Sneak Fih annual International Festival to be held, peek... to celebrate culture from all corners of earth
News
By YASMEEN YAHYA News/Parents Editor Once again, Clements is hosting the annual International Festival, also more commonly known as iFest on Friday, March 13 from six to nine. The International Club and their president, senior Gloria Li, are hard at work putting it together so the students at Clements can have the chance to enrich themselves in cultural traditions, as well as enrich their bellies with delicious food. However, this type of entertainment does not often come free. Anyone can attend this event. Clements students should not fret because all the money that is raised at the festival goes to a local charity of the International Clubs choice. This year we chose the Fort Bend Rainbow Room as the charity we will donate to. The Fort Bend Rainbow Room is an organization that provides supplies and aid to abused children and adults, said Li. Clements is not alone in raising the money for the Rainbow Room. The restaurants involved in the festival donate fty percent of their prots from the festival to the event. Please come hungry, said Li, we want to raise as much money as possible. Although the money usually goes to the Rainbow Room charity, last year, the proceeds went to the Red Cross to provide relief for victims who suffered from the deadly and traumatizing Japanese earthquake. This year will be the rst year that we try to get the audience even more entertained by walking through the hallways to see booths representing different countries from all around the world. In addition To plan all the acts and coordinate all that has to be done, iClub spends about four months planning. They must hold auditions for the Clements by celebrating the ethnic diversity found within the Clements student population through this international showcase, said Li.

Photo courtesy of Joseph Bui there will be different cultural activities to participate in each booth such as getting henna tattoos, making Chinese lanterns, and practicing Japanese calligraphy, said Li. Since this event is an International Festival, many countries such as Egypt, India, China, Germany, Argentina and Japan and more are going to be represented. entertainment, get their sponsors from restaurants, and other ne details must be dealt with. iFest is always a big event at Clements. Each year around 750 students attend. This year, the iClub hopes to get an even bigger turn out. They want to maximize donations. The iClub wants to promote cultural awareness throughout To showcase their patriotism for their country, students can audition to be an act in the showcase. The iClub chooses acts based on how well the individual/group is prepared. Such as if the group is dancing in unison, wearing matching clothing attire, etc. We are looking for acts that are different and represent the country they want

to represent well. We only choose a couple of groups for one country. So even though there may be ten Bollywood groups who audition and all are good acts, we can only choose 3 groups because we dont want one country dominating the event. We want to represent as many countries as we can, said Li. Since the iClub is behind the whole operation, they want to get more and more students to join their club so they can have more helping hands. Li remembers her very rst iFest and it has made a big impact on her. She hopes it will have a big impact on others, as well. It seems like it was yesterday when I was a freshman attending my rst iFest. I was not expecting anything much except enjoying a good cup of Italian gelato, until I saw a Bollywood dance. The group was amazingly well-prepared, dancing to every beat of the song which showed their musicality. In addition, the girls lavender saris matched with the guys handsome kurtas. The groups costume attire was gorgeous, the music was catchy, and the group danced well. As of today, I blame this group for my obsession of the Indian culture. I thoroughly enjoyed iFest which was surprising because I did not expect much, and this started my involvement with iFest, said Li. Li loves and would say she is a fangirl of the event. She hopes to see bright students faces at iFest and she knows that it will be a night to remember.

Our goal has been to get as many students to the international conference as possible, said Ziyaad Khayrattee, sophomore and treasurer of Clements DECA. We took around 30 people to nationals last year, and we are hoping to bring even more this year. Clements DECA has already succeeded in increasing its percentage of people who make it to state compared to the previous year and they hope to do the same for nationals. However, students must rst prepare for the competition as much as they possibly can, for without practice, students may nd it hard to do well. For some, it can be difcult to manage school work and the project work together. The students have spent many hours on their projects, Kinsey said. Kinsey is the nominator, in charge of submitting the essays, and is the person to talk to for information about the competition and for information about entering the contest. In addition, Kinsey helps the students who are interested in entering or want to get better. I have helped proof the papers, but the students do all the work. By ZAINAB DHANANI Reporter For the past few years, CHS French students have been participating in an annual state contest called French Symposium. This competition exposes current students to the French language and culture and allows them to participate in different events. Students in Texas, ranging from those studying level one to level ve French, participate in this contest and demonstrate their French skills and capabilities. The theme for this years symposium is Le Qubec. Pamela Milton, French II-V teacher, is prepping students and getting them ready to compete with other students from all around Texas. Students and I have chosen their poetry or readings and are practicing together several times a week. We work on pronunciation, memorization, and test-taking strategies as everyone will take four written tests upon arriving at Klein Oaks High School. These tests will be grammar, culture, vocabulary and listening, Milton said. This year, Milton is taking 19

for the playoffs, Richard Grimm, baseball coach, said. In general, most coaches are willing to trade better records for more chance to advance in the playoffs, even saying that playing harder teams is better than playing against teams that they usually defeated. I think it enhances our chances of going deeper into the playoffs. The better and more challenging our schedules, although the records may not be as good, the teams should be better prepared for stiffer competition, Grimm said. Even though the transportation costs for those new 4A schools will increase when traveling to their new district games, the benets may outweigh the costs when it comes to more a more equal playing eld. CHS coaches hope the new challenges Clements will face in a smaller district will improve the teams and make them even more ready for playoffs in the coming years.
Practice, practice, practice. The team and I practiced maybe twice a week, I believe, said Le. The winners even gained something or learned something. Some of the things they learned may even effect them later in the future or even throughout their whole life. Gaining courage was one thing gained by Le. I can denitely say Im not afraid to perform in front of a crowd anymore, Le said. I got over my fear and it felt good to perform. Cano agreed, believing that auditioning for Clements Idol was a good choice. The journey was an exhilarating thrill, a welcomed experience in the midst of the barren landscape of the normal school year, Cano said. Though the talent show has come to an end for this school year, those who are interested in trying out can stay tuned for updates next year.

