BURRIS LOGISTICS STANDARDIZES
ON EMC FOR ITS VMWARE
VIRTUALIZED IT ENVIRONMENT
EMC Corporation has
announced that Burris
Logistics has standardized
its information infrastructure on EMC
selecting EMC Symmetrix VMAX and
EMC unied storage over NetApp and
IBM for its exceptional reliability, perfor-
mance and value. Its EMC infrastructure
has enabled Burris to easily virtualize
80% of its IT infrastructure with VMware
vSphere virtualization and cloud infra-
structure technologies as it moves to the
cloud achieving more than $1 million in
cost savings by virtualizing and consoli-
dating its server footprint.
Bill Poore, Director of Infrastructure,
Burris Logistics, said, Burris prides itself
on something we call wow service
going above and beyond our customers
expectations. VMAX ts perfectly into
that strategic focus. It has met our six-9s
uptime goal while delivering outstanding
performance and reducing our costs.
These attributes make a signicant dif-
ference in our business.
Since implementing VMAX, we have
doubled our storage capacity without
increasing our power and cooling usage.
Having a mix of Flash, Fibre Channel
and SATA drives in a single system
gives us agility to respond to chang-
ing business demands and continue to
grow without sacricing performance or
availability. In addition, our total cost of
ownership savings is well in excess of
$1 million as a result of virtualizing and
consolidating our server footprint, Bill
Poore further added.

What is your job title?
Business Process Manager
Briefy describe what you do at
Burris?
As the Business Process Manager my responsibilities
include the development and implementation of business
and project management processes for the IT department.
I am also responsible for the QA (Quality Assurance) and
BA (Business Analyst) groups.
Why Burris?
Culture and being able to come into a smaller company
and grow with the company.
What did you do before you came to work with Burris?
Prior to joining the Burris team I had my own software and
consulting company and had been working as a consultant

pany specialized in the food service and distribution busi-
ness providing demand planning and project management
services to several leading companies in the industry.
What do you like to do when you arent working at
Burris?
Having lived in Florida for the last 11 years, when I am not

I have a 30 or 40 minute break between work (and the
honey dos) I like to practice for future 5K races.

River with my 2 younger sisters. After completing my

What is your job title?
Database Administrator
Briefy describe what you do at
Burris?
I will be working as the database
Administrator to implement, maintain
and upgrade databases associated
applications such as V4, V8, Clarity, etc.
Why Burris?
I frst got interested (in Burris) when I found out about
some of the innovative ways Informations systems were
being used and the use of open-source (software develop-
ment tools) in the environment. I knew I wanted to work
here when they described the people and the Burris way.
I had been working for a company for 14 years that had
a similar philosophy and would have stayed there for my
career if I could have. I did ask around to fnd out if this was
being oversold. To my surprise I got the same response
from people that did/do work for Burris. My decision was
made at that point.
What did you do before you came to work with Burris?
For the last 4 years I had been working at Bayhealth Medi-
cal center as an Oracle Database administrator and for the
14 years prior to that I worked with Happy Harrys Drug
store as Director of Information Systems.
What do you like to do when you arent working at
Burris?
I enjoy spending most of my time with my family, either
taking trips or just getting the kids together and hanging out
at the house. If I get time I also like to work on small wood-
working projects out in my garage.
Tell us a little about yourself (where are you from?
family? etc.)
I was born in Wilmington, Delaware and am the young-
est of 5 children. I grew up in Newark, DE and moved to
Clayton, DE about 13 years ago. I have been married for
22 years to my high school sweetheart and we were lucky

and Ashley is 16. Later on we were able to add another
member to our family, Chris is age 16, and he has been
part of our lives for the past 10 years. We also have 2 dogs

Mercy sakes alive, looks like we
got us a convoy ...
Well I came back and I said before you go 10-
10
Whats your home 20 little CB friend
He gave me his address and I didnt once
hesitate
Cause this hot load of freight would just have
to wait
I turned that truck around on a dime
And headed straight for Jackson Street 229
And as I rounded the corner oh I got one the heck of a shock
18-wheelers were lined up for three city blocks
I guess every driver for miles around had caught Teddy Bears call
And that little crippled boy was havin a ball
For as fast as one driver would carry him in
Another would carry him to his truck and take off again
Well you better believe I took my turn rifin Teddy Bear
And then carried him back in and put him down in his chair
And buddy if I never live to see happiness again
I want you to know I saw it that day in the face of that little man
We took up a collection for him before his mama got home
And each driver said goodbye and then they were all gone
He shook my hand with a mile long grin and
said so long trucker Ill catch you again
Ah I hit that Interstate with tears in my eyes
I turned on the radio and I got another
surprise
Breaker 1-9 came the voice on the air
Just one word of thanks from mama Teddy
Bear
We wish each and everyone a special
prayer for you
Cause you just made my little boys dream
come true
Ill sign off now before I start to cry may
God ride with you 10-4 and goodbye

