MELISSA DIPENTO/The Voorhees Sun
Ray Wiese of Voorhees, No. 41321, eases his stride as he checks his phone during last weeks 10-
mile Broad Street Run in Philadelphia. More than 34,000 people hit the street that day during
the annual run.
Broad Street Run
Area attorney
publishes book
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
Its not quite clear when Harp-
er Dimmerman has time to sleep.
Dimmerman is an attorney li-
censed in Pennsylvania and New
Jersey, a published legal colum-
nist and an adjunct real-estate
law professor at Temple Universi-
ty.
And if that wasnt enough,
Dimmerman just published his
first book, Justice
Hunter.
Dimmer-
man, born in
Philadelphia
and raised in
the Voorhees Al-
luvium neigh-
borhood, attend-
ed the E.T. Hamil-
ton and Kresson
schools. He has
since crossed back
to the other side of
the river, but contin-
ues to stay connect-
ed to Voorhees
through family and
friends.
Justice Hunter is loosely
based on Dimmermans own ex-
periences as counsel to the City of
Philadelphia in the controversial
case involving the late Joey
Ventos sign, This is America:
When ordering, please speak Eng-
lish, which hung prominently in
his South Philadelphia staple,
Genos Steaks.
The book chronicles the life of
Hunter Gray, a big-firm lawyer
hoping to make partner at the
firm he works
at. Along the
way, he is com-
missioned to
take down
Vito Armani,
a well-liked
and respected
South
Philadelphia
restaurateur.
I was in-
spired by the Constitution-
al issues. Hunter Gray is
involved in speech and
First Amendment stuff,
throwing him into a tail-
spin with people after
him, Dimmerman
said.
The story is com-
pletely based in
Philadelphia, but the
main character is a
Chicago transplant
who is trying to
make a name for
himself in the City
of Brotherly Love.
Dimmerman describes Grays
character as interesting, well
liked and cerebral.
Gray wanted to be a pro soccer
player, Dimmerman said, but
when that fell through, he redi-
rects himself to a career in law.
Along the way, he dates a com-
mon pleas justice.
The book has it all, Dimmer-
man says intrigue, sex, violence
and the law.
It gives you a stronger sense of
the world were in, Dimmerman

Group encourages biking to work

Its Bike to Work Week and
Cross County Connection, a
Marlton-based group that part-
ners with planning organiza-
tions, local and county govern-
ments, the NJDOT and NJ-
TRANSIT is encouraging peo-
ple to do just that.
Voorhees Township has
worked with members of Cross
County Connection on interac-
tive bicycle maps.
Cross County Connection en-
gineer Rick Riccardi has also
worked with the Voorhees Town-
ship Bicycle and Pedestrian
Pathway Committee to get safer
routes throughout the township,
said Joe Hale, the townships
code enforcement officer.
Hale, Riccardi and Dick Knopf
have worked on maps and bicy-
cle infrastructure, as well as
looking for grant opportunities
to bring more bike lanes to the
community.
Hale said the township was
about to submit a grant for con-
sideration through the Delaware
Valley Regional Planning Com-
mission to fund a bike path from
Eastern Regional High School
through Gibbsboro, connecting
Old Egg Harbor Road to Victor
Boulevard.
Currently, there are 10.5 miles
of existing bike paths in
Voorhees, including Centennial
Boulevard from Old Egg Harbor
Road to Evesham Road; Kresson
Road from Evesham Road to
Route 73; Victor Boulevard from
Cooper Road to Haddonfield-

The Paper Mill Playhouse Ris-
ing Star Awards were created to
encourage and reward exception-
al accomplishments in the pro-
duction of high school musical
theater. The Rising Star Awards
are a statewide competition of
New Jersey high school musicals
modeled after Broadways Tony
Awards, and with Paper Mill's as-
sistance, the program has been
replicated nationwide.
This year, 100 high school musi-
cals were evaluated statewide.
The Rising Star Award Corps of
Evaluators (comprised of theater
professionals, performing artists,
designers, and theater arts educa-
tors), fanned out across New Jer-
sey between January and April to
review shows at the entered
schools. In June, the Rising Star
Awards Gala Ceremony is pre-
sented on the Paper Mill stage
where nominees perform and se-
lected recipients are presented
with an engraved crystal award
from Tiffany and Company. The
17th annual Rising Star Awards
Gala Ceremony will take place on
June 5.
Because Eastern was nominat-
ed in the Outstanding Overall
Production category, students
will be invited to perform a selec-
tion from The King and I at the
gala. As a lead actress nominee,
Sarah Cheatham will be invited
to perform.
Cheatham and Chris Cortes
will be offered full scholarships to
attend Paper Mills Summer Mu-
sical Theatre Conservatory at
Kean University.

