl was jailed for 12 years at the Labasa High Court. Presiding judge Justice Daniel Goundar convicted and sentenced the accused who will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years and has ordered that the accused undergo counseling for rehabilitation while serving time. There is a need to incarcerate you for a long period of time to protect our children from sexual abuse. The primary purpose of sentence that applies to you is the protection of the community. Sexual offences against children are almost becoming an epidemic in our country. It shows a decay of the moral fabric of our society. Repeat offenders of sexual crime against children should expect to be isolated from the society for a long period of time until they pose no threat to the community. The court heard that the offences were committed between February 10, 2010 and July 13, 2011 in Taveuni and involved the same victim. On both occasions the victim was sexually assaulted in a vacant house. The second incident was witnessed by his brother who then reported the incident to the victims grandfather. In July the accused was arrested and confessed to the sexual assault and placed in remand. Indelivering the sentence Justice Goundar took into account that the accused was a Primary School drop out and said that guilty plea is not a reflection of remorse.
The Constitution Commission wants to hear the views of every Fijian regarding the new constitution. Constitution Commission Chairperson and world renowned Constitution expert Professor Yash Ghai shared this after he updated media personnel on preliminary works to be undertaken by the commission. Professor Ghai, whilst making his first official public statement said that the commission members would be travelling throughout Fiji to enable all Fijians to air their views on the new constitution and reach them on a mechanism that will soon be established. This includes establishing a database that would contain all submissions received by the commission. "We also hope to receive written submissions from organised groups, lawyers, other professions, political parties and civil societies and we'll be more than happy to meet with them on the basis of their submission," Professor Ghai said. He added that the Constitution Commission had intentions to set up a unit that would be responsible for the analysis of views on Fiji's new constitution. "This unit will provide guidance to us
as we draft the constitution and we also have certain principles that underline the whole process, the principles outlined by the Prime Minister is also fairly universal so the Commission will be guided by that as well," Professor Ghai said. Highlighting the importance of the process of forming a new constitution, Professor Ghai said that in keeping with the notion that the sovereignty of a country lies with the people, the Commission will take seriously all the submissions that will be made to them. The Commission is expected to advertise soon the positions for the core staff with appointments likely to be made in early June.

The trial of Max Sica, the accused killer of the three Singh children, will hear from a Canadian crime scene expert on Monday. Justice John Byrne adjourned the case till Monday when the trial is expected to hear from Canadian crime scene specialist Robert Kennedy. Sica, 42, who has pleaded not guilty to murdering Neelma Singh, 24, Kunal Singh, 18, and Sidhi Singh, 12, at the Singhs home in Brisbane's north, on April 21, 2003. The three are children of former Fiji residents Vijay and Shirley Singh.
The trial, which is in its seventh week, has already seen video footage of Kennedy conducting a series of tests on Sica in 2004. Sica, wearing socks soaked in bleach, walked up and down a set of replica stairs build by police at a police station. The impressions were to be compared to foot impressions found by police at the crime scene. Another expert podiatrist, Dr Sara Jones, had found the impression consistent with Sica's foot but she could not definitely say it was his footprint.

Students of Vitogo District School in Lautoka will have a reason to smile when they return to school next week. This is because they now have fully renovated classrooms made possible with funding by the Australian government through AusAID. The school was able to complete renovations and repairs works, costing around $154,000. The school needed a lot of assistance as it was one of the worst-affected schools during the two floods this year. Visiting the school on Tuesday, the Australian High Commissions acting head of mission, Glen Miles, said they had wanted to assist the school and students because children were the future of the country. School and education is important,
particularly, when they have been affected by a natural disaster, Mr Miles said. It is also vital to look at the communities at large and to try and assist them in rebuilding their lives. For us at the Australian High Commission, it is always incredibly rewarding to see such progress in such assistance offered through AusAID. Ministry of Education divisional senior education officer western Lorima Voravora said the Ministry was grateful towards the Australian government for their tremendous support. Mr Voravora said the students can now return to school with a newlyrenovated school awaiting them after the school break.

Fijis Constitutional Commission chairman Professor Yash Ghai says the government should justify any restrictions which are in place and they should not hinder public consultations. And he says notifications rather than permits would be the way to go for holding meetings. Professor Ghai told a press conference the restrictions should not "attain to human rights". I do not know the situation in Fiji but I hope that authorities will have a view that is of the law and bear in mind that restrictions should not attain to human rights, he said. When asked whether the meetings restrictions in place would in any way hinder the public consultations
they (Constitutional Commission) would carry out, Professor Ghai said notifications would be more proper than permits. Restrictions are not universal in a democratic country but to have some restriction for good reasons is important and balance is needed. He said the Commission hopes to carry out transparent public consultations towards the drafting of a new Constitution. I am not aware of the situation, but with regards to the drafting of the Constitution process, we hope to hear from all members of the public who wish to make their submissions towards the Constitution consultation. Professor Ghai said any restrictions that are in place should be justified.

Fiji Head of State, His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli kept his promise to the nation in pledging to walk 30 kilometers as part of his personal commitment to Earth Hour. Fijis Head of State was joined by hundreds of supporters as he began a 30 kilometer walk around Suvas peninsula, lasting more than six hours. The Presidents walk commits him to the I will if you will campaign which pledged the Head of State to walk that distance as part of his commitment to Earth Hour. As Fijis Ambassador for the Earth Hour campaign, His Excellency called for greater awareness towards the threat of climate change, global warming and the need to incorporate a greener environment across Fiji.
I am making awareness and I think other organisations too are doing awareness but we need to see how much word is really taken in by the people, President Nailatikau told supporters. Drizzling atmosphere in the capital did not dampen the spirits of the more than 400 people including women and children and even those from the corporate sector who turned up for the walk. World Wide Fund (Fiji) communications officer, Theresa Fox says Fiji should be proud for having a President that takes seriously the issues that the event represents. He is an inspiration not only to those that are walking with him but also the young and old who make up our society, Ms Fox said.

