“First Sketch of Qabalistic Key to AL”

Column I

Statement 1: X 3.14593 ‫אלהים‬ = π to 6 places

Proof: Unknown. The use of the Solar/Lunar./Masc./Fem. glyph (hereafter called
the HG glyph or glyph of the “Hieros Gamos”) may be pointing to the fact that
ELOHIM is a masculine root with both a feminine and a plural ending or might
possibly be referring to the letter Kaph (20/500; as below). Elohim enumerates to 86
or 646 (with M Final)(1+30+5+10+40/600). Uncertain as to how this relates to Pi.
(Using Aiq Beker the values reduce to 1, 3, 5, 1 & 4. Then, using Temurah, one may arrive at
31145 with one of the 1’s [Yod] representing a point since it is often associated with the
spermatozoon. 3.145. The addition of 93 relates to the marriage of Sun and Moon through “love
under will” [Θεληµα & Αγαπη]. If this is the case, and I certainly hope it isn’t, then it is a
very flimsy one and not worthy of being included as proof of the praeterhuman origins of CCXX.)

Statement 2: ‫ = האד‬HAD = 11 = in full = 555 = 5 energy.

Proof: Partially incorrect. 5+1+4) ‫ )האד‬is 10 not 11 as stated. “In full” indicates
the three letters spelled out. HH (10), ALP (111), DLTh (434) = 555. “Energy”
might indicate Crowley’s usage of Aleph to represent the energy of the Pentagram as
in CCCXXXIII, Commentary on “Sabbath of the Goat” and hence 5 X 111= 555.

Statement 3: 31 = ‫אל‬
.31 = .‫לא‬
Proof: Correct. Aleph = 1; Lamed = 30.

Statement 4: X σ = (=6) = XX + XI = 31.

Proof: Partially unknown, partially correct. The HG glyph repeats again showing the
union between Sun and Moon, Masc. & Fem. The relation to Sigma is unclear and
Sigma’s relation to the number 6 even more so. The lower case Sigma physically
looks like a 6 and isopsephically reduces to 6 (from 600). Also the number 6 is
generally associated with the Hexagram, which, aside from its association with the
planets is also a glyph of Union between oppositional qualities (vide CCCXXXIII,
Ch. XXXVI, LXIX). Another possibility is that the Greek Sigma can be equivalent
‫ס‬
to the Hebrew which corresponds to the Art card itself a glyph of Union between
oppositional elements. Samekh also is the letter associated with the Navitah that
links the Sephiroth Tiphareth with Yesod.

The Roman numerals relate to the ATU, here being The Aeon (Shin – possibly )
and Lust (Union of Solar and Lunar, Masc. and Fem.)
Statement 5: 309 = ‫שט‬ = XX+XI.
Proof: Correct. Shin (300) + Teth (9) = 309. Shin relates to the Aeon card (XX) and
Teth to the Lust card (XI). Check further connection between 309 & 31.

‫נו‬
Statement 6: = NU = 56.
Proof: Correct. Nun (50) + Vav (6) = 56.

Statement 7: 161 COPH NIA 61 = ‫אין‬

+ 100 = .‫כף‬
Proof: Correct. Kaph (20) + Pe (80) = 100; Aleph (1) + Yod (10) + Nun (50) = 61.
Crowley’s addition is interesting here. In spelling the words he uses the Hebrew final
forms but in calculating the gematria he uses the initial value, a practice repeated
throughout his career as a magician. Also, of interest is the fact that he spelled Kaph
properly, from right to left, but NIA is spelled as AIN (the Kabbalistic concept of
“Nothing” [see Proof for Statement 8]).

Statement 8: ‫ = כף‬Kaph in full = ! + " in Greek. See I 46-47.

Proof: Correct. Kaph if directly transliterated into Greek gives us ΚΦ. Crowley
translated these two Greek letters throughout his life as being initials for Κτεισ and
Φαλλοσ and thus representative of the Sun (as Phallus) and Moon (as Kteis) in
union. Chapter I verses 46 & 47 of CCXX discuss the number 80 which is Kaph
spelled using initial Hebrew values:

AL I, 46: "Nothing is a secret key of this law. Sixty-one the

Jews call it; I call it eight, eighty, four hundred & eighteen."