in our opinion
D
espite all of the political hy-
perbole were going to have to
put up with until Election Day,
theres at least one positive aspect to a
presidential campaign: Neither party
wants to offend voters. Theyll wait to
do that after the votes are counted.
Thats good news if you are trying
to pay back your federally funded stu-
dent loans. Come July, the interest rate
on those loans is set to double.
But thats not going to happen. In-
deed, the Democrats and Republicans
are arguing about how best to pay for
keeping the interest rate at 3.4 percent.
The Democrats say they want to close
a tax loophole. The Republicans want
to go after the presidents health-care
plan. Theres even speculation that the
rate will be extended with no idea of
how to pay for it.
But, and you can bet on it, the rate
isnt going to rise.
Thats because there are a lot of peo-
ple with these loans. A lot of people
who likely will be voting this Novem-
ber. And neither party wants to anger
them. Letting the rate rise and bank-
ing on political spin to blame the
other guy is too risky. After all, isnt
getting elected the most important
thing a politician can do?
Were all for promoting higher edu-
cation and wouldnt mind seeing the
rate stay where it is. What we dont
like is the talk about just doing it and
worrying about paying for it later.
Reuters estimates keeping the rate
steady would cost about $6 billion.
One reason the public is so disen-
chanted with the government is that
the government doesnt have to play
by the same rules. Regular folks, or at
least responsible regular folks, live on
a budget. They spend what they can af-
ford. If they want to buy something,
they find a way to pay for it.
But, this being an election year and
all, the politicians no doubt will go all-
out to make as many people happy as
possible. Unfortunately, in the case of
student loans, that might mean simply
ignoring a bill that is due.
Friendly politicians
One good thing about election years: Politicians want to be your friend
Student loans
Those with federally funded student
loans shouldnt worry too much about
a possible interest rate hike in July.
Its an election year. The politicians
will do all they can to keep you happy.

Locals meet with legislators
about Alzheimers Disease
On Wednesday, April 25, 24 advocates
from South Jersey joined others from all
fifty states affected by the scourge of
Alzheimers Disease in Washington, D.C.
For the 24 from South Jersey, we met per-
sonally with Sen. Bob Menendez and Reps.
Rob Andrews, Frank LoBiondo and Jon
Runyan, as we all squeezed into each of
their offices for a half-hour session.
Although this was the 11th year our
Delaware Valley Chapter has made this
trip, it was my first time as we expressed
our appreciation to each of the legislators
for their co-sponsorship of the proposed
HOPE for Alzheimers Act, which will pro-
vide access to much needed critical care
and services for people living with
Alzheimer's and their families. At our
visit we also requested their vital support
of the National Alzheimers Plan, includ-
ing the $100 million in President Obamas
2013 budget for research, education, out-
reach and caregiver support activities.
And while all four of our congressional
members have experienced AD in their
families and know the devastation it has
caused, several advocates shared their own
stories to each member of Congress.
While each of these testimonies was emo-
tional, I found those of the two members
with us, John and Rich, who have personal-
ly been diagnosed with younger-onset AD,
one in 2008 and the other nine months
ago, to be both courageous and overwhelm-
ing.
But, we need your help. You know how
devastating it is to the individual, the fami-
lys finances and the caregivers own
health. So I would ask each person who
knows firsthand about this devastation to
join us by becoming an advocate for more
legislation and research funding that will
help us achieve our vision to live in a world
without Alzheimers.
And you can get involved just a little to
start, by sending an email or calling our
state and federal legislators to encourage
their supporting and voting for specific leg-
islation. As I found out this year, it takes
very little time and is easy the
Alzheimers Association will alert you
when action is needed and even creates the
email for you.
All you need to do to get started is go to
www.alz.org/desjsepa and on the menu on
the left side of the home page, scroll down,
click Advocate and then sign up, or call
the24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900.
And after doing a few emails and/or
phone calls, if you want to go to Washing-
ton, D.C., and meet with our legislators
next year. Were doing it again on April 24,
2013. It is a very inspiring and motivating
day for a great cause.

South Jersey Advocacy Committee
Alzheimers Association

It has now been a year since the
new Virtua Medical Campus
opened on Route 73 in Voorhees.
The $481 million complex sits on
a 120-acre site and has been an
economic infusion for our com-
munity. The project has brought
1,000 additional jobs to Voorhees
and generates hundreds of thou-
sands dollars in tax revenue for
both our municipality and our
schools. The hospital is attracting
related businesses such as med-
ical offices, restaurants and ho-
tels. The project has also included
a major upgrade to our sewer in-
frastructure.
What will happen to the former
Virtua facility on Evesham Road?
This is a question often posed to
me and other members of the
Township Committee. Virtua has
no immediate plans for the future
use of the site. However, Virtua
has determined that it is more
cost effective to raze the old build-