Get It Right
CONGRATULATIONS GIL AYON
WAREHOUSEMAN OF THE YEAR
Steve Cunrod, Warehouse Manager,
nominated Gil Ayon for Refrigiwears
Warehouseman of the year:
While working in loading areas, Gils ability
to teach and demonstrate to other loaders
has been well maintained. New loaders try
to ensure that they load like Gil.
With 9 years of loading, Gils skill
set in impeccable. This past year, he
accomplished loading 8 trucks per day, 40
trucks per week and 1,896 trucks per year.
In that year, he loaded 53,098 pallets, 28
pallets per hour.
Through the 9 years we have seen
selectors, checkers and BJs meat
scanners ask Gil for the best resolutions to
pallet concerns. Gil will always provide an
answer.
Gil has built a great repertoire with the
customer, co-workers and supervisors.
When challenges arise, he faces them
diplomatically. When or if criticism is given,
he responds well.
There are certain parameters that the
loaders must adhere to. Gil had taken
those challenges to the next level. The
trailers that depart for the Southern clubs
but go through the scale house. There
must have over 4,500 pounds on the front
axle. Gil has yet to have one of his loaded
trailers come back for a re-load!
When Gils trailers are fully loaded, it is
worth it to take a picture. He arranges the
pallets so that the tallest ones are in the
nose and the shortest pallets are on the
tail. The freight looks like a set of steps.
He accomplishes this in the perspective
time frame on a daily basis!
In only nine years Gil Ayon has made a strong and significant
impression at Burris Logistics. Efficient, driven, and a skilled
problem-solver, Gils abilities are commendable in terms of
both productivity and customer service. On the production
side, in the past year he accomplished loading eight trucks per
day, 40 per week, 1,896 per year. In that year alone he loaded
53,098 pallets. Gil has a certain finesse, loading pallets neatly
by size while staying productive within a tight time frame.
His personality and charisma lead to a good rapport with
customers as well as with his coworkers.

Make It Happen
Because Ive been preaching safety for so many years here at Burris, my mind drew a blank of what to say
that you havent already heard. So, I simply typed in the word safety into the Merriam-Webster Dictionary
web-site, here is what I got back....
Noun- Safety: freedom from harm or danger: state of being safe
My goal is for everyone working for Burris Logistics to STOP. SLOW DOWN and
read the above definition again...let the words sink in. I want these simple words
to be a way of life for all of us working together at Burris. Yes, they are just a few
words but, as a co-worker, friend, husband, son and a father, these words would
mean everything to my family.
I have the opportunity to walk the floors of each facility. I have seen the photos you
have of each other and your photos of your families. Let these photos of your loved
ones remind us that we all want freedom from or danger.
Please protect ourselves, our families and the Burris Brand. Lets put these words to action!

When asked what qualifes a driver for Driver of the Quarter, several things factor in. A driver must demonstrate
good customer service while being safe and effcient. A driver should also keep accurate records for both DOT and
billing purposes. The driver should have a steady attendance record and demonstrate a strong work ethic and posi-
tive attitude. Many times the driver is the only face
that the customer has to identify with Burris. Its always
a challenge each quarter for Leslie Pyfer (Director of
Transportation) to narrow down the candidates. 2010
was no different, but William Strawberry and Vaughn
Todd edged out their fellow team members to take the
titles for the 2nd and 3rd Quarter. Both men continue
to strive to improve their skills while implementing the
above characteristics. Whether its a weekly long haul
or a daily delivery, both men exceed the expectations.
Congratulations to both men, and continued success.

Smith Brothers TAKE TOP HONORS AS STARS
OF THE QUARTER FOR THE 3RD QUARTER
Brothers DeAndre and Jef Smith are week-in & week-out top performers. Both men work in the shipping depart-
ment as order selectors. Both men receive equal praise from their peers
and their supervisors. Its hard to distinguish the better performer as both
brothers are within cases of each other each night. Some nights it may be
DeAndre taking the lead and then here comes Jef reclaiming the title
the next night. Not quite sure if it is sibling rivalry but whatever it is, its
working. Not only did DeAndre and Jef inherit a hard work ethic, both
men are genuinely nice guys. Tey come to work; they work hard and
make a tough job look efortless. Congratulations to you both.
Supervisors Stanford Ricks and Steve
Clarkson congratulate DeAndre and
Jeff Smith for their performance.