From Kids to Parents: staying vigilant on eating habits may prevent disorders
By AMY WAGNER Co-Editor-in-Chief Dear Parents, Did you know that as many as 10 out of every 100 young women in America suffer from some form of an eating disorder? According to the National Association of Anorexia, 90 per cent of teens or young adults who suffer from an eating disorder are women and can affect everybody, regardless of social class, gender, age (some eating disorders begin as early as age eight), or weight. So, your rst question may be, what are the different kinds of eating disorders and how can they affect my teen? The answer actually may It is an obsession, engulng their entire diet and diminishing it to, well, nothing. Those who suffer from anorexia either stop eating completely or eat very little. Their caloric intake is so small that they are not getting enough nutrients or minerals to function on a day-to-day basis. Anorexia has many different side affects because it affects almost all of the major organs. For example, those with anorexia obviously lose a drastic amount of weight in a very short amount of time, but they also suffer from kidney failure, brittle nails, yellow skin, low blood pressure, thinning hair, weak muscles, swollen joints, and if anorexia nervosa is left untreated for a long time, it will eventually lead to death. On the opposite end of the spectrum is bulimia nervosa, a disorder in which one overeats and then purges or takes laxatives. By doing this, the person is eating but is immediately getting rid of the food. This also stems from an obsession with being thin but it is just another way to go about making that happen. It is quite literally a cycle of overeating and immediately getting rid of the meal the person has just taken in. Those who suffer from bulimia often suffer from chipmunk cheeks, which occur from repeated vomiting, ulcers on the stomach or throat, swelling of the hands and feet, and broken blood vessels in the eyes. In an attempt to lose weight, those with bulimia typically do the opposite. They gain it. The nal major eating disorder is called binge eating disorder, or BED. This consists of a person overeating and doing nothing to even the cycle and lose the weight they have been gaining. BED can, and in most cases, will lead to things like obesity, diabetes, failure of certain organs, or even gallbladder disease. While it is easy for us to say we all suffer from BED at times (like, for example, Thanksgiving dinner), BED is quite serious and does actually affect many people in America. It is very important to watch these warning signs, and if they ever grow or seem more harmful than they once were, you must make sure your child gets the proper medical attention. Warning signs for anorexia nervosa include dieting even though the person is already thin, obsession with nutrition, pretending or lying about eating, preoccupation with food, and strange food rituals such as refusing to eat in front of others or in public. These signs, though they may seem very common to those who dont have anorexia, are much more severe in those with it. People with anorexia are not necessarily aware that they are mentally ill with the disease we teens typically joke about, but others are. Warning signs for bulimia include taking extreme measures to lose weight, depression, almost always going to the bathroom right after eating, taking diet pills or laxatives, and becoming more isolated. They also include signs much similar to anorexia but it is important to take note of the ones I have listed. BED is the most common to detect. It is similarly a matter of how much the person eats. If the person eats a lot more than he or she should or eat even if the person is not hungry, there may a risk of BED. BED is also detected by an increased weight. Like I said, it is fairly easy to detect. Those with BED are not afraid to eat and will stretch their stomach to its very limit. I would like to take this time, though, to stress that eating disorders are actually considered mental disorders because they affect the mind and how the mind percepts the body. Those who suffer from eating disorders should be treated by medical professionals who have experience with eating disorders and mental professionals such as a counselor or a therapist. Only one-third of people who suffer from an eating disorder fully recover. It is important to watch your child to ensure necessary actions can be taken in the event that your child is one of 8 million other people in America who suffer from an eating disorder. And remember, eating disorders can affect anyone. Just because they are more common in teenage girls does not mean you should not watch sons, too. Be vigilant, be caring, and always seek help from a doctor or therapist if needed. Eating disorders are not a joke. Watching and loving your teens are the two most important things parents can do to boost their childrens selfesteem and prevent eating disorders. Love, Amy
surprise you. Eating disorders are a matter to be taken very seriously, so it is important to watch for warning signs (Ill touch on those later). The most common eating disorder is anorexia nervosa, in which the person is obsessed with being thin.

By DEVIKA SINGH Copy Editor Voices-Co-Editor Bringing world affairs a bit closer, Model United Nations is one of the many diverse clubs at Clements which makes students aware of the world around them. Model UN is a club in which students interested in world affairs are able to afliate with one another about such topics through diplomacy. Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations, Christine Badillo, club sponsor, said. In essence, students participate in international debate in order to solve the issues currently plaguing our world. Through representing their countries, students learn unique cultural perspectives that aid them in developing a comprehensive, worldly view. In addition to this, students learn to develop the skill of debate and compromise by working with their competitors. Along with learning and debating, the members also apply their skills in their community, gaining handson experience. This year the club has participated in three conferences, Houston Area Model United Nations Conference at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Central Texas Model United Nations Conference at the University of Texas- Austin, and recently in February, the Johns Hopkins University Model United Nations Conference at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland.

