Jay Gatsby
Chapter I:
1) You discover that he owns a mansion in West Egg that is the imitation of the Hotel de Ville in Normandy. 2) You dont know anything until the last paragraph where it says he is content to be alone. 3) You feel as though he is mysterious, you dont know whether or not you can trust him. 4) Pg. 20-21, he stretched out his arms toward the water in a curious way I could have sworn he was trembling when I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished. This was a significant passage in this chapter because its really the only time it talks about Jay Gatsby directly. 5) I think we will learn more about Jay Gatsby in the next chapter, about how he is.

Chapter II:
1) We learn that he is a nephew or cousin of Keiser Wilhem, and thats where all of his money comes from. Also, that he had a party about a month ago. 2) We dont know or talk about that 3) We feel that he is still mysterious 4) Pg. 32, I was down there at a party about a month ago. At a man named Gatsby Im scared of him. Id hate to have him get anything on me. I found this significant because it shows that people fear him. 5) I think we will learn more about Jay Gatsby in the next chapter, about how he is.

Chapter III: 1) We learn that Gatsby is popular for throwing parties every weekend at his house. People
think that he was a German spy, he is an Oxford graduate, and he once killed a man in cold blood. His parties are extremely over the top and crazy with feasts, an orchestra, a swimming pool and liquor. He served in the same division as Nick in the war. Gatsby calls everyone old sport and he keeps himself separate from the party, standing alone on the steps watching the guests. His emotional state is still unknown. He is still a little bit mysterious, but since we learned a lot about him in this chapter you feel as though you know him much better. Pg. 48, He is a very generous man, throwing parties for strangers in his mansion for free. He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced, or seemed to face, the whole external world for an instant and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself. I thought this was significant because it shows how he appears to other people and what Nicks first impression of him was. Hopefully we will learn even more about Jay Gatsby in the next chapter, about why he throws so many parties and if he is hiding anything that we are yet to know.

Chapter IV:
1) We read a rumor that he is a bootlegger. Gatsby tells us about himself; he is the son of wealthy people in the Midwest, he was educated at Oxford, he is from the mid west but says San Francisco. His family is all dead and he inherited a lot of money, he then lived like a young rajah traveling through Europe, he then fought in the war as a first lieutenant. We also find out that Gatsby wants to have Nick invite Daisy over for tea so he and her can finally see each other again. 2) He seems very fond of Nick, he is very friendly and cares what people think of him. 3) I feel like I finally really know Jay Gatsby and that he is a very nice guy. He does seem a little shady though because of his friendship with Mayer Wolfshiem. 4) Pg. 79, A phrase began to beat in my ears with a sort of heady excitement: There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired. I thought this was significant because it helps you see more of what it was like the live in the 1920s. People who are being pursued, people pursuing riches and an easier life, the busy people who work towards that life, and the tired people who are poor and have to endure hard work in pursuit of a better life. 5) In the next chapter I think that Gatsby and Daisy will meet and rekindle their love for one another. I also think that the relationship between Nick and Jordan will blossom.

Chapter V:
1) We dont really find a lot of new information on Gatsby in this chapter, but the chapter is mainly centered on him and Daisy. Gatsby is overjoyed that Nick agreed to invite Daisy over for tea so they can meet. He is very nervous and their first meeting is extremely awkward. He knocks Nicks clock over and says the meeting was a mistake. But when Nick returns he sees Daisy crying with joy and Gatsby glowing with happiness. We find out that Gatsby was staring at the green light at the end of her dock because he was dreaming about their future happiness. In the end of the chapter Nick leaves them alone in his house because they had forgotten him. 2) Gatsby is very emotional in this chapter and undergoes many emotion changes. He is at first very nervous, then very worried, then regretful, and then very happy. 3) I feel sorry for Gatsby at first because it doesnt look like his anticipated meeting with daisy is going well. But then I felt happy for him because it ended perfectly with them infatuated with each other. 4) Pg. 95, One thing's sure and nothing's surer, the rich get richer and the poor get children. This quote is from the song that Mr. Klipspringer played on piano for them. It is significant because it helps you see more of what it was like to live in the 1920s. The rich were living it up and staying rich; they didnt have many children, if any, because of the free spirited life they lived. While the poor had many children and big families, causing them to stay poor. 5) I think the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby will continue to grow and develop in the next chapter.

