Executive Summary
Description of the client organisation and its activity
I have chosen to do this topic as I have a major interest in Badminton, with the London 2012 Olympics just around the corner there is a growing interest in many sports in particular to those involved in the Olympic Games. More than 1.1 billion people watched badmintons Olympic debut on TV in 1992 [Badminton Australia (2012)] with each year there are an increasing numbers of viewers. The client for this project will be I and anyone with an interest in Badminton, I will also be focusing on is to give people an insight of the culture and heritage behind Badminton, contemporary Badminton originated in England and yet has yet to become a major sport within the UK instead many Asian nations for example South Korea, Malaysia, China and Indonesia where intense training programs for badminton start as young as four. This project will help educate people about the history of Badminton and showcase through an exhibition of videos and images the different types of play styles implemented within amateur and semi-professional tournaments as this is particularly hard to find online and offline.

Brief Synopsis of the project undertaken

Project Badminton will be based upon a content management system which allows the admin and users (with permission) to publish, edit and modify the content of a website or blog from a central page. This project will serve several functions: To educate people about the history of Badminton and the evolution of Badminton To allow users to upload their own videos of games and tournaments To allow users to upload their own pictures To allow users to share advice and guidance on Badminton To allow users to learn different play styles implemented in different cultures

As this project is hugely based upon the community and the success of the project will depend on the participation of users to submit material it is my responsibility to ensure that the user generated content adheres to copyright issues and is also relevant to the website. As the users may not be exactly sure of what would be relevant material to upload I will make the website content rich by uploading videos and pictures which will the general direction of where I want the website to go. Another method to encourage users to participate within the website is to post exclusive material which only a limited number of people can access. I have contacted my Badminton coach who has links within Badminton England and the World Badminton Federation where she has given me exclusive badminton footage of matches which date back from 1982 this will help to increase traffic and gain reputation.

Theoretical and Intellectual Issues

Most of the content will be images and videos produced by myself at first only after I have gained a strong community then would I expect the material to be uploaded from the community. Any material which I upload I will have full permission and consent to use all material on the website. Any embedded videos will be taken from YouTube which is from a public domain and will have no copyright issues. I will be referencing all images, videos and any other material to adhere to any copyright issues. Any information based on the history, rules and regulations of badminton will be checked by my college who has a level 1 award in coaching badminton and as we both have extensive knowledge of the sport the information given should be accurate. Any content uploaded from users will require that all submissions be the users property and a check box will be required so that users confirm this.

Analysis
Within the online community there are not enough websites which provide a platform for users collaborate and create a user generated website revolving around badminton to help educate people the history of badminton, to share their own experiences and to discuss about the cultural differences implemented within the play styles of badminton. There are also two types of badminton videos which are difficult to find, the first is amateur and semi-professional badminton matches this is useful for teaching techniques and skills at a lower level as opposed to watching professionals train where advance movements are autonomous to them but to a lower skilled player they will need guidance. The second is vintage videos where any badminton matches before the year 2000 are difficult to find, what I will provide is a gallery of vintage badminton videos which are uploaded myself and by the community. From my previous projects I have found that using the MoSCoW analysis helps to organise prioritise and improve overall quality of projects which I why I will implement it in Project Badminton. Must have: Members log in Forums/Discussion Page Badminton History Picture and Video Gallery Allow users to upload pictures and videos

Should have: Allow users to create groups Search function Linked to other social media

Could have: Timeline to show evolution of rackets Shoutbox to allows users to communicate with admin and each other

Wont have: Misplaced videos Irrelevant material

What the project will give opportunities to a platform for users to give help and guidance to fellow players regarding skills and techniques, correct equipment and local clubs. I will be creating sub sections of the forums to help distinguish each where key aspects of badminton, any additional sections can be added by the users but will have to be given permission before continuing.

Technical Walkthrough
Within the front page there are links which direct users to external websites, the Facebook, Twitter and YouTube links will direct users to the World Badminton Federation, Badminton England and my own YouTube account this will allow users to see the most recent news and announcements. Throughout the website there is a shoutbox which enables users to communicate with myself or other users. The front page also has links to navigate through the website which is detailed below. The Group Page, users may create their own groups and join other users groups what this allows is if people want to categorise themselves in order to make a distinguished section.

The Forums Page, where users can discuss on anything badminton related, whether it be on a social, cultural or professional aspect. There are no set limits to what the users can discuss as long as it does not involve any offensive content.

The Gallery Page, where users can upload videos and pictures. The videos are formatted to be 200 by 140 pixels so that once the gallery grows larger users can still see a large selection of videos within one page.