In addition to conferences, they also participate in Academic World Quest, hosted by the Houston World Affairs Council, a social studies trivia competition that focuses on geography and current events. However, as is any other extracurricular activity, Model UN is time consuming and constitutes much international debate, said Farishta The preparation does not end at the conferences and the meetings, though. Finally, members are able to implement their new-found knowledge into everyday life and, eventually, in their careers that await in the future. Traits like diplomacy and communication not only show leadership, but they can be used anywhere at any time in order to interact well with others. MUN members must implement organization & efcient time management skills to improve leadership qualities by balancing both empathy and resolve and tenaciously voicing their countrys ideals, Badillo said. The students learn a lot when they get involved in MUN. They also develop oratorical prociency and integrate rational thought into a debate platform and, above all, acquire an international outlook by identifying and understanding the root causes of modern global issues, said Badillo. Members employ their learned prociency and knowledge day in and day out to be fully prepared for anything that is yet to come, but the learning does not end there. Considering that this is a club that has grown from ten members to 60 in the span of two years, coaching new members can become a cumbersome task, but a step at a time, even inexperienced members catch a hold of events once the club

But with school being so hectic, it is somewhat of a relief that conferences are spread apart. It is very hard to nd the perfect balance between schoolwork and Model UN conference preparation, Karim Farishta, junior, said. With such a challenging future ahead of her, she has to work hard to keep up with the challenging art classes and her many after school activities. To keep herself motivated, she takes a positive outlook on each thing she does, focusing on how she improved what she attempted. I keep motivated by my small tastes of victory, from whenever I nish an art project that I like or when I nail dance choreography. Whenever you are an artist, visual or performing, I think you just work towards constant improvement, and knowing when you have improved is the greatest feeling in the world. Riola has also made sure to make high school memorable by going to concerts and spending time with her friends who helped make her high school experience that much better. My friends have helped me to take myself less seriously. What is great about my friends is that I know we can always share the creative process with one anotherwhether
By FAROHA KHAN Reporter add Debate, golf, PALS. For some, the three demanding clubs would be hard to handle. But Rishi Singh, a senior at Clements, manages to balance them almost effortlessly. Seniors normally fall into two categories: ones who have no idea where they are going after high school and ones who have clear, concise ideas of their plans after their senior year. Singh falls into the latter category. I would like to go to college to major in geosciences and eventually end up in law school to become an environmental lawyer, Singh said. Singh enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee, reading books, and watching television. Whenever I get the chance, I read books from a list I have that never stops growing, Singh said. Singh nds inspiration in many places. There isnt one person who inspires me. However, being around a group of friends who work hard inspires me as well. My cousin, Rohan, also inspires me to do whatever it is I love, Singh said. Yet inspiration can also come from something said or read, a single sentence that one never forgets even through the constant ood of obstacles thrown at one. Singh has a signature quote. Everything is possible. The
impossible just takes a little longer. It was from a Dan Brown book that I read, Digital Fortress, Singh said. Singh values his friends. Not only does he nd encouragement in them, but he feels that they help him overcome obstacles that inevitably come his way. Usually, I overcome obstacles with the support of my best friend, Amanda, and by working harder than I did before, Singh said. Sophomore year can be a tough yearHowever, sophomore year can inspire people to work harder and persevere. Singh had a similar reaction. Sophomore year, for sure, was the hardest for me. I didnt live up to my potential in anything that I took on and it was a great wake up call for me to get motivated, Singh said. Singh has spent many hours engaging in extracurricular activities. Not only does he participate in them, but he also strives to stand out and exceed in them. I won a few awards for golf and debate, Singh said. Being sociable and amiable can be helpful. Singh believes that he is a gregarious person and has the previous traits. Considering that he is in PALS, he is probably right. I think I can get along well with everyone and strike up a conversation about nearly everything. Im also really good at trivia games, Singh said.
Singh, as a senior, has some advice for underclassmen. Take school seriously, but not to the point where you cant do the things you enjoy. Manage your time and youll be able to t everything into your schedule, Singh said. High school is full of regrets, but Singh does not recall any problems. I dont really regret anything. I learned a lot in high school, Singh said. Singhs goals for the future are, surprisingly, relaxed and fun. I want to read 20 books by the time school year is over, learn how to throw a Frisbee more than one way, be able to run ve miles without being tired, take a road trip, and go to grad school in the Northeast, Singh said. Getting through high school is hard, but often the decision of choosing a college or university to apply to or deciding where to go can be the hardest part of all. College is up for grabs living in a split family where half went to A&M and the other half went to U.T. I have no idea how to choose between them and then theres always the possibility of going to Oregon. However, wherever I go I will want to make the steps to become an environmental lawyer, Singh said. As Singh nishes up his senior year with a jump start on college, he still stays fun and relaxed yet focused on the futute before him.
By ABBY RUNNELS Reporter For many people, especially high school students, it may take years to nd a creative outlet that works to both inspire more creativity and channel emotions. Erin Riola, however, has more than one creative outlet and is planning to turn one of them into a career. She has tried most of the art-related activities that Clements has to offer but has found that art is her true calling. Aside from her art classes and regular course load, she is also active in clubs and other outside activities. I take AP 2D Design and Sculpture III; Im co-president of National Art Honor Society, Clements Rhythm vice president, Clements Earth advertiser, Philosophy Club historian, and Gay-Straight Alliance vice president. Im also a member of NHS and ISO Photography Club, said Riola. In fact, she enjoys art and design so much that she plans to make it her career. I plan on attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It is the school with the third-largest art museum in the world. Chicago is beautiful, and Ill get an awesome education there, Riola said. She hopes to get a job as a creative director, since almost everything has use for one. This would give her the chance to utilize her artistic abilities in making advertisements, music
it is teaching each other dances, sharing Photoshop skills, or just telling corny jokes, my friends have made these hallways brighter. With so much going on, Riola has to make sure that she balances school with her artistic activities. She does this by making sure she keeps her priorities straight and staying healthy. I balance school with extracurricular things by doing all schoolwork before doing anything extra. I also make sure to sleep (which many artists forget to do). Her parents, who are scientists, also help to keep her grounded and support her. My family impacted my high school experience by helping me learn priorities and always being there when I needed them. My parents really helped me whenever I needed anything in chemistry or physics, Riola said. It is people like Riolas parents and friends that inspire her and challenge her. She has these people to thank for her motivation and big dreams. My role models are all my friends and family who manage to bring a smile to my face every day. Through my time around them, I am challenged to create more, dream bigger and change the world. With such big dreams, Riola is determined to always improve her artistic abilities and work towards perfection.

