Sussex permits beer sales at concert series

Employees allowed to serve alcohol at event
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Sussex Village Board approved a motion May 8 that would allow village staff to serve alcohol at events in the park. In a memo to the board, Village Administrator Jeremy Smith stated the village recently started a community music series and is seeking help to establish the event. Smith noted that many communities hold music events and sell beer to help cover the cost of the event. Smith explained that an exemption is granted under state law that allows for the sale of malt beverages in parks by municipal employees and the same law grants specific immunity from civil liability. Smith stated the employees selling beer will undergo training and the practice will be overseen by administrative policy. Communities throughout this state sell beer in parks and people enjoy alcohol responsibly at these types of events very regularly. There is not a compelling reason to believe the same will not be true of the village of Sussex patrons at the Community Music Series, Smith stated in the memo. There has not been a rash of problems throughout the state because municipal employees in these positions have a high standard to follow as a nature of their jobs and the event are designed and attended by people looking for a relaxing evening, not a party. At the start of Village Board discussion, Trustee Jason Wegner said the village Finance and Personnel Committee didnt reach a recommendation following discussion and sent the matter up to the board with no recommendation. Village President Greg Goetz noted that Elm Grove and Brookfield are among the communities serving alcohol at park events.

continue to do. Trustee Tim Dietrich said he has no problem with the proposed resolution. He said if the village does come across problems it can reverse course and suspend the resolution. Im very much against this, Wegner said of the proposal. I understand theres limited risk by the employees, I understand theres limited risk to the village, theres just the perception out there that the village will be serving alcohol at these events. Wegner noted that in other communities alcohol is served under a controlled environment. He noted that serving alcohol comes with a great responsibility. To put that responsibility on village
employees for something that I dont think is going to bring a big return to the event if anything, the way Ive always thought of it is this is supposed to be a family events and now were talking this is a more adult-oriented event, Wegner said. Im worried were taking away the family atmosphere of the event. Waukesha County Sheriffs Lt. Torin Misko said he has no concerns as long as the village monitors how the alcohol is served. The board approved the resolution 4-2. Goetz joined Dietrich, Pat Tetzlaff and Bob Zarzynski in voting for the resolution while Wegner and Jim Batzko voted in dissent.

Hamilton students score high in financial capability challenge

Hamilton High School students taking the Personal Finance course in the business education department posted outstanding results in the National Financial Capability Challenge. More than 80,000 students throughout the country participated in the challenge. The Hamilton class average was 81 percent, and the nationwide average was 69 percent. Students who placed in the top 20th percentile received a certificate from the U.S. Department of the Treasury in honor of their accomplishment. Hamilton students receiving certificates -- including four students who scored in the top 10th percentile -- are: Allison Bitz, Shannon Desorcy, Fabiola Gallegos, Breanne Gartmann, Zachary Kasun, Daniel Smith, Elizabeth Voss and Hannah Zielinski. The National Financial Capability Challenge is an awards program designed to increase the financial knowledge and capability of high school aged-youth across the U.S. so they can take control over their financial futures. The main competencies covered in the challenge include earning, saving, borrowing and protecting against risk.

Credit card fraud A female resident from the W17000 block of Ava Circle reported April 26 that she had been the victim of credit card fraud. Disorderly conduct A 37-year-old woman was removed from a residence in the W15000 block of

