Try the CrossWriter digital pen.

The CrossPad is actually a system of two elements, a digital pen that writes in traditional ink while transmitting digital ink and a digitizing notepad that receives and stores those signals. The CrossWriter digital pen is a fine writing instrument in the Cross tradition. While it feels like a traditional pen, there is more here than meets the eye. This pens special features make it unlike any other.

Orientation Move between pages.

The Page Backward and Page Forward buttons move you back and forth, one page at a time, in your digital notes. The display changes to indicate the number of the page you are on. It is quite important to keep your written page and your digital page aligned as you will see later. Try moving between pages. The initial display should show page 1. If it does not, see the instructions on page 10 of this guide for erasing your CrossPad, then return here. Tap Page Forward. Remember that the first tap often turns the pen on. You may need to tap again. Because you have not made any marks on page 1, the system will ask you to confirm the choice: The current page is Blank! Do you wish to insert a Blank page? This is one way CrossPad helps ensure that your written pages and digital pages remain aligned. Tap OK. The display changes to page 2. Tap Page Backward. The display changes back to page 1.

Review CrossPad menus.

Menus are used to set system preferences and control system actions. Repeatedly tapping the Menu button with your digital pen moves you through the choices. Try it. Tap Cancel at any time to exit. A chart in the last section of this Orientation Guide provides a convenient map of all the menu screens you may encounter when using your CrossPad and transferring files (page 22). A second chart (page 23) reviews the various reasons the CrossPad beeps to alert you to system conditions or confirm user actions.

Installing the IBM Ink Manager software.

Ink Manager is the software that resides on your PC. It is referred to frequently in this guide. The IBM Ink Manager for CrossPad CD-ROM includes the software you need to upload digital notes from your CrossPad to your PC and to manage your notes once they are transferred. Take a moment now to load the software so it is ready when you need it to practice uploading notes.

Orientation Insert the Ink Manager CD-ROM.

The Ink Manager CD-ROM includes an installation wizard that automatically installs the software you will need to run Ink Manager on your PC and organize your notes. 1 Turn your PC on. 2 Place the Ink Manager CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive of your PC and close the drawer. The Windows auto-run feature will prompt you for installation. If nothing happens, read Troubleshooting Tips, Section 17, in your User Guide. 3 Follow the Instructions on the screen to install IBM Ink Manager. You will be given the option during installation to go on-line and complete your registration on the Cross Pen Computing Group web site. If you have a modem attached to your PC, you can do this now. If you would prefer to register on-line later, use your Internet browser to go to www.cross-pcg.com/registration/ pagereg.html. If you do not have a modem, fill out and return the warranty registration card provided. During installation, IBM Ink Manager takes the first step toward establishing a user profile for your handwriting by asking you to indicate your handwriting style (print or script, uppercase, lowercase or mixed). See the enclosed Supplemental Handwriting Guide for more about this feature.

Review the system requirements.

IBM Ink Manager requires certain PC system capabilities (listed below). We also recommend some configurations to help you get the most from the software. Creating digital notes.

Turn the CrossPad on.
Your CrossPad should still be on. If it is off, slide the On/Off switch up into the On position. The CrossPad display will appear and show you positioned at page 1. If you had already recorded digital notes when you last turned the CrossPad off, the display would show the last page number selected. If your CrossPad displays anything other than 1 on a page with no recorded digital ink, take a moment to erase it. Try it even if you do have an empty CrossPad, just to practice.

Keywords help you search for notes once you have transferred them to your PC. Start by marking them here. Select a Keyword from your writing sample. For purposes of this example, choose a common word. 1 Tap the Keyword button once. The display prompts: Circle Keyword to be selected, or tap again for Bookmark. 2 Draw a circle around a word in your sample. Make sure that all of the ink you want to Keyword is inside the circle. 3 CrossPad beeps (if the beeper is activated) to signal that the Keyword has been captured. The display briefly signals: Keyword Selected! There will be more about this important feature later in this guide.

Note: Numbering pages is very important. It helps you synchronize your paper notes and digital notes.

Create a writing sample.

Fill in the blanks provided below with your CrossWriter digital pen. Write the way you always write. Big or small. Print or script. CrossPad will capture any kind of pen stroke you create. Note: The CrossWriter digital pen transmits digital ink when writing pressure activates the pen transmitter. Look for the icon that indicates your CrossPad is receiving digital ink. If it does not appear as you write, you may not be writing with enough pressure, or your pen battery may be depleted. Also check to make sure that the front end of the pen is screwed together tightly.