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI received Fijis Ambassador to the Holy See, His Excellencys Mr Solo Mara in an official audience for the presentation of His Excellencys Letters of Credence this month. In receiving Ambassador Mara, the Holy Father conveyed his best wishes for Fijis development agenda and highlighted in his speech the importance of incorporating spiritual and moral values in the implementation of national development agendas. His Holiness then called on States to ensure that the social laws do not increase inequalities, adding that in order to strengthen the human foundation of the socio-political reality, we must be attentive to another kind of poverty: that of the loss reference to spiritual values, to God. This vacuum he continued - makes discernment between good and evil more difficult and adherence to fashionable ideals easier. Subsequently, many young people in search of an ideal turn to artificial paradises which destroy them. Addiction, consumerism and materialism, do not fill the heart of man made for infinity. For the greatest poverty is the lack of love. Pope Benedict then concluded, religion permits us to recognize in the other a brother in humanity. Prior to meeting the Holy Father,
Ambassador Mara also took the opportunity in Rome to brief senior Vatican officials on the implementation of Fijis political and development agendas as outlined in the Governments Roadmap to Democracy and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development 2009-2014. In separate meetings with the Secretary of State, His Eminence Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and the Secretary for Relations with States, H.E Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Ambassador Mara briefed the Vatican on the recently announced Constitutional Consultation process announced by Prime Minister Bainimarama on March 9th and the objective of the process in formulating an all-inclusive and truly representative constitution by 2013 and democratic election by 2014. Cardinal Bertone who have had some experience in constitutional work welcomed Ambassador Maras written and oral presentation and conveyed the Vaticans support towards the realization of the objectives of the Peoples Charter in forging a peaceful and multicultural society in Fiji. Cardinal Bertone and Archbishop Mamberti in wishing Fiji well both assured Ambassador Mara that the country will be remembered in their prayers as it progresses towards its political objective in the months ahead.

month or June. He said the Wages Council looks at national economic indicators such as the consumer price index, inflation rate and other relevant social indicators when putting its proposal to the Minister. We have actually used the ILO criteria in the determination of sectoral minimum wages. It is basically looking at the economy. There are six sets of criteria and the social partners have agreed on the narrowed down version of the criterion that is relevant to Fiji, Mr Waqa said. One of the important criteria apart from CPI (Consumer Price Index) is the labour productivity growth rate. We need to go towards productivity based wage rate. We need productive people
and understand that we need to improve the efficiency or how we utilize our labour. That is not to say to work hard but to work smart - in the modern way of looking at it, Mr Waqa said. Government last year announced for a 10 percent increase for nine industrial private sectors, including the hotel and catering, garment, saw milling and logging industries along with the mining, printing, wholesale and retail and the security services sectors.

An Indian man is in custody for biting an opponent's ear off during a badtempered game of cricket. Locals had formed two teams to enjoy a relaxing game of leather on willow in the town of Thiruninravur, near Chennai, southern India. But the seemingly genteel sport soon spawned a furious argument between
two players, which ended with one sinking his teeth into a rival's ear, as reported. The injured cricketer was rushed to the hospital where his severed lobe was reattached, the newspaper said. His attacker, merely named Ravi in the report, was arrested and remains in custody.

The 59-year old woman was returning to her apartment in the northern city of Sapporo when the man snatched her bag. The woman gave chase, caught the mugger, wrenched back her bag and
then bit down firmly on his pinkie finger. The man escaped on his bicycle, leaving behind the top third of his finger on the ground. Japanese police are refusing to say whether they have used the detached pinkie to take prints in a bid to trace the bag snatcher.

Police in northern India have arrested a baby girl's father and uncle for allegedly trying to bury her alive. The two-month-old baby's father said he had been advised by a spiritual guru to bury her to help secure the good health of his next child, police allege. Baby Radhika has acute malnutrition and is receiving treatment at a hospital in the town of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh state, 80km (50 miles) east of Delhi. India has one of the highest female infant mortality rates in the world. The Indian preference for boys has also led to a skewed sex ratio and campaigners say up to eight million female fetuses may have been aborted in the past decade. Baby Radhika's life was saved on
Wednesday in the Uttar Pradesh town of Pilkhua, not far from Meerut. "The caretaker of the burial ground informed that some people had brought a baby for burial, but she was crying," police officer BK Yadav told the reporter. By the time the police reached the ground, Radhika's parents and uncle had already dug a pit, police say. The baby was wrapped in a cloth along with some religious symbols. Police said they arrested the father and uncle, but let the mother go on "humanitarian grounds". Mr Yadav said the mother was in hospital taking care of the baby girl. Police have registered a case of attempted murder and conspiracy.

Rima Fakih, the first Arab-American to be crowned Miss USA, has avoided jail in a drunken driving case. A Michigan judge put Fakih on six months probation, ordered her to perform 20 hours of community service and said she must pay $600 in fines and costs. Fakih also must attend an alcohol safety class. The 26-year-old pleaded no contest last month to driving while visibly impaired. A no contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing. She had faced a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail. Fakih said the experience was "very humbling." "I'm very relieved," she said. "I was willing to pay the price it took because I knew I made mistakes." Fakih has said she wasn't drinking the night of her arrest in December, but two police breath tests put her blood alcohol content at more than twice the legal limit. Fakih's family moved from Lebanon in 1993. She won the Miss USA Pageant in 2010.
As India announced plans to take the issue of "discriminatory" increase in US visa fees to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Washington assured it continued to fully support the admission of qualified Indians. The US and India "did have a good and thorough discussion" on the visa issues in the context of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's recent visit to India, State department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters Wednesday. As Clinton said it publicly "Indians are the greatest beneficiaries in the world of both our L-1 visa programme and our H-1B visa programme," she said when asked about India's reported move. "We understand that the demand is even greater. We are working through those issues. But we continue to fully support the admission of qualified Indians under these programmes," Nuland said. Under its Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2010, US sharply hiked the fee for H-1B and L-1 visas used by Indian and American companies to bring qualified professionals from abroad and for intra-company transfers respectively. Indian Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jyotiraditya M. Scindia told parliament Wednesday that New Delhi "proposes to seek consultations with the US under the Dispute Settlement Understanding of the WTO." Asked if the visa fees hike issue was discussed during the Clinton visit, Nuland said: "No."
Supporters called her win a victory for diversity, saying it countered negative stereotypes about people of Middle Eastern descent that have flourished in post-September 11 America. Police said Fakih was driving at twice the legal speed and weaving in and out of traffic before they pulled her over, and officers found an open bottle of champagne behind the driver's seat of the 2011 Jaguar. Fakih said the incident was out of character for her and that she didn't take her first drink until age 23. "It's not something that I grew up to be like a party girl or anything like that," she said. Fakih said she plans to pursue careers in acting and public speaking. She'll appear in a new celebrity dating show called "The Choice," which premieres June 7. "I'm more of an international figure now. I have young girls and people from all over the world watching me, so I have to make sure that anything I do, I'm taking extra precaution," Fakih said.