Once a picture in the gallery has been clicked on it will enlarge and look like this

Tools used in creation of website:

WordPress: WordPress is a free and open source blogging platform which enables users to several key functionalities; Themes which may be installed to change the look and functionality of the blog. Plugins allow users to extend on the capabilities of the blog. Widgets allow developers to add functionality beyond the normal scope. WAMP: WAMP provides a web development platform on Window through using Apache2, PHP and MySQL database we are able to create web applications. WAMP provides a user friendly environment which makes it simple to use for those with limited knowledge on server administration.

Plug-ins used
All in one video pack Is a video embed tool, it gives the ability to upload, record and import videos directly to my posts. It also enables video responses and the ability to edit videos online. [WordPress All in One Video Pack (2012)] BuddyPress Allows you to build a social network within WordPress, users can register and create a profile and by doing so users can interact with each other through group discussions, private messaging, activity streams and many more. [WordPress BuddyPress (2012)] Kk YouTube Video is yet another video embed tool, but specifically embeds YouTube videos on the post or page, this plug-in allows the admin to search for videos on the plug-in without having to leave the Dashboard. It also allows you to customise the size of the video which was how I resized all of my videos on the Gallery page. [WordPress KK YouTube Video (2012)] Nextgen Gallery is an image gallery plugin used to upload pictures within a post or page, there is also a slideshow option which was the primary reason for choosing this plug-in. [WordPress NextGen Gallery (2012)] Bbpress is a forum software plug-in, this creates a simple forum with basic functionality. As I did not need any additional functionality for the forums I decided it would be best to keep it as small and light as possible. [WordPress bbPress (2012)] Akismet is an anti-spam plug-in where the comments are checked against Akismet web service and decides whether or not it is spam, it then allows the admin to review the spam and deal with it as necessary. [WordPress Akismet (2012)]

Theoretical/ intellectual issues

User Participation The most important issue for Project Badminton is to gain user participation the website is designed to have users participate as the gallery of videos and pictures would be solely from me and my college. As we only have a limited amount of personal videos which may be interesting or hard to 8

attain this would have affected the overall success of the project. Also in terms of cultural background we would need a larger community to cover a broader spectrum as play styles differ from country to country. Copyright issues Another concern was copyright issues that needed to be considered. This was addressed by having a copyright disclaimer on the home page stating that This website is for non-commercial and nonprofit purposes. If any uploaded material is wished to be removed contact admin@ProjectBadminton.com. Also for the video contents as a temporary measure I have only allowed YouTube videos to be uploaded as YouTube and as YouTube videos will be embed on my website i am no infringing on any copyright laws on my part, any infringing videos posted will most likely be removed by YouTube this saves me the effort of verifying each video. Spam As with every website which allows user participation there is a risk of spam, what I have used to tackle this is the plug-in Akismet where all comments from users are checked against Akismet web service if the comment is identified as spam then Akismet will notify the admin where the admin can then review and take the necessary actions to prevent/eliminate spam. Inaccurate material As most of the material should be generated from the users, it may not always be clear to the users what is relevant to upload or post. How I have tried to prevent this is to fill my website with the intended material and posts as a guide to show users what should be included in each section, although this may not be a permanent solution as if the website were to grow much larger I would need the assistance of moderators to help keep the website organised and well structured.

Project Review
Referring back to my MoSCoW analysis I have fulfilled all of my Must and Should have criterias. I was not able to implement a timeline to show the evolution of rackets, and I was not able to eliminate the problem of irrelevant material. With a small community and a low participation rate I could potentially eliminate all irrelevant material and misplaced videos, but as the community grows and the participation rate increase this will become an increasingly difficult job. One solution to this would be to use moderators from the community to help me tackle this problem although moderators for a newly established website are uncommon unless they are friends or family. I believe the overall project to be a success I was able to complete my aims and objectives although I was not able to implement a timeline plug-in. I addressed most of the theoretical and intellectual issues although to achieve this I did put a limit on the website by only allowing YouTube videos to be embedded on the posts. For further developments I would like to implement the timeline and include a large list of rackets with specifications so that I could put it in a gallery so users can see the progression of technology 9

implemented within the equipment for Badminton. I would also like the website to be interlinked with other badminton blogs and websites in the future what this will do is generate more traffic and hopefully grow the community, with a larger community the website would have more content and a broader spectrum. A final future improvement would be to allow users to rate and comment on each picture and video, by doing so users could sort the gallery by rating and this would give a higher quality service.