The Old Comment

46. 61 = nva. But the True Nothing of Nuit is 8, 80, 418. Now 8
is c, which spelt fully is 418 - tic. And 418 is Abrahadabra, the
word of Ra-Hoor-Khuit. Now 80 is p, the letter of Ra-Hoor-
Khuit. (Qy. this?) (Could 80 = ∞0. Infinity x Zero?)

AL I, 47: "But they have the half: unite by thine art so that all
disappear."

The Old Comment

47. Let us, however, add the Jewish half, 61.

8 + 80 + 418 = 506. Cf. Verses 24, 25.

506 + 61 = 567 = 27 x 21 = ?
But writing 506 qabalistically backwards we get 605, and 605 + 61
= 666.

666 = 6 x 111, and 11 = a = 0 in Taro.

666 = 1 + 2 + ... 36, the sum of the numbers in the Magic Square
of Sol.

666 = the Number of the Beast.

Or, taking the keys, 8, 80, 418, we get VII, XVI, VII, adding to 30.

30 + 61 = 91 = nma, Amen.

This may unite Nuit with Amoun the negative and concealed. Yet
to my mind, she is the greater conception, that of which Amoun is
but a reflection.

Statement 9: AIWASS AIVAS = 78 (666’s error).

Proof: Correct. A (1) + I (10) + V (6) + A (1) + S (60) = 78. The basis of the error
was discovered later through the assistance of a Mr. Samuel Jacobs in 1917 as related
most recently in Oriflamme # 2: “The Revival of Magick and Other Essays”;
‫ = עיוז‬OIVZ = 93 & ΑΙFΑΣΣ = 418.
MTP, App. III, “Notes for an Astral Atlas”: “AIWAZ itself adds
to 93. (This numeration was discovered years later. The
question then arose out of consideration of this discovery
through S. Jacobs: "Why is Aiwaz spelt Aiwass, not Aiwaz, in
the Book of the Law?" In Greek [Αιφασ] Aifass = 418. The
author of the Book had concealed in His own name not one
only but two numbers, those of supreme importance in the
Book.)”

CCXX, I, 7, New Comment: “Why is Aiwass thus spelt, when

Aiwaz is the natural transliteration of OIVZ? Perhaps because he
was not content with identifying Himself with Thelema, Agape, etc.
by the number 93, but wished to express his nature by six letters
(Six being the number of the Sun, the God-Man, etc.) whose value
in Greek should be A=1, Ι=10, Φ=6, Α=1, Σ=200, Σ=200: total
418, the number of Abrahadabra, the Magical Formula of the new
Aeon! Note that I and V are the letters of the Father and the Son,
also of the Virgin and the Bull, (See ‘Liber 418’) protected on either
side by the letter of AIR, and followed by the letter of Fire twice
over.” [See statement and Proof 21 - MaL]

Statement 10: TA-NISH TANICh = 78 alternatively.

Proof: Incorrect. This can only be true if the “A” (Aleph) is replaced by an “H” (Hé)
and therefore be THNICh. ‫טהנוח‬
Statement 11: Sh for Ch gives 370. OSh creation.
Proof: Partially incorrect. Here Statement 11 gives further proof that Aleph would
not be included in TANICh. However, 370 = ‫ ש = עש‬+ ‫ = ע‬OSh, Hebrew word
for “creation”

Statement 12a: ΘΕΛΗΜΑ = 93; in full 2,542.

Proof: Correct. Theta (9) + Epsilon (5) + Lambda (30) + Eta (8) + Mu (40) + Alpha
(1) = 93; Θητα (318) + Εψιλον (865) + Λαµβδα (78) + Μυ (309) + Ητα (440) +
Αλφα (532) = 2,542.