teens is how to properly handle it. Many teens are afraid to speak up when they are being bullied because of the fear that, when the bully nds out, the punishment will be much worse. One method is to put anger aside and think about the situation rationally. If a teen feels like they may be overreacting, it is okay to laugh it off and try to ignore the comment. If a teen truly believes that they are being discriminated against or treated unfairly, it is time to take the next step. The next step is to plan a confrontation with the individual in which the teen can act appropriately and calmly. By REBECCA PLUNKETT Copy Editor Staying up late into the night to nish that last little bit of homework or to get to the next level in the latest video game is something of which nearly every single student is guilty. Many students grab only two hours of sleep some nights and others get through the whole night with none. Where this crosses the line between being worth it or not is strictly based on each individual, but people must be aware of the adverse effects of late night behavior. For whatever reasons, depriving a body of its natural revive and refresh time comes with consequences, some of them worse than others. Students might think that after staying up half the night, the only symptoms are tiredness and irritability. However, there are many more factors that play their part and many more effects that do not develop until much later on. Sleep deprivation has caused major disasters in recent history. Some of these include the 1979 nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill, the 1986 nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl, and others. Workers who were fatigued from lack of sleep or from working through the night are thought to have caused these mega accidents. Lack of sleep can also affect everyday functions, driving being a major one. Falling asleep at the wheel is common. According to the National Highway Trafc Safety Administration (NHTSA), drowsy

driving causes over 100,000 car crashes each year, resulting in about 1,550 deaths. Another noteworthy effect of not getting enough sleep is the damage to intelligence. Sleep is linked to thought processes and learning, and when one does not get enough sleep, school performance suffers. First, it impairs attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem solving. This makes it more difcult to learn efciently. Second, during the night, various sleep cycles play a role in consolidating memories in the mind. If you dont get enough sleep, you wont be able to remember what you learned and experienced during the day, according to Webmd.com. Other than daily problems, serious health risks can result from a bad nights sleep. These include heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and diabetes. Dr. James Krueger, professor of neurobiology at Washington State University, is a scientist who studies sleep disorders. He says adequate sleep appears to be a key factor in our ability to prevent and ght off illnesses. Another issue attached to sleep deprivation is the fact that some people then develop insomnia. Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which the suffer has an inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. According to sleepdex.org,, In humans, fatal familial insomnia, a degenerative brain disease, leads to death after several months, though scientists have not determined whether the cause of death is the sleep loss or other aspects of brain damage. While this disease is extremely rare, lack of sleep can have dramatic effects on quality of life. Insomnia is also a sign of depression and can be a tell tale sign that one will most likely develop it later on in life. In a 1997 study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, people who slept less than ve hours a night for seven nights felt stressed, angry, sad, and mentally exhausted. Over time, lack of sleep and sleep disorders can contribute to the symptoms of depression, Webmd said. Other than the more serious problems, lack of sleep can be bad for the skin. Most people have experienced sallow skin and puffy eyes after a few nights of missed sleep. But it turns out that chronic sleep loss can lead to lackluster skin, ne lines, and dark circles under the eyes, Webmd said. Another thing to watch out for is weight gain. The phrase you snooze, you lose seems to be completely relevant as far as sleep
goes. Hunger, and particularly cravings for high fat and carbohydrate full foods, has been connected with lack of sleep. According to liporid.com, a protein hormone is the cause. three men have a disorder, and one in ve women also have one. This does not mean if a person snores once or twice a week because they slept on their back that they may have a sleeping disorder. This means that if a person snores all hours of every night that they sleep they should get looked at by their doctor, because there is a chance that they have a sleeping disorder. Having a sleep disorder does not only affect the patient but also the people around them. This can put a great deal of stress on family members and friends, causing a lot of worry and concern. But even more problems occur when the patient has someone that they sleep in bed with. The restlessness and noises that come from many sleep disorders can cause the other person in the bed less sleep also. A person does not need to be an adult to have a sleep disorder. Many children sleep walk, and this is considered a sleep disorder. In many cases, sleep walking is not too serious. But in some uncommon instances, a child can travel outside of their house, still sleeping, and put themselves in serious danger. Children wandering the streets while still sleeping are the reasons people should get treated for these disorders. Lack of sleep can harm many people around the sufferer, and put even more harm on themselves. Sleep disorders are very serious and should always be treated.

A very rare few are able to control their dreams after realizing they are actually dreaming. False awakening dreams are very similar to lucid dreaming in that once dreamers realize they are dreaming they wake up. These are dreams that vividly show the dreamer waking up and continuing a daily routine. The dreamer watches himself brush his teeth, get dressed, and leave for school or work. These dreams are usually so realistic that it leaves the dreamer wondering if he actually woke up. These are sometimes called the double dream, or the dream within the dream. Nightmares are disturbing dreams that cause the dreamer discomfort and anxiety and may be the response to real life trauma. Nightmares are indications of fears that need to be confronted. Recurring dreams are the easiest to understand. They are dreams that occur more than once. These can be of any kind, even daydreams. Healing dreams are believed to be messages to the dreamer from the brain, alerting that something is wrong or will go wrong in the near future. Some psychologists believe that before or during asthma attacks or migraines, dreamers will dream about having to go to the doctor or dentist or some other medically related scenario.