The two leaders exchanged pleasantries and shook hands before the media. Clinton called on Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at his official 7, Race Course Road (RCR) residence. Clinton, arrived in New Delhi after winding up her one-day visit to Kolkata, was received by India's Ambassador to the United States Nirupama Rao and senior officials of the Ministry of External Affairs and the U.S. Embassy in Delhi. Earlier in the day, Clinton met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata, who described her meeting with visiting United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as constructive and creative. Clinton urged energy-starved India to reduce its oil imports from Iran to maintain global pressure on that country to come clean on its nuclear
program. Addressing a town hall meeting in Kolkata, Clinton said New Delhi could find and tap alternative sources for oil, and added that Washington would like to see New Delhi do more to reduce its imports from Iran. "India... is certainly working towards lowering purchases of Iranian oil. We commend the steps they have taken thus far. We hope they will do even more," she said. Clinton also said that both the US and India with their pluralistic societies are the biggest threat to extremists because of their culture of tolerance. The extremists hate tolerance. They want everyone to think the way she do. Clinton said the United States wanted a peaceful solution and pointed to efforts by President Barack Obama early in his term to reach out to Iran.

A resident who live at Highbanks Marina in De Bary, Florida, 48km north of Orlando, said the unwanted visitor - thought to weigh at least 136kg - recently made off with a case of beer he had left on his back porch. Another local, Sandy Harvey, said the bear cruised around a bar at the marina last week, walking around the docks close to patrons. "We all rushed over and we all watched
the bear just meander all the way around," said Ms Harvey. The animal has also been spotted drinking from the fountain that marks the front entrance to Highbanks Marina. While residents are concerned the bear has lost its fear of people and could be dangerous, so far it has not hurt or approached anyone in a threatening way.

The workers were installing an advertising billboard when the platform failed Three men plunged to their deaths from the 69th floor of Thailand's tallest building after the platform they were using to install an advertising billboard split in two. Two other workers were left clinging to the structure suspended high above the Bangkok streets in the accident at the Baiyoke tower on Monday afternoon. "Three men fell to their deaths... while another two were rescued from the 68th storey - probably one floor lower than where they had been working," police lieutenant colonel Thamarak Reungdit said. He said the two survivors suffered minor injuries and had been treated in hospital. The bodies of the victims were recovered from terraces on different storeys of the building. "A forensic team will investigate how it happened and whether or not the platform was overloaded," he said. It is believed the platform broke when a supporting cable snapped. The 304-metre Baiyoke tower is a distinctive feature of the Thai capital's skyline and houses a hotel on its uppermost floors.
Aung San Suu Kyi will soon be able to travel. An aide to Suu Kyi, Htin Kyaw, said the passport was received from the Home Ministry. Suu Kyi applied for the passport following recent political reforms that culminated in her election to parliament last month. Last year, a long-ruling military junta handed over power to an elected, nominally civilian government. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, which won 43 seats in the April by-elections, will lead the small opposition bloc. The passport is valid for three years. She has not had a passport since she returned to Burma in 1988 to take care of her ailing mother, and was required by law then to hand it in. After becoming leader of the country's pro-democracy movement, she was put under house arrest for 15 of the following 22 years of military rule. Her confinement kept her from attending the ceremony in Norway at which she was awarded the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize. She plans to visit the country in June. During intermittent periods of freedom, Suu Kyi declined opportunities to go abroad for fear she would not be allowed to re-enter Burma, and so was unable to visit her British husband, Oxford don Michael Aris, before his death from cancer in 1999. They last saw each other in 1995, after which the junta denied Aris a visa. Since her release in November 2010 from her last term of house arrest, Suu Kyi had been invited to visit by several foreign governments. Recently, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited her to the UN headquarters in New York where she once worked. During a brief visit to Burma in April, British Prime Minister David Cameron also invited Suu Kyi to visit the United Kingdom, saying it would be a sign of progress if she were able to leave Burma and then return to carry out her duties as an MP. Cameron publicly suggested she visit in June to see her "beloved Oxford", where she attended university in the 1970s and raised her two children. Suu Kyi replied that "two years ago I would have said thank you for the invitation, but sorry. But now I am able to say perhaps, and that's great progress."

A CAT that got international attention for tipping the scales at almost 18 kilograms has died. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society said that the orange and white tabby named Meow died over the weekend, likely from complications from his morbid obesity. Meow, who was two-years-old, was taken to the shelter last month after his 87-year-old owner could no longer take care of him. The shelter put Meow on a diet and posted all his weigh-ins on a Facebook page that got national attention. Meow had lost some weight and was doing well when he began having breathing problems last Wednesday. Despite constant attention, and medical testing and treatment, Meow died last Saturday. Shelter Director Mary Martin says the entire staff is devastated, adding: 'We were in a race against time to get the
weight off Meow before he developed complications from his obesity, and we lost. But we hope his fight will encourage other people to help their pets maintain the best health possible. Obesity is not something to be ignored.' When he was alive, Meow was not the fattest cat out there. That record belongs to Himmy, a tabby from Australia that weighed almost 21kg.

