3 December 1970 1. SCOPE is 1.1 Object. The object of this stancbxrd to-establisha common color code for visual warnings to accompanythe written identification of materials covered in piping systems and contained in compressedgas , a cylinders and to facilitatethe segregationof these cylinders t depots. The use of this standardwill promote greater safety snd wilJ lessen the chances of error, confusion,or inaction in times of emergency by providing a uniform color code to quickly warn personnel of outstfidinghazards inherent in the materials involved. However, this standard does not define the manner or conditionsunder which these materialsmay be used safely. 1.2 Application. This standard is applicableto all ground based piping systems and to alJ.compressedgas cylinders owned by or procured for the Department of Defense includingtype D one-ton containers (Departmentof TransportationSpecification1OGA-5OO). The applicability of this standardto industrypiping systems and cmmnercial-owned cylinders (see 5.2.5.1) is encouraged. Requirementsspecifiedherein are optional for hose linesand nozzles, ship installations, equipment intended for operationsin forward area facilities, steam plants, and method for bulk petrole~ hydroelectricplants. The identification product systems is covered in MIL-STD-161. The identificationof pipe lines for aircraft, missiles, and space vehicles is covered in MILSTD-1247.Color coding for contain&s of liquid propellantsis covered in MIL-STD-172. 1.3 Method. This standard establishes, defines, and assigns a color for recognitionto each of six classes of materials. Five classes have been selected to representuniversallyrecognizedtypes of hazards involved in the handling of dangerous gases and liquids. The sixth class is assigned for exclusiveuse of fire protectionmaterials and equipment. This standard requires the applicationof the color warnings in a distinctive manner, as a visual aid and supplementto written identification. 2. REFERENCEDDOCUMENTS 2.1 The issues of the foil.uwing ocuments in effect on the date of d invitationfor bids form a part of this standardto the extent specified herein. ( FEDERAL TANDARD 595 - Colors. Piping system identification.

ofmaterials in any 5.1.1 .... Ezact identification. Exact identification piping system for hazamiousmaterials and the use classificationfor fire protectionis mandatory and shtil be made only by means of titles lettered in black or white. These titles shall be prominentlydisplayed adjacent to color wmings to obviate errors by personnel. It is recommended, where the view is unobstructed, that titles be lettered on the two lower quarters of the pipe or covering. Lettering in this position is unlikely to be obscured by dust collection or mectu+nical damage. However, titles should be clearly visible from operatingpositions, especiallythose adjacent to control valves. The use of stencils with standard size letters specifiedin table I is recommended. For pipe lines smaller than 3/4 inch in diameter, the use of securely fastenedmetal tags, with lettering etched or filled in with enamel,is suggested. It is recommendedthat titles be applied by use of upper case letters and erabic numerals whenever applicable. Table I. . color warning shall appear 5.1.3.1 Use and application. A primary on aJJ dangerous piping systems and on all fire protectionmaterials in any installationwhich is color cciied accordancewith this in standard Primary color warnings shall consist of a single color . applied as a band or bands which completelyencircle the piping system. Color bands shall be applied in conformancewith dimensional infofiationshown on fig&e 1. In lieu of color bands, all pipe and covering on an entire system, includingall encirclingor partial.Q encirclingstraps, hangers, and supports, msy be painted with the color warning. However, the use of color bands is preferred primary because they will indicate dangerous systems to color-blindpersonnel.

a 5.1.3.2 Location on piping systems. Inmediatel.ydjacent to all operating accessoriessuch as valves, regulators, flowchecks, strainers, cle=outs~ pumps, dispensingpoints, and vents, all coded piping systems shall be painted with a primary color warning. In addition, Pr_ color ~ings shall be painted throughoutthe system at convenient intervals,e.g., where branch lines join the system, where the system passes underground or through walls, and at any other conspicuousplaces where warnings &e required by safety authorities. If desired, operating accessoriesmay also be painted with the primary color warning. 5.1.4 Arrows and second ary color warnings. An arrow shape shall appear on coded piping systems in any installationwhich is color coded in accordancewith this standard. Any material system possessing an outstandinghazard of a type distinctlydifferent from that indicated by its primary color warning shall have a secondary color warning applied in the shape of an arrow. The color of the arrow shall be selected according to the definitionsfor warning colors specified in 4.2. Systems which do not involve such additionalhazards shall have arrows either the same color as the primary warning, or black or white. When bands are used for the primary warnings, the colored =rows sh~ appear adjacent to each primary color warning applied to the piping system. When the entire piping system is painted with the primary color irarning, the colored arrows shall appear in all locationsspecified in 5.1..3.2. The arrows shall indicate the normal direction(s)of flow of material in the system. A double-headedarrow shall be placed on lines subject to reverse flow. Dimensional information is shown on figure 1. Tails may be omitted on arrows, creating triangles with one corner indicatingthe normal direction of flow. Operatingaccessories~ also be painted with the secondary color warning.

5.2.2 Exact identification. Exact identificationof any material .. contained in a compressedgas cylinder is msndatory and shall be made only by means of the written title as specified in table III. The title shall appear in two locations diametricallyopposite smd parallel to the longitudinalaxis of the cylinder. It is recommendedthat the titles be applied by use of upper case letters and arabic numerals whenever applicable. On cylinders4 inches in diameter and larger, the title shall be in approximately2-inc~ high letters. On cylinders less than 4 inches in diameter, letters may be reduced in size. Where a title includes a modifier, such as lmedical[t l;oil-free,l or the modifier shall follow the chemical designationand should be shown in letters approximtel.ythree-foufihsas high. Cylindershaving a background color of yellow, orange, or buff shall have the title painted with black letters. Cylindershaving a background color of red, brown, blue, gray, green, or black shall have the title painted with white letters. Mixtures of two or more gases shall show the percent of each gas as part of the title.

5.2.3 . of - Use colors.

5.2.3.1 . Color warn~~: The appearanceon the body, top, or as a baud(s) on compressedgas cylindersof any of the six colorsspecified in 4.2 shall provide a warning of danger from the hazsrd involved in handling the type of material contained in the cylinder accordingto the definitionsfor warning colors in 4.2. ,.
j.2.3.2 Qylinder colcnr band(s). Cylinder color bands appear upon the cylinder body and serve aa color warnings when they are yellow, brown, blue, green, or gray. The bands also provide color combinations to sepsxate and distinguishcylinders for conveniencein handling, storage, and shipping. Colorbands for segregationpurposes will not be specifiedfor new materials not presently covered by this standard when new color codes for them are assigned.

5.2.4 Painting of~linders. All cylinders shall be painted in accordancewith table 111 and figures 2 and 3 to provide uniform recognitionthroughoutthe Department of Defense.
