time for the children to answer! RT @KnikiTea: #ukedchat Great question opener for kids is "I wonder", especially in conjunction with an intriguing image (I sometimes get children to discuss in random pairs, then ask one what the other said) #ukedchat (I sometimes get children to discuss in random pairs, then ask one what the other said) #ukedchat We have an awe and wonder question wall for children to ask thought provoking questions. We use one a week as our class thunk! #ukedchat @mrpeel #ukedchat Consider that nicked! Thanks! @kezmerrelda agreed there #ukedchat Much to be said for KWL / enquiry based approaches 'what do we want to find out?' #ukedchat A question matrix which is differentiated by the types of questions work well - or to cut up the matrix and choose for ability #ukedchat @syded06 @PeterSpencer88 I hope not #ukedchat #ukedchat question walls are great for plenaries, especially getting unreluctant less confident children to pick a question to answer #ukedchat no good, tweetdeck is so slow, I'm going back to my APP forms... @Educationchat Link for kagan structures? #ukedchat @rashush2 Actually should be "Please may can I go toilet?" #ukedchat @mrlockyer A mixture, some dont like talkin without rehearsal so I need to ask othrs the same thing before them, some are just lazy! #ukedchat Questioning techniques can be used to differentiate instruction in the moment #ukedchat @mberry we start all topics with that Q #ukedchat #ukedchat make time for pupils to think of and then ask questions. Teach what makes a good question and label praise when they ask one. Asking for an answer beginning with "Maybe"... so they're not committing themselves too much #ukedchat #ukedchat I love the lessons that end up so far from where you started, that creativity and enthusiasm for knowledge is amazing @MrTomtheTeacher #ukedchat no worries!

@rashush2 Yeah I thought so. Very logical minds! #ukedchat #ukedchat good idea is to give them the answers and get them to try to figure out what the question is! Thinking skills! @Carlsberg40 @super_sixfive @ICTmagic think, pair, share is good for that #ukedchat #ukedchat children should realise that asking is good and encouraged, not only allowed RT @craigneilsmith: #ukedchat random can be engaging But targeted questioning is crucial Coloured lolly sticks helps target question. Another simple one is the old: 'a ripe tomato' - what could the question be? #ukedchat Getting learners to question assumptions matters. Something we should be doing too. #ukedchat #ukedchat restrain from answering every question and instead throw it back in a scaffolded way . @nickotkdIV and when someone turns up the voltage in the power supply and ruins the internet you can still manage a lesson!! #ukedchat Anyone run specific maths program for potential Oxbridge/advanced candidates? In addition to TAG? Which year groups? #ukedchat #mathchat Questions can be adapted to fit individual needs for academic development #ukedchat #ukedchat great to use lolly sticks, have children who never offer to answer questions but love if their name is pulled out and have a go ! Young children ask questions constantly, this diminishes as they get older. Why? #ukedchat @davidhunter how do you overcome the students' 'fear of failure' reaction to randomly choosing? #ukedchat @super_sixfive and we should concentrate on that rather than criteria #ukedchat @Kezmerrelda #ukedchat here here! All children should be taught to question properly, it encourages learning, builds self esteem I think the biggest mistake teachers make when asking questions of children is not giving them enough time to think of an answer. #ukedchat @porkpiebaby I've done this - works well #ukedchat

@ks2teacher @mrpeel #ukedchat In moderation though... Didn't Socrotes drive people crazy with over use of this particular line of enquiry? @Carlsberg40 that's what I said, kind of... You have 2 craft the learning experience. #ukedchat @mrg_ict i prefer individual wbs and then getting ch to swap or teach a friend. i think theyre the most underrated classroom tool! #ukedchat RT @EmSnaps: best questions - those posed by children that allow your lessons to veer off on an exciting tangent! #ukedchat love these! @Educationchat isn't it depressing when you think you going to get interesting question and it turns out to be can I go to toilet #ukedchat @jamieclaytonleo #ukedchat if it means learning is enhanced then going off plan is better @Kezmerrelda Ace. Role of teacher to manage/facilitate learning #ukedchat #ukedchat I think it's