Jason Kenney Amends Controversial Broadcasters Must Turn Down Ad Refugee Bill Volume: CRTC
are subject to mandatory detention, even if they eventually won a successful refugee claim, would be barred from family reunification or permanent resident status for another five years. The bill also would allow the minister to designate particular countries as "safe," meaning refugee claims from those countries would be fast-tracked without right of appeal. C-31 'flawed and unconstitutional': NDP Earlier Wednesday the NDP's immigration critic, Jinny Sims, signaled her party won't support the bill after a parade of legal experts, human rights advocates and refugees themselves warned the bill will violate domestic and international laws. "Today New Democrats are calling on Conservatives to abandon this legislation and go back to the drawing board," she said. "We believe that the ultimate result of this bill will be to hurt legitimate refugees. Witness after witness has told the committee that C-31 is fundamentally flawed and unconstitutional." When asked if her party would support the bill if the detention provision was dialed back, along with clarification about when people could be deported, Sims said [those measures] "would not go far enough to address the fundamental flaws in this bill." Sims promised to give the government's amendments close consideration in line-by-line study. Sims said the bill's many "draconian" measures would only serve to punish the victims while not improving safety. Michael Bossin, a refugee lawyer and representative of Amnesty International, argued the detention provision would create a legal quagmire. He argued that if the provisions are ultimately thrown out by the courts there would have to be a huge retroactive clean-up of cases. "Will that create a huge expensive mess far worse than the one we are in now?" he asked. "Yes you can count on it." A Commons committee that has been reviewing the bill will move to a clause-by-clause study. That study was completed Thursday and followed by a vote on the amendments. In a majority, the government does not require opposition support to pass the bill. Bill C-31 replaces a former law, the Balanced Refugee Reform Act, which received opposition approval in the last minority parliament but has not yet been implemented. Broadcasters are getting the message loud and clear turn down the volume on commercials by the end of summer. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said Tuesday companies must follow the Advanced Television Systems Committee's standard by Sept. 1 and sync the volume of programming with commercials. "The rules we published bring us a step closer to our goal of eliminating loud TV ads," said Leonard Katz, acting chairman of the CRTC, in a statement. "We have every expectation that the industry will take the necessary steps to meet our deadline and provide relief to viewers." The regulator first announced plans to curb loud commercials in September after hearing complaints from more than 7,000 Canadians. Last year Tory MP Nina Grewal introduced a private member's bill that called on the CRTC to force TV stations to lower the volume on ads.
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is bending to opposition pressure and amending his controversial refugee omnibus bill, C-31. The amendment will introduce a 14-day and six-month review of the detention of so-called "mass arrivals" of refugees. "People have raised concerns about this. We've studied the issue closely as a result of which the government has decided to amend the bill to allow for an initial detention review at 14 days initially and then subsequently at six months," Kenney told reporters Wednesday. The bill originally stipulated a judicial review would only be necessary after those refugee claimants designated as "mass arrivals" by the minister had been in detention for one year. Kenney also introduced another amendment to clarify that the government would not have the power to revoke the permanent residency of successful refugee claimants if conditions improve in their countries of origin, unless it was found they obtained their status through fraudulent means. "The government has no intention of removing permanent residency from bona fide refugees if things have changed in their countries of origin," he said. Even with the amendments Kenney announced Wednesday, the bill still gives the immigration minister sole authority to decide which groups of refugee claimants are "mass arrivals" a term which is not clearly defined in the bill. The measure was sparked by the arrival of two boatloads of Tamil migrants off the coast of Vancouver in recent years. The bill would allow for those cases to be designated retroactively as "mass arrivals." Several legal experts have argued that provision would almost certainly generate costly court challenges because it is inconsistent with the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, the Charter of Rights and Supreme Court precedents. The bill also stipulates that people who

Bart was an average employee at his company before being released suddenly without cause. His company was merged with a competitor and Bart found himself with a new manager. Even though he had a good record and positive performance reviews, he quickly found himself laid-off from the company. The following article provides key strategies for responding to one of the most frequently asked interviewer questions, "Why did you leave (or seeking to leave) your company?"
saying it to another person. Ask a friend to practice interviewing with you. Ask them to ask you this question ("Why did you leave your last company?) and a couple other questions you fear most. Practice until you are comfortable with the words you say and how you deliver them.
Be Succinct
Describe the reason for your departure directly and succinctly. Do not go into great details unless they ask you for the details. The longer you speak on the subject the more suspicious the interviewer will become. For example: When first asked why he left his former company Bart could succinctly state, "My company merged with another firm and the new management wanted to bring in their own team. Prior to the merger I was a strong performer with positive performance reviews."
If you are questioned further about the details, stay with the facts of what happened, what you did, how you felt and what you learned. Interviewers want to know that you were not the problem and to understand how you handled yourself. Don't just state the circumstances of your departure; also add any facts that positively reflect on your performance.
Do not speculate on the motives or feeling of the other people involved in the events of your departure. Focus only on the facts of what happened and what you did.
This is also an opportunity to describe what you learned and how you will handle things differently in the future. Describing what you learned demonstrates that you are a life-long learner and you look on the positive side of most scenarios.
Most of us instinctively sense deception. Look the interviewer in the eyes when responding. This will convey your confidence, communicate that this is the truth and that you have nothing to hide.
Write out your response and practice saying it. First, practice responding out loud to yourself and then practice

This week's scenario is highlighted by your need to find new ways to succeed. Past performance will not carry much weight and will not have any bearing on the current situation. You need to find your voice and figure out how to use it to your best advantage. Before moving ahead on your own, think about ways to unite others. Human emotions cannot rule you, this time. You must try to look at things on a more intellectual plane. Try your best to stay clear of those who try to bring you down to their level. You need to look beyond the immediate to understand how the bigger picture works. Everyone needs to feel secure, some may rely on luck but you have your own strategy in place. In order to succeed, you must first expand your reach beyond here and now. Each step you take now will be bold and relevant. You know what must happen, but your patience is wearing thin. Hasty action now will only put you on shakier ground. Relax and enjoy.
This week's scenario is highlighted by your ability to get back to your basic needs and wants. People with attitude problems shouldn't even come into the equation, stay clear of them. Your dilemma is that everybody wants a piece of you. There's usually a reason for everything that you do, but your creativity may be driven more out of necessity than talent. If you want to try to turn this situation around, you'd better start now. Use the raw materials you have on hand to demonstrate your idea of art and beauty. You'll have no choice but to be yourself when you journey on this new adventure. By week's end, the mysteries will start to wear thin and expose the harsh reality that really exists. You may have to temporarily withdraw from your profession in order to handle this personal matter. Once you finish dealing with the problem, you'll be able to find a lot more compassion from your peers than you ever expected. You'll be able enjoy conversations with people who like to laugh.
This week's scenario is highlighted by your ability to get yourself back on track to the road to success. Recent events have put your emotional and physical well being out of whack. Static energy will only cause you to short out your battery. Simple pleasures will be needed in order to help you to relax. Strong words will only bring strong re-actions. Realize that tempers may be short in those sensitive areas. You need a break from away from extreme solutions to dealing with simple problems. Stay confident in who you are and you'll be ensured a smoother ride. Being in between jobs or relationships can make you feel very isolated. A compromise on your part will restart stalled talks. By combining your resources, you'll be able to find the perfect kind of operation. Your love life has suffered lately and now you need to start melting the heart that you love. You'll be welcomed back with open arms. Your personal life is now closer to where you wanted it to be.