Chapter VI:
1) In this chapter we finally find out the real truth regarding Jay Gatsby. His real name is James Gatz, he was born in North Dakota on a farm. He went to college at St. Olafs in Minnesota but dropped out after two weeks. He then worked on Lake Superior fishing for salmon and digging for clams. One day a storm was coming over Lake Superior and he saw Dan Codys, a wealthy copper mogul, yacht and rowed out to warn him. He was grateful and like him so he took him on his yacht as his personal assistant and was his mentor. Gatz then changed his name to Jay Gatsby. He then fell in love with wealth and luxuries because of Mr. Cody, he also doesnt drink because of how he saw it affect Mr. Cody. When he died he left Gatsby $25,000 but he never got it because Codys mistress took all the money. 2) Gatsbys emotional state changes in this chapter as well, he is nervous because Tom has stopped by his house for a drink. He then is distraught because he sees that Daisy has had such a bad time at his party, and he wants things between them to go back to the way they were before he left Louisville. 3) In this chapter I feel as though I hadnt really known Jay Gatsby at all even though I thought I did, and now I truly know him and his past. I trust Jay Gatsby because now I fully know his character. 4) Pg. 98, The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of Goda phrase which, if it means anything, means just thatand he must be about His Fathers business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty. So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end. This quote is significant because it describes Gatsbys history and how he transformed himself into this ideal person that he wanted to be. 5) I feel like in the next chapter something big will happen between Gatsby and Daisy, now that Tom is speculating something going on.

Chapter VII:
1) In this chapter Gatsby cancels all his parties and hires all new shady servants because Daisy is spending a lot of time at his house, and he doesnt want gossip to spread. We find out that he and Daisy are in love again. They are all at the Buchanans one afternoon and Daisy and Jay cant hide their love for one another. Daisy asked Gatsby if he wanted to go into the city because she was bored, then stares at her passionately. Then Tom becomes certain of their feelings for each other. When they all go to the hotel Tom finally confronts Gatsby, he asks him about his intentions for Daisy and he replies that Daisy loves him and not Tom. He tries to get Daisy to say she never loved Tom but she cant, although she does admit that she loves Gatsby. Tom then reveals Gatsbys bootlegging operation. 2) Gatsbys emotional state is love at first with Daisy. It then turns into anger at Tom while they argue. Finally it turns to worry and concern as he watches Daisy outside of the Buchanans house. 3) I feel good for Gatsby because his love for Daisy finally came out and it seems that they might actually be able to be together, since they told Tom. 4) Pg. 124, It occurred to me that there was no difference between men, in intelligence or race, so profound as the difference between the sick and the well. Wilson was so sick that he looked guilty. I thought that this quote was significant because there was a big difference between men because of class and money. Although, at that moment they were in the same position because they were both betrayed by their wives who were in love with another man. 5) I cant imagine that Tom will just let Daisy go and forget about her and Gatsby. So in the next chapter I think that something will happen between them.

Chapter VIII:
1) In this chapter we learn that Daisy was the first girl he ever felt close to and that he lied about his background to make her believe that he was worthy of her. He then reveals that they made love to each other and that he felt like they were married because of that. And she promised to wait for him to return from the war, but she married Tom instead because of his social position, money, and her parents. Finally, in this chapter Gatsby dies. He is murdered by Wilson while lounging in his pool, because Wilson believes that Gatsby is his wifes murderer and lover. He then shoots himself afterward. 2) The book doesnt talk about his emotional state really in this chapter, but we can imagine that he has the previous days events heavily on his mind. 3) I feel horrible for Gatsby, because he died for something he didnt do. And now he will never be with Daisy. Tom is the one who should have died, if anyone. 4) Pg. 161, He must have felt that he had lost the old warm world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream. He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thing a rose is and how raw the sunlight was upon the scarcely created grass. A new world, material without being real, where poor ghosts, breathing dreams like air, drifted fortuitously about...like that ashen, fantastic figure gliding toward him through the amorphous trees. I thought that this was a significant quote because it eludes to Gatsbys final thoughts and feelings. That he had lost Daisy and his dream. 5) I think that news of Gatsbys death will spread in the next chapter and that Daisy will find out and do something. Im not sure what, but something irrational.

Chapter IX:
1) We dont learn much new information on Gatsby seeing that he is dead. Although, we do learn one thing from his father Mr. Gatz. He said that Gatsby had a big future planned for himself, and that he was very smart. 2) He doesnt have an emotional state because he is dead. 3) I dont feel anything new about the character or trust him, because he is dead. 4) There are no quotes important to the character or the direction of the novel, because he is dead and cant go anywhere further in the novel. 5) Nothing will happen to my character in the next chapter, because there is no next chapter.