Another type of dreaming is prophetic dreaming, in which the dreamer seems to predict the future. There is no science behind it, because scientists believe that having the ability to see into the future is impossible. Having a prophetic dream may merely be just a coincidence. Having this type of a dream suggests one is experiencing anxiety and is seeking certainty in the future. Signal dreams tell the dreamer how to solve a certain problem that is plaguing the mind. They often help the dreamer make a decision. Epic dreams are dreams that are wild, exciting, and bigger than life. Now after years of planning and

negotiating, and a brief period where Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro (Pans Labyrinth, Hellboy) was slated to direct Peter Jackson is back to direct The Hobbit, which is the rst part of a two part series. The Hobbit takes place years before the start of the Fellowship of the Ring, and tells the story of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freemen) and how he found the one ring. It will be very curious to see if Jackson is able to rekindle the magic of his previous lms. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Directed by Christopher Nolan The long awaited sequel to The Dark Knight, this movie will be a must see for all moviegoers. Due to the tragic death of Heath Ledger, the joker will not be included in this lm. However, this time around Batmans nemesis is Bane (Tom Hardy), a crazy, steroid-pumped, cult leader, who is determined to destroy Batman and Gotham. Other plot details are unknown at this point, but after making lms such as The Dark Knight, Inception, Prestige, and Memento Nolan has proved that he is the type of director that can be trusted to give innovative and unique cinematic experiences.
DJANGO UNCHAINED Directed by Quentin Tarrantino After the success of his last movie Inglorious, Tarrantino has embarked on another passion project Django Unchained. The lm tells the story of a freed slave (Jaime Foxx) who journeys across America with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to retrieve his wife (Kerry Washington) from a brutal and evil slave master (Leornardi DiCaprio). Seeing Leonardo DiCaprio play a villain and starring in a Tarrantino lm, who usually gets great work from his actors, will surely be exciting. Tarrantion tends to polarize audiences but at the very least he provides lm experience quite unlike anyone in Hollywood. THE AVENGERS Directed by Josh Wheadon The long anticipated super hero movie which has been in the works for years, The Avengers will nally pop up in cinemas this year. The movie features many superheroes that have popped up in previous marvel lms such as Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), the Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow/Natasha Romanaff (Scarlett Johansson), and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who previously appeared in Thor, and gures to be the villan of The Avengers. Plot details have been kept secret so far, but it promises to be one of the most exciting lms of the year. THE GREAT GATSBY Directed By Baz Luhrmann The great director of Moulin Rouge returns with an adaptation of the popular novel The Great Gatsby. For those who do not know the story, The Great Gatsby is focused around a mysterious rich man (Leonardo DiCaprio) who returns to New York to reclaim the love of his life Daisy (Carey Mulligan) away from her shallow husband (Joel Edgerton). The lm also stars Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway. While on the surface Luhrmann may seem like an unconventional choice to adapt this novel, he will denitely bring a unique perspective to such a popular and hallowed source material.
By ABBY RUNNELS Reporter In todays world of nonstop activity and entertainment available at any time, problems with getting to sleep have become more and more common. Lying awake very late into the night is not only bad for mental health, but it could lead to serious issues later in life. For some people, counting sheep just does not work, and they struggle to get enough sleep to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This leads to feeling lethargic and having concentration issues the next day. Sleeplessness, or insomnia, may be a result of a variety of factors, like depression, poor sleep habits, like watching TV in bed, stimulants, or lack of regular exercise. But the main reason teenagers and young adults suffer from sleeplessness is because of stress or anxiety. Trying to go to sleep with nothing to distract from that daunting test or audition the next day can be a difcult task. It is important to try and do things to combat this so that when going to bed, you feel more able to relax and drift off to sleep. The best ways to get to sleep faster and longer are to make changes to your morning and evening routines. This way, your body becomes accustomed to waking up and going
others fall asleep quickest in silence. If you like to listen to music, try making a playlist of relaxing music to listen to before sleeping. If that does not work, try listening to talk radio, which can be soothing. Establishing your preferences and making them a routine is a good way to make bedtime more relaxing. While these things are all great ways to make falling asleep easier and help you get more sleep, the best way to fall asleep is to get healthy. Eating right and exercising will help the body fall into its natural routine that includes a healthy amount of sleep. However, some forms of sleeplessness should not be taken lightly. If you have trouble sleeping for several weeks or months in a row, you may have insomnia, and seeing a doctor should be the rst action you take. Several sleep disorders stem from sleeplessness. Chronic insomnia is often a symptom of another health problem, such as depression or chronic pain. Most likely, though, sleeplessness is just a result of bad habits or stress that is happening in daily life. Changing just a few things during the day and at night could help improve sleeping habits, which leads to an all-around better and more healthy lifestyle.

Standardized testing provide fair advantage for students
The reality is that cheating happens. In the everyday school environment, students get by after not studying by writing a few equations on their hands. They copy homework from their classmates and, in some instances, even use their phone during a test to get a few more answers. As a result of this, many grade point averages are remarkably higher than they should be. Those who do not take the easy route nd themselves falling back in rank as more and more of their peers are getting ahead by unfair means. The SAT and ACT are perfect examples of a non-cheating environment. Students actually study for them and colleges get an accurate accord of what each student testing. Schools can also have a major effect on grade point average. A few schools are more difcult than others and have different opportunities to offer their students. A class can be a breeze in one school and the same class at another school could leave one struggling for an A. In this case, the SAT and ACT offers the same test to all of the students, thus giving colleges a fair account of what each individual student knows and which ones will benet from their institution. Taking students outside of their normal learning environment and putting them in a room with other students and teachers they do not know gives a stricter environment for the students who are taking the test. They are less likely to cheat because of the more severe consequences that are enforced in these testing environments. Especial ly during the TAKS, the environment is so strict that students, whose phones go off during the test, even if the phone is not on their person, no longer have their scantron sheet scored. Also, the SAT and ACT are both tests that can be taken again. Since colleges will only look at the highest score, there is not a lot at stake except the test fee. The everyday tests that are taken at school do not give the chance for a retake, so students feel as if they have more at stake on the day to day basis and will be more likely to cheat. Standardized tests are fairer to everyone and offer students a second chance if they do not do well their rst time taking the test. The standardized tests offer a fair advantage to each and every student. They can study, or simply blow it off. However, these tests are not designed for torture. They are important methods for colleges to judge how much every student knows and are probably the most crucial aspect of college admittance.

