Falls Little League opens 22nd season

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
Undeterred by cool and rainy weather, the Menomonee Falls Little League opened its 22nd season the morning of May 5 with remarks from new league president Mark McLeanwho this year took the reins from eight-year president Eliot Chertackwelcomed the players, parents, coaches and volunteers by thanking them for all their hard work. This year we are celebrating our 22nd yearthat is fantastic, that is a long, long time he said. With approximately 1,100 boys and girls on 90 teams, the League is the largest in the district, McLean noted. Surprisingly after 22 years we are not the oldest Little League in the district, but we are the largest, not only in the district, but in southeastern Wisconsin, he said. That is a remarkable feat for the community and it absolutely amazes me when I talk about it. Im deeply proud to be part of this organization, McLean added. The new president shared some of the details of his journey from Little League dad 14 years ago to his current post. Ive been given quite a task...It was already an excellent-run program when I came in, said McLean who went from spectator to T-Ball coach to VP of Baseball. My friend joked, You wont be happy until youre president.

However, McLean wasnt sure he wanted to sign on for what he viewed as a stressful job. I saw what Eliot did and I thought, No way, I cant do that, he said. I thought, All these fields, all these people, thats on me. I thought that until the time I reluctantly agreed (to be president). That was when McLean had an epiphany and realized he was sharing the responsibility and vision with the 30member Board of Directorsand everyone else dedicated to the organization. They are just as passionate about this as me, and that also extends to you, he said to the crowd. Its not all me; we could not exist without you. McLean concluded by thanking all the Leagues volunteers and sponsors To the volunteers, he said, We can not stress enough how much you mean to the program. We could not do it without you. Without the sponsors, we could not function at this level. Thank you to all of you, McLean said. The event included the player parade during which each of the Leagues teams is announced and the players walk the baseline.

Subcontractors seeking payment for work at Falls Radisson

Representatives for three subcontractors on the Radisson Hotel project told the Menomonee Falls Village Board May 7 they still have not been paid for work on the building. During the citizen comment portion of the meeting, Thomas Malzewski of Heritage Glass said he is owed $57,129 work on the hotel. Barry Bloom, a representative from Assured Power, said the company is still owed $68,500 after months of the village ensuring us that funds were available in escrow and safe for us to be paid for the final amount of work that we did. We are still left with no answers and as of about five weeks ago we were officially told the village is no longer answering any of our questions in regard to this project, Bloom said. Bloom said the company isnt getting answers or direction from the village as to the money it is owed. Greg Hughson of Assured Power said we did everything that was asked of us by the general contractor and the village signed off on all work that was done. Were looking for answers of whats going on with this, Hughson said. Suzie Beard of Badger Lighting and Signs said her company is owed $47,500. She also said that communication with the village has stopped in recent months. The hotel is in the village sixth tax incremental finance (TIF) district, which was created to pay for infrastructure improvements to the area to allow for development. The village provided financing for the hotel in the form of a $17.6 million loan which was approved in April 2010. The reduction of the principal for the loan is to occur over the first four years the hotel is open. After the presentation to the board, Bloom explained that the project was paid for with municipal bonds. However, the general contractor for the project went bankrupt and the project is now in receivership. As a result, Bloom stated that the village holds the purse strings on the project. Menomonee Falls Village Attorney Michael Morse had no comment on the matter. A spokesperson for the Radisson hotel chain stated the local hotel should be contacted regarding such concerns. A message was left at the hotel seeking comment. While the hotel opened in May 2011, a receiver was appointed by a Waukesha County Circuit Judge in November to oversee its operations. The motion came as the hotel ownership group was facing several civil lawsuits. "The villages decision to seek the appointment of a receiver is based upon the policy direction of the Village Board of Trustees to protect the asset value, revenue, and operations of the hotel in this current period when outside litigation, not involving the Village, could potentially interfere with the hotel and its operations. The receiver will maintain the status quo of the hotel operations, and will regularly monitor all Hotel activities to ensure that the hotel is operating in an appropriate financial manner," the village said in a statement at that time. Falls Village Board notes

Road, sidewalk contracts approved The board approved a contract with Stark Asphalt May 7 for applying boiler slag to roads. The contract will be for $334,016.25. Trustee Michael McDonald said the boiler slag will be applied in the Ravenswood, Creekwood Highlands, Overlook Trail, River Heights North and Lilly Creek Highlands subdivisions. The board also approved the sidewalk replacement and repair contract for an north of Appleton Avenue, west of Pilgrim Road north to Hwy. 45. The village program allows residents to contract on their own to have the sidewalks replaced. Any replacement or repairs not completed before July 15 will be done by a contractor working for the village. Pepsi wins village beverage contract The board approved a contract with Bottling Group LLC (which represents Pepsi) for beverage vending rights in certain village parks and facilities. According to information from village staff, the village entered a contract with Coca-Cola in 2005 which recently expired. Trustee Michael McDonald said staff is recommending the change to Pepsi because they offered a higher commission to the village. Brush pickup beginning The village spring brush pickup will begin May 14, Public Works Director Arlyn Johnson said in a report to the Village Board. Residents are asked to place brush at the curb or street line by May 13. The pickup is for brush that is up to six inches in diameter and no longer than four feet. Johnson said the village will not accept any stumps, roots or shrubbery and will not pick up yard waste. Johnson said the village is also requesting that the brush not be placed in containers. Johnson said the brush is ground up and provided to residents as mulch. Village President Randy Newman noted that the village is requesting the brush be set at curbside by May13 because once a village crew goes through a neighborhood it will not come back a second time. Tree City designation Johnson noted that the village has received the Tree City designation for the 12th consecutive year by the Arbor Day Foundation. To qualify for Tree City status, a community must have a tree or park board, have a tree care ordinance, have a forestry budget of $2 per capita and hold an annual Arbor Day observance. The village also received a Tree City Growth Award, which requires having Tree City status for two years and spending as much as in past years on community forestry programs. By Thomas J. For some reason long ago, people started spreading the poor advice to others with foot problems to soak their feet in hot water, with or without some soaking additive. This is definitely WRONG. Never soak your feet in hot water. Even some whirlpools and spas are too hot for safety. Hot water can cause a dilatation of the blood vessels allowing blood clots to move if present. This could result in a stroke or heart attack. Hot water will also cause continued swelling of a foot or ankle resulting in continued pain of the foot, ankle or toes. Usually swelling will respond to cool or cold treatment, but if you are a diabetic or have poor circulation, you should see a Podiatrist before doing anything.