Do your homework
As desperate as you may be for an adult night out, don't let down your guard. 'Parents take too many risks with their sitters. They don't take the time they would in any other situation involving their children.' Heres how to make hiring a babysitter a relatively worry-free experience.
Get multiple references and follow up. They can be from neighbours, teachers, other babysitting clients or the soccer coach. Ask open-ended questions such as, 'Tell me about Sally,' or 'What's she like with other children?' You're trying to get a sense of the patience and maturity level of the sitter. If you like what you hear, set up an interview and watch how the sitter interacts with your children. While maturity and good judgment are key, you also want someone who genuinely likes children and will do fun things with them. Don't hesitate to ask a few scenariostyle questions: 'What would you do if my child had a fever or if someone came to the door'? Check, too, whether the potential sitter has taken a babysitting course. ''At least then he has some basic knowledge about child behaviour, so he knows its not appropriate to give a toddler food to take to bed or he doesn't think. If the prescreening is successful, pay the sitter to watch your children for a few hours while youre there, too. Check in on occasion during the trial run to see how everyone's getting along. If the sitter is on the couch reading a book and ignoring the children, you can pretty much gauge how things will go in your absence.
Dont wait until youre in a jam to start looking for a sitter, then turn to Craigslist. The best place to recruit is among relatives, friends and neighbours. Knowing the sitter's family brings peace of mind. If the parents are trustworthy, then you expect they're raising their kids a certain way, too. When Patricia takes her daughters to drop-ins and their co-op nursery school, she uses the opportunity to chat up the nannies and babysitters, and she makes inquiries at her church. She also makes a point of scouting out potential candidates at her local park. ''There's one girl who is only in Grade 7, but she's always nice and she seems more mature. I'll keep my eye on her.'' Finding a sitter with a younger sibling is a bonus, adds Patricia, who is always looking one step ahead. ''Once they reach 16, you have about six months to a year before they leave you. My hope is that when the older girl is ready to
Review the house rules with your sitter (no reality-based TV shows, for example), preferably with the kids present. Children are always going to be testing. Let's see what we can get away with. That way, you can make sure everyone is on the same page.' Marryn , 20, recalls babysitting a sixyear-old whose parents were ''health nuts.'' When the parents found out she'd shared a Popsicle with their daughter and painted her fingernails princess pink, they flipped out. ''I was just trying to be nice to the little girl,'' says Marryn. ''They really laid out the rules after that!'' Take time to spell out to a fledgling sitter what he can or can't do after the children are tucked into bed: watch TV, use the computer or phone, have a friend over, etc.

British surgeons are all set to conduct next week the world`s first `heart shrinking` trial in humans aimed at combating cardiac failure. The technique will involve electrically stimulating one of the nerves leading to the heart, which it is hoped could shrink the heart and improve life expectancy, says a team at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and The Royal Liverpool University Hospital. The first patient will be operated on next week, after the technique was shown to keep rats and dogs alive for longer, as reported. As the heart loses its ability to pump, it fills with too much blood and becomes stretched over time. The more the heart enlarges, the worse the symptoms. So, surgeons hope to reverse the damage. They will fit a device - similar to a pacemaker - to the vagus nerve which runs to the heart. Surgeons say that the electrical
stimulation should "protect the heart" from the effects of the hormone adrenaline. Adrenaline makes the heart pump harder and faster; this is one of the body`s responses to heart failure - but doctors say it becomes toxic over time and damages the heart further. The idea is that by shielding the heart, it`ll stop enlarging and begin to shrink, say the surgeons. Dr Jay Wright, a consultant cardiologist at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, said, "We`re hoping it will shrink the heart, but it might not be to normal size." He said shrinkage "would lead to improvement in symptoms - we know that the bigger the heart the worse the symptoms. Nearly 100 patients will take part in the trial at 30 hospitals around the world. The first will be Carl Jordan , who used to be a paramedic . He has had several heart attacks which have damaged his heart, causing it to become enlarged.
It is a known fact that eating too much food can cause obesity, but the fear of not having enough food may lead to the same result, a new study has claimed. According to the new study, being worried about not having enough food to feed one`s family, a situation called food insecurity, is common in lowincome families. These families often are overweight, too. "Understanding the reasons why poverty puts families at greater risk of obesity is essential to addressing the epidemic," Rachel Gross, lead author of the study from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and The Children`s Hospital at Montefiore in New York, said. Gross and her colleagues at the New York University School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital Center, interviewed 201 low-income mothers with infants younger than 6 months about their feeding styles, feeding practices and concerns about their child becoming overweight. Studies have shown that feeding patterns leading to obesity often begin in infancy. The mothers primarily were Hispanic, and all participated in the Special
Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The results showed that about one-third of the mothers reported food insecurity. "We found that food insecurity is related to controlling feeding practices, which have been shown to increase child obesity. "These controlling feeding practices involved both restriction, in which parents limit the infant`s intake even if the infant is hungry, and pressuring, in which the parent encourages the infant to eat more even if the infant is full," Gross said. It is believed that when mothers control what an infant eats, it may disrupt the child`s ability to regulate his or her own hunger and fullness, leading to overeating and inappropriate weight gain, she said. Food-insecure mothers also were more concerned about their child becoming overweight than mothers who werent worried about having enough food for their families. "This work suggests that in addition to addressing hunger and malnutrition, it is critical that policy efforts be made to work with food-insecure families to prevent the opposite problem - obesity," she added.