By REBECCA PLUNKETT Copy Editor The SAT, ACT, TAKS and the new STAAR are all standardized tests students in Texas are required to take. They are looked at by students with dread and animosity, for sitting in a drafty, deadly silent room for hours on end taking a test that could possibly determine their futures is not the ideal way to spend the day. However, these tests are not shaped for comfort or for fun. They are a tool for colleges to nd those who have studied and retained knowledge and exhibit the appropriate characteristics that would benet the schools. These standardized tests are necessary for many reasons. High school is the time for students to start debating what their future is going to hold. This is the crucial time that shapes everything. College may or may not be the most pivotal of all of these choices students must make in high school. There is the major question of whether they actually want to go to college or not, and after that is decided, students who want to go to college must then decide where they want to go and then take the steps to address how to actually get there. Colleges cannot simply let anyone into their institution. They must make the decisions that will benet their reputation and keep standards high. Without the standardized tests students dread so much, colleges would not really have a basis on which they can to make their decisions. The cream of the crop could go by unnoticed while the subpar student could be admitted. There are many ways that some students can make themselves appeal to colleges and show themselves as much better than they really are. Many times this is by unfair means. Without the standardized tests, cheating would be quite an effective way to breeze from high school and into college.

is really capable of, not their ability to cram as much as possible on their hand. The testing environment during an SAT is one in which no student dares to cheat. Therefore, the scores are more trustworthy and can boost those who bide by the rules. Aside from the cheaters, there is also the question of quality. Some classes are more difcult than others and credit is not always distributed evenly. Even between regular classes, there are differences in teachers that need to be considered. Some students are luckier than others and get the cool teacher, so the teacher who teaches the same subject but with an iron st can nd the students averages lower than those with the cool teacher. By taking a test that every single other student is taking, those who may have a lower average but learned more will benet from standardized

By YASMEEN YAHYA News/Parents Editor For as long as most students can remember, Clements students have been able to walk from the t-shacks to the band hall through all doors as well as any doors that enclose the school. They have not wasted time walking through crowded hallways or getting caught behind the slow walkers. They do the smart thing by avoiding all that mess, and they walk around the school. At least, they used to back in the day. The Clements staff has done their best to protect their students. Although the government sometimes makes decisions without regarding the needs of the public, they do try to protect them. Keeping students safe is one thing, but sometimes we students wonder if government decisions go too far.

By ABBY RUNNELS Reporter As election years November is approaching, candidates opinions and stances are becoming more and more relevant to our daily lives, especially as students. Though most of the issues currently being discussed might not affect us directly right now, some of them could become a part of our daily lives in the near future. One such issue is the problem of high school dropouts. In the 2012 State of the Union address on January 24th, President Obama spoke to the nation about his plans for the future of America and its residents. Many critics believe this speech was more of a platform utilized to boost his campaign instead of actually promising to do anything. However, despite what people may believe about President Obama and his real motives, he does deserve credit for addressing one of the
If President Obama could make America see how much improving the education system requires and consequently lower the dropout rate, the economy and the welfare of our country would be much beer.
There are many reasons that students drop out of high school. They could be bored or not see the relevancy of their education to the real world. But many times it is circumstances out of their control that force them to drop out. Many dropouts are teen moms who have to leave during pregnancy and then

school rating and not on the actual quality of education a student is getting, it is a losing situation for the student. Other reasons why there is a bombardment of standardized tests these days are companies like Collegeboard and state-wide education boards believe there should be a uniform way to measure knowledge. They do not take into consideration that some students do not test well and that a surprising many suffer from test taking anxiety which can greatly affect how a student does on a test. Tests like the PSAT, ACT, SAT and SAT IIs all have a huge bearing on a students future, or so they are led to believe.
Nearly every Clements junior, senior and maybe even sophomore is preparing or getting ready to actually take one of these exams sponsored by Collegeboard or the ACT Program. Students cannot pass or fail these exams, but everyone wants to do well to get that perfect score that is so difcult to attain. The reason that these tests are deemed unfair is many people say that they are not real indicators of a persons intelligence. Instead they are testing how fast a student can take the test, or unfairly enough, how they can manipulate their test taking strategy to maximize their score. These tests have a lot riding on them since college admissions boards put a lot of emphasis on certain scores. It is true that a student can take these tests as many times as they please as long as a family is capable of paying the somewhat pricey testing fee, which is also quite unfair to students in low-income families. While there are ways for low-income families to avoid the fee, there are always loopholes that may inhibit special cases from taking the test multiple times, maybe even once. The fact that colleges weigh these scores so heavily is unfair for these people and also makes taking these tests a complete inevitability, practically a requirement. The tactic many people use is taking an SAT Prep course. These prep courses can be ridiculously expensive at times and the only thing the courses really teach is how to beat the clock and the memorization of special tricks to maximize scoring potential. It is very difcult to judge a teenagers ultimate intelligence on a test that only measures certain skills during a timed test in a high pressure situation. Standardized testing of all types has proven to be inconclusive regarding true intelligence. It ignores the massive amount of students who suffer from test taking anxiety, and creates a learning environment based on incentives.

The issue of high school dropouts will probably be a signicant and debated one in the upcoming election, since many see it as not only an ethical responsibility, but as a way to help mend Americas broken economy in the future. President Obama is on the right track in regards to education reform, but he is going to need help from the American people in terms of nances if he really wants to make a difference.

