CHYK
Chinmaya Yuva Kendra (CHYK) is the youth wing of Chinmaya Mission. It is the meeting place for all young minds with an urge to surge ahead. It creates an atmosphere of dynamism and youthful energy. Focus is on specific issues related to youth and their concerns. Issues related to the individual, the nation and the world are discussed with the principle that individual perfection leads to perfection at all higher levels. Regular classes, workshops, elocution competitions, camps, conferences and lectures are conducted for the youth. There is a scheme of study related to the Geeta and other Vedantic texts which is followed in the classes. These classes are structured as discussion groups. The Chyksters also take up socially useful activities for the Mission as well as the community at large. Talents for music, dance, drama and art is encouraged, allowing a forum for self-expression and self-development in every field. The objective of this group is to help youngsters grow up with a strong understanding of Indian spiritual values and culture. It encourages youth to be responsible, creative, efficient and dynamic.

Our Motto: Harnessing youth potential through dynamic spirituality.

Our Inspiration

More important than what is behind you and what is ahead of you is what is WITHIN you.
Pujya Swami Chinmayanandas life was dedicated to showing all those who came near him, the riches of the inner life, helping young and old across the globe to discover the wise, joyous, love-filled centre of their own being. In his 42 years of teaching, he grew to become a spiritual master whom many revered, a human being whom yet many adored, and a humanitarian who left countless hearts and lives deeply touched. Although he passed from the earthly plane in 1993, his work continues unabated through Chinmaya Mission centres around the globe: in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Kenya, Singapore, South Africa, Bahrain, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, England, France, the United States and Canada. And more centres continue to form. Swami Chinmayananda was born Balakrishnan Menon on May 8, 1916, as the eldest son of a prominent judge, Kuttan Menon, and nephew of the Maharaja of Cochin. He graduated from Madras University in Science and Political Science and went on to get Post Graduate degrees in Literature and Law from Lucknow University. Menon was brilliant, handsome and engagingly witty. He took up journalism as a career.

6 A highly skeptical journalist and political activist, Swamiji went to the Himalayas in 1943 to write an expose on the spiritual traditions he thought had become irrelevant in the modern world. Instead, he became a monk and disciple of the great saint, Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, focusing his abundant energy and intelligence on spiritual life. Following a further nine years of intense spiritual practices and study of the Upanishads under one of the greatest Vedantic masters of the time, Swami Tapovanam of Uttarkashi,Swamiji himself became a master of the teachings. Inspired by the teachings of Vedanta and impelled by selfless love for humanity, Swami Chinmayananda left the lofty heights of the Himalayas in May 1951, and like Mother Ganga, came down to the plains to water the arid and fallow fields of modern mans meaningless and insatiable pursuits. Soon, thereafter, devotees formed the Chinmaya Mission, the nucleus of a mighty movement of Spiritual Renaissance. Pujya Gurudev chose for himself the tough task of educating the people in the ancient heritage of India through Gyana Yagnas a series of discourses on the Bhagavad Geeta, Upanishads and other Vedantic texts. A powerful orator, he induced his listeners to think for themselves, thus helping them along the path of spiritual unfoldment. He was particularly motivated to remould our youth. If the future is to be brighter, he said, we have to mould our youth not to think in our present disastrous pattern, but in a pattern with new inspiration and with new vision in their minds. This formed the genesis of the Chinmaya Yuva Kendra.

One must write clearly. Having written, one must look for mistakes and correct them. Thereafter, one must read it, without any mistakes.

All the maatras should be perfect and the method of writing uniform. The stories must be illustrated and filled with many colors.

He cannot be a leader who cannot tell what is to be known, who cannot tell what must be told, who has no proper understanding.

A leader must be endowed with qualities such as reflection upon selfknowledge, right amount of politics, the ability to interact with people. Who should be asked what? Who should be told what? How should a text be interpreted? How to please everyone? He knows this. He can visualize the future. Because of his alertness everywhere, his thoughts are powerful. Because of repeated study, his ideas are absolutely clear.

13 He who knows all this, is a truly wise leader. Nothing else matters.

The leader is fully aware of time, arrangements, protocol, poetry, important sayings, stage courage.

He loves solitude. He commits to memory the shastras, he dives deep to arrive at the right meaning.

The leader first himself learns, then teaches others. He attains high stature (because of this). Using his clear discrimination, he is able to help others out of their difficulties.

His writing is beautiful, so is his reading. Beautiful also are his walk and talk. His bhakti gyana and vairagya too, are beautiful, which he demonstrates (in his life).

He loves to put forth effort, by which his greatness becomes evident. He faces all challenges with courage and does not run away.

14 He knows how to act in times of trouble, he knows how to empathise with and handle situations; yet he remains uninvolved.

The leader is like the atman. The atman is present everywhere. Yet if you go to find him, you cant locate him. He disappears.

Nothing exists without the atman. You cannot see him but he enlivens every existing being. So too, the leader motivates all those around him in society.

In a similar way, he imparts wisdom to many people around him. He gives them the gross knowledge of the world as well as the subtle wisdom of the spirit. And then, those he has taught and who have learnt from him, they are ever grateful to him. This is the result of effective leadership.

The true leader protects law and justice. He does not transgress these, nor does he allow others to do so. He finds suitable solutions to problems.

Chinmaya Yuva Kendra, Belgaum.

15 Such a person is the support of many. Shri Ramdas Swami says, all the qualities of leadership exist in Shri Rama. These we should emulate.