PARIS, the City of Lights, is also the city with the most expensive club sandwich in the world, according to a global survey released by an online travel service. Pit Bull Rescues Unconscious Owner From Speeding Train's Path Near Boston
AN eight-year-old pit bull named Lilly is being hailed a hero after frantically pulling her unconscious owner from train tracks moments before a freight train barreled through. The engineer who stopped the train saw the dog pulling her owner, Christine Spain, away from the tracks around midnight local time May 4 in Shirley, Massachusetts, around 39 miles (63km) northwest of Boston. The train engineer attempted to stop but could not avoid hitting Lilly. Spain was not injured, but Lilly suffered a complete "de-gloving" of her right foot - all of the muscle and skin were gone. Her pelvis was fractured in multiple locations, and she also suffered other internal injuries. But even as police and firefighters arrived at the scene, Lilly stayed by her owner's side. Lilly was taken to an emergency animal hospital in Acton where Boston police officer David Lanteigne, who rescued Lilly three years ago as a therapy dog for his alcoholic mother, picked Lilly up and brought her to Angell Animal Medical Centre in Boston, where emergency veterinarians examined her. Lilly's right front leg could not be saved and had to be amputated, and because of her age, doctors decided not to operate on her pelvis until she had time to recover from the amputation. She had the second surgery last Sunday and was recovering in Angell's Emergency and Critical Care unit in a kennel adorned with pictures, notes and get-well cards brought by her family, friends and neighbors. Because Lilly's medical care likely will run into the thousands of dollars, a fund was set up for donations to help offset her treatment costs.

Telemarketing Fraud
When you send money to people you do not know personally or give personal or financial information to unknown callers, you increase your chances of becoming a victim of telemarketing fraud. Here are some warning signs of telemarketing fraudwhat a caller may tell you: You must act now or the offer wont be good. Youve won a free gift, vacation, or prize. But you have to pay for postage and handling or other charges. You must send money, give a credit card or bank account number, or have a check picked up by courier. You may hear this before you have had a chance to consider the offer carefully. You dont need to check out the company with anyone. The callers say you do not need to speak to anyone including your family, lawyer, accountant, local Better Business Bureau, or consumer
protection agency. You dont need any written information about their company or their references. You cant afford to miss this highprofit, no-risk offer. If you hear these or similar lines from a telephone salesperson, just say no thank you and hang up the telephone. Tips for Avoiding Telemarketing Fraud: Its very difficult to get your money back if youve been cheated over the telephone. Before you buy anything by telephone, remember: Dont buy from an unfamiliar company. Legitimate businesses understand that you want more information about their company and are happy to comply. Always ask for and wait until you receive written material about any offer or charity. If you get brochures about costly investments, ask someone whose financial advice you trust to review them. But, unfortunately, bewarenot everything written down is true. Always check out unfamiliar companies with your local consumer protection agency, Better Business Bureau, state attorney general, the Fraud Information Center, or other watchdog groups. Unfortunately, not all bad
businesses can be identified through these organizations. Obtain a salespersons name, business identity, telephone number, street address, mailing address, and business license number before you transact business. Some con artists give out false names, telephone numbers, addresses, and business license numbers. Verify the accuracy of these items. Before you give money to a charity or make an investment, find out what percentage of the money is paid in commissions and what percentage actually goes to the charity or investment. Before you send money, ask yourself a simple question. What guarantee do I really have that this solicitor will use my money in the manner we agreed upon? Dont pay in advance for services. Pay services only after they are delivered. Be wary of companies that want to send a messenger to your home to pick up money, claiming it is part of their service to you. In reality, they are taking your money without leaving any trace of who they are or where they can be reached. Always take your time making a decision. Legitimate companies wont pressure you to make a snap
decision. Dont pay for a free prize. If a caller tells you the payment is for taxes, he or she is violating federal law. Before you receive your next sales pitch, decide what your limits are the kinds of financial information you will and wont give out on the telephone. Be sure to talk over big investments offered by telephone salespeople with a trusted friend, family member, or financial advisor. Its never rude to wait and think about an offer. Never respond to an offer you dont understand thoroughly. Never send money or give out personal information such as credit card numbers and expiration dates, bank account numbers, dates of birth, or social security numbers to unfamiliar companies or unknown persons. Be aware that your personal information is often brokered to telemarketers through third parties. If you have been victimized once, be wary of persons who call offering to help you recover your losses for a fee paid in advance. If you have information about a fraud, report it to police or federal law enforcement agencies.

To clean the outside, be sure to pay attention to all the cords. Depending on the surface, use furniture polish or a damp microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and smudges. Also, look to see if there are old, unused, or broken games, videos, tapes, CDs, and DVDs. Toss them. Don't forget to dust the top. To quick-clean gunk and grime from remotes, use an alcohol-based hand wipe or microfiber cloth lightly dampened only with water, but do not allow the water or alcohol to seep into the control. First, use a damp paper towel to initially clean up accumulated dust and grime, especially around back and underneath. Pay close attention to the base and the
It's time to get your medicine cabinet in order. Take everything out, including over-the-counter medicines, prescriptions, and makeup. Go through each item and toss out outdated medicine or makeup. Clean each shelf. Wipe off all jars and bottles using a damp paper towel or microfiber cloth (rubbing alcohol works great on makeup bottles). Be sure to clean the shelves, then replace items in like groups. Why not put down some sturdy or moisture-proof shelf paper if you
Today's mission: to clean underneath the bathroom sink. First put down several large, heavy bath towels to protect the floor. Take everything out and sort out all items. Do you need several curling irons, hair dryers, or shavers? Remove bottles with tiny bits left in them. Before putting everything back in, wipe all inside surfaces and check the plumbing for leaks. To reorganize items, place them in double revolving trays, small stackable plastic shelves, or plastic bins or buckets.

