The Sands ASEP classes are coordinated by the SMPO, with support from the school and in
partnership with the individual ASEP instructors. Each ASEP instructor sets the terms and
conditions for their own classes, therefore classes differ in term length, time, fees, age limits,
etc. It is the parents’ responsibility to note the specific details for the classes for which
your child is enrolled. Please save this document for future reference.
If you have a question about a specific class offering, please contact the instructor listed. If
you have questions pertaining to enrollment, scholarship, or the ASEP program in general,
please contact the ASEP volunteer coordinator, Jennifer Strom, at jrstrom@fuse.net, or 321-
6122.
All Term 2 classes begin on or after January 12, 2009 and end on or before May 15,
2009. Make a note of dates specific to the classes for which you register.
Classes are grouped by the Day of the Week on which they are offered.
The “Cost” amount in parentheses ( ) refers to the Scholarship Co-Payment amount to be paid
by scholarship applicants for any given class. For more info on Scholarships, please see the
Enrollment Form at the end of this packet.
NOTE: If you need to reach an instructor during a class, you may phone the contact
number listed below. The Sands office closes each day at 4:30 pm and will not be able
to relay messages to the instructors.

Some classes may fill before the deadline, so register early.
MONDAY CLASSES:
Art for all Ages (Grades K-6) Mondays 3:45-5:00 pm
Cafeteria January 12 to April 13
Do you love painting, drawing, crafting, sculpting? How about drama? We all communicate through art –find your
favorite way through this fun –never boring class taught by Lonna Kingsbury, Poet Laureate of Miami Township
and award winning visual, dramatic and literary artist.
Cost: $100 ($30) for 10 weeks + $20 materials fee (option to continue after April 13 for $10 per week)

TUESDAY CLASSES:
Little Dragons Karate (Ages 4-6) Tuesdays 3:45-4:20 pm
Gym January 20 – March 10
option to continue Mar 17 to May 12
This 35 minute class is designed for the younger child, ages 4-6 years old. The students will learn basic karate
skills through fun games. Character lessons and safety matters will be taught. Students will earn awards, special
belt system, have parties and be introduced to chanbara (foam sword fighting). Need 10 kids to start, so
encourage your friends to sign up! Students whose past or present behaviors appears to raise safety issues
for themselves, the instructor or other children will be ask to be represented by a parent or adult guardian during
classes. The instructor will notify you of such request to explain the behavior. We appreciate your cooperation.
Cost: $72 ($21.60) for 8 weeks; option to continue for 8 more weeks for add’l $72 (21.60)

Yoga (Grades 4-6) Tuesdays 3:45-4:45 pm
3-6 Celebration Room (between rooms 107 & 109) January 13 – March 17

It’s not your mother’s yoga class!!! Students will learn yoga postures and exercises, but this class is about more
than just that. We incorporate the practice of yoga with an active, playful and scientific exploration of the body,
mind and self through physical movement (postures), games, songs, art, stories, rest and visualization. Yoga
enhances focus, concentration, learning readiness, stress reduction, behavioral skills, physical health and
emotional stability in children. Instructor Linda Healey has a Masters in Sport Science and is a registered yoga
teacher with Yoga Alliance. Her certification for children comes from Yoga Ed and she is also a trained Yoga
Therapist. Students provide their own mat, which may be purchased from instructor. Yoga for Grades 1-3 is
offered on Thursday; see page 5 for info.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES:
Introduction to Dance (Preschool ages 3-4) Wednesdays 12:10-1:00 pm

This is a combination class of pre-ballet and primary tap skills (25 minutes each). See teacher bio below.