Statement 12b: ΛΟΓΟς ΠΥΘΙΟς ΤΟΥ ΝΟΜΟΥ = 2,542 see I, 39.

Proof: Correct. The phrase translates loosely from the Greek as “Word of
Inspiration His Law” = 373 + 769 + 770 + 630= 2,542. The “I,39” referenced is
from AL I,39: “The word of the Law is Θεληµα.” From Crowley’s diary entry of
May 23, 1923 e.v.

Statement 14: ΑΓΑΠΗ = 93.

Proof: Correct. Alpha (1) + Gamma (3) + Alpha (1) + Pi (80) + Eta (8) = 93

Statement 15: M…..M = 93.

Proof: See MTP, Ch. VII, Part V

Statement 16: III° …. = 93.

Proof: See MTP, Ch. VII, Part V

Statement 17: 93 = ‫צבא‬ also Star. Host.

Proof: Partially correct. TzBA = 90 + 2 + 1 = 93; Tzava – (Heb.) Host or army.
Uncertain as to how the word “star” relates to “tzava” since there is no Hebrew
word for “star” that comes close to this.

Statement 18: Montu MVNTV = 111.

Proof: Correct. Mem (40) + Vav (6) + Nun (50) + Teth (9) + Vav (6) = 111

Statement 19: RPST = 311.

Proof: Incorrect. All possible variants in either Hebrew of Greek do not total 311.
Resh (200) + Peh (80) + Samekh (60) + Teth (9) = 349; Resh (200) + Peh (80) +
Shin (300) + Tav (400) = 980; Resh (200) + Peh (80) + Samekh (60) + Tav (400) =
740; Resh (200) + Peh (80) + Shin (300) + Teth (9) = 589; Rho (100) + Pi (80) +
Sigma (200) + Tau (300) = 680.

Statement 20: ‫ = חאבש‬KHABS · 311 · ΒΗΤΑ ·

Proof: Correct. Cheth (8) + Aleph (1) + Beth (2) + Shin (300) = 311; Beta (2) + Eta
(8) + Tau (300) + Alpha (1) = 311
Statement 21: ΑΙFΑςς = AIWASS = 418.
Proof: Correct. Alpha (1) + Iota (10) + Digamma (6) + Alpha (1) + Stigma (200) +
Stigma (200) = 418. This calculation is correct whereas AC’s calculation in his
commentary for AL I,6 is not since he uses Phi, which does not equal 6, instead of
the Diagamma as shown above.

Statement 22: RPSTOVAL · 418 = ‫בולשכין‬ .

Proof: Partially correct. RPSTOVAL does not equal 418 using Hebrew gematria.
Resh (200) + Peh (80) + Samekh (60) + Teth (9) + Ayin (70) + Vav (6) + Aleph (1)
+ Lamed (30) = 456. Again, Crowley is using RPST to equal 311 (because
311+107=418), which it does not. However, BVLShKIN (Boleskine) does
enumerate to the sum given. Beth (2) + Vav (6) + Lamed (30) + Shin (300) + Kaph
(20) + Yod (10) + Nun (50) = 418.

Statement 23: ABRAHADABRA = 418.

Proof: Correct. 5 Alephs (5) + 2 Beths (4) + 2 Reshs (400) + He (5) + Daleth (4) =
418

Statement 24: Ch · 8 = ChITh = 418 = ABRAHADABRA = RA-HVVR.

Proof: Correct. Cheth’s value in the Hebrew alphabet is 8. Spelled out fully ‫ חות‬it
enumerates to 418. This in turn is equivalent to the Word of the Aeon,
ABRAHADABRA, (see Statement and Proof 23). 418 is also the sum of the Hebrew
letters in the transliteration of the name of the Egyptian god, Ra-Hoor. Resh (200) +
Aleph (1) + He (5) + Vav (6) + Vav (6) + Resh (200) = 418.

Statement 25: ΠΑΛΛΑΣ ΑΘΗΝΗ = 418.

