Select a Keyword.
Keywords help you search for notes once you have transferred them to your PC. Start by marking them here. Select a Keyword from your writing sample. For purposes of this example, choose a common word. 1 Tap the Keyword button once. The display prompts: Circle Keyword to be selected, or tap again for Bookmark. 2 Draw a circle around a word in your sample. Make sure that all of the ink you want to Keyword is inside the circle. 3 CrossPad beeps (if the beeper is activated) to signal that the Keyword has been captured. The display briefly signals: Keyword Selected! There will be more about this important feature later in this guide.
Note: Numbering pages is very important. It helps you synchronize your paper notes and digital notes.
Add a Bookmark.
Bookmarks provide a way to invisibly tag a page of your digital notes, to signal the end of a section or to otherwise mark a page so you can locate it later. Tap the Keyword button twice. CrossPad prompts: Insert Bookmark? Tap OK. CrossPad confirms: Bookmark Inserted There will be more about this important feature later in this guide.

Sketch something.
Sometimes even a basic diagram, sketch or chart says more than words ever could about an idea. Sketches are a simple, practical way to show someone else what you are thinking and aid recall by creating visual markers for key points. 1 Create a drawing with your digital pen in Box A. 2 Add a caption in the blanks provided. 3 Tap Keyword then circle a word in your caption. 4 The beep indicates that this Keyword has been selected.

Specifying Notebooks.
To get you started, a default Notebook was created for you based on information you provided when installing Ink Manager. You should see that Notebook name now in the Title Bar at the top of your screen. There are a number of options available for directing digital note transfers into one or another Notebook. Using Ink Manager preferences and commands, you can create, open, or append to multiple Notebooks. Ink Manager uses the settings in the Notebook tab (File Preferences Notebook), shown below, to determine where to place data you want to transfer. Make your choice before initiating the transfer.
2 Click the Next tool to move ahead to the second and third pages of your Notebook. You should see the sketches you made there. 3 Click the First tool to move back to page 1. Note: You can also use the Page Up and Page Down keys on your keyboard to move between Notebook pages.
Note: These options are fully explained in the CrossPad User Guide, Section 8, and on-line help.

You will notice that you could have selected one of several other search targets. Once a criterion is selected, all of the navigational tools move you between entries of that type. See the User Guide for more about these other navigation criteria. 2 Click the Go to tool next to Bookmark in the Navigation box. You should see a menu listing the Bookmarks that you created in your sample pages earlier in this guide. 3 Click on the second entry. This action should move you to the third page of your Notebook where that Bookmark is located. 4 Use the Prev and Next tools to move between the two Bookmarks. If this were a large document with fewer Bookmarks than pages, you could use this tool to jump quickly between Bookmarks across many pages in your Notebook.
If you discover words or phrases in your Notebook that you would like to be able to find by Keyword, but didnt mark on your CrossPad originally, you can use Ink Manager tools to add them as Keywords on your PC. 1 Select a word by using the Select tool to drag a box around it. 2 Click the Keyword tool. 3 A window opens where you can verify the recognition for that word, correct it, or add other search terms. 4 Click OK to add this Keyword to your list of searchable markers. Note: Digital ink associated with a Keyword displays in blue.

Battery life. The Cross digital pen requires one alkaline AAAA battery. It is shipped with a battery already installed. With normal daily use, this battery will last an average of 6 to 12 months. AAAA batteries can be purchased at many drug and grocery stores and most electronics or camera stores.
Replacing the ink cartridge. The replacement cartridge tray is located along the upper left edge of the CrossPad and includes five refill cartridges. Each has enough ink for up to eighty memo-size pages of single-spaced notes. To replace the ink cartridge, slip the metal v-notch on the refill cartridge tray beneath the base of the cartridge in the pen and gently lift it from the pens front section. Unsnap a refill cartridge from the tray and insert it manually in the pen tip. Then press the cartridge tip firmly against a hard surface until it snaps into place. Transmitter. The transmitter electronics should only be removed from the pen body by a Cross technician. The assembly is exposed when you change the battery and should be treated very carefully.
CrossPad
Battery life. CrossPad requires four AAA alkaline batteries. With normal daily use a battery set will last an average of 3 to 4 months. AAA batteries can be purchased at most drug and grocery stores. Care and Cleaning. Repeated tapping of CrossPad buttons will leave some ink residue on the surface of your CrossPad. Clean it with a soft cloth and an alcohol-based window cleaner. Low battery indicators. The battery indicator is part of the main CrossPad display and will help you keep track of remaining battery power. System messages will begin to appear when the power level falls to 20%. Flash ROM. While it is always a good idea to transfer your digital notes prior to changing the batteries, the flash ROM in the CrossPad is designed to preserve your data even when there is no power signal present. Replacing the batteries. To replace the batteries, press the housing release button (the battery housing will pop out slightly). Remove the housing and replace the batteries following the positive (+) and negative (-) indicators. Slide the housing into place until it snaps. Automatic shutdown. CrossPad turns off if you have not transmitted any digital ink in the previous 60 minutes. You will get a system alert immediately before this happens (one long beep). Tap your pen anywhere on CrossPad to continue. If CrossPad turns itself off, simply press the On/Off button once for Off and then back On again.

The Supplemental Handwriting Guide in this package introduces the Ink Manager Trainer software. This utility provides exercises you will use to improve the way Ink Manager recognizes your handwriting. When you take the time to create a profile for your writing style you can improve the recognition accuracy for any handwriting you convert to text. Ink Manager Trainer is divided into a series of training sets. You can complete the training sets in groups or one at a time over a period of time, whichever is more convenient. If you intend to make frequent use of the recognition capability of the software, we strongly recommend that you complete the two Basic Training sets in the Supplemental Handwriting Guide.