Transferring digital notes to your PC.

Follow these steps to transfer the digital notes you just created to your PC. You will need the serial transfer cable from your CrossPad and your PC.

Orientation Connect the cable to your CrossPad.

Insert the cables small connector into the CrossPad COM port with the Cross logo facing up.

14

Connect the serial transfer cable to your PC.

Connect the larger end of the cable to an available COM port on your PC. Tighten the screws to secure it. If you are already using your ports for a modem or other peripherals, you will need to disconnect one of these devices when using the CrossPad serial transfer cable. If you have more than one COM port, make a note of which port you use (typically COM1 or COM2), so that you can designate that port in the Ink Transfer software you will configure next.

Configure Ink Transfer for the selected port.

If you have more than one COM port, Ink Transfer, a digital note upload utility installed when you loaded your software, needs to know which port you have selected. 1 Open the Ink Transfer utility from the Windows taskbar by double-clicking on the Ink Transfer pen-nib icon. Note: If the serial port has not yet been properly configured, there will be a red prohibited overlay on the icon. 2 Select Serial Port Configure. 3 Specify the port to which you connected the serial transfer cable on your PC (generally COM1 or COM2). 4 Select a Baud Rate (generally 115200). Note: The communication speed on your CrossPad must match this setting. Use the CrossPad Menu button to check or change this setting. 5 Click OK.

FYI
Press the serial transfer cable connector firmly into the CrossPad COM port. Watch this connection carefully to make sure that the cable doesnt accidentally pull free.

1 Tap the Menu button on your CrossPad with your digital pen. The first menu choice Upload Ink? will appear. Reminder: If your pen has been idle for longer than 5 minutes you need to tap once to turn the pen on and then again to make a selection. 2 Tap the OK button. Ink Transfer launches automatically when it senses incoming digital notes. While the transfer is in progress the CrossPad display indicates Transmitting... and the PC monitor displays a progress bar that tracks the transfer. This bar disappears quickly when transferring a small sample of digital notes. Note: The CrossPad can not capture any digital ink while a transfer is in progress. If you see the message UPLOAD FAILED! on the CrossPad display, change the baud rate on your CrossPad to 38.4K, and repeat the steps on this page. Check also to see that both COM port connections are secure and that Ink Transfer is running. When the transfer is complete, the Ink Manager application launches automatically and the CrossPad display indicates Upload Successful! Erase CrossPad? 3 Tap the OK button to erase. CrossPad is now ready to capture new notes.

15

Once you erase your digital notes they can not be restored, so CrossPad displays: Tap OK again to Erase CrossPad, to confirm your intentions. 4 Tap the OK button a second time to confirm.

Confirm your Keywords.

Confirmation is the process of verifying or modifying the Keyword text assigned to the digital ink words you marked as Keywords. Ink Transfer includes the option to confirm Keywords you have marked in your digital notes immediately upon transfer. Confirmation begins with the Keyword(s) Confirmation dialog box. In it, you can view each Keyword by clicking the left and right arrow keys. To change a Keyword, edit the text directly or click the down-arrow key to view and select an alternate word. After making changes, click the Accept All button. Take a moment to confirm or correct the Keywords in your sample transfer. Click the Help button for additional on-line help should you need it.

The screen remaining on your desktop after the Keyword(s) Confirmation box is closed is the primary window of the IBM Ink Manager application. Turn to the next page of this guide for more information about this software.

Creating and using Notebooks.

Once transferred, digital notes are placed in Notebook documents. Notebooks store digital ink and other data. They are a flexible, dynamic, archiving system for managing digital ink on your PC.

Orientation

17

Moving between Notebook pages.

Now that you know a bit more about how Ink Manager works, use some of the software tools to traverse your Notebook. 1 Select Page as your navigation criterion in the Navigation Box (if that is not already the current selection).

Specifying Notebooks.
To get you started, a default Notebook was created for you based on information you provided when installing Ink Manager. You should see that Notebook name now in the Title Bar at the top of your screen. There are a number of options available for directing digital note transfers into one or another Notebook. Using Ink Manager preferences and commands, you can create, open, or append to multiple Notebooks. Ink Manager uses the settings in the Notebook tab (File Preferences Notebook), shown below, to determine where to place data you want to transfer. Make your choice before initiating the transfer.

2 Click the Next tool to move ahead to the second and third pages of your Notebook. You should see the sketches you made there. 3 Click the First tool to move back to page 1. Note: You can also use the Page Up and Page Down keys on your keyboard to move between Notebook pages.

