Spotting

Garment and other articles stained with substances that are insoluble in dry cleaning solvent (blood , ink, rust spots, etc) are removed by dry cleaner in a procedure called spotting. A wide assortment of chemicals and procedures are available for this type of stain removal. A dry cleaning spotter must know the interactions of these chemicals with the various fibers and dyes as well as the nature of the stain. Improper spotting can permanently damage a fabric. Customers who identify stains for the dry cleaning task easier and ultimately improve their satisfaction with the cleaned product.

Stain removal guide for washable fabrics


Adhesive tape- Rub with ice ; scrape with dull knife ; sponge with cleaning fluid ; wash Ballpoint ink- Soak with hairspray ; rinse ; hand scrub with liquid detergent ; rinse well. Can try rubbing alcohol, glycerin, or prewash spray. Blood- Soak in cool water with enzyme presoak ; rub with detergent ; rinse. Can try hydrogen peroxide or ammonia solution; wash. Candle wax , paraffin - freeze and scrap ; place between paper towels or tissues and press with warm iron ; place face down on paper towels and sponge with cleaning fluid ; wash. Chewing gum - Harden with ice ; scrap with dull knife ; can soften with egg white ; sponge face down on paper towels with cleaning fluid ; wash. Chocolate , coca- Soak in club soda or cool water with enzyme presoak ; sponge with cleaning fluid and later with detergent ; launder in hot water . Coffee, tea- Soak with enzyme presoak or oxygen bleach; rub with detergent ; wash with hot water. Cosmetics Dampen and rub with detergent ; rinse ; sponge with cleaning fluid ; wash in water as hot as fabric care permits. Crayon Scrape ( can loose with cooking oil) ; spray with prewash or rub with detergent ;rinse; sponge with cleaning fluid face down on paper towels ; rinse ;launder in hot water with bleach. Deodorants- Scrub with vinegar or alcohol; rinse ; rub with liquid detergent ; wash hot. Eggs- If dried , scrape with dull knife ; soak in cool water with enzyme presoak; rub with detergent ; launder in hot water.

Felt-tip pen ink- Rub with strong household wall and counter cleaner ; rinse ; repeat if needed; launder ; this stain may not come out . Fingernail polish- Sponge with cotton nail-polish remover and all other fabrics with amyl acetate ( banana oil) ; scrap with dull knife ; wash. Fruits and juices- Soak with enzyme presoak; wash. If stain remain , cover with paste of oxygen bleach and a few drops of ammonia for 15 to 20 minutes . can also try white vinegar ; wash as hot as possible . Grass- Soak in enzyme presoak ; rinse ; rub with detergent ; hot wash with bleach ; if stain remains, sponge with alcohol. Grease- Scrap off all excess or apply absorbent powder ( talcum or cornstarch) and brush off ; pre treat with strong detergent ;rinse; sponge with cleaning fluid; hot was extra detergent ; bleach if safe. Gravy- Scrap with dull knife ; soak in enzyme presoak; treat with detergent paste and later cleaning fluid; hot wash with bleach if safe. Assignment ASSQC