Playing baseball at the high standard of the Clements baseball program and maintaining academics at Clements are both extremely difcult. To stay on top of both activities requires dedication at the highest level. You simply do not have the time to worry about hanging out with your friends every day, Brandon Chaudhry, junior, said. Dedication tags along with perseverance, and the strength to want it to the point where the athlete is willing to juggle time and activities simultaneously. So, to be persistent, players obviously need motivation from peers and family, but most importantly from their coaches, whom they work with the most. However, the need to motivate comes after the set of expectations on the priority list.

Expectations are, and have always been the groundwork for a disciplined team. Once the foundation has been laid down, the players begin to get their heads in the game because they know what is wanted of them, and if they are willing to go all the way to fulll the expectations. To many students and players, the sports in which they are involved are not simply games. The sports take up so much time and effort, not only on their part but also on their parents and peers. These extracurricular activities become

A homerun, though, is not an everyday thing. It takes practice, time, effort, determination, and will power, all of which the Clements baseball team has used to make a homerun a practice rather than a rare occurrence. One of the main factors that rise with extracurricular activities, such as sports, is that of academics and baseball together. Since such a time-consuming sport requires hours of practice, players must utilize their time wisely, sprinting towards the bases, yet also towards the load of homework.

Due to the work ethic that playing a sport requires, student-athletes often learn how to excel both on the eld and in the classroom and later in their job, Chaudhry said. As any sport does, baseball allots teens and young adults room to grow and develop. It also teaches them skills they use on the eld and can also often use at school or in their daily lives. Also, since much of the attitude needed for baseball can be used in school, it becomes easy to do. The most important thing baseball has ever taught me is how to utilize a competitive attitude. Competitiveness helps me strive to want to be the best at every aspect of life, Chaudhry said. Baseball has also taught me the leadership and teamwork skills which I will come to require in my future profession. Athletic players in college have often gone to become CEOs and other leading executives in the U.S. due to the abilities they pick up while playing sports. Learning, though, many-a time comes through challenges because after all, some of the best lessons are learned through mistakes and accidents. But one thing accidents prove is that an athlete cannot simply quit because of it and that a small hurdle should only strengthen the will to persevere. The toughest challenges Ive ever had to face while playing baseball are injuries because they keep me from playing the sport I love and take away a crucial aspect of my day-to-day life, said Chaudhry. He has learned from all the injuries he has sustained, because every
setback has an opportunity. I have learned to not let them stop me or halt my progress, said Chaudhry. Lastly, one eventful incident for the Clements baseball team will be playing on the new Skeeters Constellation Field featuring Clements and Dulles on April 21, 2012. Part of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated back to the Fort Bend Athletic Department and ticket sales will begin mid-march. As the Clements baseball athletes continue to aspire with the guidance of their coaches and peers, the team continues to rise athletically as it maintains its ongoing progress.

Pecheuxs has been pole vaulting, since grade 7. My dad pole vaulted in college and it made me want to, ever since 5th grade, when he showed me pictures of him doing it, said Pecheux. Pecheuxs favorite parts about track are the competitions. It is so much fun to go to different schools with your friends to compete, said Pecheux. In addition to the fun times, however, plenty of work and practice are also required by pole vault in order to ensure success. Pole vault practice is every day from the beginning of seventh period until 4:30, said Pecheux. The time needed in order to attain success in both his sport and his studies can be tough, but Pecheux gives his full effort and makes sure he gets everything done. Sleep has become a friend I havent seen much of because of sports and school combined. On nights we have track meets, we dont get back until around 11 or 12. Those nights are the toughest to get my homework done, said Pecheux. In addition, every sport has its own challenges that make it unique