Note: These options are fully explained in the CrossPad User Guide, Section 8, and on-line help.

Orientation Reviewing Bookmarks

1 Click the pull-down menu in the Navigation box on the toolbar and select Bookmarks as your navigation criterion.

18

Adding Keywords in Ink Manager.

A Keyword is a word or phrase you designate to mark a section of notes for later retrieval. You can search your notes by Keyword all your notes (across notebooks) or just a specific notebook. There are two ways to create Keywords (and Bookmarks): On your CrossPad (when you circle them in your notes and mark them with the Keyword button), and on your PC (when you use Ink Manager features to add or modify Keyword selections).

You will notice that you could have selected one of several other search targets. Once a criterion is selected, all of the navigational tools move you between entries of that type. See the User Guide for more about these other navigation criteria. 2 Click the Go to tool next to Bookmark in the Navigation box. You should see a menu listing the Bookmarks that you created in your sample pages earlier in this guide. 3 Click on the second entry. This action should move you to the third page of your Notebook where that Bookmark is located. 4 Use the Prev and Next tools to move between the two Bookmarks. If this were a large document with fewer Bookmarks than pages, you could use this tool to jump quickly between Bookmarks across many pages in your Notebook.

If you discover words or phrases in your Notebook that you would like to be able to find by Keyword, but didnt mark on your CrossPad originally, you can use Ink Manager tools to add them as Keywords on your PC. 1 Select a word by using the Select tool to drag a box around it. 2 Click the Keyword tool. 3 A window opens where you can verify the recognition for that word, correct it, or add other search terms. 4 Click OK to add this Keyword to your list of searchable markers. Note: Digital ink associated with a Keyword displays in blue.

Orientation Cutting and pasting digital ink on different Notebook pages.

Words and images you see in your Notebook are comprised of digital ink. They can be cut or copied to your clipboard and pasted elsewhere in a Notebook that you are organizing, or into virtually any other type of Windows document. 1 First, make sure that the Navigation box criterion is set to Page. 2 Click the First tool to move back to page 1 of your document. 3 Click the Select tool and drag a box around your signature or a block, section, or group of digital ink strokes. Only those strokes that are completely within the box will be selected. You can tell an object is selected when it appears in a black field. 4 Click the Cut tool. You can tell the object has been cut and placed on your clipboard because it is no longer visible. 5 Click the Next tool to move to page 2 of your document. 6 Click the Paste tool and the object you cut is pasted in the same position on this page as it was on its original page. Move it from that position with the Select tool. 7 Click the Undo tool and the object is returned to its previous position. While this edit simply went from page to page, you could just have easily gone from Notebook to Notebook or from Ink Manager to another Windows application.

19

Pasting digital ink into other applications.

Try pasting your signature (if it is still on your clipboard) into another application on your desktop, WordPad for example. Open WordPad. Select Start Programs Accessories WordPad. Open an existing document or a new page. Paste your signature into that document. Once it is pasted in, you can easily move the element around, rescale or delete it.

Exporting digital ink in other file formats.

You can export words, sketches, diagrams and other digital ink strokes from Ink Manager in formats you specify for use in other applications. This feature is only available in Thumbnail View. Ink Manager can save .NBK format notebook pages as .BMP (bitmapped), .TIF (Tagged Image File Format, .JPG (Joint Photography Exports Group), .PNG or .PS (Postscript) formats. 1 Select View Thumbnail. 2 Click on a page or sequence of pages (Shift-Select) that you want to save in the new format. (They should appear highlighted on your screen.) 3 Choose Save Pages from the File menu (or Right-Click). 4 In the window that appears, type in a name for the new file you are creating, indicate the format you prefer, and specify a destination on your PC for the new file. 5 Click Save.

SEE ALSO
User Guide Section 9

FYI
Digital ink pasted into other applications has the characteristics of a bitmapped image.

Orientation Adding comments.

Each Notebook has a Reports Window where you can type additions to your handwritten notes. In order to maximize the viewing area of your Notebook page, this window is not open by default. You may set it to display all the time if you prefer. 1 If this window is not open on your screen, select View Reports Window to open it. 2 Click the Notebook Description tab in the Reports Window. 3 Begin typing in the window. The comments you create in the Notebook Description become part of that Notebook. Just as with Keywords, you can search among several Notebooks that contain the desired text in their respective Notebook Descriptions.

20

Converting words or phrases to text.