important to not always answer chn's questions - but always question their answers promotes deep thinking @Educationchat teachers renowned for butting in too quickly when asking questions ! #ukedchat @EmSnaps @Kezmerrelda God also for letting the WALT reveal itself! #ukedchat @Porkpiebaby I am interested by this but don't quite understand it, perhaps you could share an example sometime #ukedchat @CarrotyCarrots #ukedchat Probably because they wear out the word "Why?" by 2.5 years old ;-) Chn also assume everything has cause/agency #ukedchat Lets as teachers stop talking for a moment! How do we use questions in our rooms ie boxes, in displays... #ukedchat best question is the one that teachers can't answer right away @ibettison1 @davidhunter Encourage... 'good mistake' if they get it wrong, then get children to explore why/how we could solve it #ukedchat #ukedchat Try asking questions with no answers, and waiting for the fun to start Best Question = 'How could you improve that question?' Makes children think about the quality of their questioning! #UKEdChat The best question is 1 that makes everyone stop and think, even the teacher, comes from any1/anywhere & starts a new discussion #ukedchat Asking "how do you know that" share the learning experience with the class #ukedchat #ukedchat Use questions from children at the start of a new topic, these then shape what we do over the next few weeks! @MarieWallace7 with lolly sticks it's any random childsome good use for lolly sticks, but when you want to assess a partic child #ukedchat #ukedchat is in full swing. #SCITT #PGCE #PGDEplacement #ukedchat visual learners need 17 seconds to process a question @Educationchat how do you know when they're just not going to answer and when they're just thinking? #ukedchat #ukedchat one of the core issues is to get the kids past the need to find a right answer - the best questions make ur head hurt @DaisyAsana Agree mini whiteboards underused, but have spent over 70 at poundshop buying these. Any solution? #ukedchat @SwayGrantham No problem! Let's catch up by DM :) #ukedchat #ukedchat I like the 'here's the answer, now what's the question' activity. Really focuses learners minds and makes them think! Opening discussions with "there are no silly questions" can create an incredible climate of confidence for students to ask stuff #ukedchat @nickotkdIV teehee i <3 ICT in our school...honest #ukedchat @ICTEvangelist but not to stick to a lesson plan just because it's there - deviate and follow their path, sometimes! #ukedchat #ukedchat as ks1 teacher good old show and tell is good for getting them to ask questions and they love it. Great for tangents too! #ukedchat One of my most used is 'what do you think?' Allow chn to use their thoughts & ideas. Direct further questions accordingly. #whatif I like to see a balance of open and closed Qs and engaging everyone from the start. Easy. Try it with fifty kids, like in my day #ukedchat #ukedchat the best questions? Ones students ask themselves. Ones all students respond to. Ones that lead learning in a formative direction. Istanbul guide mentioned Kemal Ataturk. I asked a question. Said he had no time to discuss that now. Felt as many children must. #ukedchat #ukedchat get groups to compose questions, helps with less confident pupils

@sarahh10 Yes, For the teacher as well. I taught only A level English for a long time & every session was very fluid. #ukedchat @ethinking perhaps questioning is sometimes too easy. Challenge is desirable and difficult #ukedchat #ukedchat the best questions force you to examine inner core of the issue and move forward with renewed understanding - pretty terrifying @thinkpink33 that is a loooooooooong time when you're all stood waiting - how do you stop the other chn getting bored? #ukedchat #ukedchat @Educationchat I'd agree with that. How long is the ideal time to wait though? @MarieWallace7 @Educationchat bad habit: only asking "Are you sure?" when I know chn are wrong. Shld do it when they're right too. #ukedchat @SusanElkinJourn @syded06 I think sometimes we can bombard children with questions not allowing time for thinking/questioning #ukedchat Pass the parcel plenary. @clareswhere would it make a difference if I tweeted about an Outstanding lesson? #UKEdChat I could take out the word 'just' >>>> questioning is important to assess what children already know, what they don't know #ukedchat #edchat assess what they've learnt often get them to to write on a post it Qs they think I would ask then they pick out of a hat and answer