Main Street at 3:35 a.m. April 28 after behaving in a disorderly manner toward two male subjects. The woman was intoxicated at the time of the incident. A 54-year-old man was arrested for operating while intoxicated at 2:22 a.m. April 27 following a traffic stop in the W15000 block of Donges Bay Road. A 14-year-old boy was cited for stealing two pairs of headphones from Walgreens, W156 N11261 Pilgrim Rd., April 27. The following report was taken from records at the Menomonee Falls Police Department. Disorderly conduct A 34-year-old Menomonee Falls woman was cited for disorderly conduct at 7:47 p.m. April 27 at a residence in the W17000 block of Ann Avenue. Investigation revealed she had damaged items during an argument with her husband. Retail theft A 21-year-old woman was cited for retail theft at 10:58 a.m. April 25 after shoplifting childrens clothing from Target, N95 W17707 Shady Lane. Theft A woman from the N8000 block of Jefferson Avenue reported May 6 that a Toshiba laptop and an undisclosed amount of cash had been removed from her apartment bedroom. A Dell laptop computer valued at $2,000 was removed from a vehicle in the Applebees parking lot, W180 N9469 Premier Lane. Entry to the vehicle was gained through the smashing of the rear passenger side window. Warrants A 41-year-old Milwaukee woman was taken into custody on three Menomonee Falls warrants at 12:47 a.m. May 6 after she was stopped by Brown Deer police in the 4800 block of Green Brook Drive, Brown Deer. The woman was placed in the county jail. A 24-year-old Milwaukee woman was taken into custody on two Menomonee Falls warrants at 11:34 p.m. May 6 following a traffic stop at Appleton Avenue and Ridge Road. Drug violation A 29-year-old man was taken into custody on a drug violation at 11:36 p.m. April 26 following a traffic stop at Maple Road and Carnegie Drive. He was placed in jail. This three-session workshop is designed for those with a family member or friend recently diagnosed with Alzheimers disease or a related dementia. The program will include an overview of dementia, communication strategies, behavior changes, safety issues, community resources and personal care for the caregiver. There will also be an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with others who are coping with similar situations. This program is being provided by the Alzheimers Association at no charge, and is open to the public. Falls girls first at Burling Invite

The Menomonee Falls girls track team narrowly won the Ron Burling Invite May 8, topping second place West Bend West by two points. Menomonee Falls was led by Mikayla Robertson, who won the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.09. Robertson also won the triple jump by covering 37 feet 5 inches and placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.04. Alex Poole, won the long jump with a distance of 17-6.75. Poole also placed third in the shot put with a toss of 3311. The Falls 4x200 meter relay team won the event with a time 1:47.82 while the 4x100 meter relay team finished second with a time of 51.39. Other top finishes came from the 4x400 meter relay team, which finished second with a time of 3:28.80; and Megan Paule, who finished third in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:10.23 Hamilton finished in girls competition. First place finishes came from Toney Lock, who won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 12.61; and Shannon Burke, who won the pole vault by crossing the bar at 10-6 Hamiltons 4x100 meter relay team won the event with a time of 50.47. Other top finishes came from Ashlyn Paulson, who finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:25.07; and Shannon Downs, who finished third in the same event with a time of 2:27.76. The Germantown boys team finished second at the event. Germantown was led by Ben Holcomb, who won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.55 and the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 39.59; and Chasen Brown, who won the 110 meter dash with a time of 11.07. Other top finishes came from Bobby Stemm, who finished second in the shot put with a distance of 50-1; and Jason Townsend, who finished third in the long jump with a distance of 20-7 Menomonee Falls finished sixth in boys competition. Matt Christensen was the top individual finisher for Menomonee Falls, placing second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.03. The 4x400 meter relay team finished second with a time of 3:28.80. Other top finishes came from the 4x800 meter relay team, which finished third with a time of 8:17.91;the 4x200 meter relay, which finished third with a time of 1:32.32; Dan Hyde, who finished third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:04.00; and Adrian Roscher, who finished third in the high jump by crossing the bar at 5-8. Hamilton finished 12th in the boys competition. The top finish came from Dan McKee, who finished third in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:44.44.

Soccer: Falls tops Hamilton

Menomonee Falls followed up a successful showing at the Manitowoc Lincoln tournament with a conference win over a nearby rival. Menomonee Falls tied Green Bay Preble May 1-1, with Menomonee Falls' goal coming from Jen Eberhardy off an assist by Anna Smalley. The next day, Menomonee Falls won two games at the Lincoln tournament, beating Sheboygan Christian 10-0 and Campbellsport 6-0. The Indians returned to Greater Metro Conference play with a 2-0 win at Hamilton May 8. Menomonee Falls got on the board at the 32nd minute as Nelly Botticelli scored off an assist by Cassie Poeske. Menomonee Falls kept the ball on Hamilton's side of the field early in the second half, and converted an opportunity at the 55th minute as Poeske scored off an assist by Olivia Dennis. After the Hamilton contest Menomonee Falls was fourth in the Greater Metro with a 2-3 conference record and 7-5 overall mark. Hamilton dropped to 2-3 in conference (sixth place) and 7-5 overall. Germantown remained in second place in the North Shore Conference with a 4-1 conference record and a 10-2-1 overall mark following an 11-1 win over Port Washington May 8. Kettle Moraine Lutheran was in first place in the WIsconsin Flyway Conference following a 2-0 win at St. Mary Springs May 8. The Chargers got goals from Siera Skow and Rachel Balge. Balge assisted on the first goal (33rd minute) while Olivia Heckendorf assisted on the second goal (44th minute).