and fun. This sports particular challenge is that it not only requires physical energy, but mental energy as well. This makes it crucial that every player take time to gure out which technique works best for him or her, as Pecheux has done over the years he has been involved. I have learned that along with it being an extremely physical sport requiring a lot of upper body strength, it is extremely mental, said Pecheux. This is rather difcult to do physically, but also really difcult to even know what to do mentally. It took me a solid two years to learn the correct technique. That was the hardest part to overcome. With all the practice and effort that Pecheux has put in, the successful results make the run worth it. Last year I made All- Region Pole Vault as a junior. The highest I have ever gone is 136, which is tied for the school record, said Pecheux. Pecheux attributes much of his success to his dad. Without his encouragement and advice, I would have given up long ago when the going got tough, said Pecheux. Along with the achievements that track has provided Pecheux, he has made great friends along the way. Even though it is an individual sport, my teammates are some of my best friends. We get along great and we always help each other with our
techniques and on what we improve. Without my teammates, none of us would be as far as we are now, said Pecheux. In addition to track, Pecheux is also involved in other activities, such as Habitat for Humanity and his church. Im the President of Habitat for Humanity, which I have been involved in for all four years of High School. Also, I am really involved in my church. Right now, I am in charge of fundraising money in order to go on a trip to Jamaica over the summer, said Pecheux. This year, aiming for the top, Pecheux has high hopes for the team. My hopes for this team are to sweep the Districts. Last year, the Clements pole vaulters got rst place in Varsity girls, JV girls, and JV boys, and third in Varsity boys. Pecheuxs advice for everyone else looking to make their high school experience more memorable is to nd what interests them and excel in it. Get involved in something you like and stick with it. Doing that makes your high school experience so much more pleasurable, said Pecheux. As Pecheux nishes off his last year of high school, he hopes to accomplish the last competitions with victory and support of his family and teammates.
Photo courtesy of LaDavia Pope By NIA WHEAT Photographer LaDavia Pope, senior, has been running track for quite some time now and has made a name for herself throughout her athletic journey at Clements. Pope went into track freshman year and has been on Varsity ever since. It was certainly not easy in the beginning but I am a very dedicated person once I get to wanting to do something, said Pope. Being a teen with a dream and a young lady with much determination, Pope hopes to succeed and continue on with track when attending college. Coming into high school as a freshman, Pope was immediately put on Varsity track along with some close friends. She is known as one of the fastest track runners at Clements and is well known at other high schools too. Well, I just do what I put my mind to doing. I have been running for a long time, and so being on Varsity as a freshman was a good thing, but I could always improve and still can, said Pope. Pope has already run in a few college track meets and was a bit anxious to do so. Its not so much nerves. Its just that those girls are bigger than me, bench more than me, and have more years of experience than I do. So,
Always do your best and have faith in what you do. -La Davia Pope
being in my position, you can see why I would be a bit anxious about it, but it all went well, said Pope. When doing any sport, athletes know that it is a very important thing to stay in shape and be able to continue doing ones best at all times, and track is denitely one of those sports. There is a lot of effort and hard work you have to put forth in order to be the best. I practice everyday, go to the gym almost daily, and eat as healthy as I can. I eat a bit of junk food here and there, but what teen doesnt, said Pope. At a young age Pope had much support with being so outgoing and very into sports, but family was, and always will be, the most important supporters out of them all. My family is my family. I mean, what can I say? They are always there to support me in everything I do and really help me through all the bad as well as the good. I am blessed to have them, said Pope. Pope has run almost everything, being involved with track for so long, but is a natural born sprinter. The coaches like the fact that Pope knows the techniques of running. They know how good of a runner Pope is and can be with further practice and determination. I dont do long distance. I like sprinting because that is just what I do best and I cant run for a long
period of time. Im really good at the 400s and the relay races though. Those are probably my strongest events and denitely the ones I do best in, said Pope. Of course competition is a big issue in sports. Pope knows this well. Whenever people do anything they want to be the best. Sometimes you cant be, and it is disappointing but failing is just the way it ends sometimes, but its never about that. You always win if you just keep moving forward and keep doing your best in whatever you are trying to do, said Pope. It is a fact that it takes time to grasp anything one wants to be good at, especially in the arts of athleticism. Pope has to train all the time and most importantly keeps up the grades. I mean, I cant run if my grades are low and it gets hard sometimes but I just have to do what I have to do, said Pope. Pope is not sure of a college yet but is looking and running in the college meets to see the track, coaches, lifestyle, and how the girls train and focus. If I had to give advice to anyone that wants to be in track, it is to always do your best and have faith in what you do, said Pope. As Pope leaves and heads for college, she takes her wisdom with her and continues to grow as a track runner.

McCorkle said. Last year, that was not the case. Then there is the game strategy that is hoped to be put into full effect by both the team and the coach. The game strategy is sometimes one of the most important things a team has that can determine the nal outcome of a game and the season. Play hard, be consistent and execute, and give ourselves a chance to win, McCorkle said. Meanwhile, the CHS team will be facing opponents from many schools. Hoping to be the top high school softball team, Clements is going to be facing schools with and without equal determination. The strengths the team lacks, another team may possess, posing a huge challenge to the CHS players. Travis will be the district favorite, with us, Kempner, Elkins, Dulles and Austin ghting for playoff spots, McCorkle said. One thing that is a part of playing high school sports, including softball, is the tradition. This can sometimes serve as a motivator to the team. It may involve a certain ritual or doing something in remembrance of an important person involved with the team in the past. Some are very important to this coach. Playoffs and traditions involving the memory of Coach Grafe, McCorkle said. Another motivation for the team is team spirit from the students and faculty of CHS. Supporting the team by encouraging them can serve as a great motivation to the team, helping the players to feel condent. It can also motivate the team to work harder. Everyone should come to games and wish the players good luck throughout the year and be involved as much as possible, McCorkle said. There are many expectations from the team this year. One is that this will be a good season and that the team will do its best. With hard work and perseverance, Clements

Track teams jump hurdles, practice, see hard work pay o at nish lines
By RABAB ZEHRA Sports Editor Track season has started and runners are practicing very hard. To be successful in track, students have to be willing to put in a lot of time and effort. Determined to win upcoming tournaments and district meets, Clements Rangers work nonstop and have practices every day. This shapes up the students and builds up more stamina. Practice is every Monday, Tuesday, JV meets are on Wednesday (no practice), Thursday, Varsity meets are on Friday (no practice), Asna Rupani, sophomore, said. Students have different reasons that they love to run. Some do it to work out and others do it because they simply love running. The things I enjoy about track are being able to push myself past my limits and meet new people. Although one of the things that I do not enjoy about track is long distance running, Henry Burgess, freshman, said. The team environment is usually very friendly and all the players bond with each other. The coaches and players are close as well. The only downside to track is that theres always so much going on that it is difcult to bond with those that arent doing the same event as you. That being said, the people who are in the same events as you often become like your brother or sister, said Michelle Miller, sophomore. Practicing is not only limited to school. Most of the track runners jog on the weekends or workout everyday to stay in shape. Personally, since I am a long distance runner I usually run 35 miles after school on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The workouts arent the same from week to week but every time you do the same workout, you always strive for a better outcome than when you did it before. I also go to the gym to strengthen my core, Rupani said. Running for the track team is a great experience for most students because they get to interact with new people and also maintain a healthy body. This year is my rst year to run in track. However, Ive been throwing discus since 7th grade. I really love running and I plan on continuing it throughout high school, Miller said. Goals range for a variety of things. For track, players may wish to run faster and get less time on the clock. My goal for this year is to shave at least 20 seconds off my 800 meter dash time and around 30 seconds off my 1 mile time, Rupani said. District meets challenge the players to reach further and expand their abilities. At district meets, students from all over the fort bend county are there, so it is very competitive. District meets are the most competitive meet of the year and its denitely a meet where you can see how much you have improved. Also you can compare yourself to other runners, to see what areas you need to improve in, Miller said. The coaches this year consist of: Jessica Oakley (long distance coach),