New Castle
Celebrates
Customer
Service Week
In 1992 the U.S. Congress proclaimed the first
week of October as Customer Service Week,
an international event devoted to honoring
and showing appreciation to the people who
serve and support customers as well as raising
awareness of how priceless excellent customer
service is to successful businesses.
New Castle observed Customer Service Week
with three days of celebrations. On Tuesday we
enjoyed ice cream sundaes for The Coolest
Customer Service Team and participated in a
Minute to Win It competition. If you have ever
watched the TV show
Minute to Win It, you
know that contestants
have to do things like
bouncing three quarters
into a bottle with a
narrow neck within one
minute. We set up five
minute to win it games
with different degrees of
difficulty to demonstrate
how important a minute
can be with a customer
and how important it is
to keep our cool when
presented with a call that is more difficult than
our normal calls. Attached are some pictures of
our contestants. Voted the best game was
Cookie Face, which involves tilting your head
back and placing an Oreo cookie on your
forehead. The object is to get the cookie in your
mouth by walking it down your face without the
benefit of using your hands. We laughed so
hard at the faces we made trying to reach our
goal. Score was Cookie 7 Contestants 0. Other
games we tried were stacking three golf balls,
balancing 6 dice on a popsicle stick held
between your teeth, bouncing three balls into a
basket allowing only one bounce each, and
blowing up a balloon
and using the air from
the balloon to push
paper cups off a table.
Wednesday we treated
our Customer Service
Reps with omelets
by Omelet King for
breakfast
and a lunch cooked
and served by our
managers, Brian
Haley, Robert
Marston, Wayne
Couts, and
Kathy Durand.
Thursday our
Customer Service
Reps received our
appreciation gift, a
picture frame for their
desks surrounded by
a mesh frame that
holds appreciation
buttons they can earn
throughout the year.
They each received a
frame and two buttons
to get them started. Throughout the next year
they can earn buttons for times they go the
extra mile and for milestone goals such as
logging in one thousand calls.
We had a great week honoring our Customer
Service Reps: Kristy Branham, Shavon Wilks-
Taylor, Sheena Whittle, Stephanie Tatem, Kelly
Blackburn, Jennifer Willey, and Sherri Maneval
and want to take this opportunity to let them and
all our team members who work directly with
our customers know how much we appreciate
the excellent customer service they provide our
customers.
Thank you all for everything you do every day

LYNDHURST, VIRGINIA
TWO YEARS WITHOUT A LOST
TIME ACCIDENT!
On November 14th, 2011, the Lyndhurst Facility went two years since the last record-
ed lost time accident! Although this fantastic accomplishment is the culmination of a total team effort over the past 730
days, team members truly understand that each step of this process is made through individual choices and decisions
that are made each and every day. By being responsible and accountable to themselves, team members fnd that their
actions and behaviors are held to a higher standard by their co-workers. This is the essence of a true safety culture.
Working safely most of the time is not acceptable; our ultimate goal is ZERO accidents all of the time!
Two years with no lost time is no easy feat; I am very proud of our team here in Lyndhurst who have done a
fantastic job with safety, being proactive, actively participating and making good decisions, stated General Manager
Mike Piscitelli. We have only marked 2 years as a milestone because we all know and understand we cant stop there.
I look forward to celebrating our next milestone of 802 days, a facility record
Up next: shattering the facility lost time accident record of 801 days! While some may question the audacity of
stating that a safety record is within sight (can you hear the sound of knuckles knocking on wood?), it is important for
everyone at Lyndhurst to strive to meet performance goals that actually measure the effectiveness of our safety pro-
gram. Numbers and records are the milestones we use to set performance goals, but the real measure of our success
is that everyone goes home safe at the end of each working day to their families and loved ones. Congratulations To
All!

Billy Joe Gri n, a Burris original, the likes of which set the
foundation for the organization we know and love today.
Billy Joe Gri n died today, surrounded by his loved ones, July 21, 2011
at 2pm in the afternoon. Billy Gri n was a die hard Burris team mate
who always spoke with great pride when he said I work at Burris. It was
well known amongst his family and friends that Billy loved the company
he worked for. To him, Burris was more than a collection of bricks and
mortar. To Billy Gri n, Burris meant family and a job that allowed him
a decent wage with good benets. All he had to do was show up, work hard
and reap the benets of the job he loved. And as stated above, he did it with
great pride. Billy Joe Gri n worked for us a total of 25+ years. He was an
original. With his ever-present bandana head-band and beard, you could
nd Billy either at work running his crane or after work, running a lawn
mower and weed trimmer taking care of the many lawns that he had as a
side business for many years. Billy was a working man. Its as simple as that.
He knew the value and importance of a hard days work, something that
so many of todays youth seem to lack. He set a good example for his son, so
much so that we hired him seven years ago. He is proving to be a chip o the
old block God bless you Billy.

ANNIVERSARY
The last few years, especially
2010 and 2011 when we lost
seven active team members, have
been tough on the team mates in
the Harrington facility. During this
some of the Old Guard, the men
and women who helped get this
company on its feet and humming,
went on to the Great Reward.
These folks had no less than 20
years of service, most had over 25
years and some over 40! And they
werent just run of the mill, every
day employees. On the contrary,
they were people who made a
difference in their surroundings
every day by doing more than was
required of the job. They went
that extra mile. They are the ones
upon whom the phrases WOW
Service, Make It Happen, and
Get It Right were built. They were
the originators. The list is far too
long to mention all of the men
and women who comprised the
back-bone of the Old Guard so
let us be brief and mention some
of the ones who went on to their
reward with our Lord. It is with
great honor and distinction that we
include their names in this edition
of the Burris Gazette. They are:
Paul Rowland- Truck Driver
Tony Legates- Warehouseman and
Manager
Eugene Donald- Truck Driver
Paul Chandler- Warehouseman
George Burton- Warehouseman
Earl Cole- Warehouseman and
Manager
Louise Short- Warehouse Woman
Billy Joe Griffin- Warehouseman
Bob Burris- Warehouseman, Truck
Driver, Manager and Owner (We at
Harrington always considered Bob
to be ours)