2012 Scion iQ
character and has to be wrung to its 6000-rpm redline to whip up the full 94 horses. The modest 89 lb-ft of torque is available a bit lower peak, at 4400 rpm. But those pattering pound-feet travel through that cursed CVT. Other markets in which the iQ is sold as a Toyotaor as the shameful Cygnetare blessed with a manual transmission, but here in North America theres no choice. So jam a brick on the accelerator, and the iQs little engine runs to about four grand and sticks there as the car slowly engineers forward progress with a drone. Every time the iQ is about to do something entertaining, the CVT
intrudes and spoils it. Dive into a corner, the tires bite andthe transmission induces its drone of defeat and the car practically falls on its nose. Scion says the iQ will run from 0 to 60 mph in 11.8 seconds, but a better estimate might be a week. Scions always seem to promise more fun than they deliver. (We hope the upcoming FR-Sbased coupe will prove different.) But tune the iQs front struts and rear torsion beam a bit, bolt on some righteous rubber, tweak the engine to about 130 hp, give it a decent transmission, and this car could be a point-and-squirt legend. Right now, its only frustratingly clever.
Heres what the new Scion iQ has going for it: Its tiny outside, but not so small inside. Four people can wedge in when necessary. Its good-looking, the interior design is about the best of any cheap car, and the seats are comfortable. The suspension is simple, but it works well, and the precise steering and its size make the iQ super easy to park. And although the frontmounted 1.3-liter engine makes 94 hp, the iQ weighs just a cheerleader more than a ton. Heres whats wrong with the new Scion iQ: Its stuck with a continuously variable transmission that drains the fun out of it. Every. Single. Drop. The Price Is Certainly Premium Toyotaokay, Sciondescribes the iQ as a premium micro-subcompact and will sell it as such when it goes on sale in October as a $15,995 singlespec model backed by a dealer-installed accessory catalog. Thats a ton of cash when you consider the plethora of larger and more practical cars available for less money, among them the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, and Kia Soul. But, hey, at least the iQ costs less than the mechanically identical Aston Martin Cygnet. The Scion does, however, look substantial and well detailed for a dinkclass runabout. The bumper covers are painted and fit tightly, the headlights are complex units, there are turn-signal lights integrated into the bottom of the side mirrors, and the 175/60-16 tires fill out the wheel wells. Even the wheel covers on the steel wheels almost plausibly pass for metal. Besides its length120.1 inches, 14.0 longer than a Smart Fortwo but a substantial 26.5 shorter than a Mini Cooperand 78.7-inch wheelbase, little about the iQ
screams cheap. Inside, the driver faces a thick, flatbottomed, three-spoke steering wheel covered in red-stitched leather and an instrument panel that nestles the tach in the lower right quadrant of the speedometer. And theres an information screen to the left of those. Its a compact, logical, and legible arrangement. The center stack has three simple knobs for controlling the HVAC system and is capped by a pod that contains a doubleDIN-size Pioneer audio head unit. If a buyer doesnt like the standard stereo, Scion will have a dealer-swappable upgraded Pioneer unit and a navigation system available. The thin-shelled, fabric-covered front seats sort of bend around any awkward body shape. The passenger-side frontseat rails are mounted slightly forward of the drivers, and the dashboard on that side is slightly forward, too. The arrangement affords a bit more legroom for right-side passengers. A flotsam tray under the passenger seat is particularly useful if that seats occupant is a drooler. Even with the passenger seat thrown forward for ingress, its a chore to get to the rear seat. Its not roomy back there, but that theres any space at all is a miracle of packaging efficiency and owes something to the engine placement. So the kids feel claustrophobic looking through the pie-slice rear windows? At least theres an innovative rear-window airbag to protect their heads in a collision. Damn, Dirty CVT The 1.3-liter four has a 16-valve DOHC head, variable valve timing, and an aggressive 11.5:1 compression ratio, but it doesnt have much sporting

Sure, you have a lot going on this season, but that's exactly why you should take more breaks. A little downtime is all you need to recharge your body and look your best. Here's how.
Here is a mother that wanted a very best for her children ( Disciples of Jesus who,s names were James and John ) There mother wanted the very best for her sons . As usual any mother would like her children to get the very best of their, Should it be School, Studies, Sports, Work Force, Marriage or in any other phase of life for them to do well. Here a mother of John and James asked Jesus to have a place for her two children in the kingdom of Heaven, for Jesus to have a place for them one to sit on his right hand side and the other on the left hand side..She did not ask anything for herself but the very best for her children. That what is the LOVE OF MOTHER is all about. First to rise and last to sleep, makes sure they are all fed, clothed and daily needs are taken care of. In our pains and sorrows she is available to wipe our tears and comfort us in difficult times. And at times does becomes like a servant. She does all for us for FREE. Many will be visiting grave sites and laying flowers. Just a suggestion . Why not visit her while she is alive, Bring her flowers now and share the love and joy with her in Jesus Christ this Mothers Day.. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY. GOOD NEWS ASSEMBLY FOR JESUS 5441 125TH AVE. SURREY B C Pastor James Kumar.
-Revitalize
Take a mental vacation. Close your eyes and picture yourself in a serene setting that soothes you (like catching a breathtaking view from the top of a mountain). Doing this for just five minutes can boost your energy. If you're on the road, make a pit stop at a local park and step out into nature to clear your mind.
-Energize
The chill of winter may be gone, but that doesn't mean your luminous colour has to fade with the season. With the right products and techniques, you can keep that straight-from-the-shore look long after the sun has set on summer.
Brighten up
Free up some minutes to get active! Buy a week's supply of paper plates, cups and plastic tableware and give up doing dishes. Use the extra time for stress-reducing exercises: Go for early morning walks and enjoy the solitude at the start of your day. Follow up with after-dinner strolls or bike rides.
Regain radiance with a moisturizer that is "light-effective." Most are infused with antioxidants to keep skin healthy, but the real magic ingredients are lightweight 3-D particles that diffuse light. The effect? A brighter, more even skin tone. When light bounces off your skin, fine lines are softened and minor flaws become less noticeable with or without make-up.
-Hydrate
Instead of serving the usual cider and eggnog, try a glass of sparkling water garnished with frozen strawberries and fresh lime. Or get a healthy boost from a cup of tea. Natural tea is loaded with flavonoid antioxidants, the same compound found in fruits and vegetables.*
-Refresh
For a subtle, sun-kissed kick, apply bronzing lotion or powder to your face and neck. Smooth it all over for a just-back-from-vacation look, or simply highlight cheeks and nose for a beauty boost. For a longer-term fix, opt for sunless face tanners-the faux glow lasts about a week.
After a long day of holiday shopping, soothe pinched, aching feet with a custom-blended footbath. In a large bowl, mix your favorite moisturizing body wash, Epsom salts and warm water. As you ease your feet into the bath, let the events of the day fade away. * Tea is not a replacement for fruits and vegetables.
When you illuminate your eyelids, it brightens up your whole face. First, use concealer under the eyes to lighten circles. Then, dab a pale, opalescent shimmer cream onto the innermost corners of your eyes to bring them to life. Finish by applying a bright, creamcoloured shadow across the lids. Pinks work best for pale skin tones while neutral shades are better for darker complexions.
3. Soak
7. Polish
10 Minute Rechargers
Fill a bucket or large bowl with warm water and Epsom salts. Find a comfy chair and a good magazine and relax for at least 15 minutes. Rinse feet in clean, warm water and pat dry.
4. Smooth
No doubt about it - winter wreaks havoc on our skin, hair, nails and especially our feet. Wake them from winter hibernation with a home pedicure and show them the light of spring days. Tips for a home pedicure
Use a pumice stone to smooth away rough spots on toes, heels and the balls of feet. (Doing this after every shower helps keep your feet in shape.)
5. Neaten
Polishing toes is easier with a foam toe separator available at most dollar stores. Apply a clear base coat to help keep your nails from absorbing the pigments from the polish, two coats of colour and a clear topcoat. In a hurry? Try two coats of clear polish for an easy, elegant look. If you paint outside the lines, dip a Q-tips cotton swab in nail polish remover and wipe off the stray polish.