Mary Anne Schaeper has been teaching dance to all ages for twenty-six years and is returning for her fifth year
at Sands and her 17th year at North Avondale Montessori. Mrs. Schaeper is also currently teaching at the Tina
Marie School of Dance in Finneytown, Ohio, and Schiel Primary School for Arts Enrichment. She received her
BFA and MA as a dance major from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music where she later
served as adjunct faculty of Dance. She continues to teach, for her 17th year, in their preparatory Department,
where she is considered a “specialist in the training of children in dance.”
“Lend-A-Shoe Program”: Students enrolled in Ms. Schaeper’s dance classes have the opportunity to
borrow from a generous supply of children’s ballet and tap shoes for the sessions they are enrolled in, at
no extra cost. Shoes will be distributed on the first day of class depending on size availability.

Introduction to Jazz Dance (Grades 1-6) Wednesdays 3:45-4:45 pm

Students will learn basic jazz dance steps and techniques to the popular music they hear on the radio with
possibility for performance at the end of the term. Michele Wallace Bowers teaches marching band and
colorguard at Walnut Hills High School and is returning for a 7th year teaching jazz dance at Sands Montessori.
Once registered in the class, students may opt for continuous enrollment with fees collected each 8 weeks.
Cost: $72 ($21.60) for 8 weeks + $20 Jazz Shoes fee + $20 (maximum) costume fee; option for 8 more
weeks for add’l $72 ($21.60) payable mid-term

French I & II (Grades K-6) Wednesdays 3:45 -5:15 pm
Cafeteria Annex January 14 – May 6
Would you like to learn another language? You and your child can become bilingual – parents are welcome at
this class. Let me introduce you to basic conversation, colors, numbers, culture and manners. You will realize
how easy it is to break the language barrier. We will end the term with French cuisine. New students are
welcome for Level I. I am happy to pursue French Level 2 with last year's students. The advanced Level for
reading (work on the pronunciation) will be offered. Level 1 students should order “Usborne French Flash cards”
and “Every Day Words Sticker Books”. Level 2 students should order “Usborne Picture Dictionary book”. You can
order and pay on the first day of class through the instructor. Ms. Sylla will be using tapes, a video, and
photocopies to complete the materials you have.

Advanced Guitar Group Class (Grades K-6) Thursdays 3:45-4:45 pm
ASEP Music Room January 15 – May 7
Guitar lessons will cover care of the instrument, understanding music and reading music, becoming aware of
different world music styles and genres.

FRIDAY CLASSES:
Circus Camp (Grades 1-6) Fridays 3:45-5:30pm

Learn to walk on stilts, walk on the rolling globe, balance, be a circus clown and more! Class will conclude with a
performance on Friday, April 24 at 6:00 PM. (We will take a collection and have pizza at 5:00.)Taught by Mr.
Steve Roenker, director of My Nose Turns Red Theatre Company with 28 years experience teaching theater and
circus to children and adults. For safety reasons, this class cannot accommodate Kindergarten or younger.
Cost: $140 ($42) per child; $100 ($30) for siblings for 12 weeks

Lessons During the School Day:
Private Piano Lessons (Grades K-6) Day and Time TBA
ASEP Music Room Term January 12 to May 15
Students will learn to play piano, to read music and practice performance in individual, private 30 minute lessons.
Each month students will build upon what they have learned the previous months. All levels are welcome.
Opportunity for performance at the end of term. After enrollment, you will be contacted by instructor to arrange a
lesson time during your child’s lunch/recess.
Cost: $280 ($84) for 17 lessons; option to pay in two $140 payments; 2nd payment due mid-term

Private Guitar or Drum Lessons (Grades K-6) Day and Time TBA
ASEP Music Room Term January 12 to May 15
Individual, private 30 minute lessons in either guitar or drums. Guitar lessons will cover care of the instrument,
understanding music and reading music, becoming aware of different world music styles and genres. For drum
lessons, we will be working on: complex rhythm structures, note counting, drum care and adjusting to the full
drum set. After enrollment, you will be contacted by instructor to arrange a lesson time during your child’s
lunch/recess.
Cost: $280 ($84) for 17 lessons; option to pay in two $140 payments; 2nd payment due mid-term