their current condition. Virtua

For Dimmerman, it isnt com-
pletely out of the blue he penned
a work of fiction.
After all, he did graduate from
Vassar College with an
English/creative writing degree.
He said he was in denial about life
post-graduation, and decided to
go to law school.
After law school, Dimmerman
said he almost became a literary
agent. He was writing plays with
his brother when he started ex-
perimenting with novels.
It was the best thing Ive ever
done, Dimmerman said.
One piece of advice hes re-
ceived along the way keeps him
motivated to write, teach and
practice law, all at once.
I was told, when you love
something, its what you should
be doing, Dimmerman said.
With another novel on the way
in the Hunter Gray series, and
two more in the pipeline, Dim-
merman confidently revels in
having developed his voice.
Im writing as it comes and de-
veloping ways of saying things
that are me, Dimmerman said.
Its not a quagmire it makes
sense.
His book was released on the
Amazon Kindle and will soon be
available in paperback. Dimmer-
man said hes pleased with the re-
views hes received so far.
Its cool to have people on your
team, he said. And one review
made my year. I dont think I even
asked her to read it.
Dimmerman said hes happy
the book has been received well.
But he also has something no crit-
ic or supporter could ever say
about his book.
When I go back and read it, I
like it, Dimmerman said. Im
leaving something when Im
done. I feel Ive done something.

The Voorhees Township Bicy-
cle and Pedestrian Pathway Com-
mittee met many times when the
Virtua campus was looming
large, Hale said. And Virtua has
installed bike lanes connecting
Route 73 to Dutchtown Road and
Lions Lake Park.
Mayor Michael Mignogna said
the growth of bike lanes in the
community is encouraging.
More and more people are bik-
ing. Buses now have bike racks
on the front and trains allow rid-
ers to bring bikes on board. The
Voorhees Township Police De-
partment has a bike patrol that
tours the municipality when
weather permits, Mignogna
said. Many thanks to this com-
mittee for helping make Voorhees
a bicycle-friendly community.
Hale, too, said Voorhees, as
well as surrounding communi-
ties, are taking even more of an
initiative to connect municipali-
ties through bike lanes.
At the county level, Camden
County officials announced last
week that they are looking for vol-
unteers to staff a new county bike
share program.
The county is collecting and re-
furbishing bikes that will be
made available for county resi-
dents to borrow for a small mem-
bership fee. The program, offi-
cials said, is modeled after other
metropolitan bike shares
throughout the country, as well as
the current bike share in
Collingswood.
The county is looking for vol-
unteers with bicycle repair expe-
rience, or those willing to be
trained. Bicycle mechanics and
county distribution points are
also being sought out.
If you are interested in volun-
teering with the bike share or
have a bicycle to donate, contact
the Camden County Division of
Environmental Affairs at 858-5241
or email ccbikeshare@camden-
county.com.
Anyone interested in getting
involved with the townships Bi-
cycle and Pedestrian Pathway
Committee may call the township

While most college students
have traded rigorous academic
work for relaxing on the beach,
local residents will give up sum-
mer vacation to remain on cam-
pus at St. Josephs University as
a member of the Summer Schol-
ars Program.
The following students will en-
gage in faculty-mentored re-
search and creative projects at the
University this summer.
Voorhees resident Alexander
John DeBernardo, a biology
major, will work with Peter Clark,
S.J., on their topic, Developing a
Slow-moving Sand Water Filter
for Water.
Voorhees resident Jennifer
Wilson, a elementary and special
education major, will work with
Cathleen Spinelli, on their topic,
Communication and Collabora-
tion with Families of Students
with Disabilities.
The program, which runs for
11 weeks from May until August,
requires students to work exclu-
sively with a faculty member to
produce a written description of
their research that will be pub-
lished by the University, and to
present their findings next spring
during the Celebration of Stu-
dent Achievement event. For
their work, students receive a
stipend of $3,200, on-campus
housing, and the opportunity to
participate in social and educa-
tional programs.
Research topics range from
local and national issues in the
sciences, business, education and
history to extended analysis of
literature and fine arts.

Eastern students in all-state chorus
The New Jersey Music Educa-
tors Association (NJMEA) held
auditions at West Deptford High
School for the 2012 New Jersey
All-State Chorus.
Eastern High Schools placed
five singers in this year's chorus.
More than 1,000 New Jersey high
school students auditioned. Five
Eastern students were accepted
in the Chorus: Rachel Horner,
Maddison Kaigh, Megan Kalber-
er, Joseph Kuperschmidt and
Arjun Shankar. These singers
will perform at the NJMEA teach-
ers convention in Atlantic City in
November and at the New Jersey
Performing Arts Center in
Newark.
A subsequent honor was given
to three of Eastern's All-State
Chorus members. Because of
their high scores in the auditions,
they were chosen for membership
in the National Association for
Music Education (NAFME) All-
Eastern High School Mixed Cho-
rus. Rachel Horner, Maddison
Kaigh and Megan Kalberer are
applying for membership in this
prestigious chorus made up of
singers from the Northeastern
United States. They will perform
at the NAFME convention in
Hartford in April 2013.