each others. #ukedchat @teacherofy5 yes but for that you make sure you know the stick that is going to be chosen! How would you like to jump through it kids Pose a question, allow thinking time, requestion if needed then bounce the q to another pupil e.g do you agree with ______? #ukedchat RT @davidhunter: #ukedchat make all learners accountable by not allowing hands up, giving time to think, then take turns to discuss.then choose randomly. ask too many pointless Qs . Question vouchers encourage thinking and better Qs @sarahh10 @educationchat I've used techniques like that but its more disruptive behaviour beginning as they're bored waiting!! #ukedchat @oldandrewuk completely agree but it takes strong subject knowledge and confidence #ukedchat Pose, pause, pounce, bounce is a nice term for it #ukedchat @porkpiebaby @sh_hanes @Educationchat it's at least two or three biscuits' worth. #ukedchat @lozalpops A metaphor, or an example in the classroom? #UKEdChat @CarrotyCarrots #ukedchat. It's sometimes hard to remember how it feels to be back in the learning seat. #ukedchat

#ukedchat give the answer, ask what the question could be. Bridge those thoughts baby! RT @syded06: RT @TeacherDevTrust: Great teacher questions: "what did you think of that lesson?" #ukedchat couldn't agree more @ePaceonline: #ukedchat You can tell whether a person is clever by their answers. You can tell whether a person is wise by their questions @Katie_Bacon check this out RT "@mattbritland: Using Facebook Groups in Schools: http://t.co/ITk3vtuI #ukedchat #edchat" Don't forget to join in #DLchat after #UKedchat tonight and share your digital leader news @SwayGrantham @oldandrewuk perhaps it is knowing the skills of good questioning and not planning good questions that is key! #ukedchat @mrlockyer Miss, is the bible fiction or non-fiction? #ukedchat RT @teacherofy5 very true, it snowballs #ukedchat @tishylishy I think you've a good group of questioners learning in early years too. Inate curiosity FTW. #ukedchat @Heatherleatt I think because it is entirely skills rather than content based, which actually makes it more difficult for pupils #ukedchat @SwayGrantham #ukedchat which testament? .@Heatherleatt "Once you ask pupils to raise hands you create 2 classrooms in your classroom" @dylanwiliam inspired change in me #ukedchat #ukedchat At then end of my course someone always asks "so no one really knows the answer do they?". I teach economics. @talktofile but you and I know that OfSTED like to see those group questioning/discussion sessions! #ukedchat @nickotkdIV agreed and a difficult conversation with a trainee teacher #ukedchat #ukedchat Best question I asked on atomic structure 'Why is everything we discussed in the last 45 mins totally wrong?' - great response.. @jackieschneider @swaygrantham agreed not enough q of pseudo science strategies in schools - braingym anyone? #ukedchat #ukedchat I think questioning is very important for teachers...I think Gove needs questioning on most of his bonkers policies #ukedchat Let's not forget the merits of debate and Venn charts easy to make in #powerpoint 2010 #ukedchat RT @deepexperience1: #ukedchat Best question I asked on atomic structure - 'Why is everything we discussed in the last 45 mins totally wrong?' - great response.. @mrlockyer #ukedchat best question I ever had, "Mr Hall, why have you got sweat patches under your arms?" RT @SheliBB: Don't forget to join in #DLchat after #UKedchat tonight and share your digital leader news Anyone use paired questioning ? MPG Buddies, can be good also for those quieter less confident learners. #ukedchat #ukedchat Best/worst question: "What's fire made of?" #ukedchat when they say I forget ask "if you hadn't forgotten what would you tell me" amazing how often they then give you an answer @jackieschneider I like the sounds of this but have not heard of it before? Tell me more? #ukedchat @craigneilsmith #ukedchat Complaining about the wrong type of learning is not helpful. "dominated by learning" of any sort is rare. #ukedchat best question ever asked "Ben Nevis Who's he?" #ukedchat Best single ? to either starter OR plenary a project-window lesson: "What's next?" #givethemcontrol #ukedchat best I was ever asked: where did the 10 go miss? When I was teaching VAT & invoicing. Not one of my strengths... I had no idea! Most depressing question: "are we near the end of the lesson yet?" #ukedchat RT @MichaelaPorter2: 'I have no particular talent, I am merely inquisitive' Einstein #ukedchat Last 5 minutes of #ukedchat. Final thoughts?