Proof: Correct. Pi (80) + Alpha (1) + Lambda (30) + Lambda (30) + Alpha (1) +
Sigma (200) + Alpha (1) + Theta (9) + Eta (8) + Nu (50) + Eta (8) = 418. Refers to
the virginal Greek goddess of Wisdom and Warfare; matron and protector of the city
of Athens. From Crowley’s diary entry from May 28, 1923 e.v.

Statement 26: TO MH = 418.

Proof: Correct. Tau (300) + Omicron (70) + Mu (40) + Eta (8) = 418. Refers to AL
I, 53, 62, 65. From the New Comment AL I, 53: “Our Lady of the Stars not only
calls me to Her, but bestows upon me as a name 'To me' – Το Μη - ‘The Not’, the
Attainment of that Aspiration expressed in my motto. And Το Μη adds to 418!”

Statement 27: PARZIVAL = 418.

Proof: Partially correct. If transliterated into English characters to represent the
Hebrew spelling it should read PARTzIVAL = Peh (80) + Aleph (1) + Resh (200) +
Tzaddi (90) + Yod (10) + Vav (6) + Aleph (1) + Lamed (30) = 418; as transliterated
in the Key it has a Z for Zayin instead of a Tz for Tzaddi. Legendary Grail Knight
whose treatment by Eschenbach has fueled mystical and alchemical speculation for
centuries. Parzival is included with his father as a Saint in the canon of the Ecclesia
Gnostica Catholica. Parzival was also the name taken by Charles Stansfield Jones as a
member of the OTO. C.S. Jones was considered to be the Magical Son of Crowley
who provided a key to some of the Mysteries of Liber AL and to whom Liber Aleph
was dedicated and written. In this way the father of PARZIVAL (418, Jones) is
KAMURET (666, Crowley). (See Col. II, Stmnt. 8. See also Jones’ “Chalice of
Ecstasy”.)

Statement 28a: 8 =) ‫ חות‬in full) = 418.

Proof: Correct. See Statement and Proof 24.

Statement 28b: St Belsayfa 418 = ‫בהטישאיפא‬ .

Proof: Correct. Beth (2) + He (5) + Teth (9) + Yod (10) + Shin (300) + Aleph (1) +
Yod (10) + Peh (80) + Aleph (1) = 418. Line drawn diagonally down a page of the
Holograph of AL.

Column II
Statement 1: HRV-RA-HA = 211 + 201 + 6 = 418.
Proof: See Proofs below.

Statement 2a: ‫הרו‬ = HERU = 211.

Proof: Correct. He (5) + Resh (200) + Vav (6) = 211.

Statement 2b: ‫רא‬ = RA = 201.

Proof: Correct. Resh (200) + Aleph (1) = 201.

Statement 2c: ‫הא‬ = HA = 26.

Proof: Incorrect. He (5) + Aleph (1) = 6 not 26. This is probably a transcription
error based off of confusing the sum of this line with that of the sum on line 3b
since the sum for HA is correct in Statement I of Column II.

Statement 3a1: ‫הוור‬ = HOOR = 217.

Proof: Correct. He (5) + Vav (6) + Vav (6) + Resh (200) = 217.

Statement 3a2: ‫רא‬ = RA = 201.

Proof: Correct. See Statement and Proof for Col. II, 2b. The sum of Col. II,
Statements 3a1 and 3a2 is 418.

Statement 3b: ‫כו‬= KHU = 26.

Proof: Correct. Kaph (20) + Vav (6) = 26. The sum of the entirety of Col. II,
Statement 3 is 444.
Statement 4: ΝΟΜΟς = 430.
Proof: Correct. Nu (50) + Omicron (70) + Mu (40) + Omicron (70) + Sigma (200)
= 430. The term is the Greek word meaning “Law”. See also Col. I, Statement 12b.