Menomonee Falls was in first place in the Greater Metro Conference following wins over Divine Savior Holy Angels last week. Menomonee Falls beat the Dashers 10-0 May 7 and 16-0 the next day. Kelly Berglund was the winning pitcher May 7 while Nikki Festge got the win the next day. Afterward, Menomonee Falls had an 8-1 conference record and a 11-3 overall mark. For some reason long ago, people started spreading the poor advice to others with foot problems to soak their feet in hot water, with or without some soaking additive. This is definitely WRONG. Never soak your feet in hot water. Even some whirlpools and spas are too hot for safety. Hot water can cause a dilatation of the blood vessels allowing blood clots to move if present. This could result in a stroke or heart attack. Hot water will also cause continued swelling of a foot or ankle resulting in continued pain of the foot, ankle or toes. Usually swelling will respond to cool or cold treatment, but if you are a diabetic or have poor circulation, you should see a Podiatrist before doing anything.

Seniors should stay alert for scammers

May is Older Americans Month, a good time to focus on consumer issues affecting our seniors. While everyone is a potential target, older consumers are particularly vulnerable to fraudulent schemes, making them a favorite target of scammers. Unfortunately, many seniors are victimized each year through a host of crooked schemes, suffering financial injury in the millions of dollars. Some frauds are designed specifically to victimize seniors. A current example is the socalled grandparent scam. Heres how it works. Using information available on the internet or elsewhere, a fraudster telephones an elderly consumer and pretends to be the persons grandchild with some sort of dire emergency, such as having been in an accident or arrested in another country. Inevitably, the grandchild needs money immediately wired to him or her, and asks that the grandparent not tell the grandchilds parents. Frequently the call will come at a time designed to catch the grandparent off guard, such as early in the morning or late at night. Unfortunately, this scam works. Every year seniors are defrauded of millions of dollars by this scam and its many variations. Charitable solicitors also prey heavily on older consumers, deliberately taking advantage of their generosity. While there are many legitimate charities, many telephone solicitations for charitable donations result in the vast majority of the donations going to a for-profit telemarketer, with very little money going to the actual charity. Worse, donating through one of these for-profit telemarketers can lead to the consumer being called more frequently in the future, and for many other charities. One practice that has changed little involves the promise of a prize or free service to lure the consumer into agreeing to purchase items that are unwanted, overpriced, or both. Finally, identity theft continues to grow as a serious problem affecting all consumers, including older citizens. While sometimes the consumer has no way to prevent this, scammers often succeed in duping consumers to hand over their credit card, bank account or other financial information, which they then use to

To enhance my offices ability to keep Wisconsin consumers safe from fraudulent practices, I recently created an independent Consumer Protection and Antitrust Unit within the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The new unit will continue the traditional consumer protection efforts of the Department, with additional staff that will increase the resources available to address consumer fraud. Here are some basic tips for avoiding consumer frauds: Take time to think about a request or offer. Scammers do best when their targets feel like they must make an immediate decision or take immediate action. If you feel pressured to do something before you are completely comfortable, trust your instincts and delay the decision until your questions and concerns have been answered. Be wary of requests to wire money if you are not absolutely sure where it is going and who is going to receive it. If you get a suspicious call from or involving a grandchild or other family member, try to contact the relative or other family members first to verify the facts. If you are the grandchild or family member of an older person, warn them of this scheme and tell them that you would not put them in this position. The old adage remains a good guide: If it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is. This applies to claims you have been awarded a prize, won a lottery, or are entitled to free goods or services. Check out the business or promotion carefully (the Better Business Bureau is one good resource) before agreeing to participate. Realize that responding to a telephone solicitation for a charitable donation may mean that less than 10% (and sometimes virtually none) of your donation may actually be spent for charitable purposes. If you believe you have been victimized by dishonest conduct, you should file a complaint with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