Handwriting recognition is a feature of the Ink Manager software. Try recognizing some of your digital ink. 1 Click the Select tool and drag a box around a word or phrase on page 1 that you want to convert to text. The selected text will appear in a black rectangle. 2 Select Ink Recognize from the menu bar. The Busy (hourglass) cursor means that Ink Manager is processing your handwriting. When recognition is done, the text from your handwriting will appear in the Reports Window. Note that the Recognition Results tab in the Reports Window is now highlighted. You can edit this text just as you can edit comments in the Notebook Description tab. You can also copy and paste this text into virtually any Windows application. Depending upon the legibility of your handwriting, Ink Manager may be able to recognize your writing rather well using its default settings. But Ink Managers transcription tools work best when you take the time to train them to recognize your particular handwriting style. The Supplemental Handwriting Guide that accompanies this Orientation Guide is devoted to teaching the software to recognize your handwriting with more accuracy.

The Find In Notebooks tab shows results of searches conducted for Keywords or text in your Notebooks. If there are several occurrences, you can review them here and double-click an entry to load the corresponding Notebook and view that text.

SEE ALSO
User Guide Section 10

FYI
Ink Manager displays an upside down question mark in the recognition window when it is unable to provide a reasonable transcription or alternate for a word in your digital note sample.

Troubleshooting and maintenance.

CrossWriter Digital Pen
Replacing the battery. To replace the battery, unscrew the barrel from the front section and remove the old battery. Slip the new battery into the barrel, negative (-) end first, so that the positive (+) end makes contact with the transmitter. Then tightly re-seal the pen body. Low battery indicators. When the pen is transmitting properly on the writing surface, a pen icon will appear on the CrossPad display window. If you do not see this indicator, you may need to replace the battery, or you may not be pressing hard enough to trigger the microswitch in the pen tip. Automatic shutdown. When the pen has been idle for 5 minutes, the transmitter turns itself off to conserve battery power. To turn the pen on, simply tap anywhere on CrossPad with the pen tip. If you are selecting a button with a pen that you are turning on, you need to tap the button twice once to turn the pen on, and again to make the selection.

Battery life. The Cross digital pen requires one alkaline AAAA battery. It is shipped with a battery already installed. With normal daily use, this battery will last an average of 6 to 12 months. AAAA batteries can be purchased at many drug and grocery stores and most electronics or camera stores.

Replacing the ink cartridge. The replacement cartridge tray is located along the upper left edge of the CrossPad and includes five refill cartridges. Each has enough ink for up to eighty memo-size pages of single-spaced notes. To replace the ink cartridge, slip the metal v-notch on the refill cartridge tray beneath the base of the cartridge in the pen and gently lift it from the pens front section. Unsnap a refill cartridge from the tray and insert it manually in the pen tip. Then press the cartridge tip firmly against a hard surface until it snaps into place. Transmitter. The transmitter electronics should only be removed from the pen body by a Cross technician. The assembly is exposed when you change the battery and should be treated very carefully.

CrossPad
Battery life. CrossPad requires four AAA alkaline batteries. With normal daily use a battery set will last an average of 3 to 4 months. AAA batteries can be purchased at most drug and grocery stores. Care and Cleaning. Repeated tapping of CrossPad buttons will leave some ink residue on the surface of your CrossPad. Clean it with a soft cloth and an alcohol-based window cleaner. Low battery indicators. The battery indicator is part of the main CrossPad display and will help you keep track of remaining battery power. System messages will begin to appear when the power level falls to 20%. Flash ROM. While it is always a good idea to transfer your digital notes prior to changing the batteries, the flash ROM in the CrossPad is designed to preserve your data even when there is no power signal present. Replacing the batteries. To replace the batteries, press the housing release button (the battery housing will pop out slightly). Remove the housing and replace the batteries following the positive (+) and negative (-) indicators. Slide the housing into place until it snaps. Automatic shutdown. CrossPad turns off if you have not transmitted any digital ink in the previous 60 minutes. You will get a system alert immediately before this happens (one long beep). Tap your pen anywhere on CrossPad to continue. If CrossPad turns itself off, simply press the On/Off button once for Off and then back On again.

The Supplemental Handwriting Guide in this package introduces the Ink Manager Trainer software. This utility provides exercises you will use to improve the way Ink Manager recognizes your handwriting. Ink Manager Trainer is divided into a series of training sets. You can complete the training sets in groups or one at a time over a period of time, whichever is more convenient. If you intend to make frequent use of the recognition capability of the software, we strongly recommend that you complete the two Basic Training sets in the Supplemental Handwriting Guide.