Statement 5: ΜΟΥ = 510 = ΦΙ = ‫ריש‬

Proof: Correct. Mu (40) + Omicron (70) + Upsilon (400) = 510. Mou is a Greek
first person personal pronoun meaning “me” or also the first person possessive
pronoun meaning “mine”. Phi (500) + Iota (10) = 510. The Greek letter Phi, besides
being the symbol chosen to represent the Golden Ratio (an important correlation to
be sure), has a numerical value of 500 which equates it to Kaph (fin.) in the Hebrew
Alphabet. Additionally the combination of Phi and Iota has been used in Crowley’s
writings to signify the Phallos (Φ) and the seed (I). The full spelling of the Hebrew
letter Resh also gives us 510 = Resh (200) + Yod (10) + Shin (300) thus equating the
Greek word “me” or “mine” with Solar-Phallicism and possibly inferring a
relationship with the same to the Golden Ratio and the HG Glyph (see Col. I,
Stmnt. 8). (Compare with the Liber XXV notes on “Σοι” and “Ω Φαλλε”.)

Statement 6: ‫תריון‬= THERION = 666.

Proof: Correct. Tau (400) + Resh (200) + Yod (10) + Vav (6) + Nun (50) = 666.
Hebrew transliteration and gematria calculation of the Greek word for “Beast”.

Statement 7: ΤΟ ΜΕΓΑ ΘΗΡΙΟΝ = 666.

Proof: Correct. Tau (300) + Omicron (70) + Mu (40) + Epsilon (5) + Gamma (3) +
Alpha (1) + Theta (9) + Eta (8) + Rho (100) + Iota (10) + Omicron (70) + Nu (50)
= 666. Greek Isopsephical calculation of the phrase “The Great Beast”.

Statement 8: KAMURET = 666 .

‫כמורת‬
Proof: Correct if spelled as follows: . Kaph (20) + Mem(40) + Vav (6) +
Resh (200) + Tav (400) = 666. Kamuret (or Gamuret) was the father of Parsifal who
had married both a Christian and a Pagan (Muslim) Bride and had sired two
extraordinary sons. (See W. von Eschenbach). He is also a Gnostic Saint in the EGC.

Statement 9: 666 the Number of the STELE

The number of the BEAST
The number of the MAN. see Apocalypse.
Proof: Correct. As shown in Equinox of the Gods, &c. the Cairo Museum Stele
which was pointed out by Rose Crowley in 1904 was numbered exhibit 666. As
shown in Col. II, Stmnt. 6, the Hebrew transliteration of the Greek word ΘΗΡΙΟΝ
or “Beast” equals 666. Finally, in Crowley’s Sepher Sephirah it shows Crowley’s and
Rabbi Gunn’s gematria calculations for AC’s name:
Aleister E. Crowley (ALHISTHR H KROVLHI) =
666= ‫כרעולהי ה אלהיסטהר‬.
Aleister Crowley (ALISTIR QRVLI) =666 = ‫אליסטיר קרולי‬ .
All of the above symbols may be found in the Book of Revelations attributed to
John of Patmos.

Statement 10: The BEAST AChIHA 666 in full. (The usual spelling is ChIVA) A=111,
Ch=418, I=20, H=6, A=111.
Proof: Unknown. ‫ חיוא‬or “beast” equals 25 on its own. Crowley’s word, ‫אחיהא‬,
also equals 25. 50 + 666 = 716. ‫ אחיהא‬spelled “in full” (with each letter spelled
out) is correct as given. ‫ חיוא‬spelled in full is 561. All together (560+666+666) the
sum is 1,892.

Statement 11: 0 = A in the Book of Thoth (The Tarot).

Proof: Correct. In the system of the Tarot used by the Golden Dawn 0 is given to
the Fool card and is attributed to the letter Aleph or A.

Statement 12: A = 111 ! = 6.

Proof: Correct. “A” is Aleph – A+L+P = 111. The Solar glyph is here related to the
number 6 because of a) its relation to the 6 pointed Hexagram and b) its
correspondence to the sixth Sephirah, Tiphareth. Hence 6 x 111 = 666, the full
expansion of the Sun through the Element of Air which leads to Naught.

Statement 13: ANKH-F-N-KHANShU-T = 666.