Clean off old nail polish using a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover. For smaller toenails, a Q-tips cotton swab is the perfect tool. Self-care isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. Boost your well being with these
Using an orangewood stick, gently push back cuticles. Never cut the cuticle; only trim hangnails.
6. Moisturize
2. Trim
Cut nails straight across using toenail clippers. File, if necessary, to smooth
Massage an extra-rich moisturizer like Vaseline Intensive Care into your toes, ankles, soles even calves to improve circulation, relieve fatigue, and energize. Aaahh!

The NHL playoffs are taking shape, and the semifinals are almost set. With that being said, there is one team that has looked unstoppable this postseason. That team is the Los Angeles Kings and it looks like they won't be stopped anytime soon. They have had the toughest road to get to where they are so far. More than that, they have done it in impressive fashion. In the first round, they easily knocked off the top-ranked Vancouver Canucks. Despite losing one game, beating the best team in the Western Conference in five games in the first round is impressive. Vancouver could never get anything going as they were constantly sent packing by Jonathan Quick's continued brilliance in the net. The most goals they were able to manage in a game was three, and that was in their winning
NHL Playoffs 2012: Why The Los Angeles Kings Won't Be Stopped
effort. The Kings then went on to dominate the second-ranked St. Louis Blues. Yes, I said dominate. By dominate, I mean they swept them. The Kings swept a team who was just as good in the net as themselves. They even scored five goals one game on the stonewall goaltending of St. Louis. And again, Quick was brilliant in the net. He never gave up more than two goals, which is a testament to his skill level as an NHL goaltender. The Kings have been all-around fantastic in the playoffs. They have received good production from their offensive players as well, as it has not all been credited to Quick. Dustin Brown is having a great playoff run this year, putting in six goals thus far. He also leads the team in points at 11, which is a good marketing tool for him in the offseason. Mike Richards has been valuable on the faceoff, winning over 50 percent of the face-offs he has competed in. He has also produced, putting in three goals of his own. Anze Kopitar has produced with his stick and, surprisingly, his fists this postseason. In addition to getting into a fight in the first round of the playoffs, Kopitar has three goals and 10 points. Drew Doughty and the defense have played well in front of Quick, which has also contributed to the low goal numbers by the opposition. If they continue to play this way, there is no stopping the Kings. So, the Kings will play the Phoenix Coyotes in the Western Conference finals. The Coyotes have a goalie who is also hot in Mike Smith, but nobody is on the level of Quick. The Coyotes have been more than impressive this postseason, but are running into a runaway train in the Kings. I have the Kings winning the
series in five games. The Kings will go on to the Stanley Cup Finals and play either the New Jersey Devils or the New York Rangers (who, I believe, will beat the Washington Capitals). The Kings will beat either of these teams, as their all-around attack has been too much for any team. In the end, Lord Stanley's Cup will go to Los Angeles and Quick will earn his Conn Smythe Trophy. The Kings will have made an unlikely run at the crown and it will go down in history as one of the best playoff runs ever.

Mike Gillis Agree To Contract Extension
Mike Gillis will continue to call the shots for the Vancouver Canucks. The club has agreed to a contract extension with Gillis, who has served as the team's president and general manager for the past four seasons. "I am very pleased to be signing this extension to remain the president & general manager of the Vancouver Canucks," Gillis said in a release. "I am proud of the work our entire organization has done these past four years and look forward to continuing to build on our success. We are driven every day to try and win the Stanley Cup and will continue to focus on being a strong organization both on and off of the ice." Gillis has led the Canucks to back-toback Presidents' Trophies as the top team during the regular season, and earned some praise from the Canucks' brass. "This is a significant announcement for our hockey club," said Francesco Aquilini, chairman of Canucks Sports & Entertainment. "These past four years have been the most successful in Canucks history. Mike and his management team have done an excellent job to position us for long term success on and off of the ice. We believe Mike's presence in this organization is important to the long term success of this hockey club and we are confident that we will continue to compete at the highest level under his leadership." Vancouver lost in Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup final to the Boston Bruins before bowing out in the first round of this year's playoffs to the eighth-seeded Los Angeles Kings. Among the tasks Gillis will have to deal with over the summer are the futures of goaltender Roberto Luongo and head coach Alain Vigneault.