Proof: Incorrect as written. The enumeration is only correct if the name is
transliterated into Hebrew as follows:‫אנכפנכענשויט‬ or ANK-P-N-
KONShVIT. Aleph (1) + Nun (50) + Kaph (20) + Pe (80) + Nun (50) + Kaph (20)
+ Ayin (70) + Nun (50) + Shin (300) + Vav (6) + Yod (10) + Teth (9) = 666.

Statement 14: Nuteru NVThIRV = 666.

Proof: Incorrect as written.‫נותירו‬ . For the transliteration of the above to
properly add up to 666 one of the Vav’s must be removed. As it is it produces the
sum 672 as follows: Nun (50) + Vav (6) + Tav (400) + Yod (10) + Resh (200) + Vav
(6) = 672.

Statement 15: ΣΤΗΛΗ 666 = 52 + 666 = 718.

Proof: Incorrect. The isopsephy for “Stele” equals 540 and not 52. Sigma (200) +
Tau (300) + Eta (5) + Lambda (30) + Eta (5) = 540 + 666 = 1,206.

Statement 16a: Bes-na-Maut BISh Na MAVT. 888

Proof: Possibly correct. BISh Na MAVT or 418 = ‫בישנמאוט‬ . Beth (2) + Yod
(10) + Shin (300) + Nun (50) + Mem (40) + Aleph (1) + Vav (6) + Teth (9) = 418.
As a side note, one may spell Bes-Na-Maut to equal 888 as follows BISh N MAVITh
or 888 = ‫בישנמעוית‬ ; Beth (2) + Yod (10) + Shin (300) + Nun (50) + Mem (40)
+ Ayin (70) + Vav (6) + Yod (10) + Tav (400) = 888.

Statement 16b: Ta-Nich ThA NICh. Ch x A

Proof: Possibly correct. ‫תאניח‬ = Tav (400) + Aleph (1) + Nun (50) + Yod (10) +
Cheth (8) = 469. If the transcription of Crowley’s notes is to suggest that by adding
16a and 16b one arrives at 888, then one of the words is misspelled. If the
significantly valued 418 spelling of Bes-na-Maut is correct, then the Qabalistic
rendering of Ta-Nech is not. If Bes-na-Maut is meant to be 418 then Ta-Nech must
be 470 in order to produce the sum 888. However, if one takes that the small “a” in
BISH Na MAVT is supposed to be an Aleph (and that its reduction in size is a
typographical error) then you lose 418 for 419 which when added to 469 produces
the sum 888. Additionally, the right-hand formula should be written “Ch x ALP”
since Ch (8) x ALP (111) = 888. Otherwise it could be calculated as Ch(8) x A(1) =
8, or ChITh (418) x ALP (111) = 4,598.

Statement 17: ΛΟΓΟS ΠΥΘΙΟς = Word = 1142.

Proof: Correct. Lambda (30) + Omicron (70) + Gamma (3) + Omicron (70) +
Sigma (200) + Pi (80) + Upsilon (400) + Theta (9) + Iota (10) + Omicron (70) +
Sigma (200) = 1,142. “Inspired Word” or “Prophetic Word”, “Word of Prophecy”.
Crowley used this phrase to designate “The Word” (i.e., the Word of the Magus and
therefore of the Aeon) in his diary entry for May 23, 1923 e.v. Note misspelling of
Logos; transcriber used a Romanized “S” instead of the Greek Sigma or Stigma.

Statement 18: ΑΓΕ ΤΟ ΘΕΛΗΜΑ ςΟΥ = 1142.

Proof: Correct. Alpha (1) + Gamma (3) + Epsilon (5) + Tau (300) + Omicron (70)
+ Thelema (93) + Sigma (200) + Omicron (70) + Upsilon (400) = 1,1421. Crowley’s
translation of “Do what thou wilt” in Greek. From same source as Col. II, Stmnt. 17,
and Col. I, Statmnt. 12b.

This number’s factors are as follows and may be worthy of continued research: 1*1,142 & 2*571.
